Hope everyone is doing well. The weather here in southwest Virginia is perfect in these mid-October days. I'm trying to get out and enjoy it at every moment possible. There's something that helps you feel grounded when you're amongst the leaves that are changing. And if it wasn't about to rain now, I'd be out there now instead of filling you all in on what's going on here! Ha, but it is what it is. I'm also doing a lot of traveling on my own now which is a needed part of my life. So, to catch everyone up....you might have noticed that we don't have many shows lined up from here to the end of the year. There will be some shows here and there popping up on the page, mostly regional though. The reason is that we're working our asses off on building a bunch of new songs. As of this week, we have 5 that we're finishing up and another few in the wings waiting to see the light of day and receive their due attention. At this point we are not exactly sure what we will do with these songs and if and how they will be made available to you good folks. Seeing as we don't have a label, we have to be pretty mindful of the money we put forth and direct it as best as we can. But for the time being, the focus is on these songs and where they are taking us. We are also working on another huge project for us that we'll keep the lid on right now until the time is right. Let's just say I'm extremely excited about it and it's overwhelmingly enjoyable. So you can see that we're piled up with enough work, creatively speaking, that we just don't have enough hours in the day. But that's a good thing for a season. We'll be in touch soon and get you updated with what's up. Take care

Hey y'all,
Summer is creepin' up on us. Roanoke was gorgeous today. We got together in the parking lot of an old auto parts store and grilled hobo hotplates and drank beers and caught up with our friends. Tomorrow we're gonna shoot off some guns with Marcus' parents out on the mountain.
Cam and Aaron are out of town this weekend with their other bands, The Bastards of Fate and Someone Just Like You. Greg's fixin to be a daddy any day now.
Next weekend we'll be in Kentucky for the first time. Our friend Jimmy was kind enough to help us out with shows in Louisville, Lexington, and Covington, KY. Venues, dates, and times are on the MySpace page (myspace.com/redclayriver).
On Thursday the 11th we're playing here in Roanoke with a couple of bands we're crazy about - Vandaveer from Washington, DC, plus Jonathan Vassar & The Speckled Bird from Richmond, VA. It's gonna be at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. Come by and have a beer with us if you can.
Our friend Tad at Roanoke.com posted a podcast today with a new song, an old song, and a quick talk with Marcus. Give it a listen at http://blogs.roanoke.com/rtblogs/cutnscratch/2009/06/06/podcast-roanoke-based-roots-band-red-clay-river/
We've got a two week tour coming up in July all the way out to the midwest US, so keep an eye open for some dates on our page, and hopefully we'll get to see everybody real soon.
Cheers, Red Clay River

Hey again, It's beautiful here in Southwest Virginia. We haven't updated in a while and wanted to let everyone know what we've been up to. First off, we've got some shows coming up this month in the northeast with our friend Annie Palmer (myspace.com/anniepalmermusic). We'll be playing Richmond, NYC (twice), Boston, Philly, and Harrisonburg, VA. Dates and venues are on the MySpace page. We've been writing a lot of new songs here lately, and in May we'll be recording a few of them with another good friend, John Thompson. We're not real sure how they'll get put out just yet, but we'll keep you posted. And the blog Can You See the Sunset reviewed our last EP and had very nice things to say. You can read the review here: Can You See the Sunset. Finally, the EP is now available for download at CD Baby . We hope everyone is well and that we'll get to see you on the road real soon. RCR

Well, we made halfway through the winter here...as much as the winter is here anymore. Cold, not much snow with maybe a little ice here and there. Our hibernation has gone different than planned but we're making the most of it. Can't wait to get traveling in the spring!
We've been working on a lot of new tunes that we are thoroughly excited about. A few of them are quite different from anything else that we've done previously, which is good to keep us from feeling stagnant. We might get around to recording some of the new stuff and having it available as a demo sometime in the spring, we're not sure though. This weekend (January 17th) will be extremely exciting to have our friends from Roanoke, back from Brooklyn NY, with us to play a show in Roanoke while they are recording. Check them out myspace.com/rescuebirds .
Also, Dan will be doing a few solo dates up north with our friend Billy from The Wading Girl. Check the tour dates periodically as more could be added. Finally, we're working on tours for spring and summer. More info on those to be coming soon. Thanks to everyone for your wonderful support and kindness. My heart goes out to you in gratitude!

Night before last I was walking on Yellow Mountain on Chestnut Ridge which follows the sun round to the end of the day. I was searching for the trail that led up. As dusk crawled through the trees, I met Old Tom Lanscombe and Big Joe McDonnell coming towards me heading west. These men were not men anymore, but ghosts from generations before. But don't get me wrong, they were not the "sheet-over-the-head" ghosts, but revenants deciding to show themselves. After introductions the suggestion was made for a fire by Big Joe and so we set about to building it as the air was gaining a chill. As the fire started to crackle and spit, we passed around the jugs we carried. The whiskey was good enough to make a bulldog hug a bear. It coated my throat with fire and dreams. Joe said his "hellbroth" was filled with redemption and willow bark. Our night was filled with revelry and dancing. After that we told stories of the broken past that we all have. Their faces were limestone grey but their hands were the color of creosote. I stared at them and breathed smoke of the campfire and whiskey. I felt no sleep as we still passed the jugs. The sky began to blink and fill over slowly like concrete sinking into the crevices. Rain started to fall lightly but deliberately at first. The thunder cracked like God's laughter in a cave. We decided to move on in our own directions. With a slap on the back and a drunken prayer, we said goodbye. And the rain fell harder on us, the dogs of the mountains. And now I believe in them. --dan
