So... Hi! How you? Fine thanks and you? Fine thanks.

I'm sitting at Audio Militia Studios next to my boy Tripwire while our Shane, aka "The Showered One", aka "Shooter Shane", aka "Slinky Toes", aka "Fifty Shot Johnny", aka "Mom's Sarmies", aka "Fuck Face", lays down bass tracks for one of the tracks - The Flaw - on our new album "The Name That Shall Not Be Mentioned", which is actually not the name at all... I'm just not sure what our manager (who is actually Shane) said about letting the name out... I'm so confused. All I can say is that the album has an amazing title, but more importantly, amazing songs! And the one I wanna talk about now is The Flaw. Because we've decided to record it again in a dropped B tuning. We're scared. It's so low down and bass fat that we're afraid people might actually die... No really, this song used to be total madness, now a step and a half lower, it's madder than Jeffrey Dahmer and Courtney Love's schizophrenic hermaphrodite bastard child! I can't flippin' wait to drop it live, but only if you guys promise to be Jeffrey Dahmer and Courtney Love's schizophrenic hermaphrodite bastard children on the g-damn dancefloor...! I'm talking disgusting pits here guys. Seriously.
But anyway, over the weekend we spent some time re-recording guitars for all the songs we currently have for the new album. Initially we had recorded guitars using verious equipment, including a SansAmp, various Marshall amps and Eleven, but this time round we tried some other guitars, including a PRS SC 245 and a Yamaha Baritone, along with our own guitars. We also tried a Randall amp and A Mesa for something different, something else, y'know! More is definitely more in the world of Pestroy...
Basically, what I'm tryna say is that shit is fat yo. And better. And tighter. And heavier! WOOP!
We'll be releasing soon, we'll keep you crazy cats posted, pinky swear!
In other Pestroy news... We're now on Twitter, because the whole world said we must be. Follow us to get more regular updates on what's in happeing in Pestroyville.
We also did a new photoshoot with Nic Van Reenen and acclaimed local photgrapher Mike Lewis. We're super stoked with the outcome, and had a really cool time working with these two guys, the whole thing was super chilled and they were awesome to work with, thanks guys! Expect suits, cereal, scissors, skeletons, and sluts! 'Cos Jim was there... POW! KABLAMMO!
Ok, I'm tired and I want Gahzel. Lata!

So here it is. Studio blog part 3. Holy crap, I know you guys have been waiting with baited breath for another Pestroy studio blog, so here we go. Sleepless nights over! Right? Right.
So our Shane actually managed to get himself off the Koppi and after a few days recovery has got himself and his bass into studio to take this little record of ours one step closer to completion. Of course before we talk about the recording, we have to wonder about the insane scratches on the man's legs...? Looks like Freddy Kruger was at Oppkoppi. He claims he walked into a bush, which is feasible considering that by many accounts he was one of the drunkest men on the Koppi on saturday, but we know the truth... Lets just say that our good friend and Shane's tent-mate Gordon Laws aka Heavy G sometimes can take BROMANCE to quite a rough place... For a definition of BROMANCE, visit this link:

http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php/group.php?gid=6441034458&refurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.new.facebook.com%2Fs.php%3Fref%3Dsearch%26init%3Dq%26q%3DSAMLA

Good. Now onto more important things. Like the jazzy phat nastiness that our Tripwire has got for our Shane's bass tone. When I arrived the two most handsome men in metal were doing a comparison between Shane's Warrick Corvette SS and Audio Militia Studio's Fender Jazz Bass. They've been running the two basses through Shane's Genz Benz GBE 600 Amp and a few other complex looking  machines that look like they could power a small nuclear missile silo! Tripwire's getting excited about scrolling options in Pro Tools, I'm not even sure what that means, but as long as the man is happy, I am!
We're playing the intro to The Flaw over and over to check out the different options we have. Sliding, accenting, rocking faces, splitting skulls, melting panties. You know, a normal day in the life of the Shane...!
Look, what the man has just laid down has just given me quite an extreme broner! So on that note, I'm gonna get the hell out of cyberspace, and I'll catch you guys in the real world somewhere this weekend.  Let me know where you'll be, we'll have a shooter and who knows, maybe a kiss or something...!?

Peace,
Gump.

So it's like day 4723 or something in studio and we're still tracking drums... I think we may have thrown down a bit of a gauntlet for our Dyl with the song we're currently doing, it's called The Flaw. But as usual, the man has risen to the challenge and is throwing down some double bass kick sickness that is actually breaking the spacetime continuum. I'm serious, the last roll he did actually split like 6 atoms, we had to reset the computers and everything...
Nem, the ruggedly bearded and manly East European drummer from our favourite electro opera pop-porn quintet, white metal's favourite sons, Facing The Gallows, is here. He's throwing out some suggestions and although the man is seriously into funky house music, he's got some killer ideas, THANKS NEM!
We (being myself - Gump - and Tripwire) actually went to watch Nem's band play at Cool Runnings last night, it was super sexy! Bryan sang like a heavenly angel, Chase shredded like Death in a wheat field at harvest season, Nem broke skulls and Ricki's ass stayed together! HOORAY! Oh ya, and Ray was there as well, doing something I guess...! Jokes Ray, you RULE! And your bass is awesome.
Staab from The Dead Will Tell was there as well, I think he might have drunk all the beer!
So ya, Dyl has just finished, gotta listen back, so I'm out! Catch you guys soon, hope your week is brilliant!

Peace,
Gump.

What's even happening kids!? So, Shane and Jim are at Oppikoppi, we're super bummed about missing the party, but will definitely enjoy our warm beds over a cold, thorny tent tonight! So, the rest of us, being myself (Gump), our Dyl and our Tripwire are here in the Audio Militia studios tracking some drums for our upcoming fourth album. If you've been at any of our shows over the last couple of months, you might have heard us throw down one of the new songs, Divided By Zero. Dyl's actually laying the drums down for that as I type this, shit is sounding PHAT! We've spent about a week doing some pre-production, gone through about 3 kick-drums, 5 or 6 snares, missioned over microphone angles and placement and I reckon the man Tripwire has got a KILLER tone going, the kick drum sound is literally making a sex wee all over my face right now! So hopefully by the end of the weekend we should have final drum takes down for Divided By Zero, and the two new ones that none of you have heard yet, we're calling them Suitable Failure and The Flaw. So a small update from the world of Pestroy, we're mad stoked to be writing new stuff, and I reckon you guys are gonna seriously get off on this new shit, I reckon the hard work we've put in this year has definitely paid off! I just can't wait to tear up a stage with these new tracks soon, I'm expecting some sick moshes, maybe even a little slam dancing... Ok, maybe not slam dancing...! In other news, we're gonna be at the Cool Runnings in Fourways tonight to see the fags from Facing The Gallows split faces and get the skinny jean massive slamming like a tiger eating a crocodile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7dazPp20d8)! Not to mention the boys from Inishi8 rip our sternums apart with their monster D'NB phatness! And of course to make sure Ricky from Facing The Gallows's ass doesn't split open right there on the stage, GROSS! Dude, what the fuck is going on there? It's those skinny jeans man, I'm telling you!
All right, I'm out, I'm way too high to be blogging, so I'm out! Catch you lata guys!
Peace,
Gump.

Take the head of a goat, and a bunch of alcohol poisoned, dehydrated,
sunburnt metal heads, and what do you get? Ramfest of course, the uber
metal fest situated in surprisingly scenic Rawsonville, for those of you
who don’t know, thats only a stones throw from Worcester, if you still
have no idea, it’s about an hour out of Cape Town.

Being the "Metal Bringers" that we are, Pestroy was set to rip up the Main
stage, at the twilight hour of, ...5 in the afternoon...! This kinda sucked
because it was hotter than Satan’s armpit, and shade was a five letter
word unfirmiliar to most in these parts, but due to some form of divine
intervention, Dawie, the organiser, asked if we wanted to play a better
time slot, 1am, way more up our alley, we gladly accepted!

1am seemed so far away, but we managed to keep our distance from the bar
until it was time to play, unfortunately, things were running a tad late, so
we had to prolong our unfamiliar sobriety a bit longer. Unfortunately,
the sun and copious amounts of alcohol had gotten the better of many
festival goers, so unfortunately the main stage was not so main anymore.
Everything seemed to be rocking at the second stage, which was in a tent,
with a PA system that rattled many a testicle! The organiser once again
came to our rescue and asked if we would rather play the second stage and again we accepted.

As usual, we hit the stage with the ferocity of a starved lion stumbling
across a 1 legged impala, the crowd seemed a tad nervous at the
onslaught, but after the first track or two they threw caution to the wind
and began to mosh up a storm and windmill like I’ve never seen windmilling
before. We even tested the ground with our newest track, "Divided by
Zero" which went down superbly well with these metal junkies! Thanks to Dawie who saved our asses as far as time slots go, it really was well worth the wait, and I’m sure the metal fans in the area would most likely agree. We can’t wait for next year!

Ramfest was literally the best show we have played in the Cape province,
and Pestroy are super stoked to have played to a whack of new fans. To all of you who might be in the area more or less around Ramfest time, you should seriously check it out as we’re sure it’ll only get bigger and bigger!

The "Collapse The Enemy" 2006 summer national tour with PESTROY, 16 Stitch and DJ Redwood had a lot of 'B's'... Bouncers, breakdowns, blackouts, beer, burgers, bannings, backpackers, beaches and bungee...
Taking the name from 16 Stitch's "Collapse Of Air" and PESTROY's "Enemy Within" album titles, we kicked the tour off at Zeplins in Pretoria on Friday the 1st of December.
The show went down well, nice turnout and great crowd, stage monitors were a bit lacking, but I think it was the madness at the bar that scarily set the tone for what was about to become an epic journey of men with one objective: To rock the fuck out of this country!
The Roxy's show the next night just added fuel to that already almost out of control fire.
The night before we actually hit the road, we played a benefit show at Bohemians in JHB with our friends Wickhead, Underbelly, Knave and Hikatori. All the proceeds went to an extremely deserving and close friend instrumental in making the local scene what it is, and we are so grateful so many amazing fans pulled through to help us give something back to a man who has helped our bands beyond the call of duty in such a difficult time for him. Endless thanks man, you know who you are, we love you!
Friday night in Pietermaritzburg I'm sure was good, but as I was not there I can't report! I missed the shows in Pietermaritzburg and Durban as I had to attend my sister's wedding, but the hugely talented and massively endowed Paul and Warren, guitarists from 16 Stitch, held down the fort and I've heard the shows were fucking killer, thanks so much guys!
The rainy Wavehouse show in Umhlanga ended with both bands being removed from BURN niteclub because of the rowdiness that can only come from a 14-inch rubber dildo being fed to any willing girl at the bar. Unfortunately things took a turn for the worse when Warren 16 (all 45kg's of him) threatened the bouncers of Burn with physical violence... Hence "The Bouncer Hunter" was born, PESTROY were banned from Burn and 16 Stitch lost their dildo, which took one of the essential entertainment elements away from their tour experience...
Sunday night at the Durban backpackers we relaxed at the braai on one of our few off days, but The Bouncer Hunter caused some trouble when his meat turned out to be rotten and he took it out on an innocent juggling magician, and if I was in charge of the meat department at Florida Road Spar in Durban, I'd watch my back...
Monday morning we headed through the Transkei to East London to play at The Deck in Gonubie. Comfort did not happen for PESTROY in the back of our Shane's Golf 4, and we reluctantly declined the massages 16 Stitch were eagerly offering. The Deck show saw the first of many blackouts, with the power tripping as The Stitches launched into their first track. Our manly sound engineer Fourie and his slave Werner saved the day and in no-time The 16 Salami Sticks were LOUDLY rocking the fuck out the Gonubie youth massive. The small crowd responded really well to both bands and the insane party that followed saw model/actor Andrew Facial Hair, critically acclaimed singer of 16 Stitch, violently giving orders for everyone in the bands to have fun or he would kill them! Our Tripwire and Eric G (macho gypsy manager of PESTROY) happily responded by trashing the Salami's hotel room! We saw the sunrise, sent the local pastor's daughter home, and headed to the beach for a kayak battle. The Bouncer Hunter won obviously, but in the end we all lost the sunburn battle, and guitar straps only made the pain worse on the gigs that followed!
The Station at Port Alfred was an outdoors gig, it was awesome to see some of our local fans there on holiday, big thanks to Nick The Chef for the endless supply of drinks! The gig was also attended by Tripwire's parents, their first PESTROY gig, thanks to them for coming, and for letting us swim/wash in their amazing pool!
Next up was The Cotton Club in Port Elizabeth, and after another luxuriously comfy drive, we were stoked to see such a great venue. Some technical difficulty with the wires of the adapter for my effects pedal fraying, but Eric G stepped up to the hero plate and, risking his hearing forever, sat next to my amp for the entire show changing between clean and distortion tones, ultimately saving the day! Champ!
A Jump-Dancing battle began in the car park between Christopher Robbie The Teddy Norwood (sound engineer and full time sex-slave of the Stitches) and Gump, but it was clear Teddy was an amatuer and no match for Gump's obvious experience. Gump remains undefeated!
I guess there was nothing else to do but hit P.E's version of a strip club, so we dragged the cute blonde gig promotor and headed off to The Golden Curtain. We arrived and to the dismay of the local middle aged perverts got the only two (clueless) strippers in the place to dance for us, and although it ended up being more of a comedy act than anything, it was still an unforgettable experience. In fact, I'm still trying to forget, but I can't. I might need therapy...
The next morning we hit the beach and our Dylbo, one nippled drummer extraordinaire, entertained us by doing his very own drowning porpoise impression on some rented surfboards. Things got serious when his dreadlocks got a bit too waterlogged and he looked like he was going down, but Werner came to the rescue and Dyl managed to get back on the surfboard and splutter to safety!
We returned to East London and hit Buccaneers, all I remember was rain and a painful hangover! Thanks to the Buccaneers guys for some great food, massive cheese burgers!
The next morning we were entertained by Teddy with an amazing balancing show, that's our Teddy!
Kei Mouth and The Bush Pig Bar, owned by a real pirate, was next up, and we spent the afternoon handing out flyers from the back of our rented bakkie (oh yes, our van brokedown!) to the handful of Kei Mouth locals who looked old enough to get in. We played on a truck in a massive tent to about 5 dancing kids and about 20 sitting kids, ate some more burgers (REALLY good!) and partied with JHB friends Kat and Jez, good times! The Bouncer Hunter kissed a kudu, rode on Tripwire's shoulders for half the night, and the toilets had no doors... We had a great time in Kei Mouth and although we seemed to play there a week early, we're really looking forward to returning to The Bush Pig.
Another uncomfortable trek to Stones in Knysna, but it was definitely worth it with one of the loudest gigs and one of the craziest crowd's I've ever seen! HUGE props to the guys hanging from the ceiling, pure entropy as the crowd fell all over our monitors, the response was awesome and both bands are really thankful for a great mosh from some killer Knysna people! The party went on into the morning, with our Jim throwing a tree off a big cliff on the Knysna Heads... Yes ladies, you read right, he single-handedly threw a TREE off a cliff...
The next morning we shared a "Wake 'n Bake" and, hangovers in tow, went to throw OURSELVES off a cliff, more accurately Bloukrans River Bridge, the world's highest commercial bungee jump! It's scary, when faced with your oncoming death, how silent things become... No one chickened out, probably because we wouldn't have been able to live it down if we had, and everyone said it was the best thing ever, HIGH 5!, but we have all since admitted how fuckin' scared we actually were and how horrible it was! Best Jump award is a tie between Gareth 16 for a hilariously executed "Backpeddlar" and to Nic 16 "The Greek Peasant" for a "Sideways Dead Swan". I have to admit I have never been more terriefied in my life, laugh all you want!
Stones in George was plagued with technical difficulties, blackouts, power surges and electronic buzz, props to our super-hot engineers Fourie, Chris and Werner for saving the show!
We then headed to Cape Town to our accomodation in Greenpoint, The Seagull Holiday Flats, rooms to rent for the hour... We stayed for three days.
That night, in Simon's Town at Embargo, we were re-united with our ol' drinking buddies, the one and only, the filthy, the incomparable, Hog Hoggidy Hog. I have no recollection of the next two days, I'm pretty sure we ended up at a gay strip bar knowing Ross Da Bone, Sean Snout and George Bacon, but thanks to the lovely Bianca for helping out with merch!
Second last show, Corner Bar in Cape Town, was by far for me personally 16 Stitch's best show, Andrew got the crowd amped with some help from the comedian mc who's name I forget, sorry guy if you're reading this!
On Saturday the 23rd of December 2006, we reached the end of the road, the end of tour, the end of the awesomeness, at Mercury Live in Cape Town. I was pretty damn near to tears, and shit got worse when I discovered Papa Luke's, the Mexican restaurant next to the Mercury, had closed down. So after hitting a dodgy KFC in a dodgy part of town in the middle of a riot/street party, we hit the stage. We went fuckin' nuts on stage, the Cape crowd were kinda laid back, but all in all a healthy end to 14 shows in three weeks! Our manly and ridiculously hot and talented bassist "Shooter" Shane Man Forbes (yes, Man is his middle name) managed to break his bass on my arm during the ruckus. Luckily this happened in the last bar of the last song on the last gig... My arm is fine thank you ladies...!
Redwood finished it all off with another killer set, the man is a genius, turntable master, technical wizard!!!
The birds tweeting at 5am the next morning were a fitting end to the epic journey we had miraculously survived! The mission was accomplished, and despite the many broken hearts, blown head-gaskets, destroyed back-packers, angry door-men, dirty bars, tearful strippers and regretful niteclub owners, we have to say a massive THANKS to everyone we met on the way, everyone involved in the tour, especially (in no specific order), Authentic Ideas, Sheer Music, Eric G, Chris, Werner, Fourie, Hog Hoggidy Hog, all the organisers, BURN for having such a great sense of humour, Germany for giving us Nel, Jagermeister, Cows for giving us beef burgers, 16 Stitch for all the spooning, and everyone who watched the shows and supported us throughout the country by buying merch and being fucking awesome, THANK YOU!

Cheers!

Current mood:  energetic

What's up! We have not posted in a LONG time, no excuse other than being incredibly busy! It has been an awesome 8 months, we have worked fucking hard on this album, finally the recording process is drawing to a close... It sure has taken a long time, it has been hard having only our nights and weekends to work on it, but it has definitely been worth it, this album is sounding fucking amazing! Well since we posted last, we have had Inge from LARK lay down vocals on a song called "untapped", the ballad of the album, she did an awesome job. We had Etienne from UNDERBELLY come in and lay vocals and screams down on "party monster", that shit is sounding heavy as fuck! We played "party monster" at Oppikoppi this year for the first time, we're looking forward to adding all the new tracks to our set! Nic from 16STITCH came in on the weekend and layed down some melodic harmony's over "flavour flesh", and then screamed his face off on another track. Which is weird 'cos he's a drummer, but the little bitch did a fucking awesome job, thanks greek man!
Other than that, we've all been around helping Tripwire lay his vocals down, Shane has been fattening up some of his monster bass riffs, I've been screaming like a fucking rottweiler on heat, and basically we're almost done. Some tweaking, final mixing and mastering and "ENEMY WITHIN", Pestroy's 3rd full length album will be ready! So get your asses ready for the launch soon, that shit is gonna be fucking INSANE!

Stay metal!

Peace,

Hello everybody! Apologies for not doing a diary for a while, but there's only so many times you can write (or read...) the words: "So HUNGOVER..."
The sessions have been going extremely well, we have tracked drums, bass and distortion guitars for 7 songs, we also got our friends Ross and Lee in from Hog Hoggidy Hog to do some trumpet and trombone pieces on a couple of interludes, it was good to have them up from Cape Town, there is no end to the ruckus when Pestroy and the Hog's get together!
The guitars were a lot of fun to do, we tried quite a few options and managed to get a great tone, the songs are sounding heavier than I could ever have imagined! Thanks to Anton from the Music Connection for pulling out a few tricks that he's had hidden up his sleeve, Bon Bon as usual for his help, we really appreciate it. We layered quite a few tracks for the distortion through a couple of amps and guitars, tried some direct takes, and the result is some metal!
Tripwire has been mixing and cleaning up mine and Jim's mess, and he's done a killer job as usual!
So other than that, nothing much to report from the land of Pestroy, we have been hard at work and partying hard to, and are steadily getting this album done! We will be tracking clean guitars on Sunday and then start with Round Two of drum tracks, and the process goes again!
There are some killer shows coming up as well, next thursday nite at the Roxy with MyEpic, looking forward to that, so we will see you all there, the Jagermeister will be flowing strong, so catch us at the bar for a shot! You're paying...!

13 Feb 2006

Monday Evening

Jim here, back from my mountain experience of being a hippy and whatever else you might have read during my absence… To make it clear I was climbing some serious man mountains, jumping off water falls, that kind of shit! (OK, it sounds very hippy, but fuck it, I loved it!)

Otherwise the recording is sounding awesome, Dyl is really nailing these drum tracks!

I apologize to Dyl and Shane for the loss of a leg and an eye during my mountain madness weekend!!!

Anyway, I'm back and we're all accounted for, so let the metal continue to roll…

Keep it gangsta,

Jim

18 Feb 2006

Saturday

AM:

It happens all the time, my phone rings way too early and when I answer, the usual shit:

"Dyl, we need the keys for the band room by 10am!" I'm like, "SHIT, I was only planning to get out of bed at 12!" After a 'speed shower', I hit the road to Carfax, to find Shane and Jim waiting outside staring at their watches…

After the usual amp carrying work out, we eventually make it to the studio. Tripwire and Hair seem a tad more confused than usual, a lot of "it didn't sound like this last night…!"

I'm confused.

Shane's bass eventually sounds fat, turns out he had to turn the volume on his guitar up…

This paragraph has taken me way too long to type!

Sweet, Captain Dylan Hunt of the Starship Andromeda out!

PM:

I've been sleeping on the couch all morning, apparently I was more hung over than I thought I was, in fact I feel like Satan himself has wiped his ass with my soul… dark are the days… The return of whiskey bum is imminent…

We hit the FHM Homegrown Ho's Party last night, there were a lot of Jocks there, pink shirts and gelled hair is cute! It's the shoes I just can't understand… and jocks always seem to be confused about flesh tunnels: "Boet, what are those things in your ears, are you stupid boet…?" The girls were great though, they all seemed reallt keen on world peace and shit! Nice.

OK, enough bullshit, this is a "Studio Diary "…

Yesterday, I bought a new amp, the new Ibanez Thermion, which at the store sounded fat like Gilbert Grape's Mom, but in the studio sounded dead like Gilbert Grape's Mom… confusing.

Anton from Music Connection is coming in at 2pm to check it out.

On a positive note, the amp's distortion plus pedal distortion sounds amazing, if played on the "Secret Weapon", my Epiphone Gothic Explorer, which for some inexplicable reason has killer tone.

Shane's been laying bass takes, kicking ass all over the place, The engineer men have been messing with Hartke pre-amps and Shane's Hughes and Kettner, the tone is low down groove monster shit!

We ran out of steam into the afternoon, Shane finished up a take for "Flavour Flesh" and we all went home to sleep!

Peace,

Gump

Sunday 19 Feb 2006

AM:

I forgot that Anton came in yesterday and made the amp sound killer, much respect!

We got in early and listened to Shane's "Flavour Flesh" take from yesterday, it was tight and grooving, so we dropped him in at the bridge for a quick re-take on one part, nailed it, moving on, loving the song, it's all about fucking which makes me happy!

Shane's in the booth right now practicing for the monster, the hecticness that is "Cortisone"! Bon's just arrived, Shane's laying down a take, this song is all about attack, probably the most complex and intricate song on the album, but definitely the heaviest and most brutal, it's the most metal song we have! Sorry if I'm rambling, I fuckin' love this track!

Trip reckons the section Shane just did is a bit shady, Shane thinks Tripwire is a bit shady, they're wrestling, limbs have been torn off, there was some make up sex, and we're back to recording!

The song is sounding awesome, in fact this whole fuckin' album is sounding great, I'm really proud of what's been done so far.

We're breaking for lunch, I'm tired of typing, I'll catch you guy's lata!

PS: Don't forget about the gig with HOKUM at Roxy's on 3rd March, it's gonna be sex!

Peace,

Gump
