From Razorcake #53...
PG-13S, THE: Get Back: 7" No surprises here: Is there any chance in hell that a band named the PG-13s is not gonna be pop punk? Semi-snotty vocals, a song called “........Winona,” and a bass player named Ska Jeff—you make the call. Not any better or worse than most other bands of this style, but not nearly as good as, say, the Manges. This single has a download card for digital representation. Good, solid pop punk. If you dig the Riptides, Vapids, Copyrights, etc., you will want to be all over this Canadian pop punk group from ........Ottawa. –Mike Frame (Merman)

neat-o, thanks to Sam Sutherland for the cool review!
The PG-13s
Get Back
By Sam Sutherland
This is some fun shit. These guys play pop punk like Screeching Weasel and the Groovie Ghoulies played pop punk: snotty, catchy and just literal enough to be interesting. From love songs about Winona Ryder to love songs about real girls, these are endearingly cheesy, catchy songs that equally recall Honest Don's comps and the romanticism of the seventh grade. Hailing from Ottawa, these guys have a sound similar to fellow capital city pop punks the Creeps, although they've replaced the morbidity with 100-percent lovelorn swooning. With four songs, this seven-inch packs a solid, quick punch and makes you want to listen to the doubled guitar solo on "Sasha Sasha" a whole lot. (Merman)

hello the internet! here's a review of "get back" courtesy of squid pro quo...
"Sounds like Lagwagon!"
...is what popped into my head after I hit go on my turntable, enabling the first track, "Sure Thing." The PG-13s are a four-piece from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and just released a four-song EP on Merman Records called "Get Back" on June 15, 2009.
The first song, "Sure Thing," seems to draw past and present influences from doo-wop bands to modern day pop punk. It's just over two minutes long and makes for a good intro song to the EP.
"Sasha Sasha" is a little closer to three minutes, stretching out the "Oohs" as lead singer Sean croons over this Sasha chick. Very good, and I think I hear a little Saves The Day in there? Whether the influence is there or not, their voices sound similar, which is a good thing. Very poppy, but stays on the correct side of the thin line separating "pop punk" from "this is too poppy."
There's a track on here called "Winona" which I think to be about Winona Ryder. The following line led me to this conclusion:
"I'll bail you out when things just get so tough/Don't worry about what they'll say/I won't let them take you away." America's favorite little shoplifter.
The last song, "Oh So," I had heard previously on an online compilation called "Punk Rock Pot Luck Vol. 3." It's got a sweet catchy solo in the middle of the song and it reminds me a little of Weezer. It's a real lovey-dovey song with the "ba da bas" and "oohs and ahhs." I dig it. Three stars out of five. The band is pretty good, although one thing I would change is the frequency of the rhymes in "Oh So" because at some points, it seems a little excessive. But songs like "Sasha Sasha" redeem it with the band's originality. Pop punk is a real hard genre for a band to bring something new to the table because really, there's only so much you can do with a few chords and a broken or swollen heart. Their progression in their songs reminds me a little of The Leftovers - a very power pop and 60s rock/pop-influenced band. Instead of the progression of say, a Riverdales or a Ramones tune, it goes a little longer and in not-so-typical places, making the verses and chorus a little longer and well, kinda better.

Hey Gang!
I'm going to try and keep this brief, cause my fat fingers keep closing this window on Sean's iPhone, causing me to be very un-PG-13. We're rolling down the road east between Calgary and Regina and Ska Jeezy ate an egg salad sandwich for breakfast. Not cool for the rest of us in the van. Oh Jeezy.
Vanna Lives and is purrrrrrring like a kitten again. Woot! She even made it over the Mountains and back. So after getting to Ymir BC, we ended up partying at the Parello's instead of playing, which was all good. Great family! They took us in, fed us, and took us for our first Mountain stream dip, having never met us. Their hospitality is second to none! Many thanks and hi-fives to Alan, Janice, Mike, Hannah and Mother Parello for being such kind souls. Also, big thanks to our new pal Murray for helping us out.
Six mile was just as great with everyone at the Common House feeding us and generally being cool cats. The food was great and so was the company. Thanks for supporting us even though we're so loud. ; ) Many hugs and kisses to Molly and Brad, Justinomics, Aaron, Mackenzie, and all our new friends. Six mile was our first of two shows with our buddy bands Despite All This and Two Kids Running Away. If these cats come through your town ( and they will! It's inevitable) go check them out. Great tunes with lots of heart and soul. We talked about it last night in Calgary, and we've decided we're now BFFs.
Calgary was killer with a double show day! First we played the best all ages we've ever seen, The New Black. Awesome spot. Huge thanks to Isaac and Darren for hooking us up with the show and being great dudes and to Jay for making us sound great. Thanks also to One Hundred owls for rocking out with us, and for loving music.
The night show was at Vern's and the party continued! Big thanks to Clint for the show, as well as to the Back Alley Boozers. Sadly we had to leave our friends DAT and TKRA (see above). We wish them all the best, and happy travels. Starla, Toadie, Steve, and Josh, we'll see you soon.
I think that's brings us up to speed. If I forgot anyone, I'm very sorry, but I was just in BC. ; ). We've only got a few shows left, so if you're along the way, come rock out! We wanna see your smilin' faces.
stay rad,
-Pat

Hey Friends!
How are you? You look well today. What's up with the PGs? Well I'll tell you.
So I'm writing to you right now from a motel in Whitecourt, Alberta. Vanna is down, but not out. Carrying five sweaty, stinky dudes, and a crap load of gear took it out of her, and she tapped on a hill in Northern Alberta. The good news is, we'll be back on the road by tomorrow afternoon. Hooray! So, we're still gonna see you crazy kids in Ymir tomorrow, so we've got that going for us.
The last two shows were awesome and we're still having a blast dancin, drinkin, and singing with everybody. If you missed us on the way out, come hang out at one of the shows on the way back across the country. We're stoked to see you. Edmonton was a great night, and if you didn't get a chance to make it out to the "Green Day After Party" it's a shame as it was a great time. If you're in Edmonton, go hang out at the Likwid lounge. The staff, and regulars are awesome people. Many many thanks go out to our new pal Mark for being a great sound guy, and putting us up, as well as to Kate for making delicious Caesar's, and being a rad chick. Thanks as well go out to Eamon McGrath for playing with us. Great times.
Peace River! We love you. If you're in a touring band, or a traveller, stop in this town. Outside of being breath-takingly beautiful, the people are amazing. We played at the Java Domain, a very cool coffee place. There were people of all ages, and we had a great time dancing and singing with you. Super Hi-fives go to "Big Toe" Joe for hooking us up with the show, giving us beer, and a place to stay. Hi-fives also to our new pals Sangie (You're too cute, we've decided we're coming to NYC soon), Michelle(Stay punk lady!), Matt, and Scobie- the pitchfork wielding townie. Thanks also to the deer that ran by us when we were sitting outside of Rusty's. Finally last but not least, a huge thanks to the friendly strangers who picked up myself and Little Joey somewhere out side of Valleyview Alberta. We had to hitch into Whitecourt cause Bulltit said we couldn't come in the tow truck. The big meany. So thank you to our new pal from Cape Breton, Jason, as well as to Lauren and Florence.
I think that's all for now. Again, the dancing and singing isn't stopping yet, so come join the party. Even Bulltit's been busting a move, and that should tell you something. : )
See you cats at the next show,
-Pat The PG-13s.

Just a quick update!

Pick one up at a show, or head on over to MermanRecords.com for a copy!
Here's an early review from PunkRockReview.org
The PG-13’s- “Get Back” 4/5 – More Pop than punk, Pop Punk This album puts the Pop in Pop punk to the extreme. The album has slightly bratty vocals and 4 songs with lyrics about liking girls, girls, girls, & girls. Each song has its own little tribute to a different girl and how they stole their hearts. I enjoy that each of these songs is similar in style, but different enough in melody, hooks, and tempo to make each song stand out on its own. My only complaint about this album is (more of a personal complaint) that I’ve heard three of the four songs on this 7” previously. Ok so maybe those three songs were leaked to me a few months ago, but still I would have loved to hear some new songs from these Poppy Canadian Crooners I just really enjoy their music.

Hey everyobody, Check out the following article, which ran in the Arts section of today's Ottawa Citizen: Fateema Sayani - In the Clubs
PG-13S ON 45
The PG-13s’ new seveninch, Get Back, is the debut release from Merman
Records, out of Palmerston, Ont. The Ottawa band went hunting around
for representation last year when they were recording the four tunes
and discovered the upstart label. The songs will be available Tuesday
on iTunes, while the record can be found stage-side.
Started by Jeff Czuba five years ago, the band recently welcomed bass
player “Ska” Jeff Hurter to the fold, while Sean Hi-Tone (Sean
Tolentino, guitar) is also a recent recruit. New members led to a new
sound. Formerly poppunk purveyors, constructing a soundtrack for the
allages crowd, The PG-13s are reaching out to a G audience.
Sasha Sasha is their first stab at a slower-paced song. “We used to try
to get to the end of the song really quickly,” drummer Pat Birch says.
“We’re working with dynamics a bit more.” Pop remains the undercurrent
to each song. “It’s important to us that anyone can enjoy it,” he says.
“We’re not taking you to math class to listen to our music.”
The PG-13s take off for a 15date national tour in July. See them off
Wednesday when the band plays Zaphod Beeblebrox with tourmates The
Rough Sea and guests L’abasheeda. 27 York St., 8 p.m., $6.
