Current mood:  nostalgic

Okay was watching a special on VH1 about the 70's and made me think of this story!

So I was about 10 years old and was hanging with my older brother and his friends. They decided they were going to go and jump the train(subway) I initially decided not to join them. I thought jumping the train meant climbling on top of an apartment building near the elevated subway and jumping on top of the train like they did in the old western films.

Of course they called me a chicken and I gave in. I was not sure why we were sneaking up the staircase of the subway and not climbing up the fire escape of a nearby building?. I heard the train coming and then realized that jumping the train meant jumping over the turnstyle so you did not have to pay the fare. In my case it was actually running under the turnstyle-it was exciting to time it it so you could make the train without the attendant catching you!!

At that time the City buses had bumpers in the back and people would jump on them and hold on to the  back of the bus for a free ride. Sometimes you would see 4 or 5 people holding on. Of course there were many injuries and a few casulaties and they got rid of the bumpers!
