"I work as an architect by day, amateur musician by night...and artist in most of the in-between hours. One of my early childhood memories is of the pivotal weekend morning when I figured out how to color within the lines in my coloring book. I wasn't crazy about the picture (a clown - yikes)...but I think that is perhaps why I eventually developed my own collection of pictures. My style is simple: two dimensional ink drawings that I fill in with watercolor paint. That's it! I do also work in other media, such as acrylic on canvas, but the style principles remain the same. I'm inspired by lots of things: nature, everyday objects, people. My goal is to take this inspiration and create something that can either make somebody smile or be enjoyable for the eyes..."

Emmalee "Cupcake" Bozek, a printmaking graduate of the University of Washington, is a gifted local artist with strong ties to the underground artist community. Bauhaus

Featuring:Natalie Oswald, painting

I paint to explore the vanity and fragility of the natural world. At times, painting becomes my personal indulgence and tribute to all things delightful. Birds soar over imaginary landscapes and koi are wrapped in swirling layers of iridescent waves. Tragedy weaves its way into my work, a reminder of the transient nature of beauty. Flowers grow from husks of grenades, sinister streams of dripping paint obscure a tranquil landscape and an innocent maiden sinks into the deep sea. Inspired by a childhood in the rural Northwest and travels to Asia, the imagery found in my work is rooted in the relentless process of growth and decay.

Featuring: Christie Jenkins, photography

Born in Dallas, Texas, at age five Christie snapped her first photo that was later published. Twenty years later, New York literary circles credited her with starting a trend - the genre of photos of men for women, with her landmark little book BUNS: A Woman Looks At Men's. It and the subsequent five calendars sold over one million copies for G. P. Putnam, and she was a popular guest on the talk show circuit. Respected as a quality portrait artist in Hollywood, her private celebrity work has appeared in magazines such as People, TV Guide, USA Today, Playbill, Cosmo, US, Soap Opera Digest and many international publications, as well as gracing several book covers. She's photographed two Olympic Games and in 1988 was the most widely published photographer of Figure Skating in the world, with TIME Magazine nominating one shot as "The Best Sports Photograph of the Year." From a humanitarian medical family, her parents gave her a deep sense of spirituality, and having never studied photography in any way, Miss Jenkins feels her gifts were specifically God-given. Miss Jenkins has had three solo shows of her work, and lives in Los Angeles with her beloved cats.

Artist Reception for Carole d'Inverno on Tuesday, October 14th from 6-9pm
Come welcome the newest member to join the group, rotating show featuring works from 7 local artists: Carole d'Inverno, Britt Freda, Jason Lien, Doris Mosler, Jennifer Stennhouse, Jim Stoccardo and Uyen Phong Tran

Carole d'Inverno

"Shape, surface and color are my entry into personal expression. I work mostly wet on wet, allowing the painting to develop organically. The surface is built up with oil gesso and oil paint as a dialogue arises between the developing shapes and their colors. The emptiness of the background enhances the simplicity of the forms."

www.caroledinverno.net

Britt Freda

"This series opens a visual portal of discussion focusing on that which is common, pedestrian and easily overlooked but which illuminates the brilliantly beautiful and stunning simplicity of things that feed us, body, mind and soul."

www.brittfreda.com

Jason Lien

"The mixed media works by contemporary landscape painter Jason Arne Lien convey complex and sometimes dark emotional messages beneath their rich and candy-coated exterior."

Doris Mosler

"After attending workshops in monotype and experimenting with collage, I knew I had found a medium that offered the versatility and spontaneity I love and that would satisfy my inner sense of adventure. When I'm working, the edge of what is 'given' and what is 'unknown' presents a unique space of aliveness, curiosity about outcome, and finally satisfaction that, for me, is rarely found in such potent and pleasurable form anywhere else in life."

www.dorismosler.com

Jennifer Stennhouse

Jim Stoccardo

Jim Stoccardo is deeply influenced by the mysterious and often magical qualities of the northwest sky; with its many subtle shades of grey Stoccardo finds an endless pallet of moody settings in which to work.

www.jimstoccardo.com

Uyen Phong Tran

"Inspired by the strong and influential women in her life, this latest series is representative of the feminine form and their beautiful complex layers."

Tuesday, October 14, from 5:00-6:30pm
Gallery will remain open until 10:30pm

Fueled by intense introspection and a working-class ethic, I am intent on self-expression and self-discovery through the cultivation of my own, singular sense of style and technique.
I work to convey not only a meditative quality and a reflection of spiritual energies in my art, but I also seek to maintain a balanced sense of levity and humor.
Aesthetically, I'm impassioned by the bold simplicity of fundamental shapes, sharp lines, solid colors, purity and precision, and I strive to create work that reflects that.
My crisp, clean work is intended as a visual, contemplative antidote to our society's sometimes excessive, over-stimulated and chaotic tendencies.

Featuring: Bob Dzielak

Bob Dzielak is a Seattle artist whose paintings reflect his tongue-in-cheek wit and summons an eerie and creepy mood (and occasionally, both). His sarcastic sense of humor comes out when he paints "fellas"; paintings of what appear to be sad people that strangely resemble the artist. Other paintings reflect an exploration of Bob's dark sense of humor and an embrace of the macabre; taking inspiration from the bones and skulls of thousands of plague victims used to decorate an ossuary in the Czech Republic. Finally, other works incorporate images of antique dolls are requisitely disturbing, as they bring these dolls to life.

To me, Koi fish (and trees too) evoke a feeling of something very graceful, free, and yet stable. It is fascinating to transform these compositions of nature into art. Nature creates an endless variety of subject matter, each one with its own unique character, and that individuality influences my choice of painting techniques.

When Liv learned encaustic, it was love at first play, because that is what this medium brings to her—a sense of whimsy and play. It is so unlike any other medium, very unpredictable, somewhat uncontrollable. Her artist tools include a blow torch, beeswax, old magazines, photos, oil paint, Adobe Photoshop, Sumi paper, razor blades, ink, and a mug of coffee. For the past year, Liv has been exploring common shapes and imagery to create a personal symbolism. Her images are chosen carefully, and there are double meanings to nearly everything.

The Beauty of Life is enhanced by the beauty of things that have lived before, and life itself.  The Beauty of Death is experienced in such sorrow that its beauty is often forgotten or over looked.  Living follows such a peculiar line often fragmented and forged together at its weakest points.  All things that live must die…. Holding in the balance….The Life Line.

Spray paint, marker, pencil, chalk on cardboard Tuesday August 12th. 6-9pm, FREE

It has been said that a transexual's story is written on their body. Artist Noelle Walker's work is concerned with that idea --- the juxtaposition of body and the word, construction and self-construction, text and subtext. It refocuses W.E.B. DuBois' concept of "twoness" on transgenderism.  Her pieces are in spray paint, other times drawn in marker that will sometimes eat through other parts of the work. The media used is often permanent, bold, and solid.

The Colors of Belly Dancers
Painting by Gene Rivas

Cabaret Style Belly Dance performance by Najla at 6pm
Gallery will remain open during dancing 6:30-10:30pm

Part of 2TUE Capitol Hill Art Walk.
Free and open to the public

The Colors of Belly Dancers is a collection of twelve paintings that attempts to capture the Power and Intoxicating Beauty of the Cabaret Style Belly Dancers that grace our Seattle community. Not intended to be portraits, the paintings were modeled by three of Seattle's most accomplished performers, who displayed for the artist their finest dance and most captivating costumes. The dancers chosen to model for the project were Amira, Najla and Safina, and poses from each were used for four of the paintings.
The two year project tries to display the mood and theme that colors can bring to a performance. Perhaps a white can sometimes bring a feeling of nobility, and maybe a brilliant red can trigger an emotion of firey passion.
The various poses represent moments in the dance, and moments of pause. Sometimes the dancer is caught in a flash of pure beauty, or in a movement that either has the veiwer gazing in the direction of the dancer, or locking eyes with that brief moment of awe.

Ever wonder what it takes to make the Capitol Hill Art Walk possible?
Audrey,Lux and Karl are looking for folks to help make it happen.

What we do:
We have an ever growing list of participating locations that need to be called and emailed each month to gather their Artist bios and images.
Next, all this information is compiled in a list that goes to Lux and Karl...
Karl makes the map, Lux updates the website with said artist info and resized images....
Next, the map goes to the printer and then must be distributed a couple days before the event.
Then, we all bask in the warm glow that bringing our vibrant and talented community brings.  Added bonus: we are actively keeping Art alive in Seattle.

WHERE YOU COME IN:
We need a team of about 4 more people who have about 2 hours a month or more that they would like to donate to help call and email our vendors and then distribute the maps. Do one task or the other or both.... we don't care... we just really need your support to keep the Capitol Hill Art Walk alive.

Please email us at capitolhillartwalk@gmail.com

BIG THANKS & KISSES!!!

Amanda DeSilver:  Early Works

Join us for a reception with the artist
Tuesday, May 13, from 5:00-6:30pm, gallery will remain open during dancing 6:30-10:30pm

Part of 2TUE Capitol Hill Art Walk.
Free and open to the public

Traveling the country and abroad, Amanda seeks inspiration from her surroundings.  Whether in the midst of the natural beauty of the Northwest or in the vast desert of California, she discovers landscapes that resonate with her emotions. Her work can be described as "Emotional Landscapes," from the representational to the abstract.  Using an Expressionist point of view, Amanda takes photographs of her subject with an eye to transform the image into a canvas swirling with color and form, thus evoking a dramatic or playful response to the outside world.

Color is also an important theme in Amanda's work.  From bold and definitive to soft and subtle, her dramatic use of color is often the first attribute noticed by the viewer.  Whether the shade is being used in a conventional or non conventional way, it can be interpreted as either a reaction to the abundance of the vibrant hues that occur in our Northwest landscape, or simply an emotional response.

Amanda creates an impression of the world we live in, through a bold use of form and her individual interpretation of color.  Being able to find solace or an escape from the humdrum of the everyday world within the images she creates allows the viewer a chance to step back from the activity of daily life and locate a harmony within oneself.
