Last year, Springfield hosted its first ever Self-Employment in the Arts Conference. Based on the tremendous turnout last year, we feel this event is something people are interested in, and that the music industry should be involved in too.

Our project team was able to meet with the organizer of the conference and worked out a deal to get a tract specifically for musicians in this year's conference.

THIS is HUGE for us. There are only 7 SEA Conferences held in the US and Springfield has one! And we're involved!

More info will be coming, but here's the basics:

Date: March 14th
Time: 9:30-4
Location: Trustee Science Center - Drury University
Springfield, MO
Cost: $50.

This event is a great opportunity for those looking to make music their career, or just play for some extra income.
Topics to be covered:
- Promoting, Marketing, and Selling Your Music
- Legal Matters in the Arts
- Production in Today's Music Industry
- Artists as Bookkeepers.

There are also 2 presentations by the keynote speaker, lunch, and a Q&A panel.

Check out the website: SEA OzArts Conference '09

This project has been fortunate enough to receive some excellent free press from a variety of different areas.

First, we were covered by The Four Four music blog.

College Night on C-Street was a huge success with significant news-media coverage.

GO Magazine came out for the Open Mic Night and took some great pictures!

And today the latest addition of The Drury Mirror has an ARTICLE about our project and the direction we're headed. You should check out all of these great websites and articles.

We wanted to give a shout out to all of them for helping make this project a success so far.

After a summer long hiatus from local concerts (have to love summer jobs), I was drawn back in by an event that sounded too good to miss. I was not disappointed. On top of seeing some old friends for the first time in months, I was introduced to an incredible band I had yet to experience and got to see the final show of another incredible group of musicians. The show opened with The Springs (myspace.com/thesprings) pulling out all of the stops for their final show together. The rock gods had to be impressed. Next up came a band I've heard but yet to experience live. Rebellions Fall (myspace.com/rebellionsfallmusic) was absolutely incredible and I look forward to seeing them again very soon. The mix of hardcore and rock rhythms was great. They also get major props for the best intro. Cloud City (myspace.com/cloudcityofficial) followed Rebellions Fall with a solid set. You can always count on Cloud City (formerly Better Left Behind) to put on a great show. Last up was The Radiance Effect (myspace.com/theradianceeffect), a band you should defintely get to know if you don't already. Playing a whole show in front of your hometown crowd with competely new material is hard to do, but the guys pulled it off nicely. They also get props for having the best outro with a Journey cover that they nailed. The show was their CD release party and the "free" CD with admission was definitely a great bonus. The sound for the entire night was perfect. It was by far the best concert I've seen in Springfield in years.

I'm going to try my hand at reviewing concerts and local music for a campus paper at Drury. If you want me to review your concert please let me know when and where and I'll do my best to be there.

Make-It is working with Springfield's own Q102.1 to help bring local music to the airwaves and set up seminars for local bands. This is a developing lead and I am extremely excited about it. Team members will go to meet with Q102 staff on Monday to discuss the logistics of this project and work on building our relationship. We hope to have speakers from national labels and other interesting ideas. Please leave a comment with your own ideas as this project is here to help you! be sure to drop by Q102's website and keep your eyes open for further developments!!

The Make-It team has been working hard to start the semester and has built up some contacts for local bands! 100.1 the Buzz out of Jefferson City has been a leader in helping JC/CoMo bands get airtime and shows at the popular Blue Note venue in Columbia. We contacted the station about getting Springfield bands on the air and they are enthusiastic about the idea. Check out their Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/hometownbuzz and website: buzz.fm for more details. I make it up to JC about once a month so if you want to send CDs with me let me know.
