BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB w/ Damien Jurado & John Vanderslice - *solo* Leeds

As you can see, I have a number of upcoming gigs in Germany coming up, and as you can see they're all marked *solo*

Throughout trying to get Honour Before Glory off the ground, I came to abandon the idea of these songs being performed by me and a guitar - however an offer I could not refuse from my friends Sometree changed that. They asked if I could come over and perform with them on my own, and since then I've been trying to work out how. Mostly it will be songs not featured on the main page.

I don't 'want' Honour Before Project to be synonymous with simply me & a guitar, so after Germany I won't be playing a lot of gigs like this, except when it will work really well. Like supporting the fantastic Damien Jurado. When further recording commences, thinking will begin on a bigger live proposition.

But Germany will be lots and lots of fun

Hello! So if you weren't aware of our massive summer tour, here are the dates...

Saturday 9th August - Moor Music festival

The lineup is simply smashing and you can get more info here, and the Moor fest website!
(scroll to the bottom of this message for the lineup too!)

Also, they have one of those snazzy facebook pages here.

And if you were planning to stay the whole weekend, I hear they're looking for Stewards.
( i THINK this means you get to enjoy the festival for free, between working 12 hours throughout the weekend) might be a sweet deal!

But in order to have enough money for it all to happen, theres a fundraiser happening THIS THURSDAY at our favourite place, the Brudenell Social Club!
I'll put a flyer below with all the bits and bobs on, and hopefully see you there.

cool! sorry it's been a while. We're all well, just busy with our own things, which is nice, nice to have time for things.

see you thursday! :)
xx

Thurs 17th - Dundee - Fat Sams

What a confusing venue. One of those big club type efforts with a room where they put bands in.Had lovely food from a bar round the corner, and the T-lodge was within spitting distance. The gig was pretty rocking, although it wasn't packed everyone seemed to enjoy it. Tom struggled with his voice a lot, and so we had concerns for tommorrows gig. Jo-Fo had a few vehicle problems later on, but a man in a florcesent jacket turned up in a van with flashy lights to rescue them.
I've been told it's unfair to do Rider and crowd ratings. Sorry :(

Fri 18th - Newcastle - Cancelled :(
If Tom had sung, you wouldn't have heard anything.
Had breakfast in a lovely little cafe (beans on toast and blackcurrant tea for me), then headed on the way home.

Sun 20th - Liverpool - Barfly
Everyone was nice and relaxed after two days recovery from the start of tour, but then everyone was back to being knackered after a load in-combination of many many steps and many many flight cases. First date with Errors, and we were also joined by CatsandCatsandCats. It got a bit confusing while we worked out who everyone was and what band they were in. Me and Al (Tour Manager) got the merch back on track, with the addition to my homemade badges. Everyone was suitably impressed by both our supports, and we had a lovely evening. All aboard for the T-lodge express.

Mon 21st - Bristol - Thekla
After waking up and having a wonder around sunny Liverpool, I grabbed a jacket potato to eat on the way to Bristol. Had a cool cruise down the motorway then arrived at the boat we would call home for the evening. I like both the Thekla, and the Nottingham gang of venues which are interlinked, they seem to have everything sorted just cool. Plus the Thekla is a BOAT.+10 cool points.
Just us and Errors tonight. I've decided they could easily fit into the same sentence of Berg Sans Nipple, being that post rock kind of experimental dancey nice-ness that doesn't hurt your ears or your head. We were thinking of staying for the studenty club night afterwards, where we were promised there'd be guys in gorilla suits. But after reconsideration, we realised we should really have an early night to be on top form for the XFM session and London show tommorrow.

Tues 22nd - London - XFM & Kings College
Arrived into London later than planned, but at least we'd all eaten. Loaded into XFM and got set up for the session. It's always a weird one, because the drummer has their own room, and instead of playing through cabs, the guitarists play through PODs into the desk. We played Breaking Standing, Gravity and Heat and Don't Reinvent for them. I think it's available to listen to online somewhere.
Then we shooted off to Kings College to hang out (we skipped soundcheck to fit in the session) Was lovely to see Grammatics again, and they played an awesome show. Didn't get to see much of Errors as I running around doing things that I would have otherwise done in soundcheck. The crowd was both awesome and celeb-tastic, Al Youthmovies even took a turn on merch for us. We couldn't really understand why people wanted to jump on the stage during Spanish Triangles.... it IS a quiet song after all. Nevermind. I'd like to say they ruined the gig for me, but the gig was awesome, so they didn't.
There were plans to meet iLiKETRAiNS (who also played in London), but they are pussies and went home. Mido (sound), Rob, Tom and Gareth (Manager) went out to Cro Bar, met up with members of other pop groups and generally had a drunken time. (so i hear)

Weds 23rd - Portsmouth - 6 Music / Wedgewood Rooms
Had to be up at a gruelling 9.30am to go to 6 Music studios to do a session for 'The Hub' as part of George Lamb's show. Did a couple of run throughs before Gareth arrived with breakfast. Not having our guest guitarist Jon with us (who has helped us do acoustic stuff before), Whiskas used the loop pedals with his acoustic, so we weren't sure how it'd turn out. But it seemed to be fine and just sound a bit different! Tom still had a bit of cold so took it easy during the run throughs.
I didn't previously know who George Lamb was, but he seemed like a nice fellow when we met him. Generally had that 'I'm a presenter' kind of arrogrant air about him, but didn't otherwise offend me. Luckily he knew we didn't have an 'i' infront of our name, but still managed to promote the show '"On the 22nd of April at Kings College Leeds" doh!
Raced down to Portsmouth (where it was bright and sunny) in time for a soundcheck. Al and I reorganised the merch by 500%. Like it went from shit to amazingly organised.
The boys minus me and Al went for a curry, which they reviewed as 'alright'. Grammatics were in the same T-lodge, so we re-shuffled our rooming to save them having to squeeze 7 of them in 1 room.

Thurs 24th - Kingston - New Slang @ The Works
After lunch with the Grammatics, we tootled along to Kingston. Arriving early we had time for a potter around the town, of which i was suitably impressed. It's a pretty nice place! Didn't expect the venue to be a massive club jobby, but the club night seemed to be well set up. I didn't realise it's such an ace / big club night, respect to them! and damn my ignorance. Pretty disappointed that I totally forgot to go to Banquet records, but Whiskas went. With an adequate buy out we decided to treat ourselves to a posh dinner by the river. I had an expensive £4 smoothie, but I feel like it's helped a load to shift my cold.
Buttonhead were first .. us, who were pretty cool, possibely comparible to Deerhoof in a way. +10 points for a drummer who's a girl (as apposed to a a girl who plays drums. THERES A BIG DIFFERENCE)
We changed the setlist a bit to suit a clubnight, dropped the slower ones and added some phat rock in. This place seemed to play some top tunes, very impressed to hear This Aint Vegas before we went on, I endeavour to come back for a dance some day.

Fri 25th - Birimingham - Barfly
We had stayed in Oxford t-lodge, because originally yesterday was a day off, and so we planned to go see iLiKETRAiNS.But we ditched that plan when we got offered the Kingston show.
So, being in the vicinity we decided to catch up with them for lunch. (well everyone else did, breakfast with my cousin over-ran so I didn't make it) Anyway, I heard both the food and TRAiNS were good.
Birmingham barfly was a little damp (i hear they've had flooding problems), but that didnt ruin the usual dingy atmosphere one bit. Last night with Errors, was sad, but good, sad because we won't see them for a while, good because they're a really good band. I bought them a box of Krispy Kreme's which went down well. Wagamama's for tea with Matt of You Animals. The gig was pretty cool, but i'm sorry to admit that I was totally on autopilot. Being the last of 7 gigs in a row, with 2 addittional sessions and bearing the brunt of a cold, i was pretty tired, and think everyone else was less than 100% too. Time to go home.
Big thanks to the dude at the Costa who gave me super loads of cream and marshmellows on my hot chocolate, and then a free chocolate stirrer because he couldn't find any plastic spoons. I wasn't flirting. Honest.

Glasgow - 15th April - King Tuts
It's lovely to be back, on tour and in King Tuts. Soundcheck went pretty swimmingly, so we didn't see all the technical onstage problems on the horizon. Poo.
Johnny Foreigner are all very lovely. Our merch didn't arrive, which was also a bit rubbish, but it was a pretty pumped gig (fueled by Irn Bru) and the kids seemed to have havin it too. We'd like to thank Travel lodge for sponcering this tour, the new white duvet covers are proper classy.
Rider Rating - 6/10 (sandwiches, pop, beer, inhouse catering is a bonus)
Crowd Rating - 8/10

Aberdeen - 16th April - Drummonds
Our merch arrived! The boys comments were 'It's all fucking pink!"
My reply was, "well, you didn't object when I was discussing designs." But it is all very swish. Sad to hear that Kef is going to be turned into a hotel, but Drummonds was a more than adequate venue.
Aberdeen T-lodge was awesomely close. The boys minus Whiskas went to have it, I remember talking to Bentley (guitar tech) as he stumbled into our hotel room. Apparently tequila was involved.
Rider Rating - 9/10 (Raspberries, Strawberries, sandwich meat+ cheese, Green&Blacks choc)
Crowd Rating - 7/10

As you know by reading this site, we have recently completed our second album, which will be called "Life Processes"

There are not a lot of facts about the album yet, but it will be out early next year and feature 11 tracks including 'We Are Grey Matter'. It was all recorded June-August in Seattle, WA with Matt Bayles

We will be partaking in a short tour in late October with lovelies I Was A Cub Scout previewing some new tracks and re-hashing old favourites. Dates will be announced early next week. In the meantime please enjoy our festival appearences featured in the right-hand column

As the ¡Forward, Russia! live machine swings into action, we are very pleased to be able to play the re-scheduled Truck Festival on Saturday 22nd September

We were unable to play the original date as we were recording the new album, and in the sadness of the original cancellation we found our way back together again. Should be much fun

We are also hoping to confirm a short run of dates in small venues accross the UK towards the end of October which will be jolly. These are in the final stages of planning and we will let you know the details as soon as we do

More when we have it, and maybe some photo's from recording....

So, the album is finished.

Is it good? I don't know, and I'm not sure any of us do. Will we ever? Probably not.

We mastered on the 15th; time zones and their contempories are hard to follow these days but hopefully that is some help. Tonight we watched Pelican and said goodbye to our Seattle friends. Special thanks must go to Matt Bayles (will anyone else ever care that much about hi-hats?) and Fernando (will anyone else ever care so much about drink/girls?).

This record has been a serious ordeal: I can't believe we have had the opportunity to do what we want and take the time to do it; what a process. It has taken my life and I am looking forward to letting go of it. I will listen to the album on the plane tomorrow and hopefully my happiness will be enough for a few weeks.

That does, however, leave the not insignificant matter of Whiskas' birthday. This occurs mid-air (the poor fellow loses 8 hours due to time differences) so we intend to "get on it" in the appropriate manner. British Airways offer complimentary alcohol, so this should be easy enough. Let's just hope to god that we don't stray from "lad" to "wasteman".

Anyone who has read this thing all along, thank you for caring. We will see you somewhere real soon.

Tom xxx
