This week I am posting something that I really, really like, but is just a little long for my Daily Dose of Happiness formet.  It was passed along to me by a reader, but the author is not known.

A Friend's Prayer

A ship was wracked during a storm at sea only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert-like island.  The two survivors, not knowingly, what to do, agreed to pray to God.  However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the island between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.

The first thing they prayed for was food.  The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the island, and he was able to eat its fruits.  The other man's side of island remained bare.

After a week, the first man was lonesome and he decided to pray for a wife.  The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the island.  On the other side of the island, the second man had nothing.

Soon, the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food.  The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him.  However, the second man still had nothing.

Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the island.  In the morning, a ship docked at his side of the island.  He boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island.  He considered the second man unworthy to receive God's blessings, since none of his prayers was answered.

As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven: "Why are you leaving your friend on the island?"

"My blessings are mine alone, because I prayed for them," the first man answered.  "His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything."

"You are wrong!" the voice said.  "He had only one prayer, which I answered.  If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessing."

"Tell me," the first man asked the voice, "What did he pray for?"

"He prayed that all your prayers be answered?

The End.

What did I miss while I was away at a confeence in Chicago?  I missed posting the weekly Daily Dose pick, so I'll post one today.  This one is just a bit on the wry side:

FITNESS

Have you recently tried to change the font in your Alphabet Soup?

Have you had difficulties operating your pillow, because the universal remote won't make it fluff?

Have you been frustrated trying to figure out how to change the picture on your window?

Does it frustrate you that the pause button won't work on the neighbor's dog?

Maybe you've been working too hard at your computer or perhaps playing too hard.  You probably have not been moving around enough.  Physical fitness is a part a stress-free and happy life.

Go ahead and fluff your pillow...manually.

No, this is not a cry for help...except from the Internet cutting in and out from the ice storm outside.  But it is this week's selection from the Daily Dose of Happiness:

HELP

The light bulb burned out...again!  I don't know about your house, but in ours, we can predict which light bulb will burn out next.  Some have not been changed in the years we have been here.  Others have been changed over and over and over.

The ones that require changing most frequently are the ones on the highest ceilings.

No problem.  We have the help of a step ladder.

In life there are many things that seem just out of reach, but with a little help, we can reach an amazing array of opportunities.

All you need is to ask for help.

I always like to annoucne new clients here.  It's fun; it makes me feel like the business is growing (especially because I don't announce when client projects end!)

In this case, the client is Lavish Living Luxury Rentals, who rent out luxury homes and villas, yachts, aircaraft and exotic cars.  This one promises to be fun, since for many people renting a luxury home or mansion, or renting an exotic car, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a lot like going on an around-the-world tour or booking a room on a space station.

Check out the luxury and exotic car rentals and the mansion rentals page.

Something must be wrong.  I am not getting my own Daily Dose of Happiness this week.  nevertheless, here is one that I sent out that will probably jar a few folks (but only those who could use a nudge, anyway).

CHANGE

Are you waiting for change?

Let's face it.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and if you look hard you can see it.  Where many of us go wrong is that we see the light, we let out a sigh of release and we wait to get to the light at the end of the tunnel.

And we wait.

And we wait.

And eventually we decide that their really is no light at the end of the tunnel because it still seems so far away.

On the other hand, many others see the light at the end of the tunnel, shout with joy, and run toward the light.

And we run.

And we run.

And eventually there is no light at the end of the tunnel and there is no tunnel, because we run out of the tunnel into the light.

Are you still sitting in a dark tunnel?  Get on your feet and start running.  It's the only way out.

I am posting today's Daily Dose of Happiness, because I believe it to be an important one.  That's all.

INTEGRITY

What is the one most important character trait to hold?  We could debate that for a long time, but let me offer integrity as a very likely candidate.

Integrity is the measure of how close are the things we say we believe (by words, in our thoughts, etc.) and what we show we believe through our actions.  The integrity gap is the space between what we say we believe and what we show we believe.

Everybody falls into the gap sometimes.  People who believe in the law, drive over the speed limit.  People who think steeling is wrong will take things when they think nobody will miss them.  People who believe we should leave something behind for future generations still consume oodles of unnecessary items.

We become happier when the integrity gap is small, because we are doing the right thing by our own standards.  What can you do to narrow your integrity gap?

I know it's a couple days late, but I thought I would mention that halloween was fun, starting with this pirate running around town with his sidekick, handing out treats to the ladies at the post office, the bank, on the street, in friends' driveways, etc.

Good thing Halloween fell when it did.  The very next Day, Little Lady came down with the chicken pox.  She's home from school now.  I told her to say a very big "Thank You" prayer to God, for delaying the chicken pox.  Had it come a few days earlier, it would have stopped two birthday parties and Halloween.

I think it has been our most popular topic ever, with many people offering their thoughts on how far to go to help people.  Some call for balance; others for helping people always and never asking for compensation (people who don't earn a living I suppose) and a few who think they help way too much and it will be the death of them yet.  There are a wide range of views out there, and they all started with this posting:

HELP

Sometimes I spend too much time talking to prospective clients.  They ask questions...and I answer them.  The problem is that questions go on forever, but I am naturally inclined to answer questions and be helpful.  Of course, this can also be good marketing, but I tend to be more helpful than just good marketing.

Is my time wasted?  Yes...and no.  I guess being helpful is also an investment in me, in my values, in what makes me feel worthwhile.  If you are helping someone, it is very hard to see that as wasted time.

On the other hand, if we never help anyone, we'll end up being pretty self-centered people - the kind of people we would not want for friends.

Do you help people too much or too little?  No lecture here, just my perspective and a suggestion to examine how you handle this issue.  I would welcome any feedback you might have from your experience.

Yay!  We are #1 again at the Big G for "happiness", but we are still at #2 for "find happiness".  This is puzzling, but welcome, news.  And we retain "authority" status for "How to be happy".  We are at #4 for "Happy", a term I really never worked on, but there is always a first for everything, so here goes: happy.

Yeehaw!  The travel directory is now live on the home page, too.  It is ready for everyone to submit their travel web site URL for free.  We have a few innitial postings, like at the maps category and the vacation homes category and the property sales category.

This will be most useful to help with promoting some clients, but in the long run the plan is to monetize and make it a par tof the overall business plan.

Saturday, October 21, 2006
So the Travel and Vacations Directory if finally live, although there are a number of things to test and to set straight (like connecting it to the home page).  But I'll take care of those over the next few days, and we'll be ready to submit URLs soon.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.  That was early for the first snowfall, and the snow is still on the ground.  We went for a flashlight-lit walk in the snow last night.

Well, well.  I think this is the Daily Dose that got me the most reaction in a long time...all positive:

CONFIDENCE

"I think I can."

Those are four of the best known words from any children's book, in this case from The Little Engine That Could.  They are also some of the most powerful words form literature, words that adults would do well to commit to memory.  No, wait.  Memory is something from the past, something we recall as if from a movie we saw once upon a time.

"I think I can" should be committed to action.  When faced with a challenge, I think I can.

When faced with doubters or with doubt, I think I can.

When faced with indecision, I think I can.

When faced with a loss, I think I can.

Guess what?  I think YOU can, too.
