Sassanak Lassies

SCOTTISH

The Sassanak Lassies ain't Scottish. In fact the word "sassanak" (a non-Scottish person) is the Scotch equivalent to "gringo." So those in plaid must be mighty green when they hear this duo. Fiddler Lynn Rubier-Capron and guitarist Toni Elderkin play light-hearted, lilting Scottish melodies with a little added goose only a sassanak could give. The song titles on the group's debut disc, Fast & Dirty, like "NielGow's Lament For The Death Of His Second Wife" or "Farewell To Whiskey" might lay out a storyline, but the music is beautiful and strong enough to withstand the application of the listener's own dreams and scenarios --- drunk, happy, or sad as they may be. Frankly, this band's music makes me very happy.

Sassanak Lassies play Sunday, November 12, at Chili Presbyterian Church, 3600 Chili Avenue, 889-9896, 3:30 p.m., free

Two "never before" things in this blog, the first is blogging.  The second is, Toni and I are getting ready to play our first gig w/ CD's to sell.

After making this CD, I'm looking for new Scottish fiddle tunes, mostly reels and some marches, to learn by ear.  It seems when ever I get to go to a jam (of which there are no Scottish jams here in Rochester), people mostly play reels.  So, I'm looking for good ones that lots of Scottish fiddlers know and love to play at jams.  If you have a favorite or two, could you send me the name and maybe who plays it on which CD?

Also, does anyone know of a good CD w/ pipers playing Scottish marches?
