For 10 1/2 years she was part of our life. I remember when we went to pick her up...she had this little red bandana around her neck. She was the cutest thing we've ever seen - an all white bull terrier with one black patch over her left eye. Oh my God, she was perfect. We took her to work with us that 1st night because we didn't want to leave her alone.
It took us a while to figure out she was deaf, we figured she was just stubborn. It didn't matter to us. She was our baby. We took her everywhere. We took her to every dog park in Manhattan & Brooklyn; every beach we could take her to; she even went to Andrew's grandmother's 75th birthday in Florida.
That 1st year was pretty tough, I think she bit everyone we knew (LOL). We tried 5 different trainers, schools, diets, everything.
Everyone had a different theory. Actually it was pretty simple..she was deaf. She startled incredibly easy.
She was a deaf, ADD'd, tail chasing, spinning, absolutely nuts bull terrier and we loved her so. When we brought our 2nd doggie home, she was so Loving and when we brought our 3rd home she just became the mother of the den. When our son was born and he came home, she was so gentle and loving. The other 2 doggies were a little jealous at first, not Lola.
Again, she took the mother role. As he got a little older she let him do anything to her, and I mean anything...
10 1/2 years is a long time but now it feels way too short. She struggled so much her last year. She stuck around for as long as she did for us - all of us.
"Sleep with the angels" my darling. Sleep...

Sometimes I love getting up at 6am with my son. It's so beautiful out. I especially like the quiet. I did say "sometimes" - right? I do function on very little sleep, especially these days. Been struggling with our sick dog, Lola. She's been suffering with IBD for almost a year now. It has consumed her. The disease does not allow her to eat - she gets violently ill from almost everything. When we finally find something that she will eat and doesn't make her sick, her disease doesn't allow her to absorb any nutrients. It is so frustrating. We've tried everything - fresh duck, salmon, sirloin steak, lamb, pasta, rice, oatmeal, I can go on. Our little girl is very sick now. It's so hard to let her girl. I have never been an advocate of euthinizing. I always say we don't just put people to "sleep", why should we do it to our animals? But I think I understand it now. It's getting pretty close. We don't want her to continue to suffer. How does one make that decision? When does one make that decision? We are looking for Lola to tell us. Our beautiful, sweet, sweet Lola. How do we say "goodbye"?

Think Pink: Download for a Cause!
April 22, 2009 by James Hipps
During the entire month of April, OUT rocker Ariel Aparicio’s song “Pretty In Pink” will serve as encouragement for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. From April 1st-30th, Ariel will donate his proceeds of $.54 cents from each iTunes sale of his take on the Psychedelic Furs’ 1980s classic to the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure ®.
This campaign was inspired by Celeste Orangers- Ariel’s extremely close friend of over 20 years (they met the very first day Ariel checked into NYU’s Weinstein dorm) who was diagnosed in May 2005 with stage III breast cancer, and today can call herself a survivor. While recording his uplifting, violin-laden version of the song, Ariel decided he wanted to utilize the track as a vehicle for spreading optimism and hope amongst women battling the disease. By partnering with omen Greater NYC, Ariel was able to utilize the song as a tool to raise money to be put towards the advancement of breast cancer research, education, creening and treatment to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease.
Celeste Orangers’ treatment included chemotherapy, mastectomy, radiation, and what was then a brand new gene therapy- an IV drug treatment called Herceptin. In April 2005, Herceptin was just approved as a wonder drug in treating breast cancer, and Celeste was one of her doctor’s first patients to receive it. “I believe I am here today because of that new protocol. Without the fundraising done by organizations like Susan G. Komen For The Cure ®, Herceptin would have been many years off, and I probably would not be here,” says Orangers.
Richard Butler (lead singer of The Furs), heard Ariel’s cover and reached out to say- “I loved the version… well done!” “Pretty In Pink” just hit #4 on MTV Logo’s “The Click List” for the second week in a row and with continued fan support is on the rise to the top. Ariel’s previous single, “Life and Times” held the #1 position for 5 weeks in a row. While “Pretty In Pink” was released as a digital single only, Ariel released a full-length album, All These Brilliant Things in the Fall of 2008. The album received praise from the likes of The Deli Magazine, Skope Magazine, Out Impact, Gay Agenda, New England Blade and After Elton. Ariel’s sound and musical style has been compared to David Bowie, The Stooges and The Strokes. His next live performance is set for Friday, April 24th at 8:00pm at Public Assembly in Williamsburg,Brooklyn.
The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded in 1990 and has raised over $45 million to date. The organization is devoted to its local community, disbursing up to 75 percent of net income to local breast health programs in the five boroughs of New York City, on Long Island and in Westchester and Rockland Countie. In 2008, Komen Greater NYC awarded close to $3.2 million in grants — $2.3 million will support 38 community-based organizations that provide breast health programs to underserved women, $225,000 will increase capacity of local researchers to enroll women in breast cancer trials, $45,000 will help fund local breast cancer conference and education programs, and $1.3 million will go for research. Interview: Ariel Aparicio Is Thinking "Pink"
Out
pop-rocker Ariel Aparicio lives in Brooklyn, is a dad, a restaurant co-owner
and spends his free-time hanging out around the top of Logo’s Click List music
video show, where his fans consistently chime in and score him high ratings on
a weekly basis.
Aparicio’s
current hit is the 80s classic “Pretty in Pink,” made famous by the Pyschedelic
Furs and by that little Molly Ringwald film of the same name. And keeping in
the pink theme, Aparicio is donating all proceeds from the iTunes sales of
“Pretty In Pink” to the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For
The Cure, which combats breast cancer. Nice, right?
He’s
got a show in Brooklyn this Friday, but expect more to come! But we’ll let him
talk for a bit, now...
Why the tune "Pretty in Pink?" Are you a huge Molly Ringwald
or Psychedelic Furs fan? Or do you just look good in rosey hues?
I’m
a HUGE Furs fan. I love the band and especially LOVE Richard Butler. In college,
I had a t-shirt printed that read "Richard Butler is GOD." But I do
look especially stunning in pink.
Why did you decide to donate proceeds from the single's sale to the
Susan G. Komen For the Cure organization? Is there a personal story behind it?
My
dear friend of 20 years, Celeste Orangers, was diagnosed with stage III breast
cancer in 2005. She is AMAZING. Today she is a SURVIVOR and I wanted to
contribute to one of the organizations she feels strongly about. Actually, part
of her treatment include an experimental drug called Herceptin, which she
herself says that " without the fundraising of organizations like Susan G.
Komen For The Cure, Herceptin would have been many years off, and I probably
would not be here."
How does living in Brooklyn influence your work? Or does it?
Brooklyn
brings me peace. Brooklyn also ROCKS!! It totally outshines Manhattan now for
music & art. I love being a part of this community. Yes, Brooklyn inspires
me everyday when I look out my window.
How do you juggle being a full-time musician and helping your partner
run your restaurant -- and being a parent? It sounds insanely exhausting!
I
just nodded off answering these questions... Actually, my husband is a saint.
He lets me skip out to rehearsals and gigs and recordings whenever I need to
and he runs the show by himself but it's me waking up in the middle of the
night most of the times, so we are even!!!
What's the best compliment you've gotten about your music? From whom?
Why was it important?
Well,
this one is pretty easy ... Richard Butler, "God" himself, LOVED my
cover of "Pretty in Pink". I mean, to have one of your biggest
influences compliment you on YOUR cover of HIS song... well, that's better than
ecstasy.
What are your summer plans, musically? Where can we see you?
PRIDE
TOUR!!!!! We've confirmed a handful of shows already. I'll post all the shows
on my website (www.arielaparicio.com) really soon. Also, working my way back
into the studio. Have a bunch of new songs. Can't wait to record them. I'm
really going for the retro 80's sound this time. Hey, is Todd Rundgren
available to produce? Can someone give him a call? Oh, my husband and I and our
son will be in Cancun in July. Hold my calls.

Well, it's been a while. Maybe I'll just put a lot less thought into these. After all, no one really reads this?? Right? That's right, I am looking for an answer here."Hello, anybody out there?" If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is.... Ahh, fuck it!!

Oh, its a " gay"Oh, these are 2 people committing to each other in the presence of God and their family - but they are gay
Oh, I get it
They don't deserve the same right to commit to each other publicly or the same rights and protections under the law that 2 people of the opposite sex do
Oh, I get it
There relationship shouldn't be valued the same as 2 people of the opposite sex
Oh, I get it
There family shouldn't be valued the same as "our family"
Oh, I get it
Actually, I don't get it. I don't get it at all
Some things are better left unasked

Brilliant Things are Happening to ARIEL APARICIO
by JC Alvarez, Exclusively for AMBIENTE
ARIEL APARICIO is a new kind of emerging artist...Ariel is one of a thriving breed here in New York City, the underground vocalist that is making waves on the nightclub music circuit. Traversing the alternative music scene that was once dominated by the likes of more familiar names like Blondie and Oingo Boingo; characters that frequented haunts like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City and opened up for Patty Smith or The Pretenders. If these names are unfamiliar to you, imagine the audiences that Ariel is drawing into these crowded, sometimes subdued and often times impossible to locate venues...these kids who are feasting on his sound weren't even around to familiarize themselves with the likes of those legends!Thank God they've got Ariel around to give them a taste of what it was once like.
On the heels of the release of his latest album project ALL THESE BRILLIANT THINGS Aparacio hopes to reinvigorate the NYC club scene -- but not the one that you’re probably thinking needs his help. We might often associate the “club scene” of interest to a gay artist the hot, hard-thumping kind, filled with shirtless, sweaty bodies and gyrating hips. Aparacio is setting his sights on a much more ambitious (if much more fickle) audience. He’s interested in focusing his attention to what some may consider a dying art in the urban jungle. New York City was considered the music epicenter for a very longtime, giving birth to American punk rock and some would even argue was the genesis for rap and hip-hop. All those emerging artist came out from the underground punk scene that seemed to have died with the advent of pop -- after all video killed the radio star so what chance was there for something so obscure as punk.
Ariel isn't particularly defined or limited by what’s currently popular. His music is inspired and dictated by a higher order -- it’s generated by pure adrenaline and is kinetic in the same way that made David Bowie a presence on the stage and a voice that swirled around you and transported you beyond the limits of your 9 foot long headphone cord. When Ariel Aparicio lets loose with the primal force inside his soul, sharing his music, it sears you to the core and cauterizes you with his guitar licks. His audience is held hostage by the glamour in his movement, the roll of his thighs as they wrap around a mic stand and his swagger of the stage -- his lyrics ring true with the studied substance of an artist aware of where he’s standing and especially where he’s been and anxious about where he’s going.
All these brilliant things are apparent. “I was 3 when my family came to the States. It was pretty wonderful growing up exposed to both cultures. I'm sure it must have been quite challenging for my parents but for us, the children, we knew no different. Plus, we were in Miami so it was almost like being in Cuba.” Ariel immigrated from Cuba to the States and as a youth grew up listening to the music that most of us who are Latino couldn’t escape no matter how hard we tried! “We grew up surrounded by music, so it was such a part of our lives. My mother was singing all the time. Either at home while doing the dishes or at any of the many house parties that would occur several times a week complete with a salsa band.”.
We can all relate to this story, but Ariel who always wanted to be a singer, has turned his inspired dreams into a hard-core reality.
JC - I love your rock sound and feel, especially on All These Brilliant Things. It reminds me of several rock genres – there’s a very 60’s hippie-like revolutionary vibe to these tracks. What were some of the inspiration behind the songs?
Ariel Aparicio - The core of the inspiration for the sound and feel of this record, is more early 70's. I used as my template 2 very important records for me - DavidBowie's DIAMOND DOGS and Iggy.
Pop's RAW POWER. I wanted to combine the pop brilliance of the former and the punk rawness of the latter. I do like that you got this 60's "hippie vibe", as you said, though. I definitely love that period too. If you heard that...fantastic!
JC - Yes...that they influenced you is wonderfully obvious! It’s great how you channel from everyone like Iggy Pop to Robert Plant. Why these musical role models?
AA - I am a big fan of music. There are many, manyinfluences, but when you say "role models" there are 3 very specificpeople - Bowie, Richard Butler from The Psychedelic Furs and Chrissie Hynde. Ms. Hynde has probably had the biggest impact on my artistry and musicianship. I really do want to be her!!! Way, too cool. Yeah, Pop and Plant are there too.
JC - In this day and age of overly processed studio sounds in pop and even hip-hop – does punk and rock have a solid footing still on the musical spectrum?
AA - Yeah, I think so. There will always be guitars and people who want to play them. So therefore, there will always be rock and punk and different variations of that.
JC - How did your Latino culture influence you as an artist? As an individual?
AA - My Latino culture is part of who I am and I think music is a big part of our culture, so it remains and has always been, a big part of my life. You know, the first concerts I saw were some of the Giants of Latin music...El Gran Combo, Tito Puento and the queen herself, Celia Cruz. Wow, what a superstar. She was bigger than life on stage and always the utmost professional. Before I wanted to be Chrissie Hynde, I wanted to be Celia Cruz.
JC - There’s nothing like performing live in front of you audience – is that where your music mostly comes to life? Do you prefer the live forum to the studio experience? AA - Yes...I prefer the stage. The studio - not so much. When I'm there I just want it to be over as soon as possible!I do love the songwriting process, though. Especially with my band. I love bringing a song to them and watch it develop and take a life of it's own. I think that's really my favorite part.
JC - I’d love to here you do a duet with Christina Aguilera or even Justin Timberlake. Who would be your dream collaboration with?
AA - Well of course there is the obvious...Chrissie Hynde. How many times have a mentioned her name in this interview already? Actually, we do this awesome version of “American Life” -- I would love for Madonna to do it with me! That's an open invitation to Her Madgesty!
JC - From Havana, to Little Havana...now you've landed yourself in Brooklyn! Of all the NYC boroughs everyone associates Brooklyn with arts and culture and certainly pride. What is it about the borough that sets it apart?
AA - All the lesbians...I'm in Park Slope! Actually...look around! The best bands around today are from Brooklyn...plus the best Thai food in the world - JOYA and SONG - both restaurants owned and run by me and my partner!!
JC - What else is it that keeps you so busy?
AA - Facebook!
JC - (LOL) OK...that’s not what I’m referring to, but I’ll go with it! Among perhaps your greatest achievement is that you recently became a father. How has fatherhood changed your perspective musically and personally? Your little one must give you all sorts of new inspiration.
AA - By far the thing I'm most proud of in this world!!! Being a parent just puts everything in perspective. That extra day of rehearsal isn't really that important. Changing the "specials" at the restaurant isn't really that important. Sleep isn't really that important. Yes, he inspires everything I do now.
JC - You’re latest singles are “Pretty in Pink” and “I’m the One”. “I’m the One” is so powerful! It’s very timely and encapsulates the times we’re living. Is it also perhaps a Valentine’s to fatherhood?
AA - Sure, why not. A Valentine to Fatherhood!!!! And so very fitting! In an era where we've embraced and encouraged change, Ariel Aparicio takes the time to pay homage to a musical movement that undoubtedly still thrives in the heart of the city, for it has beat in the soul of a Cuban immigrant who danced to Celia, bopped to “Holiday” and at the end of the day finds solace in the embrace of a family that he’s made his own. For generations to come Ariel Aparicio will be the template of the new punk-rock legend and the sound that reinvigorated the underground club sound and he will be some new artist’s inspiration -- he may yet get his wish and one day be someone’s Chrissie Hynde.
You can check out Ariel Aparacio’s latest album ALL THESE BRILLIANT THINGS (including the new single “Pretty In Pink”) on iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby. When in New York City, check out the Thai restaurant experiences JOYA and SONG -- both are located in the borough of Brooklyn. So we went to apply for our marriage license last week. It was really simple. It took about 10 minutes. People were really nice. There were no lynchings, no one stormed the castle, no buildings were set on fire, there were no riots in the streets. Just 2 people raising their right hand, answering a few questions and signing an application. 2 people who have shared 15 years together, who have a kid together, who have 3 dogs together, who have a house together, who own 2 businesses together, who love each other, who support each other, who argue together, who fight together, who make up together, who go to sleep together, who wake up together - sound familiar? Sound like any other couple in America? So why does this couple have to cross state lines to be able to marry? Sounds like something a fugitive has to do. For now, we are grateful for the people of Connecticut. Thank you for recognizing that we are a couple like any other couple who just want to get married. Pretty simple. Pretty normal. What's all the fuss about?

I’ve just taken part in a PSA for OUTMusic (a network of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered musicians and supporters) to support and encourage gay artists to be "out”. I am very proud and honored to have been selected to participate in this initiative. Below is a description of the purpose of the PSA, that I hoped to share with you all.
"LGBT people have come a very long way in the fight for LGBT Civil Rights. Many have lived and died for us to have the opportunity to even produce a campaign that speaks to the silent discrimination that goes on in the entertainment industry. We even have an internalized battle on our hands when it comes to LGBT Executives in the industry who play into the stigma which feeds ignorance and prejudice.
With this campaign I know we will make a positive impact by raising awareness and starting this conversation. This is a very good time for us in the political sense of the word because our equal rights and fair treatment under the law is at the forefront. Who better to speak out on discrimination and prejudice than openly LGBT Recording Artists and Performers.
I have till yet to hear a song written and sung by a man about a man on the radio waves or vice versa. We deserve to be seen and heard and should not have to sing something in the middle of the road so our EXPRESSION can be accepted. We should not be pushed into the "inappropriate box" or "parental discretion box" because of the Gay Content.... I'm preaching to the choir Ha haaa LOL!!! ;o) Here's to those that have come before us....Now it's our time to do our part."
