The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today bolstered its middleweight division by signing high-profile 185-pound standout Denis Kang to a four-fight contract to compete inside the Octagon.

Here's a snip from the official announcement:

"Denis will now be able to showcase his skills to a whole new audience who hasn't had the chance to see this exciting fighter in action. Denis has always expressed a desire to fight in the UFC and we are pleased we were able to help him get this deal done. Denis will bring a lot of excitement to the 185-pound division! Congrats Denis!"

Kang — who has enjoyed success primarily in Japan and Korea fighting in the PRIDE and Spirit MC organizations — is on a two-fight win streak after losing back-to-back matches. He most recently defeated Marvin Eastman via first round technical knockout at Raw Combat: "Redemption" last month.

The Canadian with South Korean roots was a participant in the Dream Middleweight Grand Prix 2008, losing to eventual tournament winner Gegard Mousasi via submission (triangle choke). He was an early favorite to win it all before getting upset by the slick Armenian.

Kang was also the runner-up at the PRIDE Welterweight Grand Prix 2006, losing to Kazuo Misaki via split decision.

No fight date or possible opponent for Kang is known at this time. However, expect to see him make his Octagon debut sometime in early 2009.

If he can get off to a good start don't be too surprised to see him fighting reigning division champion Anderson Silva sometime very soon … Kang has great mixed martial arts skills and would be a nice test for "The Spider."

This is great news — the promotion had been trying to wrangle the services of Kang for more than a year. Job well done.

Matt Brown will step up on short notice and replace the injured Matt Riddle against Ryan Thomas at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15, according to WrestlingObserver.com.

Riddle — The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 cast clown — reportedly suffered a serious knee injury while training for the welterweight bout and there is no timetable for his return to action at this time.

Brown also competed on TUF 7 before being eliminated from the show by eventual tournament winner Amir Sadollah via triangle choke in the semifinals. He bounced back to defeat Matt Arroyo via technical knockout at the TUF 7 Finale in June.

The taste of victory inside the Octagon, however, did not last long — Brown dropped a close split decision to undefeated Korean import, Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6,

It marked his fourth loss in his six most recent fights.

Thomas is no stranger to last minute opponent switches — he stepped up on short notice (12 days) to replace an injured Jared Rollins at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" in August to fight Ben Saunders.

He lost that fight via second round submission (armbar), spoiling his debut for the promotion.

Thomas is a 23-year-old part-time student at Eastern Illinois University who, prior to taking the Saunders fight, fought 14 times in 20 months.

Karo Parisyan is penciled in to collide with Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim (11-0-1) in a welterweight tilt at UFC 94, which is scheduled for the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Parisyan — who just signed a new eight-fight contract extension with the promotion — is currently recovering from an injury that forced him to withdraw from a fight against Yoshiyuki "Zenko" Yoshida at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" in September literally hours before showtime.

It was an unfortunate situation that was made more curious with his recent admission the he has been dealing with panic attacks — numerous fans claimed "The Heat" merely had a case of cold feet.

Regardless, the Armenian was stopped by rising star Thiago "Pitbull" Alves in the second round because of strikes in his most recent performance at UFC Fight Night 13. The typically gracious Parisyan was uncharacteristically sour on the stoppage, claiming that referee Steve Mazzagatti was premature in his decision to halt the bout.

While Parisyan may have suffered another setback in his quest for the welterweight championship, he is still a dangerous opponent, going 8-2 since being outpointed by current 170-pound champ Georges "Rush" St. Pierre back in 2004.

However, a loss against Kim could be catastrophic for the UFC career of Parisyan, who UFC President Dana White recently referred to as "a gatekeeper."

"Stun Gun" was actually the beneficiary of Parisyan's UFC 88 debacle, having his Octagon encore against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum Matt Brown bumped to the televised portion of the pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast. The popular South Korean earned a close split decision win against "Immortal."

Kim stopped Jason Tan in his inaugural appearance for the promotion at UFC 84: "Ill Will" back in May, pounding out his opponent with elbows in the final frame. The promising DEEP veteran will look to keep his perfect record intact and climb the welterweight ladder one rung at a time.

In fact, he leapfrog a few folks with an impressive win over an opponent like Parisyan.

UFC 94 will feature the welterweight superfight between former 170-pound champion and current lightweight kingpin BJ Penn versus reigning welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, as well as the highly anticipated showdown between light heavyweight unbeatens Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva.

Solid ratings on network television were not enough to overcome an almost $60 million deficit for Pro Elite, the parent company of Elite XC and several other promotions.

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm an SI.com report that the relatively young mixed martial arts promotion is no more.

Little more than two weeks after its biggest star, Kimbo Slice, lost in just 14 seconds to replacement journeyman Seth Petruzelli in front of 4.5 million people on CBS, Elite XC has apparently been hit with a knockout blow of its own.

That's not to say the two had anything to do with one another. It's perhaps just an unfortunate coincidence. Regardless, there is no more Elite XC, including the November 8 "A Night of Champions" event that was looking like a great card.

One year, 10 months and six days … Elite XC was established on December 14, 2006, and pronounced dead on October 20, 2008.

The company dug a deep $60 million hole of which it was never able to climb out. Obviously, no money — investors who were supposed to keep the company alive at least until the end of the year never materialized — equals no events, especially when there's not even a pay-per-view (PPV) deal to fall back on.

If nothing else, Elite XC can hang its hat on staging the first-ever live mixed martial arts event on network television … and the second, and the third. Not to mention the first female fight on network television … and the second, and the third.

Elite XC is also responsible for some of the best fights of the past year or so. Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith I and Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le are just two examples of those. Not to mention quality performances from Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Antonio Silva, Rafael Feijao, and plenty of other world class caliber fighters.

They gave it a good shot.

In the end, it's just tough for a new promotion to come in and be successful in mixed martial arts. Even the UFC, which is now very profitable, lost tons of money when the Fertittas first bought it — company president Dana White often remarks that he and his high school buddies make it look easy.

It seems he's right once again; however, that's obviously a different story, and outcome, but you get the point.

The plan was probably more or less to gain popularity with the CBS deal and grow into a PPV juggernaut like the UFC. But that was obviously a little overzealous. The truth is that the UFC has a stranglehold on all the PPV buyers, and it's not going to be easy for any other company to be successful.

Just ask Affliction.

The upside to this for the fans is that there's going to be a bunch of great fighters now without a place to work. It's going to be interesting to see how many of these guys (and gals) end up in the UFC, Strikeforce, WEC, Affliction, or any of the other organizations out there.

Expect to see these guys beefing up their rosters with names like Jake Shields, Eddie Alvarez, Nick Diaz, Antonio Silva, Rafael Feijao, Paul Daley, KJ Noons, Wilson Reis, Cyrille Diabate, and countless others.

Who knows … maybe even Kimbo Slice.

In the end, the talent was there near the top … it just wasn't enough to compensate for all the other shortcomings and struggles that upstart mixed martial arts promotions face attempting to get off the ground.

Elite XC joins Pride FC, International Fight League (IFL) and World Fighting Alliance (WFA) as recent MMA organizations that were forced to fold. Hopefully, the list ends there.

Michael Bisping Interview
Win or lose tomorrow night against Chris Leben at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben," Michael Bisping will be asked to serve as a coach on the next and ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) mixed martial arts reality series that airs on Spike TV.

UFC President Dana White today confirmed the long-rumored appointment at the UFC Fight Club question and answer session at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, according to Fighters Only Magazine.

White is in town, obviously, hosting the 11-fight card that is scheduled for Saturday, October 18 that features a main event between "The Count" and "The Crippler."

Bisping — TUF 3 winner and current British UFC posterboy — is a clear choice for the position, considering TUF 9 will be themed, "U.S. vs. U.K." White did not confirm the opposing coach, however, he did indicate that Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson are both under consideration.

Perhaps that decision will be made a little easier when "Ace" and "Hollywood" clash in the main event at UFC 93: "Dublin" on January 17.

Time will tell.

TUF 9 will feature a mix of middleweight and welterweight hopefuls who will compete for "six figure" UFC contracts in a tournament-style format. Tryouts are already scheduled for Chicago and London this month to select a 32-member cast, which will eventually be whittled down to 16 in the first few days of taping.

The production schedule has not been revealed at this time; however, if the promotion decides to wait for either Franklin and Henderson then it could be pushed back until January 2009.

kos alves
Josh Koscheck will replace an injured Diego Sanchez to fight Thiago Alves on less than two weeks notice at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25.

"The Nightmare" had to withdraw from the highly anticipated welterweight showdown because of torn rib cartilage sustained during training the promotion just announced.

Koscheck — who is still scheduled to fight Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" on December 10 — has won nine of 11 bouts inside the Octagon since his stint on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) back in early 2005, transforming from a world class wrestler into a dangerous well-rounded fighter in less than three years.

He has faced top competition in the loaded division in his last five appearances, including a showdown with current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (he was not champion at the time). He lost that bout via three-round decision but won over a legion of new fans with the performance for being able to hang with the uber talented Canadian.

Koscheck has since defeated rising star Dustin Hazelett with a second round technical knockout at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" back in March and grizzled veteran Chris Lytle via bloodbath, er, unanimous decision at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" this past July.

With a win over Yoshida, the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout would have been knocking on the door for a title shot along with the winner of the previously scheduled bout between Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves.

Well, opportunity knocked sooner rather than later and "Kos" has answered the call to fight "The Pitbull" to possibly determine the next 170-pound title challenger. In fact, we're told that if "Kos" can defeat Alves and then beat Yoshida he is guaranteed the winner of the fight between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn sometime in early 2009.

Alves is fresh of ridiculous performance against Matt Hughes, taking out the former champion in the second round of their main event tilt at UFC 85: "Bedlam" just last month. Prior to that, "The Pitbull" wiped out another perennial powerhouse, Karo Parisyan, at UFC Fight Night 13.

The 24-year-old Brazilian was already on the fast track to an eventual title shot. And a win over Koscheck would certainly put him over the top.

This is a fine replacement for a co-main event to go along with the middleweight showdown between 185-pound champion Anderson Silva and challenger Patrick Cote.

Hard-hitting Drew McFedries (7-4) has answered the call to fill-in for the injured Goran Reljic and fight Thales Leites (13-1) at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25.

We passed along news just yesterday that 24-year-old undefeated Croatian fighter sustained a back injury while training for the upcoming 185-pound fight, forcing him out of the bout with less than two weeks until showtime.

Enter "Massacre."

McFedries has had a rollercoaster career inside the Octagon, winning every other fight and being unable to string together consecutive wins in six attempts with the promotion.

He most recently lost to Mike Massenzio via submission (kimura) at UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Neb., on September 17, meaning the Miletich product will compete twice in little more than one month. If his pattern is any historical indicator, however, then McFedries is poised for a win.

But McFedries will need more than that to defeat the crafty Brazilian.

Fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Leites has rattled of four straight wins inside that Octagon. And that includes a controversial split decision win of perennial contender, Nathan Marquardt, at UFC 85: "Bedlam" back in June.

His only career loss is to Martin Kampmann in his promotional debut back in 2006.

Leites was supposed to take on Dean Lister at UFC Fight Night 15. However, the "Boogeyman" sustained an injury during training and was scratched from the showdown, making McFedries the third opponent for which Leites has had to prepare in just about as many months.

Over the weekend, the televised line up for the UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" pay-per-view (PPV) event came into focus when several previously reported bouts slated for the 10-fight card were made official.

The promotion is already billing its main event between heavyweight champion Randy Couture and WWE professional wrestling sensation-turned mixed martial artist, Brock Lesnar, as "The Biggest Fight in UFC History."

In addition, UFC officials have high expectations for tickets sales, as well as attendance figures at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15.

Here's how the UFC 91 card appears today:

Main event:

265 lbs.: UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture (16-8) vs. Brock Lesnar (2-1)

Main card (Televised):

155 lbs.: Kenny Florian (10-3) vs. Joe Stevenson (29-8)
185 lbs.: Amir Sadollah (1-0) vs. Nick Catone (5-0)
265 lbs.: Gabriel Gonzaga (9-3) vs. Josh Hendricks (14-4)
185 lbs.: Demian Maia (8-0) vs. Nate Quarry (10-2)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

170 lbs.: Dustin Hazelett (11-4) vs. Tamdan McCrory (9–1)
155 lbs.: Jorge Gurgel (12-4) vs. Aaron Riley (26-10-1)
155 lbs.: Jeremy Stephens (13-3) vs. Rafael dos Anjos (11-2)
155 lbs.: Alvin Robinson (9–3) vs. Mark Bocek Record (5-2)
185 lbs.: Matt Riddle (1-0) vs. Ryan Thomas (9-2)

With little more than a month until showtime, it's unlikely that another marquee bout will be added to the card. That means that the lightweight showdown between top contenders Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson will perhaps serve as the co-featured bout of the evening.

Shamrock vs Shamrock

Adopted and quasi-estranged brothers Frank and Ken Shamrock have apparently signed a contract to meet inside the cage once and for all sometime in 2009, according to a recent ESPN.com article.

The brothers have had somewhat of a behind the scenes feud going on for years. And a fight between the two has been talked about for a while and now … so take this latest announcement with a grain of salt.

Frank is a master promoter, which means that he could be using all the high profile attention Ken received for not fighting Kimbo Slice at Elite XC: "Heat" on October 4. In the past, he's referred to fighting his brother as, "the biggest fight in mixed martial arts history."

Here is his most recent take on the match up:

"We've both signed a contract to fight each other. Ken is down with it. We talked about it two years ago, and we've agreed materially to fight. The fight has a cool hook, brothers beating each other up. Everyone wants to see that."

Frank has not competed since losing his Strikeforce middleweight title to Cung Le earlier this year. He could not answer the bell for the fourth round in a thrilling affair because his forearm was shattered during the fight.

He is also on the CBS "Saturday Night Fights" television announcer crew. And when Ken pulled out of the Slice fight because of a cut sustained hours for the bout, Frank — who has not been training for a fight and competes at 185 pounds — volunteered to fight the much larger Slice on two hours notice.

However, CBS executives reportedly nixed the idea and opted to go with Seth Petruzelli instead. The rest, as "they" say is history.

So since that horse left the barn, Frank switched public relations gears and now apparently is already beating his drum for a showdown with his 44-year old brother. For his part, Ken is equally game.

Here's a snip from him:

"Will the fight happen? Absolutely. He's got a buttkicking coming to him. Everything I've learned, everything I have bottled up in me, is going to come out on him. I've still got love for Frank, but I'm angry at him. He feels he's better than me, but I always spanked him in the gym. Now he wants to show me. I figured he'd wait until I was 50 years old, but I guess he's waiting until I turn 45."

Ken is a mixed martial arts pioneer who has not won a professional fight in more than four years. In fact, he has lost eight of his last 10 fights dating back to 2001 and he's on a five-fight losing skid.

A UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Ken dropped his first and most recent bout under the ProElite banner, losing to Robert "Buzz" Berry via first knockout at Cage Rage 25: "Bring it On" earlier this year.

That, too, was supposed to be a warm-up for the "World's Most Dangerous Man" to groom him for a big money match down the road against either Slice, or his younger brother, Frank.

He didn't deliver … and he rarely does these days.

But that may not matter Elite XC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen appears warm to the idea.

Here's what he had to say:

"They're talking about doing it and we're interested in the fight. It's a storyline everyone can relate to, Cain versus Abel."

It's interesting that Elite XC is open to working with Ken after everything that happened as a result of him being scratched from the Slice fight.

He put them in a terrible spot. And then everything that has transpired since that night, including allegations of fight influencing, put the already struggling promotion in a much deeper whole of which to climb out.

Furthermore, is this really a fight that fight fans want to see or is it a fight that Frank and Ken think the fans want to see? Let is know what you think in the comments section below.
