MALICIOUS DAMAGE
Hello all, this is Angel Merciless. Today we have with us in the studio Tony and Josh from Malicious Damage.
1.What's the name of your band? Have you changed the band's name before? TONY: The band is called Malicious Damage. We've had that name since day one.
2. Please list the name, and respective instrument of each band member.
TONY: Well, im the guitarist. Josh is our vocalist. Dave pounds away on the drums and Patrick slams away on the bass. we've all been to the same school, the school of Hard Knocks.
3. What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
JOSH: Malicious Damage is about the perfect combination of old school speed/thrash/death metal with some hardcore flavor. TONY: Yea, I think you hit the nail on the head with that one.
4. How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
JOSH: Tony and I met in a previous band we were in at the time. That was back in 2002 TONY: That sounds about right. Dave I met around 1990. Malicious Damage was looking for a drummer at the time and Dave fit right in. Patrick just recently jumped aboard after we were introduced to him through mutual friends.
5. Hey Tony, When did you form Malicious Damage?
TONY: Malicious Damage started in 1987 and lasted until 1991. Between that time we had a few releases and a few of our songs were featured on various compilations. I guess we were young, dumb and violent all at once. By the end of '91 we really felt like we were torn up and beaten down mentally. We eventually disbanded by the end of that year due to personal conflicts. Although all of our hearts were still beating to the sound, there was way too much turmoil deep inside. All I really remember about those times is not really getting very much sleep. I guess the band had to disintegrate in order for the healing process to begin. Now, some 15 years later life has dealt Malicious Damage a new hand. It's got to be because of the times we live in. How long can we last this time around? We'll find out. We have left the miserable times behind us. I personally need the strength to walk the other way. I found conviction in my ever-changing mind to make it work this time around. I don't want another tragic end. I've realized that the first time around Malicious Damage was a victim of its own devices. But why bring it all back you ask? Because I've always felt Malicious Damage was irrationally cut short and that, it had a lot more to give musically.
6. Do you have a record label?
TONY: well, actually Malicious Damage, this time around, is incorporated and we are our own label. We wanted to do things the right way. We wanted to be able to rely on our own and not some record company. Josh: right now were working on getting more promotional/distribution support. That's probably the hardest thing for any band that wants to record and release their music.
7. What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with what ever is available?)
TONY: As far as guitars go i do have quite an assortment. I like to play whatever feels right. As far as loyalty goes I've always stuck with the Gibson or B.C. Rich/Marshall combination. There's something about that combination of guitar and amp that I've always loved.
5. How about your favorite song to play? TONY: That would have to be "Global Enslavement" at the moment. The leads seem to really jump right out of the speakers at you!!!
6. If you could play a show with any band in the world who would you choose? TONY: (long pause) Hmmm, that's a really tough question...it would have to be Slayer.
7. Who have you been compared to? TONY: I guess growing up I've been compared alot to Kerry King. I guess, in the fact that we attack the guitar the same way. I would have to also guess we have the same tastes in music and influences.
8. Where would you like to play? TONY: Without a doubt!!!...Madison Square Garden!!!!!
9. Do you have any upcoming shows?
TONY: As of right now we're just about ready to release "Apostles Of The Apocalypse" so were trying to get that out to the people. As far as shows go we might have something lined up for the beginning of the year.
10. Do you ever play any covers?
TONY: When Malicious Damage first started out back in 1987 we used to do alot of covers. Mostly old Agnostic Front, D.R.I., Cro-Mags, Bad Brains.
11. Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
TONY: As far as the musical arrangements and chord progressions go that would be my job.
JOSH: I take care of all the lyrics and vocal duties. The subjects I wrote about on "Apostles Of The Apocalypse" all dealt with world / political issues. Unless the world changes i think I'll be writing for awhile.
12. You guys approach subject matter that no band has dared to touch. I thank you for having the balls to do so. Do you think that many bands don't because they are afraid of alienating their fans?
Tony: I think the main reason bands don't voice their opinions, as much as we do, is because most bands that are signed to a label don't have the freedom to do so, because of their record company. Their record company has the final word on what gets released to the public. We've always done things ourselves. We always have the final say in what gets released. I think there's alot of bands that have things to say its just that the corporate machine wont let them, in fear of losing sales.
13. Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
TONY: Well, its usually up to me to get the ball rolling as far as writing and structuring the outline for a Malicious Damage song. When i get that in rough form I present it to Josh. we then work it over until we get what we like. JOSH: yes, I think we work extremely well as a songwriting team.
14. How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
TONY: I would have to say when Malicious Damage first started out we were more or less a heavy punk/hardcore band. Over time we've tried to develope a little more depth and soul to our song writing.
15.What is your opinion on the abuse and the continuous destruction of the planet?
JOSH: abuse is definitely wrong. our planet is the only one we have..we screw that up we screw ourselves up..its as simple as that.
16. Whats the music scene like in Florida?
Tony: The south Florida scene has always had its ups and downs. Alot of good bands are running around down here as of lately. there's really only a couple good places to play, the rest are just holes in the wall. Most of the kids will only come out if a national act is playing, which is really sad.
17. What is your stance on the legalization of marijuana?
Tony: Legalize it and I will advertise it...it's that simple. California made the first step in the legalization for medicinal purposes. I was watching a program a while back where a group of people turned marijuana into Hempoline. They ran a car on the stuff. The wonders of marijuana still amaze me.
18. I got the pre-release of "Apostles of The Apocalypse", its brutal, who do you credit as major influences?
Tony: I don't think its about who we're influenced by as much as what we're influenced by. What we're influenced by is this world in which we're living in and all the things around us. This is the perfect time for Malicious Damage to be voicing it's opinion. If it were any nicer we wouldn't have anything to write about.
19. Do you have alot of Bush Supporters bitching at you over your material?
Tony: Bush is a freakin' idiot who has brought this country down. he could'nt even run a laudromat. Since he's been in office the price of gas has more than doubled!!! He's also brought this country to war, with no end in site!!! Last time Malicious Damage was around his father was in office. He's another meat-head. and as far as Bush's re-election, I've got three little words for you: it was rigged!!!
20. We call it freedom of speech and expression, yet others call us traitors because we speak out against the government. How do you feel about this subject?
Tony: Those who speak against the government obviously want something better. You still have to remember that this country and government was built "by the people, for the people".
21. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
TONY: I guess the biggest challenge is being on the same page with people, in a musical sense. I think we've overcome alot of things this time around to make Malicious Damage what it is today.
22. What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
JOSH: We hope to take our music and style to the next level. As far as fame and fortune goes who wouldn't want that. For me, I just want to play hard and have fun doing it.
TONY: I just want Malicious Damage, and its music, to live on long after I'm gone.
23. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
TONY: Find a bunch of people that enjoy the same music and ideas that you do and take it from there. Also, be prepared to see the ugly side of people.
JOSH: Be prepared for the long haul.
24. What do you listen to on a daily basis?
Tony: The voices in my head, and of course, my wife...hahahaha. Seriously though, i listen to a wide range of material. It really depends on what type of mood I'm in. If it has guitars or a string section in it i'll give it a spin.
25. How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
TONY: You can find our official website at www. maliciousdamage. net
JOSH: Anybody can also find us on myspace at www. myspace. com/maliciousdamage
26. Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
JOSH: All my family and friends.
TONY: My wife Patty. That woman is a Saint for putting up with me after all these years!!!.
Thank you for the interview guys, I totally loved meeting you and keep us updated with the haps with you guys! Kiss Patty for me and tell her good job baby! LOL

Here's an early copy of our review for "Apostles of the Apocalypse". Enjoy!
Malicious Damage - Apostles of the Apocalypse Independent - 2008
Allowing me a third crack at their wares, Malicious Damage comes back full fucking force with "Apostles of the Apocalypse". As always seen in previous albums, "Apostles of the Apocalypse" is saturated with free thinking propaganda, awesome cover art, heavy grooves and absolute brutality. What it is missing however is the manic fluctuations between genres. Malicious Damage proceeds with a straight forward heavy metal approach. If Pantera had a social conscience, they would of kicked as much ass as Malicious Damage. And if Malicious Damage would grind, they'd be Napalm Death. (Yep, they're that fucking good!) "Apostles..." is pretty much an ode to the American government and how it's leading the world down the shitter. (In fact, the beginning letter to each track spells out the word "government") Lyrically, "Apostles..." is written intelligently with obvious research going into each topic. Everything from mind control (R.F.I.D.), to Totalitarianism (Totalitarian) and everything in-between is covered. Musically, this album is about as solid as you can get. The driving beats go from start to finish with some of the catchiest guitar riffs around to accompany them. And of course, Josh is still here to lead the attack with his patented "fuck the lies" roar! Wrap it all up with a pretty bow and I call it Malicious Damage's best album to date! - :) CS E-MetalSpace

Malicious Damage - Sickness Amongst the Pure (review by HeavyCore founder Pete Altieri)
Malicious Damage does it again, but this time comes at you with both barrels blazing with the release of "Sickness Amongst the Pure". I put this CD in my computer and sat back in amazement of how the band improved in song writing, production, and just over all tightness. I was thrashing it out to the opening track, "Bear This Cross", when they tossed in an unexpected acoustic guitar piece with some cool dreamlike vocals, and then busted back into a rage-filled thrash attack! The production is really strong on this CD and the artwork they did for the cover is really wicked. The inside offers up lyrics to the songs, and they even mention us at Heavycore in the thanks. The musicianship is strong once again with these guys - I wish they would have included an updated bio with the CD because I'm not sure if they've had any lineup changes since the last CD I heard. The guitar work is really killer, with nice heavy tones for the rhythms, and when they bust into solos - it's nice and screaming like metal leads should be. They put in leads just at the right times, with some fine fretwork. The bass player is thundering along for sure, and keeps the band fixed firmly on the metal path, while the drummer really tears it up behind the kit. I dig his double bass work and the obvious fury he plays with to keep the band moving in the right direction. The vocals are killer, because he mixes things up nicely between the mid range rasp and some melodic singing. It's done well, and not the lame predictable stuff you hear a lot in the nu metal stuff. These guys are a thrash metal band with a touch of a hardcore edge to them. There's no nu-metal bullshit here!!!! I liked the entire 11 songs on this CD, but I would have to say my standout tracks were "An Easy Poison" and the opener "Bear This Cross" because it really took me by surprise with the sweet acoustic part tossed into the mayhem that is Malicious Damage. If you dig your metal hard and fast, with plenty of twists and turns to keep your interest, then you'll love "Sickness Amongst the Pure" - it fucking slays!!.
