Current mood:  hopeful
I went to drink from the river today
And their was only sand
Their river ran dry
Each day passes
My cotton mouth
Flushed…barriers
quench my thirst
But for a moment
cotton mouth
no taste could ever satisfy my thirst
nothing like the taste of
My land, language, culture, history, identity
Who I am
Is of the land
And of the land
Is who I am
Knowledge seeker
story keeper
Storyteller
Generation to generation
Past, present, future
All here in the now
Broken shackles
Free mind
Free spirit
Free you
Free me
The power for change resides in your power of choice
Will the river remain dry or will it rush again?

It is becoming more and more evident that for First Nations people to
be financially supported to attend post-secondary programs and
institutions via INAC programs may soon come to an END.

The
evidence is mounting. There are STRONG rumours that INAC is getting out
the “Post-Secondary business” and that this support will no longer be
managed by our communities via INAC programs, EFFECTIVE APRIL 2009.
What would this mean?

* Our people may have to apply for funding, much like non-native students apply for post-secondary loans and bursaries.

* Communities may not have the opportunity to get support to develop
local programs through the Indian Studies Support Program.
* First Nations Post-Secondary institutions may not receive funding to operate.

Following
these relentless INAC off-the record comments concerning the planned
transfer of the Post-Secondary Support Program (PSSSP) to a third
party, Kitigan Zibi and the FNEC have combined their effort to prepare
a petition for the future of Post-Secondary education.

The
objective is to obtain over 10 500 signatures across Canada, which
corresponds to the number of projected students that did not access to
Post-Secondary education funding support between 2001 and 2006, due to
a lack of funding.

Your collaboration is precious, that is why we invite you to sign the petition at http://www.cepn-fnec.com/index_e.as..px and to distribute the link to all your contacts.

Thank you for your precious collaboration,

Hey everyone!!
Hows it going?
I hope your all doing well:)

I just finished up an intensive week in Wemindji ( a northern Cree community in Quebec) I had the opportunity to work with a few of their youth this summer at the Power Camp National MAKE SOME NOISE camp in Whitehorse..and was pleasantly surprised and humbled when I was given an invite to come to their community. I honestly believe that it takes a whole community to raise a child, and believe that I have been able to DREAM BIG AND BELIEVE because I believe that I am a product of just that!
This past week was National Addiction Awareness Week, I went to all the grades from grade 5 to 13 (Its a Quebec thing hehe) talking to the youth about aboriginal spirituality, the importance of aboriginal identity and standing strong like two, also sharing some of the obstacles and triumphs which I have encountered in my 22 years on my journey. A lot of the kids didn't know why it was that their parents were abusing substances...they didn't understand what post traumatic stress syndrome is...and how the Residential school era had impacted their community in such a negative manor.(It's sad that ALOT of our communities believe that the medicine wheel and our traditional practices are the work of the devil, this is a reality for ALOT of the Residential School Survivors WHICH MUST CHANGE) The truth is this...yes the Residential Schools had a MASSIVE IMPACT on our traditional lifestyles and our practices BUT we are living proof of what it is that they COULD NOT TAKE FROM US!
WE ARE THE 7TH GENERATION AND WE WILL SUCCEED WITH THE RESTORATION OF OUR TRADITIONS...COMMUNITIES.......AND IDENTITIES.THE AWAKENING IS OCCURRING AND THE RAINBOW TRIBE IS UNITING! All of the children here speak their language which was very inspirational to see ESPECIALLY since I do not speak mine. It was soooo cute to see the little little kids talking Cree and has inspired me to want to take a more assertive stand on learning my languages when I go home.
We all have stories of substance abuse and suicides in our own communities...and it's kinda hard to miss considering that First Nations People have the highest statistics with regards to these topics. But The Awakening IS occurring...and it all starts with you and me. We must TRY to be the best role models for the children who look up to us. (THAT DOESNT MEAN BEATING OURSELVES UP IF WE FALL OFF...IT MEANS TAKING THE TIME TO LEARN THE LESSON AND GETTING BACK UP EVEN IF WE DO FALL...WE ARE ONLY HUMAN AND MUST REMEMBER THIS..THE IMPORTANT THING IS WE DO GET UP IF WE FALL AND NEVER ALLOW OTHERS TO KEEP US DOWN BY HOLDING THESE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES OVER OUR HEADS) When speaking with the youth a lot of them didn't really understand that all of the little little kids from the elementary school were looking up to them and it was very gratifying to see the light bulb go off when explained that they are indeed role models in their own community even if they recognize it or not.
AND THAT MEANS YOU TOO:)

We all have the power to create great change in our communities and within our own lives for the better. We were all born for a reason, with our own individual sets of gifts and that’s what makes every one of us so very special and unique. It is by interacting with others and listening and learning that we develop these gifts and our life’s plan begins to straighten out and become clearer to us. When I was growing up going through the confusing times that are the teenage years the thing that stopped me from committing suicide is I knew that if I did that selfish act that I would never understand why it is that I was put here on this Earth....this week was a reminder of why...these kids...this hope.
I am truly grateful and humbled by this opportunity and want to remind you all that:
THE POWER FOR CHANGE RESIDES IN YOUR POWER OF CHOICE!!
DREAM BIG AND TOUCH THE SKY!
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IN THIS LIFE...AND THE ONLY LIMITATIONS WHICH WE HAVE ARE THE ONES WE MAKE FOR OURSELVES.
Mahsi-Cho for all of the continuous support, it makes my spirit happy to see all of you supporting this emerging artist group, and I am TRULEY GREATFUL!!
I hope that something from this blog will remind you HOW GREAT YOU ARE!!! and that you should NEVER DOUBT the gifts that were given to you!!!

Mahsi-Cho (BIG thanks)
Much love and respect!

I saw you at a distance. . .
Just a glance at first
Your ora spoke to me. . .
Told me you were the one
I saw you at a distance
A second look
I had to take
I had to see your face again
If only for a moment
Your smile, your eyes, you & all your glory
All your glory
BUT at a distance
My heart aches
I feel tooo much
So for now at a distance you must stay
Until you see me as I see you
Cause even in my sleep you keep me awake
My breath you take
But only at a distance
For if our worlds joined
Eutopia may no longer exsist
& I would rather remember you as is. . .
At a distance. .

Political Prisoner Poetry
Written by Kiera-Dawn Kolson

Political Prisoner
Spends your last winders, springs, summers and falls
Behind bars, enclosed in a box, 6ft above the ground
Enclosed in Territorial boundaries, on reserve land
For our rights we do stand tall
And we demand justice for all the wrong doings
Political Prisoner
I am him and he is her
Guilty not for murder, or for taking a life
But for raising awareness to understand and see
Believe in equality, unity, justice for the wrongs done to you and me
Political Prisoner
I will clench my fist for you and throw it up into the air
For your injustice, I will share...your story
And make the ignorant aware
I will not live to regret
What still today has not been said yet
Political Prisoner
I will remember you, you stood up against
The red, the white and the blue too
Your words forever etched into my heart, my mind, my soul
Through your strength we will regain control
I am on the outside and you are on the in
But Political Prisoners we are two of a kind
Both living in an enclosed world, run by enclosed minds
A mind which thinks that by shutting us away from the world, will not make them hear
Make them care, but the thing about words with truth
They make you AWARE
So to all the Political Prisoners out there who speak the truth
Our truth, your truth.
Continue to do so, motivate our people, our youth
Keep fighting the system, not the people
Their will come a day when this will all pay off, we will be recognized as equals
This is not our last stand
Not until there is justice across every indigenous land
So Political Prisoner Mahsi(Thank you) for your strife
Until justice is served and our voices heard
We are all political prisoners serving life.

It is said when we walk on the Earth, we are walking on our ancestors and our unborn children. This is the relationship Native People have with the Earth. It is this relationship which gives insight into the Earth's rhythm and heartbeat and creates the feeling of belonging. If you feel you belong to something, you'll treat it with respect. If you feel you are above something, you'll treat it with disrespect. Indian Spirituality is tied to the Earth. We belong to the Earth along with all other creatures on the Earth. We must align to this realization.
