MIALP004: RAFAEL ANTON IRISARRI - DAYDREAMING
(boomkat info) *NOW ON A LIMITED VINYL EDITION - INITIAL COPIES COME ON COLOURED
VINYL* When you think of Seattle, what do you see? No doubt it revolves
around Grunge, rain or Frasier... Well prepare to have your cultural
preconceptions realigned by the stunning new album 'Daydreaming' from
Seattle's Rafael Anton Irisarri, an artist better known under his 'The
Sight Below' moniker. Whilst the notion of another record combining
modern production with a set of ivories may seem something of a cliché,
Rafael Anton Irisarri ensures any such misgivings are dispensed with
soon after you hit play - with 'Daydreaming' coaxing a set of emotions
so vivid from its stripped palate that you'll have to pinch yourself...
Opening through 'Waking Expectations', the listener is greeted by a
bloom of synths that spreads like paint in water; enveloping the senses
and encouraging the ear to delve ever deeper to uncover the piquant
piano. In no way superfluous or tacked on for classical recognition,
Irisarri seems to have written this record speficially to showcase the
haunting nature of the piano - using the electronically creased
production style to further highlight its beauty and poignant impact.
Melancholic in that way which avoids a frown, Irisarri easily slips
into the company of Deaf Center or Goldmund - bringing a snowfall of
accruing elements to bear on a record which welcomes you into its warm
and inclusive arms with both grace and genuine style. Theatrical and
frosted, 'A Thousand Yard Stare' and 'Wither' glide into your
subconscious and refuse to relent - casting out pink-hued soundscapes
and filigree melodies that allow the piano to shimmer and evolve. Rich
and creamy, 'Lumberton' (a real highlight) nods to Lynch with its
stripped canvas, whilst the eroded grace and gaseous closing of 'A
Glimpse' is a fitting epilogue to a stunning tale. Very beautiful
indeed. http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=239080Also be sure to catch Rafael on tour in EU nov/dec. dates here : http://www.myspace.com/rafaelantonirisarri

Miacd011 - Simon Scott / Navigare now released (CD/LP/MP3/FLAC)
..
This is the debut full-length release by the UK's Simon Scott. Scott has had a notable musical past: in the early '90s he was the drummer for the renowned shoegaze band Slowdive. Upon leaving Slowdive, he formed the more electronic-based group Televise. He also set up his own label, Kesh Recordings, and has so far released titles by the likes of Hannu, Sebastian Roux, Aus and Mark Templeton. More recently, Scott has been involved in several diverse projects, including his work as a member of Seavault (with Antony Ryan from Isan), and collaborations with Machinefabriek, Jasper TX and Emmanuele Errante. With Navigare, there are shades of Scott's previous output and musical interests, but as a whole, the album marks a bold new direction. Navigare
opens with "Introduction Of Cambridge," a shimmering wall of sound, its
ethereal tones and slow-burning drones gradually drawing closer and
closer, creating gorgeous uplifting melodies and textures. The
processed guitar combined with gentle swathes of interference and
underlying rhythms echoes the processes of Chain Reaction's productions
as much as it does the screeching, arcing feedback lines of Kevin Shield's guitar work. Navigare shares an affinity with the melodic content of Fennesz's work, the dark beauty of Tim Hecker's sound, and houses elements of the restraint found in Andrew Chalk's
drone compositions. What really devastates here is Scott's ability to
merge ambient passages with such memorable melodic cycles, taking the
simplest of ideas and building on them, generating murky hooks and
submerged "riffs." Scott explores textures using a variety of
instruments including sitar, violin, cello, and flute, merging them
with excerpts from field recordings; it all sounds so effortless. The
looping rhythms and slow guitars rise and grow, at times approaching
something oppressive; select pieces such as "Flood Inn" house an
underlying weight, comparable to Justin K. Broderick's Jesu and Final
projects. Perhaps the hazy drums, bass and guitar drift of "The ACC"
presents the most recognizable of stylistic qualities from Scott's back
catalog; a groove that recalls the Souvlaki-era sound in all
its glory, re-imagined in a new, darker and more expansive form.
Additionally, a guest appearance from label mate Jasper TX, a vocal
contribution from Moskitoo, and a track co-written with Rafael Anton Irisarri, adds even more depth to Scott's already ambitious vision.

2009 is upon us and what better way of starting it than with some freezing yet beautiful doom music! Elegi..s second installment "Varde" on miasmah is finally released. "Varde" tells the story of the pioneer polar explorers who risked their lives to go to some of the most hostile places on earth, to 'triumph', over the elements. The music explores the feelings those brave men must have felt, as they went into the unknown, well aware that they might never see their families again. Ice cold winds and blizzards, creaking ice, stormy waters, constant hunger, isolation, disease and death, provide the basis for the music, depicting the immensity and scale of these great white landscapes. There are some copies ready for order here at the office, but not too much. paypal to skodvin@online.no : 12euroes + shipping (1euro Norway - 2,50euro EU - 5euro World) Otherwise, get it from your favorite record store or head out to boomkat for a fresh copy. There should also be copies available at forced exposure, Plop and more within not long. Elegi will play a concert at Roxy/nod in prague together with Svarte Greiner january 24th. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Some other miasmah news!* February/march sees the wake of Miasmah on vinyl. First out is last years fantastic modern classical opus "Treny" by Jacaszek. More info about this later. * Then around spring time we have the debut album by Abbotoir Fermé musician & theatrical genious "Kreng". Very excited about this. Some info from Kreng..s myspace : "Kreng started out as a strictly sample-based project, incorporating sounds from various sources: free-jazz, new electronic generated sounds, classical modernism & vintage geographical recordings. The project became a very cinematic, theatrical device that has been used by various directors. Kreng has now scored more that 15 theatre- & danceproductions, most of them produced by Abattoir Fermé's director Stef Lernous & free-lance man Piet Arfeuille. Lately Kreng has been involved in some collaborative projects with various members of Belgiums' musical underground." http://www.myspace.com/krengmusic http://www.abattoirferme.be/
