‘Is What It Is’ marks the culmination of what has been a remarkable year for Psycatron.
The Irish duo, made up of BBC Radio DJ and
producer Paul Hamill and producer Dave Lievense have seized
taste-makers’ attention over the last 12 months with a string of
exceptional releases including ‘Deeper Shades of Black’ (Planet E) and
‘Directions / Tipping Point’ (Tronic Music). Now joining forces with
legendary dance label R&S for the double
A-side single ‘It Is What It Is’ they’re set to finally break out and
achieve the widespread acclaim they so richly deserve.
As is so often the case Psycatron’s overnight success is built on
years of honing and refining their craft, most famously as long-time
residents at Belfast’s Shine and Stiff Kitten clubs. Though their music
is ostensibly ‘dance’, and in particular the techno for which these
clubs are famous, they bring to it a much greater musicality and range
of influences than the confines of a single genre would suggest.
Take the Psycatron Remix of ‘Is What It Is’ for example. On one hand
it’s a driving piece of big-room techno, all driving bassline and
skipping, crisply programmed drums, on the other its uplifting but
harmonically ambiguous chord sequence would be right at home in one of
Radiohead’s more out-there experiments. Put these elements together,
mix in a skilfully handled and rewardingly emotive breakdown and you
have not only an outstanding record by any measure but one that in its
various aspects updates perfectly the legacy of R&S (Aphex Twin, Derrick May, Joey Beltram et al.) for the future.
The ‘So It Is’ Mix meanwhile is a very different but again unusually
intelligent take on things, this time with a backdrop of cool and very
contemporary minimal beats taking on an old-school Detroit style
arrangement elsewhere.
All in all in then this is a double-header of unusual quality; powerful
cutting-edge techno with a psychedelic edge that like all the best R&S records
is capable of conquering the big-room and the inner-space alike. Better
yet as it’s heralded as the start of an ongoing collaboration between
artist and label it means we’ll have more of the same to look forward
to in 2010. Happy New Year!

Techno and old skool lovers will know just how amazing an opportunity
remixing this 1991 rave classic is. As one of the most important
milestones in dance music evolution, these seminal hardcore pianos have
been reverberating around raves for nearly 20 years and now it’s your
chance to turn in a remix that will propel ‘Vamp’ into the future for
generations to come.
Trackitdownand its sister old skool and classics download store
Oldskoolmp3 have joined forces with R&S Records to present
producers from across the spectrum of dance music a golden chance to
reach across dancefloor history and bring Outlander ‘Vamp’ up to date
with a bang and a bleep! Last year cosmic techno production superstar
Prins Thomas took the track deep on the R&S remix compilation so
the benchmark has been set…
For the first time in the history of
many top flight Trackitdown remix competitions, a shortlist of
entries across all styles will be published for members to vote for
their overall winner in a remiX-Factor style public celebration of the
best new talent and their skills. Download the original and parts
from Trackitdown and Oldskoolmp3 and deliver your remix entry
to vamp@trackitdown.net no later than Monday 7th December to play a
part in this historical contest.
The shortlist of best entries
will then be published and members of Trackitdown will use the
unique ratings and comments feature to tell us exactly who they think
deserves to win not only a release on the legendary R&S label but
well over £100 worth of sample packs and collectors edition products
from both hosts.
So, what are you waiting for? ‘Three – two – one – zero!’

We have a brand new remix of Sun Electric's new release 'A Loco' from Sei A that you can get hold of for free via the R&S website. Sun Electric signed to R&S in 92 they've released several well received albums including 1996s ‘Present’ - another classic, existing somewhere in-between the dark pulse of the drugfloor and more elegant, sonic and harmonically rich electronic forms. An album with little options of comparison - it sounds peculiarly fragrant, almost pastoral, still electronic but somehow free-floating and light as air. Andy Graham aka Sei A is a young man from Glasgow who is rapidly transforming from one of the most promising talents in house music into the highly accomplished producer/performer that many had predicted and seeing his Sei A guise spiraling to new heights over the last year. What was once just another house artist with potential, is now someone whose biggest fans include Ben Watt, DJ Hell, John Digweed, James Zabiela, Laurent Garnier, Tiga and Hernan Cattaneo. Greetings - The release date for the Apollo "Past, Present, Future" Compilation has changed. The digital version of the album will be available exclusively on I-tunes from the 14th September and the CD will be available from the R&S store and all good retailers from the 28th. Here's a reminder of the tracklisting: 1. Pinback “Penelope” 2. Locust “One Way or Another” 3. Mundo Muzique “Andromeda” 4. Biosphere “Patashnik” 5. Aphex Twin “Heliospan” 6. Dave Angel “Dreams” 7. Manna feat Finley Quaye “Who Changed The order?” 8. Golden Girls “Kinetic” (David Morley Remix) 9. Locust “I am The Murderer” 10. Subsurfing “The Number Readers” 11. Locust “Just Like You” 12. Underworld “Sola Sistim” 13. Paul White “Alien Nature” 14. Bullion “Rude Effort” Also on the 14th, R&S welcome Cortney Tidwell to their schedule for a very special remix EP of ‘Don’t Let Stars Keep Us Tangled’. Ewan Pearson’s epic reworking was originally available as a low key download-only release, but – despite this – has become increasingly in demand, perhaps partially on the back of its having been named by Pitchfork as one of its tracks of the year following its original release, but more likely because it is an effortlessly timeless classic. Having picked up on the original release R&S now release this remix EP with Ewan Pearson’s original remix (plus a beautiful new beat less version) and newly commissioned dancefloor mix from Sei A. Tracklisting 1. Don’t Let The Stars Keep Us Tangled Up (Ewan Pearson’s Objects In Space mix) 2. Don’t Let The Stars Keep Us Tangled Up (Ewan Pearson’s All This Has Happened Before mix) 3. Don’t Let The Stars Keep Us Tangled Up (Sei A remix) Keep checking the site for more news on some exciting releases coming through this autumn. R&S

Released 14th September 2009
Following 12’s from Radio Slave, Steve Lawler, The Chain and Delphic, R&S now welcome Cortney Tidwell their schedule for a very special remix EP of ‘Don’t Let Stars Keep Us Tangled’. The critically acclaimed Nashville chanteuse has released two albums over the last three years: the latest, Boys, was released by City Slang this summer, but this single features remixes of the title track of her first full length.
The release is a stroke of genius on both parts as both artists take Cortney’s original song in a new direction for a whole new audience.

Seminal Source album, "Organised Noize", is now available from the store as a download. One of the great tracks to be heard on R&S Records 1992 In Order To Dance 4 compilation was the deeply mysterious “Neuromancer”. The name SOURCE had not yet appeared on any R&S release list, yet the man behind the Source, immensely gifted Swede ROBERT LEINER, had been studio manager and engineer of the labels own recording facility for some time. It was the 1993 album Organized Noise that really turned Roberts moniker SOURCE into a household name: throughout eight elaborated avant-dance tracks he delivered a unique blend of thunderous beats, sparkling acid and trance ingredients that was greeted with rave reviews and set alight dance floors all over the global techno village. This was dance music at its very best: uncompromising, organic and brimming with pure undiluted energy. Organized Noise also launched Robert on the live front. Before he had been spinning in either techno or ambient mod now he was playing live in front of ecstatic audiences across Europe and the States. Another piece of electronic history from R&S, now released digitally for the first time.

"Past, Present, Future" released 14th September 2009
Apollo Records, the label created as an alternative musical vehicle to it’s elder and more aggressive brother, R&S Records, has had some prestigious contributors over the years. Aphex Twin, The Orb’s Thomas Fehlmann, Manna feat Finley Quaye (production duo Quarmby and Bacon, who have produced everyone from David Bowie to The Sugababes) and Mark Van Hoen’s Locust, amongst many others.
With R&S back and in great form, it was only a matter of time before Apollo followed and label founder Renaat Vandepapeliere has compiled a wonderful listening experience here with Apollo – Past, Present, Future.
The tracklist draws from both Apollo’s own catalogue and, as always with Renaat’s compilations (see the seminal In Order To Dance series over the years), he has included a handful of his own personal favorites from outside the stable. This time round there is Underworld’s “Sola Sistim”, along with new and refreshing talents Paul White and Bullion. In addition, Dave Angel, stalwart R&S artist, has given us an exclusive new track “Dreams”.

In Order to Edit - available digitally now!
"Optimo Presents In Order To Edit", is now available digitally on R&S Records. The album consists of a host of classic R&S releases, re-edited and mixed by cult DJ J D Twitch of Optimo fame.
For Twitch, R&S is where it all started; he explains “For some people it had been Stax or Motown or West End or Prelude or DJ International... For me, around the age of 20, it was R&S records. I was smitten. Hook, line and sinker. There was a period from '89 to '92 that I would get my weekly R&S fix from my local import store and had so much confidence in the greatness of the label that I would buy without listening. Those 12" singles from Belgium were constantly pushing the envelope and literally reinventing the language of techno and rave music week by week.”
The album, previously available on CD, is now available at the following digital retailers. Note I-Tunes version includes continuous DJ Mix!
