A look at the Marquette schedule reveals some big wins for the Warriors this season….such as defeating Big Ten champion Wisconsin, Big East tourney champion Pittsburgh and a solid NCAA bound Notre Dame team. Marquette averages 76 points per game and have 4 players scoring 11 points or more per game…..in short, Marquette is a very good offensive team. The Warriors are a perimeter team getting excellent guard play from McNeal, James and Matthews. Hayward is an excellent shooter..hitting 47.5% of his shots and a red hot 45.2% from 3 point range. Coach Crean goes to the bench often as 10 players get 10 or more minutes per game. No Marquette player averages more than 30 minutes per game, so the Warriors will have fresh players on the floor throughout the game. Although, Marquette is mostly a perimeter team, they have defeated teams this season with strong inside games. Unquestionably, the Warriors strength is their superb guard play on both offense and defense….importantly, the Warriors get nearly 10 steals per game. Coach Crean has been a very good coach at Marquette and while this is not a great Warrior team, it is a very good team that is capable of competing with any team. Marquette enters the game against the Cats as a 6 point favorite and that sounds about right. This Marquette team will be a very tough opponent for the Cats.
Kentucky, having sweating out getting into the NCAA, now must turn their attention to a very difficult first NCAA game. It’s hard to evaluate UK’s performance in the SEC tourney because of all that took place as a result of the tornado. Still, the Cats didn’t play well against Georgia and they must lift significantly lift their game performance against Marquette. Hopefully, Bradley can regain his shooting eye because both Crawford and "Smooth" must have productive offensive games. However, even that won’t be enough against a team of Marquette’s caliber…..the Cats must get some good offense from Jasper, Harris and Stevenson.. A key factor for UK to have a chance of upending Marquette is they must minimize TO’s. The Warriors who snag 10 steals per game will present a big challenge for the Cats to take care of the basketball. The Cats are perfectly capable of defeating Marquette, but they must bring their A game on both offense and defense. I know the vast majority of UK fans are very proud of this Kentucky team that has overcome so much adversity and made the NCAA tourney when virtually all sports analysts has written UK off as an NIT team at most. These folks obviously underestimated the coaching genius of Billy Gillispie who has molded this Cat team into a tough minded overachieving team. I know Marquette is the favorite, but I have a good feeling that these Cats are not ready for the season to end. I like UK to defeat the Warriors and march on in the NCAA. Go Cats!

UK’s ground game this season: UK’s ground game is going to be one of the best in the SEC. We have a big battle for RB...
Derrick Locke RB- Sophomore, 4.21 40 yard dash, SEC Field athlete of the year in track, last season had 94 rushes for 536 yards and 5 TD’s, averaged 5.5 yards a rush and 43.4 yards a game.
Alfonso Smith RB- Junior, 4.24 40 yard dash, 21 carries for 152 yards and 2 TD’s, averaged 7.7 yards a carry and 14.9 yards a game.
Tony Dixon RB- Senior, 72 carries for 422 yards and 4 TD’s, 5.7 yards a carry and 37.4 yards a game.
Also we have Junior FB John Connor(5’11 228), Sophomore FB/RB Moncell Allen(he is a truck at 5’7 225 and probably bigger this year), Junior FB Maurice Grinter(6’3 250) that will be the main FB’s in the rotation.
I fully expect that Derrick Locke will come out as the starter this season. He will be one of the best in the SEC. All of these guys will be getting a lot of carries and will be racking up a ton of production.
All these was splitting time with Rafeal Little last year as well. UK’s ground game will be one of the best in the SEC. This will be the major part of our offense this year with Keenan Burton(WR), Stevie Johnson(WR), Jacob Tamme(TE), and Andre Woodson graduating.
UK’s passing game this season: UK’s air raid will be totally rebuilt this season. The only big receiver threat we have returning is Senior Dicky Lyons. We lost 4 of our 5 top receivers last year with Burton, Johnson, Tamme, and Rafeal Little graduating.
We do have 4* receiver Aaron Boyd coming in as a freshman this year from Lexington and will more than likely be a starter and one of our major targets along side Lyons.
We will have a totally new QB this year. It will be between Junior Curtis Pulley and Freshman Mike Hartline. I expect Pulley to come out the starter. He is a very mobile and dual threat QB that can beat you with his arm and his legs.
Our passing game is going to be under a major rebuilding phase this year with all that we have lost because of graduation.
Also look for David Jones to possibly put up some pretty good numbers.

The cards, so far, are being foretold. I know we have to look at one game at a time, but our magic number is down to 7 Wins, if we can take Vandy...we will be in better shape. Good Win by the Cats. Boy, would it be wild for UK to make the tourney, be fully healthy and have a 13 seed facing a 4 seeded Arizona, Washington St, Butler, UConn....that would be scary to look across at a healthy Wildcat bunch hungry and ready to rip your head off! GO CATS!
South Carolina
If we are playing the way we have the last 5 games, this one should be a victory at home. USC's record is similiar to our's with questionable losses and a blow out loss to UT.
WIN 9-9 (3-2) CORRECT
Georgia
They are undefeated at home (10-0) and they also have a questionable loss (E. Tenn St). They have a decent squad but I think this will be our first good road win in the SEC.
WIN 10-9 (4-2) CORRECT
Auburn
Good squad, they beat Miss but got thumped by UF. The Cats can handle a team like this with the toughness and passion we are playing with the last 5 games.
WIN 11-9 (5-2) CORRECT
Alabama
At HOME, we can handle this team. They are dropping games as of lately. We BETTER handle this AT RUPP.
WIN 12-9 (6-2) CORRECT
Vandy
AT Vandy, always tough...expect Vandy to give us hell and I think this is one we drop. Vandy is good at home and the court works against coaching, so your players better have the game plan in their head and be able to use little/if any sideline instruction during the game (depends on if the coach uses in-game cues to set-up offense/defense, MOST do).
LOSS 12-10 (6-3)
LSU
Not your Tyrus Thomas, Big Baby LSU of OLD.
WIN 13-10 (7-3)
Georgia
Home, we win...we are clicking good at this point with no injuries!
WIN 14-10 (8-3)
Arkansas
See Above
WIN 15-10 (9-3)
Ole Miss
We are at home, we are going against a better team in the SEC, but again, we are at home and this is Billy Ball!
WIN 16-10 (10-3)
Tennessee
AT Tenn, they get their revenge, which is not ok...but we could really shake things up going in with the swagger we need. This team is a GREAT TEAM and upsetting them once was a challenge, sweeping them I feel is going to be too hard.
LOSS 16-11 (10-4)
South Carolina
We are going to send Odom out a LOSER. This will be an OK road win but nothing to stamp on a resume.
WIN 17-11 (11-4)
Florida
At HOME, paybacks are a Bizzle!!! This Florida team is athletic and Calathes is fun to watch, but I feel this will be the game that puts them from Bubble to "expected to make" in regards to the tourney (providing we win 1-2 games in the SEC tourney).
WIN 18-11 (12-4)

Georgia has been holding serve on their home court with a perfect 10-0 record at home.... that has included wins over the likes of Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Arkansas. Last year, UK blew a 17 point lead at Georgia and lost. All SEC road games will be tough for the Cats and this one in Athens will definitely be a challenge. Humphrey is Georgia's leading scorer shooting a solid 37% from long range and also plays tough defense for the Bulldogs. However, Gaines is the best all around player for Georgia leading the team in rebounds, steals and assists. Price, a freshman, is really coming into his own since he was inserted in the starting lineup and recently was named SEC freshman of the week. Georgia utilizes it's bench with 11 players averaging 10 or more minutes per game. Although the Bulldogs are without a super star player, they get the job done by committee and do have some very solid players.
Kentucky comes into Athens without a single win on the road, but the Cats are an improving team that appears to be getting more healthy. Meeks and Jasper have made major contributions as they have returned to the lineup and hopefully there will be no more setbacks for these two very talented players. Unfortunately, Joe Crawford, who has been playing his best basketball recently, has suffered a foot problem and his status for the game is unknown. UK has played it's best basketball the past 5 games and has big time wins over Vandy,Tennessee and South Carolina. Patterson and Bradley are simply playing lights out basketball while Stevenson has really stepped his play up and has been very productive on UK's frontline. This UK team has really come together in recent weeks as demonstrated by their passion and intensity over the entire game and their continuing improvement offensively and defensively. It is important that the Cats start winning on the road and Athens would be a great place to start. This will be a tough game for the Cats, but if they continue their solid play of recent weeks....look for UK to hand Georgia their first home loss this year. Go Cats!

The University of Kentucky mens basketball program will honored the 1948 NCAA Champions UK's first NCAA Championship team at halftime of the Wildcats' game against South Carolina on Saturday in Rupp Arena. So it is with great pleasure that Wildcats Thunder honors the 1948 NCAA Championship team, the link for the video is at the bottom of this article. The write-up is courtesy of Bogansback2basil and the Video courtesy of Blueworldorder.

"In Kentucky," writes Lonnie Wheeler, "they even have a name for the basketball off-season. They call it the Kentucky Derby." Such is the fervor for basketball in Kentucky that it is commonly referred to as a religion.
It was this depth of provincial feeling that seemed to beckon Wheeler, a best-selling author who found himself fascinated by the magnificent regional pride that rose up from the Bluegrass state in the spring of 1996, oh the occasion of the University of Kentucky's sixth national championship. The famous Kentucky spirit was nothing new, of course, but by virtue of various misadventures it had been in a state of relative suspension….and returned to the commonwealth the basketball eminence which its citizens consider to be their birthright."
-- A portion of the inside cover of "Blue Yonder" Kentucky; The United States of Basketball
When did this so-called birthright begin?
I believe it happened on March 23, 1930. On the advice of a gas station attendant, a high school coach in Freeport, Illinois decided to take the UK job for $2,800 per year. Nine months later, the first of a "gazillion" victories for Adolph Rupp took place as the UK Wildcats defeated Georgetown College 67-19.
So which team put the winningest program in college basketball history on the map?
The Basil Hayden-led 1921 team, winners of UK's first conference title ever was perhaps UK's first "best" team. Hayden of course was UK's first All-American – an honor that UK basketball players have earned more times than any other D-I college basketball program.
Rupp's first great team at UK was the 1932-33 squad. It has been noted (Season Review -Varsity Basketball [Kentuckian] and John Scott's site) that while "playing one of the hardest schedules ever attempted by a Kentucky basketball team, Coach Adolph Rupp's Wildcat netters won 21 out of 24 games they participated in during the 1932-33 season and wound up the season by winning the finals at the tournament of the Southeastern Conference at Atlanta. Winning the crown in an easy fashion, the Cats brought the championship to the Bluegrass for the first time since 1921 and were heralded by basketball experts as the greatest Southern team of all time."
Of course that team was later selected as the Helms Foundation National Champion for 1933.
Many will say that the 1946 NIT championship team was UK's first great team. It would be hard to argue given the fact that it was UK's first "national" title in basketball and it was played on the "big stage" in New York's Madison Square Garden. Two members of that team would become a part of UK lore as the Fabulous Five in 1948. Ralph Beard and Wah Wah Jones tasted victory in the Garden in 1946 – and were destined to so again two years later along with Alex Groza, Cliff Barker and Kenny Rollins.
On March 23, 1948, UK won its first NCAA championship by defeating Baylor 58-42. The following year, UK would win its second consecutive NCAA title and be on its way to becoming the winningest program in college basketball and a national icon.
Sit back, relax and enjoy perhaps THE game that started UK's national rise to the top!

Miss. St. comes into the UK game riding a 6 game winning streak including 2 straight victories in the SEC. Gordon, Rhodes and Stewart produce most of the Bulldogs scoring, but Hansbrough and Varnado are offensive threats as well. Stewart and Hansbrough are the best 3 point shooters hitting 34%, but all in all, the Bulldogs have not been a great 3 point shooting team. Varnado doesn't shoot a lot, but is hitting 62% while leading the team in rebounds with 8.6 per game. Bulldog free throw shooting has been a problem this year hitting only 62%. Miss. St. has always proven tough to beat at Starkville, so the Cats will face a tough challenge in their first road game.
Importantly, UK played it's finest game of the year in upsetting 13th ranked Vandy at Rupp Arena. The Cats got terrific games from a number of players, particularly Patterson, Crawford and Bradley....also, it was great to see solid performances from Coury, Harris and Stevenson. Now the challenge for UK is to see if they can use this latest victory and increased confidence to beat a scrappy Miss. St. team in Starkville. While beating Vandy was an incredibly important win for UK, it still represents only one win in the SEC....there is still a long way to go in the SEC schedule. Hopefully, this UK team learned from the Vandy game that if they play with great energy and passion while executing effectively on the offensive and defensive ends....good things can happen....like wins! In short, UK will need to overachieve in virtually every game. In addition, there are still areas that need much improvement, particularly in the turnover department. Make no mistake, this UK team is still a team in progress and very unfortunately, the injury bug still seems to hang over the Cats. Right now, we don't know the status of Meeks or Jasper for this Miss. St. game. It's a new season....an SEC season...and the Cats got off to a great start....let's hope they can start a nice winning streak!

I know this is a football slogan, but it is time to use it for the basketball program! Our Wildcats have gotten off to a bad start, we all know that, but it is time to stand up and support the coach and team.
We are close to being healthy again, we have both Meeks and Jasper back on the floor to complete our team and this Kentucky fan thinks it is time to stand up and root for these kids like crazy!
Am I happy with the season so far? No. I have said as much, but "I Believe" this team could turn things around if they get some confidence back and a lot of support from the fans. Are we just going to sit back and complain or are we going to show our team we will stand behind them? Lets show them how special Kentucky basketball really is, lets show them the history isn't the only thing that makes UK the best NCAA basketball team of all time, but that we have the best fans in the country as well!
If you're at the games and the players make a nice play or put out a lot of effort, cheer for them when they come back to the bench, cheer for them when they go out onto the floor, cheer for them when they hit the floor and fight for a loose ball or when they dive to save a pass. Cheer for these kids so much they don't even know what we are cheering for half of the time.
Kentucky basketball is special, we have fans that will stay with the team even when it is down and it is time to silence the critics. People want to call us wacky? crazy? Well lets make them think they stepped into a mental ward of crazy and wacky UK fans screaming out their support of the Wildcats when they step into Rupp. Cheer and scream so much it makes a chill run down the backs of the opposing teams, reporters and announcers!
We may not win every game this season, but we can sure have fun with the ones we do. If we expect these kids to play hard for us every game and not quit then we shouldn't quit ourselves.
