Music: Rap/R and B:: 1 comments: by Kayode Kendall

The moral of the story, there are always going to be obstacles to overcome.
A native of Nashville, Tennesse, the rapper known as Ardamus has become well-known in our nation's capital, having lived in DC for several years. As a both an MC and a producer, he's become part of a growing collective of local artists, representing musical genres such as rap, rock, and soul/r&b. Ardamus seems to like keeping busy, all the while working long and hard to independently release his debut album, When Nothing Goes Right.
Ardams starts off When Nothing Goes Right with two tracks that might as well be sides of a coin. "When Nothing Goes Right" focuses on the hard work needed to make it as an underground MC, while "Say It To The Heart" calls for rappers who portray the thug image to be honest with themselves if they haven't done any of the dirt they claim to do on their records. "Drinksmoke", featuring singer Edith Sodolo starts off another portion of the album dealing with vices such as drugs and alcohol, and its effects on not only physical health, but also one's mental states. "What's Wrong With Me?" serves as a moment of introspection, as Ardamus looks to see of therapy can help him deal with deeper issues. "The District", featuring Keyote and DJ Eurock, seeks to answer some of his questions, as he examines his experiences of living in Washington. Even with his indictments of the city, Ardamus believes he'll long for it if he ever finds himself someplace new. Ardamus deals with sex and relationships, first on "She's A Liar", as well as "Maybe It's You". The former deals with the dangers promiscuous females, while the latter deals with couples in transition.
As an MC, Ardamus' thought process is very much geared towards storytelling, not necessarily trying to perplex listeners with complex metaphors and tongue-twisting wordplay on every track. As a producer, the aim is towards subtle grooves, but Ardamus (assisted on a few tracks by Metaphysical, as well as Mind-U-Mental) still manages a few energetic tracks to have listeners heads nodding. Throughout When Nothing Goes Right, Ardamus builds on themes of how life can get in the way of your goals and ambitions, and what you can do to stay on your path.

I recently went to an interesting album release party for local rapper/producer Ardamus. It was held at Asylum on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. A mid-sized crowd of hip-hop lovers gathered at the lounge on a cold Sunday night to watch the Nashville native with a streak of bad luck perform. When Nothing Goes Right, is the title and concept of Ardamus' E.P. What has gone wrong in his life? Well, the album takes listeners on a journey through the grimy streets of D.C., where Ardamus runs into lots of sex, drugs, shady promoters and producers.
Ardamus produced a few tracks on the undergound effort including one of my favorite songs, "Superdrugs." The song is uniquely layered with many drum loops, which is his signature sound. It also has an animated appeal that compliments the concept of the song: the super-hero, invincible effect of drugs. The lyrics go, "You can peek around/To see if no one's looking/ Up your nose brah/ You know you're sniffing Wonder Woman." Three other favorite songs of mine include "Say to the Heart:" it calls out rappers who exaggerate about their criminal activities. "What's Wrong With Me" is the most personal and heart-felt song on the album. Finally, "The District," featuring Keynote and Peace.Justice.Universal, is a mid-tempo jazzy hip-hop track that honors the very city in which Ardamus hasn't been lucky. Hopefully with his debut album, that will change.

I just wanted to say to everyone who supported me at my album release party, I greatly appreciate it. If there was a time when I needed support from people, it was then. Behind the scenes, you may not see me stressed but I've stayed that daily and keep it under wraps (well, sometimes). Mic D. Finite, Poem-cees, and Mental Stamina of Rosetta Stoned all killed it. Metaphysical held it down on the 1s and 2s. I was definitely pleased with the turnout. Shoutouts to Boogie for being the sexy merch lady. LOL. And shoutouts to my Tru Skool fam for showing up.
With that said, I'm gearing up for 2009 to put out the project with Metaphysical and the ARDAPLUS EP thats long overdue. In the meantime, I'll have random tracks come up from time to time on the page. Right now, I have "How Do You Wanna Die?" feat. Yusef posted up. And Yusef is a beast when it comes to the beats and rhymes. Check it out.
Special shout out goes to Artists Over Industry for helping with pressing my album. Big help on that note. And also, everyone who tried either helped or tried to help: Doug Lazy, Mind-U-Mental, Young Raven, Multiple Man, Peace.Justice.Universal, Keyote, Metaphysical, Sean Eddy, Terry, Caledon, and those who bought/downloaded the album. Even if you got it for free.
More to come......

I actually posted this on facebook. If you already read it, don't re-read it. Its the same shit anyways.
My Bootleg Birthday Tour: The Re-Cap
If I tagged your name, I more than likely wanted to share this with you. For whatever reason, please read if you want to kill some time.
This was not a real tour. LOL. It was just me taking time off around my birthday to actually pursue a few things in my life that I knew I wouldn't do later. If anything, it was good for me because you need the time alone to clear your head.
Sept. 30th Tues. (New York) --- Getting up to NY from DC for $9.50 is what's really good. And being there to sit in on the Spitkicker Radio show to be a guest on the show was great. If you listen to XM, its a show that comes on Sirius XM 65 The Rhyme. They've had guests such as AZ, Royce Da 5'9, and etc. Its hosted by Courtney Brown, legendary DJ Mr. Len, and the sidekick, S-Dot. I was up there to more so observe and show support. I failed at doing any shameless promo which is what I'll probably end up doing more so in the future. It was mentioned on the show that I do music and that I had the shows but I didn't get into too much or even give out a link for people to check my shit out at (major fail on my part........hahaha). But it was cool getting to meet Bad Boy producer Amadeus as well as femcees Lady Luck and Babs. Mysonne and E. Ness were there but I wasn't able to meet since I had get my ass back to DC so, I could get ready to head out to the Baltimore area. If you listen to Sirius XM, check out XM 65 The Rhyme at 06:00pm EST Saturday. Not sure when it will air but hopefully it will be soon. And special shoutouts to Mondee who is one ill producer I got to sit down with before I sat in on the Spitkicker Radio show. Dude has worked with cats such as Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, and Cassidy. Truly talented dude.
Oct. 1st Weds. (Dundalk/Baltimore, MD) --- My actual birthday; thanx to everyone for the birthday wishes. I made the mistake of treating it like a normal day and laying around my house for a while. But getting in at 2AM from NY and not being able to catch a cab on a weeknight will do that sort of thing to you. But I made time to pick up the rental car, rack up on quite a few groceries, and head out for the show barely dodging traffic. For this show, I received the tickets I had to presale the day of the show (long story behind that); on the upside I got some new equipment that is blowing my mind right now whenever i used it. The spot I performed at was called the Black Hole Rock Club; back in the day it used to be called The Zoo. From what I was told, it was one of those ill places where bar fights jump off. On that Roadhouse shit. Shoutouts to Chris for booking me for this and understanding the trouble with the tickets; one of the most laidback promoters I've met. The show went well and I got a good response; even met a young lady who does promotions.
Oct. 2nd Thurs. (Harrisburg, PA.) --- If you ever try to leave a city like DC to be somewhere out of state, leave way before 3pm. I learned that the hard way trying to cut through Maryland running into traffic 4 different times. And of course, heading up to PA, I should've known that would happen. But anyways, I have to say Harrisburg is a wonderful place to check out. Has a real industrial feel and it was alot bigger than what I had expected it to be. The place I performed was at the Midtown Tavern for The STLP event that Artists Over Industry does. Shoutouts to them for making a brotha feel real welcome. Had to wait a bit to perform because alot of people came in to watch the Palin/Biden debate; which had quite few people laughing whenever Palin let an "aw shucks" kinda comment. But anyway, I got to perform around 11pm. There was a female I previously was introduced to that decided to dance with me when I performed my song "Superdrugs"; for the females reading this, she did that by her own submission. I mean, I'm sweating and yelling into a mic....I don't see how that got up to do all that but I guess its fetish. Hahaha. It was like a game of concentration having a female grind on you and trying rap. I'll never understand how Luke did it back in the day. But I pulled it off. Sweating my ass off and feeling tired, I got a really good response from the show.
Overall: I wish my album was pressed up for this so I would've been able to slang merch. But thats a different story. Doing this solo for these two days wasn't bad but I could see how hard it is for those who aren't prepared for the possibility of getting jerked on a number of things. But I must admit, I gave myself the greatest gift (besides the guy upstairs giving me life), the chance to do what I've been trying to do. Even if it was just me going from city to city to do shows for little to no money, it was good that I did it. Next time, I'm shooting for a week's worth of shows. Then we'll try maybe a month. Hahaha.

Current mood: frustrated
Lets break this down in 3 parts.
1) After months and damn near a year of dealing with the cat that runs the label, he was not in a financial position to do so. I stopped asking questions to see whats going on and etc. But not to worry, I'm already going to press my album up myself in some fashion. Its long overdue but at least those of you on the internet got a taste of it. The back and forth along with the album cover stuff and the label logo and etc......I mean, it was getting a little weird but I abided by it because, if they're willing to press the album up, that means the label believes in what I'm doing. Well, at least thats what I'm thinking. So in the end, shit failed. I wish DJ Boy Online Records the best of luck of whatever business they tend to get into in the future.
2) So, this booking game is pretty weird. I've learned that I need someone to help with me booking. LMAO. Alot of my peers have encountered things with performing that I haven't encountered myself. But they've gotten to a point where they've developed relationships with the promoters and the people who do the booking. Me......I'm not sure if people think I'm joking or what but, I realized I have to keep pressing to do this. Another thing I feel is that some of these guys may not want to deal with me because I am unlike my peers. I'm probably wrong but this is me being honest after a long time of observing how people get put on to doing shows. Shoutouts to everyone thats tried to help me with performances and booking shows. Hopefully, I can get more of these venue owners on my side. So far not so good but I'm trying.
3) Yes, I've decided on pricing tracks at a cheap price that won't disclose just yet. In order for me to build up my gear and studio, I need some more income. I thrown out alot of tracks for free to help alot quite a few people. And others have paid for them. Right now, I just want to get my focus back on 3:15 AM MUSIC, LLC. and mold to where I wanted it to be in the first place. My own shit. If you're interested, please conact me at ardamus1979@gmail.com I have a ton of tracks I haven't used in a while and other tracks people never used and were supposed to.
Thanx for paying attention to my ranting,
Ardamus

If you haven't noticed already, I love to expose the raw talent coming out of my hometown the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia). Meet Ardamus, a Washington D.C. emcee that has been making noise since 1998 and has just released his album When Nothing Goes Right via iTUNES. Equipped with a gruff, stomping flow and commanding cadence, Ardamus demands your attention once his vocals slam against the instrumental.
Below are three tracks to get familiar with Ardamus before he drops his upcoming projects with Double Plus (Ardaplus) called A Fistfull of Plutonium, a record with Metaphysical entitled A Day In The Life of Modern Day Living and more tracks with the likes of Educated Consumers and Aeon (who has produced for Tanya Morgan). Enjoy and show the DMV some love.

Current mood:Trying not to punch a hole in the wall
Its about that time again. No matter how much I try to avoid trying not to show my anger about shit, it brings me back to here.
The good news: album sales online are not bad and the show I had in L.A. went well even though some funny shit was going on as far as scheduling. And I have two more projects on deck collaborating with other artists. I'll post more about that sometime.
The bad news: STILL NO MAJOR OPENERS IN MY AREA JUST YET. I realized this when I saw how many folks that friends of mine have been able to open for. And the same people who set these cats up to open for some of these folks have known me for years. Given me props on my stuff and etc. But NEVER.....and I mean NEVER have I ever gotten to that point of getting big openers like most of these other cats have. I have been trying to figure what it is I'm doing wrong. But I realized......not being the favorite is one of the reasons. Or more so, maybe because I'm not a sneaky person. I don't know. I'll say that I know people who's gotten further than I have on this and it was because of the connections; yet we had the SAME connections. Don't get me wrong, I support my friends but the thing is.....I can't grasp my head around this. No matter how much I try to let all that shit go......I still get pissed about this. And its all about marking time. Friends of mine can say "hey, I got to open for so and so" and that shit can take them far in some aspects which is what kills me about this. And I can't say I haven't been able to share the stage with some ill artists. But I know that in certain settings when you perform, you can get people to focus on your music more than a festival or a conference where you're lined up with dozens of acts. Its not bad at all as far as exposure but it doesn't have the same impact.
Not sure what to do about this. Already confronted two people who were making things happen and it didn't really result in anything. Maybe the future will have something better. All I know is know that I'm through fucking around. Besides have a sonicbids account, I'm trying to figure out the next move. If you can help......then help. Or maybe say something that will keep my focus right. If not, don't answer in this blog. Peace.

Ok.....
For months, I talked about this album and its finally out. So far, I’ve seen it on amazon and iTunes. And I very happy to see my solo project hit the stores some kind of way. Its part of my life’s work that I put alot of time into. And I’ve gotten support on it.
However.....
I check my album and find out one of the tracks have been screwed up. Track 2 which happens to be the title track called "When Nothing Goes Right" was complete silence. Along with that, when I checked Amazon.....they had the wrong artwork up for my album. I previously uploaded a different version of the cover and paid them to replace with a current file; Amazon apparently didn’t have that. The company I went through, tunecore, was definitely contacted immediately. I had one person that was offering to help but then fell off the face of the earth somehow after he responded that I needed to resend the track that had silence because he heard that as well. I called again and spoke with a young lady that let me know the gentlemen I spoke to was busy and they would look into it and give me a call back. I wait and I don’t get a call back. Pissed that I got no response, I sent an email letting them if its not corrected that I will be forced to take another course of action. I got a response back today from someone that was willing to help. Hopefully, this problem will be resolved and this will be the end of it. I let a lot of shit slide in my life. From biting my tongue on calling women "bitches" when some of them deserved it (long story) to trying to be a peaceful person about a situation when I’m the one who’s not even starting shit (another long story) but this right here......is my mark in time of my life. I worked pretty fuckin’ hard to get this album out somehow and now I’m getting the run around again. Its bad enough I got jerked by promoters in the past along with other shit but damn......the release of my album could’ve been better. Fuck it......When Nothing Goes Right. Its ironic it happened and thats the name of my album.
I posted a link that takes you to iTUNES on my page if you want to cop it. Type in my name (Ardamus) and the album should appear for sale for $9.99. If you cop it and track 2 is still silent, hit me up and I will email the track to you. Thanks to everyone that has supported. Peace.
