Charis & Cliterati pair up to present an inviting and fierce no mic & reading series on the 3rd Thursday of every month & this series cultivates the voices of authors, novices and an assortment of poets, songstresses and story tellers. Cliterati is 8 years old and counting, open to all because ALL OPEN MOUTHS HAVE A VOICE. This September we are excited to feature a poetry performance by award-winning artist Aerle Taree, who is a founding member of the popular music group, Arrested Development. Aerle's featured reading will include poems from her book, Poetaree: The Jurisprudence of Life.

You will also hear from Art Amok Slam Team's Special Guest
Lindsay Miller, touring Woman of the World Poet from Arizona.

Here's a bit about Aerle's book:
Poetaree: The Jurisprudence of Life
Earth, Wind and Fire is the title track to PoeTaree: The Jurisprudence of Life. It's like I wrote the complete manuscript to one of their timeless hit songs. The eighth chapter of this book is to encourage you to write. PoeTaree is a collection of many topics I thought about while touring Europe, Australia and Lollapalooza. Filled with stories and memories, this book is delivered in a way for one and all to enjoy. Take an adventure with me as I employ the writing techniques used to compose the hit single Tennessee for Arrested Development. Become a PoeTaree person by completing this book and filling the eighth chapter with your own words. I encourage you to expand your mind and lift your soul with all of my solo projects involving PoeTaree: The Jurisprudence of Life

Come and BE INSPIRED TO WRITE!

About Lindsay:
Lindsay Miller found slam poetry when she wandered into the Mercury Cafe in Denver, CO on Halloween of 2004. Upon moving to Tucson, AZ, Lindsay co-founded the Ocotillo Poetry Slam along with Teresa Driver and Maya Asher. Lindsay has competed on slam teams representing Tucson regionally and nationally since 2006. As an individual, she competed in the Arizona All-Star Slam 2007 and the Women of the World Poetry Slam 2008 and 2009. She was the Tucson City Slam Champion in 2007 and 2008.

Most of her poems are proper nouns. She is especially inspired by people who are cooler than she is, and is prone to occasional outbursts of feminism.

She has self-published two chapbooks, Anna Perenna (2005) and Pull Yourself Up By Your Crutches (2008).

***On DECK next month, we will feature singer/..songwriter ELLIS, Oct.15th and a Queer Slam Oct.27th!

Winner of Persea's 2008 Lexi Rudnitsky Poetry Prize for American Women Poets.
The impetus of this harrowing debut lies in tragedy: "My father shook the gun to get the bullet out. / He was a careless man, but only once." Yet even amidst a constant ache, the poems in "Mistaken for Song" do not refuse solace. Instead, they find consolation, communion, and even joy in the untamed natural world, rendered at every turn by Tara Bray's pitch-perfect ear for heartbreaking music.

Hi!

Cliterati will be honoring Audre Lorde Thursday, February 19th at Charis Books and More. We'll be reading some of our favorite Audre passages and poems, works inspired by her as well as poetry of empowerment and coming to voice.

Need a writing prompt? How about the phrase "poetry is not a luxury," what does that mean to you and what are the implications of poetry and art as not being luxuries, hobbies, frills, but necessary tools for survival? Also, what does it mean to be a Sister Outsider or an "outsider" and how does this inform writing as not a luxury?

Join us as we explore this and celebrate Audre Lorde's birthday!

Charis, Cliterati, & ZAMI are teaming up to commemorate our favorite woman warrior, feminst icon Audre Lorde. We will honor her memory with an open mic and birthday party, and celebrate her legacy of writing as activism, because "poetry is not a luxury." You are invited to perform original work that is inspired by Audre's words or ideas, or to read your favorite pieces from the collected works of Audre Lorde. Come celebrate your inner warrior and help us honor Audre as the muse!

Within this theme, we are honored to feature a performance by award-winning slam poet Chauncey Beaty, who will be representing Atlanta's Art Amok slam team at the 2009 Women of the World Poetry Slam.
