Carol Burnett: A life sketch

A PBS documentary of comedienne will take viewers back to era of variety shows.
The classic bits from "The Carol Burnett Show" are all here, from Starlet O'Hara clad in green drapes, complete with curtain-rod shoulder pads, to frizzy-haired Eunice, shrilly badmouthing her family, to that unparalleled Tarzan yell.
A new PBS documentary, "Carol Burnett: A Woman of Character," showcases the comedian's signature creations and revisits a prime-time era in which variety shows reigned.
"There's nothing like that on the air now," said Burnett, 74, who rose to comic stardom as a cast member of "The Garry Moore Show," seen in black-and-white film clips during the documentary. "You've got dance shows and singing shows, but the networks don't trust the V word now."
Burnett said she was flattered when "American Masters" producers approached her about doing the documentary.
"It's a living, moving scrapbook, and I thought it would be nice for my grandchildren and, someday, great-grandchildren to see," she said. She had been impressed with the "American Masters" featuring Bob Newhart in 2006, she said, "but I don't know where they found some of that (footage)."
The documentary includes Burnett's reflections on her career, as well as interviews with colleagues and friends. Also featured: vintage film of appearances with Ed Sullivan and on Moore's show, a weekly collection of songs, skits and stand-up that spotlighted Burnett's versatile wit and timing.
The 90-minute program includes one of Burnett's rarely seen performances of a novelty song that brought her national attention: "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles." Dulles was then secretary of state.
"After I had done that number on the Jack Paar show, he (Dulles) was on "Meet the Press,"' Burnett recalled. "The interviewer asked him, "Mr. Secretary, what is going on between you and this girl who sings that love song about you?' And he got this twinkle in his eye and said, "I never discuss matters of the heart in public.' "
Burnett also has done a significant amount of film and stage work, and the special shows footage of her in the 1964 TV adaptation of her Broadway musical hit "Once Upon a Mattress."
Her longtime friends and comic foils Tim Conway and Harvey Korman are among the interviewees, along with other cast members and writers from her CBS variety series.
Contemporaries Julie Andrews, Betty White, Florence Henderson and Phyllis Diller pay tribute. Also interviewed are performers influenced by Burnett's career, such as Jenna Elfman and Tracy Ullman. Ullman was Burnett's co-star in another TV version of "Once Upon a Mattress."
Burnett's own reminiscences include a look at her childhood. The daughter of divorced, alcoholic parents, Burnett was raised primarily by her maternal grandmother - the beloved "Nanny" who inspired Burnett's familiar ear-tweak tribute. The shy Burnett found an outlet for make-believe in the movies she and her grandmother attended nearly every day.
"The exciting thing is, I grew up watching Betty Grable and Lana Turner, and they ended up being guests on the show," Burnett said.
"The Carol Burnett Show," spanning 11 seasons (from 1967-78) and capturing 25 Emmys, remains one of Burnett's favorite experiences.
"We played for the studio audience, and we'd just go as if it were a live show," she said. "I always believed if the 300 folks in the audience are gonna laugh, so are the ones watching at home. We didn't do many retakes - unless the scenery fell down and hit someone." Tune in

SAN ANTONIO — A local organization led by former U.S. housing secretary Henry Cisneros has committed to raise enough money to save the childhood home of comedian Carol Burnett.
American Sunrise, a nonprofit housing and education program, said it will raise the $75,000 to $100,000 needed to move the century-old house from its current location in San Antonio. The Bill Miller Bar-B-Q restaurant chain wants to use the site for a parking lot.
Cisneros said the house will become a part of the American Sunrise campus in San Antonio.
American Sunrise was founded by Cisneros, a former San Antonio mayor, and his wife, Mary Alice Cisneros, who was elected to the City Council this month.
Burnett lived in the folk Victorian home until she was 7. She has often spoken of her memories of the house, including cold enchiladas for breakfast, donated used girls clothes and roller-skating on the hardwood floors.
In May 2006, the gray house with red-and-white trim was listed for $225,000.
Burnett's famed career has included Broadway, movies and the acclaimed "The Carol Burnett Show," a CBS variety show that ran from 1967 to 78.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A federal judge said he will dismiss Carol Burnett's $2 million copyright infringement lawsuit over the use of her cleaning woman character in the animated series "Family Guy."
U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson said in a written tentative ruling Friday that he planned to dismiss the lawsuit against 20th Century Fox. He will issue a final ruling later.
The 74-year-old comedian sued the studio in March, contending that the Fox show didn't have her permission to include her Charwoman character in an April 2006 episode.
The episode portrayed the character as a cleaning woman in a sex shop and also used a version of the theme music to her old TV series without permission, the lawsuit claimed.
At the time, the studio said it was surprised by the lawsuit over what amounted to about an 18-second scene.
A call to 20th Century Fox Television spokesman Chris Alexander on Friday was not immediately returned.
Burnett's attorney, Robert Denton, could not immediately be reached for comment.

TRIVIA:
Was forced to drop out of the 1964 Broadway musical "Fade Out, Fade In" after sustaining a neck injury in a taxi accident. The show's producers sued her for breach of contract, but the suit was later dropped.
In 1981, she successfully sued the "National Enquirer" for libel, prompted by its article describing her alleged public drunkenness during an altercation with then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger while in a Washington restaurant. The case remains a landmark in the study of libel cases involving celebrities, even though the unprecedented $1.6 million verdict (including $300,000 in personal damages and $1.3 million in "punitive" damages) was later reduced on appeal and the case was eventually settled out of court. Burnett donated the money to charity. She said she pursued the lawsuit because, as the daughter of two deceased alcoholics, the gossip paper's fabrication wounded her emotionally and that they should be punished for their irresponsibility when writing lies about celebrities.
Daughter Erin Hamilton was Miss Golden Globe 1993.
Considered Jim Nabors to be her good luck charm. He appeared as a guest on the first episode of "The Carol Burnett Show" (1967), and when the show took off, she had him back on the first episode of every season.
When asked, on her show, who her favorite actor was, she replied, "Anthony Hopkins - you know, the little English guy?"
Lost her daughter, Carrie Hamilton, on January 20, 2002 to lung and brain cancer.
Used to work as an usherette in a movie theater in Hollywood.
Years later, when she received a star on the Hollywood Blvd. Walk of Fame, she asked for it to placed in front of the theater where she used to work.
1985: Inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.
Received Special Tony Award in 1969. She was also twice nominated for the Tony Award: in 1960, as Best Actress (Musical) for "Once Upon a Mattress," a performance she recreated in a television special of the same name, Once Upon a Mattress (1972) (TV); and in 1996, as Best Actress (Play) for "Moon Over Buffalo."
Was a good friend of Lucille Ball, with whom she appeared several times on "The Lucy Show" (1962).
At age 10, comedian Jim Carrey sent her his resume.
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush on 9 November 2005. Other recipients were Frank Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Gen. Richard Myers, Paul Rusesabagina, Andy Griffith, Aretha Franklin, Vint Cerf and his Internet co developer Robert Kahn, Jack Nicklaus, Alan Greenspan, and former congressman G.V "Sonny" Montgomery.
Lucille Ball gave Carol her first baby shower.
Has appeared in three different television adaptations of "Once Upon A Mattress", the Broadway version of the fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea." In the 1964 and 1972 versions, she played Princess Winnifred. 33 years later, she played Queen Aggravain in the 2005 Disney adaptation.
Best friends with Julie Andrews.
Bob Mackie is her favorite designer. She often wore his costumes for the Carol Burnett Show.
Her famous left ear pulling during all on-camera appearances is a way of saying "Hello" to her late grandmother. It was her grandmother who raised her and took her to the movies all the time.
Besides her left ear pull.. she's also well-known for her Tarzan yell.
WHERE IS SHE NOW:
Carol still is working. She is scheduled to be in an upcoming movie called 'The Last Guy on Earth.'
She also just appeared on All My Children which is her favorite soap opera.
And if you watch Desperate Housewives you may remember Carol making an appearance last year.
She also seems to be busy being honored or receiving some kind of award.

LOS ANGELES - Carol Burnett has filed a $2 million copyright infringement lawsuit against 20th Century Fox, claiming her cleaning woman character was portrayed on the animated series "Family Guy." The U.S. District Court lawsuit, which was filed Thursday, said the Fox show didn't have the 73-year-old comedian's permission to include her cleaning woman character, Charwoman, in an April 2006 episode.
The episode shows Charwoman as a porno-shop maid, and it uses what the lawsuit called an "altered version" of Burnett's theme music. The characters in the show also perform Burnett's signature ear tug, the lawsuit said.
Besides copyright infringement, Burnett alleges 20th Century Fox violated her publicity rights.
The studio said it was surprised by the lawsuit over what amounted to about an 18-second scene.
"`Family Guy,' like `The Carol Burnett Show,' is famous for its pop culture parodies and satirical jabs at celebrities. We are surprised that Ms. Burnett, who has made a career of spoofing others on television, would go so far as to sue `Family Guy' for a simple bit of comedy," said 20th Century Fox Television spokesman Chris Alexander.

Welcome to the Carol Burnett Fan Site! I believe that Carol Burnett is truly the best comedienne of our time, and I am dedicating the site to her. As a young girl growing up in the late 60's and early 70's, I used to sneak watching The Carol Burnett Show on Monday nights at 10pm on CBS – keeping the volume on low so my parents wouldn't hear it. Every skit was funnier than the last and the costumes were awesome…and I would look forward to the guest stars that were on each week. Even today, I can sit and the show over and over again.
There are so many wonderful sites dedicated to well-known people, that I thought Carol Burnett needed one too. I only ask that you do not leave lewd/obscene comments and/or pix in the comments. They will be deleted. Let's show the lady some respect…she's earned it.
I will be adding more pix and memorable moments as time allows and I will also try to post any appearances that she may have coming up.
Thanks for stopping by!
