We're thrilled to announce that this November, the Arena will welcome Brooklyn's own Paul Auster, to read, sign, discuss, and celebrate the publication of his new novel, Invisible. All over Brooklyn you can find Auster's 15 novels shelved as classics and best sellers, as staff picks and local favorites; and beyond our borough you can find his books—including The New York Trilogy and The Brooklyn Follies—being read and praised and reread all over the world. John Freeman, editor of Granta and former chair of the National Book Critics Circle, will host the evening and discuss with the author the new book that has been heralded as his most passionate and surprising book to date.
About Invisible:
Sinuously constructed in four interlocking parts, Paul Auster's fifteenth novel opens in New York City in the spring of 1967 when 20-year-old Adam Walker, an aspiring poet and student at Columbia University, meets the enigmatic Frenchman Rudolf Born and his silent and seductive girlfriend, Margot. Before long, Walker finds himself caught in a perverse triangle that leads to a sudden, shocking act of violence that will alter the course of his life.

Three different narrators tell the story of Invisible, a novel that travels in time from 1967 to 2007 and moves from Morningside Heights to the Left Bank of Paris to a remote island in the Caribbean. It is a book of youthful rage, unbridled sexual hunger, and a relentless quest for justice. With uncompromising insight, Auster takes us into the shadowy borderland between truth and memory, between authorship and identity, to produce a work of unforgettable power that confirms his reputation as "one of America's most spectacularly inventive writers," (The Times Literary Supplement).

About Paul Auster:
Paul Auster is the best-selling author of Man in the Dark, The Brooklyn Follies, and The Book of Illusions. I Thought My Father Was God, the NPR National Story Project Anthology, which he edited, was also a national best seller. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
About John Freeman:
John Freeman is an award-winning writer and book critic who has written for numerous publications, including the New York Times Book Review, the Los Angeles Times, People, and The Wall Street Journal. Freeman won the 2007 James Patterson PageTurner Award. He was recently named editor of Granta. He lives in New York City and London.

The powerHouse Arena is pleased to invite you to a kids' reading and signing for:

The Jungle Grapevine
by Alex Beard

Sunday, November 15, 2009, 4–5PM
powerHouse Arena · 37 Main Street (corner of Water & Main St) · DUMBO, Brooklyn

Please join us for a Sunday afternoon kids' reading and arts and crafts event at The powerHouse Arena, featuring author/illustrator Alex Beard.

About The Jungle Grapevine:
When animals in the jungle hear that the watering hole is drying up things really start to get wild...

Ever wonder how rumors get started and tales twisted? In The Jungle Grapevine, acclaimed artist and debut author Alex Beard reinterprets his memories of the African savanna to create a modern retelling of the classic telephone game.

When Bird mixes up something Turtle says, he accidentally starts a rumor about the watering hole drying up. One story leads to another, with animals making their own silly assumptions and causing panic in the jungle. No one is hearing anything right, and soon the animals are in an uproar. Elephant is trumpeting, Croc is snapping, and the Flamingos are fleeing! Beard's story will have children wondering if peace can ever be restored to the animal kingdom.

About Alex Beard
"Over time, it has become my mission to share the creative experience with as many people as possible, using every tool I can find. I work to demystify art and to break through barriers. I hope to touch the imagination of children and adults alike."
—Alex Beard

Alex Beard is an accomplished painter, whose artwork hangs on public and private walls around the world, and is represented by galleries in New Orleans and New York. He lives in New York and New Orleans with his family.

Editor Shana Liebman showcases the raconteurial gifts of a proud, searching, and irreverent new generation of American Jews on such diverse subjects as stalkers, cowboys, male strippers, and serving a rabbi a sandwich he would have wished was chopped liver.

About Sex, Drugs & Gefilte Fish: The Heeb Storytelling Collection:
Sex, Drugs & Gefilte Fish is the first book from Heeb, the magazine that shows us how being Jewish can be hilarious, touching, and downright strange. This collection captures a unique moment for a generation of Jews who have lost some ties with traditional Jewish life, but still consider themselves Jewish. It brings together humorous, reflective tales about angst-ridden experiences from some of the generation's leading writers, comedians, actors, artists, and musicians. The stories here come from a literary series launched by Heeb in the summer of 2003 that strives, like the magazine, to represent the whole spectrum of modern-day Jewishness and the widening parameters of what constitutes a Jewish story, and to reflect the fluidity of the Jewish and secular cultures that young Jews experience today.
About Heeb:
Heeb launched in 2002 to popular and critical acclaim and soon evolved into the world's premiere Jewish lifestyle brand. Today, the Heeb brand finds itself firmly enmeshed in the fabric of American popular culture. With a worldwide readership of 150,000, it is increasingly becoming a multimedia magnet for the young, influential and culturally savvy.

About Shana Liebman:
Shana Liebman, the Arts Editor of Heeb Magazine, conceived and now curates the Heeb Storytelling series. She graduated from Brown University and has an MFA in fiction writing from Columbia University. She is also a freelance writer and editor whose work has been published in magazines including Salon, Travel & Leisure, The New York Observer and New York Magazine.

Yes We Can is the story of Barack Obama's historic, world-changing journey from a junior Senator from Illinois to President of the United States of America as documented by Scout Tufankjian, the only independent photographer to cover his entire campaign from before he announced his run, through the Election Night celebration in Chicago's Grant Park.

Obama's grassroots journey touched something profound in America, inspiring millions of Americans, young and old, rich and poor, and from every racial and ethnic background, bringing together disparate people throughout the electorate in the service of change. In the course of his visits to almost every state in the union, Obama electrified record-breaking crowds at his rallies and motivated millions of people to engage in the political process. The results have been nothing short of a revolution in political strategy, communication, and activism.

Be it a skeptical old farmer from Tama, Iowa, who was surprised to realize that he had something in common with this young black politician, or an eight-year-old boy from Los Angeles who couldn't stop saying, "He looks like me and he is going to be President!", Senator Obama instilled a feeling of unity and hope in a nation scarred by divisive politics and pessimism. Obama's campaign created a movement, a faith, and a feeling that has not been present in American politics for decades—if ever.

Yes We Can is a comprehensive and intimate portrait of this world-changing campaign. With more than 200 color photographs by Tufankjian, the book takes the reader along on Obama's personal and political journey. Tufankjian was there from the beginning.

From coffee shops and diners to auto manufacturing plants and bowling alleys, Tufankjian followed Obama as he wooed potential voters in expensive houses as well as in poverty-stricken Indian reservations. She covered the primaries, the debates, and the final weeks of the hard-fought campaign, shooting more than 12,000 images—the deepest, most comprehensive, and most personal portrait of the man and his run as well as of the people who came to see him, hear him, and vote for him. Yes We Can is as much about Americans and their hopes and visions for America as it is about the man that gave them voice.

Scout Tufankjian has had photographs published in every major newspaper and news magazine, including Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, People, The Guardian, ELLE, Esquire, Essence, Rolling Stone, Fortune, The Times of London, Stern, Der Spiegel, and many others. Before covering the Obama campaign, Tufankjian worked photographing the conflict in the Middle East, primarily the Gaza Strip, for four years. Tufankjian is represented by Polaris Images. She lives in Brooklyn, and has a B.A. in Political Science from Yale.

Luis "DJ Disco Wiz" Cedeño, the first Latino hip hop DJ, is credited for being the first DJ to make a "mixed plate" in 1977 along with Grandmaster Caz. Wiz was a major contributor in the opening of the Experience Music Project in Seattle in 2000, and was instrumental in the making of Jim Fricke and Charlie Ahearn's Yes Yes Y'all (Da Capo Press, 2002). His first book, It's Just Begun, written with Ivan Sanchez will be released with Miss Rosen Editions/powerHouse Books in June 2009. Wiz was also featured in the Emmy-nominated VH1 Rock Doc NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell, and is the creator and founder of the Hip-Hop Meets Spoken Wordz series.
