a picture of the house you once called home, the smell of white roses, lavender in the garden and a sound too distant to recognise. anything can and everything will trigger memories. fragments of sound have been manipulated by the [law-rah] collective to tell a new story, to create a new reality with everything you find on your way. this can be anything from mental images to hidden emotions, from unknown smells to forgotten dreams. everything transforms you into who you are now, in this reality, at this moment. though it's not likely that every part of who you are is the truth. your memories are your interpretation of the truth and don't have to be truthfull at all.

as a child you played the game where one person tells a sentence and it follows a chain of people. what comes out of it is a new sentence, which very probably has nothing to do with the beginning. on their new album 'solitaire' the [law-rah] collective is playing exactly that game, albeit differently.

like on the 2008 ant-zen album 'inspiration', the duo martijn pieck and bauke van der wal upped the ante with the collective's 7th full release. sound wise they return to the collective's origins: a combination of ambient structures and deep drones with sudden breaks in the sound spectrum. 'solitaire's threatening and oppressive mood will leave you in a state and in a place where you haven't been before. a new reality which is more then the sum of its parts.

Forced Nature Volume One features 10 tracks by FON artists LAN Formatique, synnack, Freeze Etch, Concrete Cookie and the Maggot Farmer, Perfection Plastic (unreleased!), and The [law-rah] Collective (exclusive!).

The compilation was compiled in October 2008 by Clint Sand from synnack and Peter Lee of Force of Nature and is available as a FREE DOWNLOAD on http://www.forceofnature.cc (catalog FON15).

The track by the [law-rah] collective can be seen as a follow-up to the highly acclaimed 'Vesuvius' 12" which was released on the same label.

Download the sampler and - if you like what you hear - show your support by buying something from their catalog. For example one of the very last copies of that same 12" by [law-rah] ;-)

the [law-rah] collective - inspiration - ant-zen act 224

title: inspiration
artist: the [law-rah] collective
catalog: ant-zen act224
packaging: cd gatefold sleeve

this time the [law-rah] collective is martijn pieck and bauke van der wal. bauke is the founder and original member of the collective, hence the first releases were the result of his twisted mind. during the years of law-rah's existence, he has collaborated with several people and re-evaluated the collective nature of the project. this in turn has changed a solo project with a weird name to a true collective of artists in both the audio and visual arenas. martijn and bauke have known each other since 1993 and shared many hours making music together. however, in the mid 90's both martijn and bauke went in different directions when it came to creating electronic music. in the autumn of 2007 the time was right and they once again started making music together. with this release martijn has become a full member of the collective and ideas for many future projects are already locked into their collective minds. "it's a new collective now. so a new i ... i (me) becomes us. after incarnation and isolation, now inspiration."
(bauke van der wal)

compared with the collective's conceptual works like '1953', which was an earlier release by bauke and dutch writer, vocalist and member of the collective hiekelien van den herik, this album's subject is a more private and subliminal one. all track titles are related to baukes and martijns home town utrecht, and to the history they shared there over the years. a quote from a band both bauke and martijn appreciate is printed on the cover as a good example of their 'inspiration' and perfectly illustrates their thoughts about this town:

"this is the place where all roads meet, the place where all is secret. the place where time stands still in the comfort of night and love becomes will in the presence of light. i never want to leave..."
(taken from 'terminus' by psychic tv)

musically, 'inspiration' can be clearly identified as a new step in the [law-rah] collective's exploration of their electronic microcosm. sub-bass lines and drones interact with beautiful idm'ish melodic lines that are complimented by pulsing beat sequences - inducing an overall majestic and sometimes melancholic impression. this music is filled with deep, haunting and phantasmagorial sounds that are expertly adapted to give one's fancy a full scope of emotion. more simply put, this is a inspired journey through two persons' past and present.

"the basics from the [law-rah] collective always was that you create your own imaginary movie and we'll take care of the soundtrack..."
(bauke van der wal)

THE [LAW-RAH] COLLECTIVE - ...AS IT IS... (double 3"CD by Spectre Records)
Releases by Belgium's Spectre label always look great - a sort of cross-over between Staalplaat and Ant-Zen, and also the music they release may be found in similar areas.
The [Law-rah] Collective did pop up in Vital Weekly before, but usually for events they organize in Utrecht. Events that deal with ambient music, and their own music is never far away. Their previous release, '1953' (also on Spectre) was a conceptual, narrative piece on the flood of the same year that hit the Netherlands. This new work, divided over two 3"CDs seems to have less of a conceptual edge to it, or at least less obvious. The first CD is has one piece called 'Water Torture' and the second has two pieces 'Heaven' and 'Hell'. Important for the The [Law-rah] Collective is the use of voices, especially female. Not singing, but reciting text, poetry or words. What they are about is not really important I think, since they are embedded strongly in the music. The music itself is created through analogue synthesizers and sound effects and have quite a strong ambient industrial character. Not 'easy' background wallpaper ambient music, but one of a more unsettling kind. Very nice. Packed in a 7" sleeve with die cut. No doubt the owner of Spectre Records has good connection to a fine printer. (FdW)

and yes, available through your preferred mailorder, or through the ant-zen mailorder, or through spectre or through myself :-) U.S. intereted people might want to contact soleimoon, it's in their catalog.
