In 1966 after hearing the harp on a Bob Dylan record, I purchased my first harp. That instrument held a surprising and unbelievable magic for me that thankfully has developed and remains today.

To be a teenager in the sixty's was amazing! It was an extraordinary time in general, but especially for music. My earliest harp influences were Canned Heat, and Magic Dick. I am in love with their work and so many other great harp players as well.

I quickly realized that with my "ear" if I kept listening to harp players, I would pick up Their riffs. Not that there's anything wrong sounding like, and learning from anyone you admire, respect and appreciate, but I decided I wanted to keep the door to my expressing whatever may shine through My spirit "open" to personal growth and creativity. These feelings led me to a philosophy of "harp player self imposed seclusion." At the same time, I did however, open myself to all "other" instrumentalists as my mentors. So, as far as my harp goes, "Sounds Like" is anyone's best guess. I really don't know.

To this day, although I hear, enjoy and appreciate other harp players I am exposed to past and present, I try to avoid learning their riffs. I like finding my own if that is indeed a possibility. Music is a most shared event, and originality is truly questionable as there are only so many notes. Thankfully, there are many combinations and factors from which to choose.

It is easy to get stuck in repetition when you find something that works. Keeping the music fresh can be challenging. It is exciting to find new riff's. I guess whatever I've etched for myself works for me, and may or may not work for others. Everyone finds their own path. There is no right or wrong way, just what works for each individual. As long as one learns and enjoys, I think it's all good. Total gratitude and respect to all the musicians I've ever played with.

Thankfully I live in a place that affords me to make such choices. Thanks America for the freedoms we still manage to retain.

After observing this government over the recent past several years, I do question just how long several of our freedoms will remain. They seem to be quickly eroding, but that's another can of worms.

Vocally, people often liken my blues to Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Bessie Smith, Etta James, Koko Taylor, Susan Tedischi, and the jazz to Billie Holiday, and Ella, although I rarely hear the likeness myself. I have no clue, I am not really listening to hear who I sound like, I just want to insure the quality of my vocals to the best of my abilities. I just sing what moves me, in hopes that I am not alone in feeling whatever the music denotes. I appreciate and am thankful to be able to learn, sing and play, and most of all, share music. I love respect and appreciate all the great musicians that came before me, and who are currently out there. To all the music lovers and appreciaters, check this out: If it weren't for you to share and feel this music with, for me, it would Never be the complete experience it is. You are the notes that make my songs sing! I love you! ~O~
