Home is where the heart is so when we arrived from our extensive summer travels we stretched our legs, regrouped, and got ready to record. Ideas had been floating around in all our heads but nostalgia got the best of us and we decided to re-record four songs off our first full lenght, Perils of the Polkadotapotamus. The songs are:

Every so often, you walk into a club and are genuinely surprised—pleasantly, that is—by the opening band. That was the case when I managed to catch the last few minutes of a set by Bows and Arrows a few weeks ago. I was at The End to see touring blog sensationsThe Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but left more intrigued by the first band of the night. I went home and looked them up, only to be pleasantly surprised once again to learn they're from Nashville. (Four of the five members currently attend MTSU.)

With a fetching mix of artistry and chemistry, atmosphere and offhanded charm, Bows and Arrows have created one of the year's most intriguing local releases. 1010 Eaton Street, recorded by the band over the past two years, shows a young group already in command of its sound and surprisingly assured in its writing.

Bows and Arrows take many of their cues from the lineage that stars with the Velvet Underground, goes through Galaxie 500 and continues into the present, landing somewhere in the vicinity of Belle & Sebastian or Camera Obscura. Like many bands of their ilk, B & A are writing, to some degree, in a parallel universe of the 1960s, in which whirring organs and bright, reverb-tinged guitars make the building blocks of a good pop song, Phil Spector never becomes creepy and a charmingly ramshackle approach is the order of the day.

For all their recognizable touchstones, Bows and Arrows manage to monogram inherited sensibilities with their own initials by way of a savvy sense of arrangement. The band can go from shoegaze to power pop at the drop of a kick-drum pedal, and their songs are as cleverly put together as they are effortlessly charming. "I Spent My Nights Awake," opens with a crisp, quickly-strummed guitar that takes a moment to tip its cap to Johnny Marr before sending the band into a jaunty dance beat. A softly sung verse gives way to a surging, space rock-inspired chorus that trades overwrought melisma for a soaring, echoing guitar line. From Mod rave-up to space jam and back again, "I Spent My Nights" showcases the band's versatility.

"Christmas Song" carries traces of Galaxie 500's "Listen, the Snow Is Falling" and Spent's "Brewster Station," and builds meticulously through softly sung verses and gently strummed guitar, adding glockenspiel, vocal harmony and an undertow of drums until a false ending gives way to the arresting conclusion—a heavy-footed waltz-time crescendo filled with crisscrossing guitars and droning synth. And while much of the playing and singing on 1010 Eaton is purposefully loose, Bows and Arrows are plenty precise when they need to be. Album closer "Burn It" shows off the band's post-rock chops with a counterintuitive ending that takes an off-kilter time signature and turns it into a thrilling car-chase of a coda.

When they take the stage at The End on Monday night, Bows and Arrows will be the first of four bands—with the names of national touring acts on the marquee—but don't be surprised if they steal the show.

I can't sleep because I can't stop thinking about how this summer was awesome. Tour was awesome. I don't really know what else to say other than that, we really had a blast meeting awesome people and playing in places we never played. My only regret is that I feel like I should have savored the moments more because looking back at the high points makes me wish I was on the road again.

Karl, Dylan, Savannah, Ethan, Ben, and everyone in Southport, you are the craziest, nicest people we have ever met! I feel like Southport is this little haven beach town safe from worries of the real world. Little Fury Things, you guys have heart. Swimming in the ocean in the rain is the only way to do it. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU PEOPLE AGAIN!

Dean and Randy, thanks so much for letting us open for you guys again! Atlanta was a crazy experience and you guys helped make a dream come true... again! Bradford, you are the sweetest guy ever, and Lockett thanks for hanging out with us!

Coming home was really good, but now I miss playing shows! We are working really hard on new songs and we want to have a new album out sometime next year, no point in rushing it. Thanks again, can't wait for next time!
