Andrew's Bar turns 1
Category: Music

6-1-07..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Andrew's Bar in ypsi had one helluva killer bash for their 1st birthday. I was asked to run sound for the show, which had 4 DJ's in the newly opened backyard, a bunch of free food, and 5, yes count 'em, 5 bands!!!

The Minor Planets have a cool indie pop sound with 2 guitars and keys backed by 2 men and a woman on the mics. Kind of a fiesty and infectious bouncy sound that was an appropriate way to open the show. The Minor Planets are a fun band to see.

Bear Mountain Picnic came 2nd. They have a Sonic Youth meets Dinosaur Jr thing going on with their music. Antsy guitars and angst ridden twin vocals make for a slacker drop-out on uppers kind of thing going on with the music. One of the band members gave me a demo which i keep spinning in the car non-stop. The first track reminds me of that old  Cheap Trick song where he says "Mommy's alright...Daddy's alright...they just seem a little wierd"

Tone & Niche jumped up on stage next. As always, T&N delivered a tight knit set immaculately executed. Everyone in the house was jumping as the band delivered "Rust", "Broken Heated Army" and "What I would've done for You" as well as a new song fro their recent studio sessions.

Mahoney hit the stage with a fury as the bar filled to capacity. They played their asses off and the audience seemed to know every last song. Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" drove the people into a frenzy. Even when the PA system cut out periodically, it was almost irrelevant since everyone in the bar was singing along at the top of their lungs. It's kind of creepy that this song has embedded itself into so many people's brains so deeply in a way that Neil himself would be jealous of. Then "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi proved to be the high point of the nite. Drummer Chris stepped out from behind the set to take vocals on the song's intro. "...I'm sorry.... it's just so emotional!" he paused and choked back the tears before they blew out our eardrums with the rocking part of the song.

The 77's came out and closed the show with a high energy set of  their sludgy Detroit swamp blues interpretation of what Rock n Roll is all about. They slipped in a new song and a cover or two and basically just delivered a true dirty 77's style set to finish off a perfect ypsi party nite.

too much fuckin' fun in Lansing

I made a little trip to  Lansing to check out Mac's Bar. A lot of really good bands are making it a priority to book at Mac's these days, so i had to go find out for myself what the deal is. When i walked in, the 77's had just started their set and were getting plenty of response from the early crowd. They threw in all their best songs, and a good cover of the Cramps' "New Kind of Kick", along with a new song fresh out of the studio. With a cool Day-Glow graffitti tag mural as backdrop, the 77's laid out a rambunctious set that put the smack down on the  wimpy P.A. system @ Mac's...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The Hat Madder took over the stage next. Over-caffeinated Hi-Octane pure rock energy armed with 2 synthesizers,  a BOSS DR Sample, and an army of stomp boxes meant these boys came to party. With a fill-in drummer (due to a broken leg) and plenty of attitude they won over the crowd effortlessly as they tried their best to cause permanent hearing loss and warp our minds.

SikSik Nation used the 3rd slot to show the city of Lansing a whole new definition of cool. The trio from Ann Arbor had the attention of everyone in the house for the whole set, and didnt let up the entire time. The sound is sort of  Black Rebel Motorcycle Club mixed with a little Jim Morrison, a little Mark Lannegan (Screaming Trees) and a penchant for really cool black boots. After doing their best to give the people more show than the $5 cover paid for, the band passed out free copies of their new 4 song EP recorded by Jim Diamond, and joined the guys from the 77's for tallboy PBR's at the back of the bar. These 3 down to earth cats are about to be the next big thing out of Michigan, yet they dont act like rockstars when they step off the stage.

Lansing's own The Royal Affairs finished off the nite by doing their best to blow the roof off the bar. People just went over the edge when the band took the stage. They came out guns a-blazin' and didnt stop until the lights came on. The frontman has this perfect lunatic rock n roll swagger going on.... the guitarist looked like Elvis Costello's little brother on a meth binge...the drummer was like a one man re-enactment of World War III... the whole band was drenched in sweat by the end of the 2nd song.... The Royal Affairs are clearly the hometown favorite in Lansing for a reason.

My little trip to Lansing was well worth the journey. I found 4 of the best bands i have heard in a long time, met some really cool cats from each of the bands, got some great pics of the bands, and drank a lot of free beers while doing what i love best.

drunken interiew @5am: the 77's

at a recent show in Ypsilanti, i ran into Alex King, drummer for one of my all time favorite bands: the 77's. we hung out watching the show and drinking beers and discussing the bands playing this show, when he invited us back to the Barn House for some after hours beers and a smoke. ..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We made it to the Barn House safely, and gathered around the kitchen table with Kyle Kipp, the singer of the 77's. PBR's and smokes passed around the table while i shot video of Al playing some new material on acoustic guitar, and our conspiring to send our perky hippie-chick upstairs to kick Kyle's roommate Jesse Tack(front man forEugene&Rusty) out of bed to come downstairs for some beers and music.

Jesse came down and smiled at us all bleary-eyed, and had one beer before retreating back to bed at the first opportunity that our drunken eyes weren't on him. i shot some footage of Al playing

"Bullet" by the Misfits and more hashing out of the new song for the cd in progress. i whipped out the digital recorder and cracke a fresh beer and made myself comfortable for the interview

Analog Mutant: so what do you guys have going on with the album?

Kyle Kipp: well, we're recording our next record, we're going to take more time on it, and make it sound better...we're recording it at the El Ojo Studios at the Dirty K Ranch

Analog Mutant: so what's the deal with this album?... what are the tracks?... what are they about?

Al King: they're all really heartfelt, pure rock n roll tracks. for the most part they all come from our experiences. like one of our newer songs "They All Brought Knives" was based on one of the shows we played in Hamtramck at the Painted Lady... the whole shady scene of it....cruisin' in the back alley and showing up late and tons of freaks and transvestites out there, and people with knives and these mustaches...

Kyle Kipp: ...and we all left in the middle of the headlining set, just throwing shit out because we wanted to head back for the after party in Ypsi.... do you remember? MT-TV was the band headlining ...

Analog Mutant: (falls on floor laughing)

Kyle Kipp: ...they had all these stacks of amps like they were Iron Maiden or something..they were all women except they had a dude drummer i think... the bass player had one of those little headless basses...

Analog Mutant: how many songs are going to end up on this cd?

Kyle Kipp: 7, 8. maybe 9. not all of them new

Al King: we're going to re-record the "Don't Nothing Hurt" song. we are eventually going to re-record "Never Stop Drinking" but we're in the process of pretty much just the new ones that we're recording...probably about 3 re-records and the rest are going to be new ones... for  "They All Brought Knives" we did a real lo-fi thing off a practice session for that song, that's the one we have on our website...but we're going to do a full on killer studio version of that song, minus all the rigamarole at the begining...its kind of a cool song that i think has a Rolling Stones influence or a CCR influence to it...with a modern vibe to it

Analog Mutant: is this going to be a total indie release?

Kyle Kipp: yeah. we're going to pool in all of our resources, get all our friends in on the process adding everything from harmonica or keyboards...

Al King: we're trying for organs, B3, shakers...we're looking for a lot of outside influences

Kyle Kipp: and we're bringing in better ears on the post-production process to make it all sound as good as possible...i'd like to commision some artists to do the layout and designs for the sleeve...we want to bring in people from the community to help us out

Al King: when it's finished i think we're trying to market it and shop it for a demo for a distribution deal...

Kyle Kipp: there are a few labels we have our eyes on that might be able to do something for us

Al King: we're trying to take it all to the next level, get more shows, more exposure and see where it all goes...

Analog Mutant: who is going to be on the cd?

Al King: i'd like to ask Jesse (Eugene & Rusty)... he's a helluva musician and i really like his writing style and i'd like for him to help out in any way . we really respect him and value his help.

Kyle Kipp: we want someone on organ..

Al King: i'd like to ask my dad to help us out. he plays B3. he said we sucked but i'm going to try to convince him otherwise

Analog Mutant: why would he say that?!?!?

Kyle Kipp:he's an old school musician

Al King: he's like a real hard ass! he's been playing around for years... he owns King's Keyboard House up in Ann Arbor...played in a bunch of bands, been on some records, done stuff for Gordie Howe, stuff for the Red Wings, old Bob Seger, a song for Super Bowl 40, , "Rocking in the BigHouse" for U of M... he's a big inspiration of mine, but he's a real hard ass too! when i was in LA in a band called Kill City Affair, he came and heard us... told me "you guys are too loud!" but he had some good constructive criticism for us...he drives a hard bargain but we'd love to have him play some B3 and i think i'm getting him to come around, and to come around on a more personal level too...it'll be good though since he is like the most insane B3 player i've ever heard, he's like a doctor on that thing

Analog Mutant: what about you Kyle? why'd you become a musician?

Kyle Kipp: (shrugs) ...i just always wanted to play guitar... so i started playing when i was like 10. my mom always had a guitar in the closet...there was always music in the house...my parents always played different instruments when they were young, but it never really rubbed off on my brother or i for some reason...my dad played bagpipe in a  band...mom was into violin when she was a kid

Analog Mutant: so how did you guys meet up?

Kyle Kipp: i put up like 2 or 3 flyers around Ann Arbor looking for a drummer, a few days later Al called and the 2 of us jammed at my place and we hit it off from there...and then he brought in Caleb

Al King: i worked with him at this rock n roll camp called Day Jams...we teach kids how to form bands, i'm an instructor up there... it's like School of Rock but real life... and the kid from School of Rock actually took lessons there, playing guitar, attending Day Jams

Analog Mutant: what made you want to be in a band? or become musicans in the first place?

Al King: i've got a lot of roots in music... my uncle played in a band called Destroy All Monsters with Ron Ashton from the Stooges and Mike Davis, and Niagra was the singer... i learned how to play in the rehearsal studio during Destroy All Monsters...Ron Ashton was there when i was playing my first drum set at age 4 with my uncle ...i had a big Stooges influence in my life, had the records when i was like 4... i basically grew up singing "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog" before i could say my ABC's... then my parents divorced and i was on the west coast.... i was doing a lot of cool things out there... playing the Warped Tour for like 8 shows when i was 17 with the punk ska band i was in...i played some really cool shows while living in LA for about 5 years...the Whisky, the House of Blues, the Roxy

Analog Mutant: who are some the better bands that you've played shows with?

Al King: all these southeastern Michigan bands are great... for instance, The Hard Lessons are probably the biggest band we've played with..

Kyle Kipp: ..they're top-notch...but a couple local bands we've played with that i think are pretty cool, SikSik Nation from Ann Arbor, Royal Affairs from Lansing are really fucking cool and they're going to go somewhere...

Al King: Eugene&Rusty has a sweet sound..

Kyle Kipp: of course! Jesse's band is a real party band, real feel good shit. not like all serious, just real fun...that's what's so cool about it...and all the girls really get into it too... they don't take themselves too seriously like most of the bands we play with.

Al King: personally i like Satin Peaches, i caught them at the Metro Times Blowout...they have a mind blowing set really...real cool, a real Detroit-ness about them...they're like the Beatles or Oasis type brit-pop but with a crazy guitar sound, the guy has all these pedals and he's smashing them with his hand making all this crazy sound...hitting the Big Muff with his hand and pulling the whammy bar out of his guitar and basically breaking it off the guitar...

by this time the sun was starting to come up and our perky hippie-chick wasn't so perky anymore, laying on the couch kind of half talking in her sleep... so i thanked the boys for the interview and gathered up my gear and wandered off for in the search of some breakfast and more beers to wash it down with

These are very sharp and very fun pics from the Devil Elvis show we played a week ago.

Everyone there, including the musicians, had a great time, as the photos depict.

Enjoy.

And, again, many thanks to Amanda Zee and her top shelf photo skills.

see you this Saturday at the Blind Pig as the 77s rock with Mazinga and Cult Heroes.

    Ahoy-hoy!

the 77s have been spacing out their shows a bit more the past few months in the "less-is-more" manner.
But, fear not, the scallywags of the 77s still yield some great rock for ya'll.

First and foremost -
Al King and KK Dirty Money from the 77s will be joining their comrades Fire Box (from Mazinga and Powertrane) and Devil Elvis (Chops from Wound) on stage this coming Saturday, July 12 in celebration of the Ypsilanti Elvis Fest Weekend performing as Devil Elvis and the Lesser Demons. The show takes place at TC's Speakeasy starting at 10pm.
Come check out what all the commotion is about. Devil Elvis and the Lesser Demons are a true Ypsi/Arbor super group that will bring a super charged rock and roll punch to classic Elvis tunes as well as a few other hot numbers.
Joining Devil Elvis on stage are the bands The Hotness, Dirt Road Logic, and Subourbon Son. This show is not to miss.
Devil Elvis will be unveiling a few new tunes, too, that will surely rip your face off.

The 77s will then make a mid-summer appearance at the Blind Pig on Saturday, July 26 with the Cult Heroes and Mazinga.
Check them shits out, it'll blow you away.

In other news, the band entitled Las Drogas:
KK Dirty Money's rockabilly/garage/blues duo project with fellow 77s band mate, Casey Jones, will be playing Port Huron's Boat Night on Friday, July 10 with Subourbon Son and Shotgun Wedding (the Sights' side project). This is a fun time, it's like the Mardi Gras of Port Huron; a truly stumbling drunk time. The show takes place in the street in front of Black Beard Tattoo Parlour.

And, of course, Al King (with his pal Box) keeps rockin' many shows with Powertrane this summer (they just completed a national tour over the past month) as well as the formidable Mazinga.

Also, keep an ear out for the Jones Brothers' (aka Casey Jones and Joe Jones of the 77s) other band, Deadringer. This psychobilly concoction will seep into your skin and cause peculiar behavior...

that's the latest update from the 77s' camp.
There is always plenty of rock to be had by these grizzled rockers.

    Hey, there, good buddies!

Just wanted to drop a line letting everyone know that both the 77s and Devil Elvis will be under one roof for one night playing one show together.

Come out to TC's Speakeasy tomorrow, Friday, February 29 at 10 pm in downtown Ypsilanti on Michigan Ave to catch both bands.

KK and Alex King of The 77s return with two new members (the Jones Brothers, of Stonewall Saints fame, on guitar and bass). We're proud to blast the crowd with maximum guitar wattage.

The 77s will be followed by Devil Elvis, a local supergroup composed of Chops (from Wound), Box and Al King (both from Mazinga and Powertrane), and KK Dirty Money (the 77s). Devil Elvis is a demonic reincarnation of The King's music but supercharged with extra punk and rock fury. Check it out, as the band was specially requested for John's birthday party, taking place at TC's that night.

take care and see you at the RAWK!

Thursday, January 17, 2008
the 77s finished off their last two shows with bassist K-Lab Fiser the weekend of Halloween '07. It was a great and memorable weekend: the Friday playing as the Devil Elvis band, rocking TC's Speakeasy with 77s' styled Elvis and rockabilly numbers and sharing the stage with Horse Cave Trio; then the Saturday night blowing up the Fortress of Solid Dudes until the police came and shined their flashlights in our faces in response to a noise complaint by us (we tried starting up again after they left, but they promptly returned and threatened to lock us all up, practically starting a riot among the disgruntled Ypsi punks).
As drummer Alex King puts it: "In the end, we didn't get to play with K-Lab much at all before his move to Denver. Nevertheless, the 77$ will be playing with a new bass player this week. Stay tuned for furture details!!"
K-Lab moved to Denver this week, after burning a brief but successful stint as drummer for the prog-metal band Girl Think Sexy.
Just as K-Lab moves out, the new 77s move in as we unveil the Stonewall Saints boys as our new compatriots in rocking the stage (Casey Jones on guitar and Joe on bass).
We'll be tearing up the Neutral Zone this Saturday, January 19 with Mazinga, SOS, and Actual Birds.
Look out Ann Arbor, we're back.

Let's give a hand to the one and only Alex King. The 77s are honored to share the rock with him as he spreads his skills among the rich Detroit/Ann Arbor rock scene.
Our man, Al-pal, not only hits it with the 77s, but he's holding down the perc for such illustrious bands as Mazinga (one of KK's all-time favorite local acts), Scott Morgan's Powertrane (http://www.realdetroitweekly.com/article_3585.shtml), and the legendary Detroiter Mitch Rider.
Scott Morgan rubbed elbows with the guys in The Stooges as well as the MC5 and has performed in Sonic's Rendezvous and the Rationals. And, what can you say about Mitch Rider other than he put Detroit garage rock on the map back in the 60's.
The 77s' Alex King is making new history and we support him 100%.
Rock On!

PS - come see the 77s rock the stage with Mazinga this Saturday, Jan 19 at Ann Arbor's the Neutral Zone.
