Generally I'm not too much into those days where you "have to" be nice to your mama or your love. Everyday should be special, right? Anyway, I've meant to do a romantic mix in a long time, but never managed to get in the mood. Today, it's a bit different. Lots of superb soul music came in lately (think Menahan Street Band, Raphael Saadiq), so last sunday I decided to make it into a nice 80min soundtrack. Soul, jazz, latin, funk... Definitely some soulful music to share in tender moments.

Dedicated to all lovers and special someones.

Download it now and here.

About our party next friday at Cafe Bota Stereo, you know we at Cheeba Cheeba are real promo machines. Next to a flyer all about attitude, we even made a ringtone for you to customize your phone, and look good when a homie calls you up. Ok, don't take all this too seriously. It's all about fun here, so do what you gotta do !

Get the ringtone HERE (right-click & save).
It's in mp3 format, so just upload it into your phone, and set it as your default ringtone.

As Vic aka J-to-the-C was doing his hip-to-the-hop-and-you-don't-stop on Lefto's De Hop radio show yesterday, he just did a Cheeba Cheeba radio add for some live promo action. Plain hilarious. Check it HERE (right-click & save) and listen to JC's mad show HERE (available one week).

See you on friday,
The Cheeba Brothers (Funky Bompa, Vic & Lloyd).

Check down the page for a link to the Santo Domingo Digging mix I did this week, featuring 15 of my favorite records I brought back from the Caraib region. You'll find an extended tracklist down there too. Here are the covers already.

Last summer I had the chance to spend a few weeks in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (DR). To make a long story short, I went for a year to Santo Domingo as an exchange student 10 years ago. Now I have a second family, a Dominican one, which I visit on regular digging trips back there. I quickly learned the language (Spanish), the culture, the dances and of course the music. Let's start with some pics of Santo Domingo, DR's capital. These were taken close to the colonial part of the city, which is being "rehabilitated" for the moment.

Being part of the large Antilles, in the Caraib region, DR has a tropical climate. That is not a good point regarding conservation of the precious vinyl. You might hear that in the mix joining this post, but the music is worth it...

Often, record are sold right on the streets. Not many dealers are to be found,
but among the years I managed to know the ones still carrying the "long plays". Private collectors are always a good treat too.

Heat, sweat, moldy record covers, bugs all over the place... Sometimes a dirty job, that resulted this time in a nice 200+ LPs and a handfull 45s to get home.

DR is especially known for it's superb beaches. Going inside the country is just beautiful too. The cooler temperatures and exuberant tropical vegetation, hosting a typical dominican lifestyle, makes it worth checking out.

EXTENDED TRACKLIST

00:00 Jimmy Spleer - Super Rhyme's Rap (Dazz Records 1980)
I just used the intro of this early hiphop classic sampling Vaughn Mason's dancefloor classic, which I found in the very same cover. DJs were always there.

00:49 Vaughn Mason - Bounce, rock, skate, roll pt2 (Brunswick 1979)
The track I was just talking about. Great break.

03:21 Salsoul Orchestra - Journey to Phoebus (Salsoul 1977)
Big band disco breaks. Made in US. In my opinion most of the Salsoul Orchestra's albums are one-trackers, so be careful...

07:53 The Impact Of Brass - So far so good (Motown 1971)
The cover shows a bunch of white guys, posing with attitude. Happens to be signed to Motown. The prominent horns make it a real heavy soul track.

11:30 Willie Rosario & Orchestra - Consorte (Inca 1977)
Oldschool salsa meets jazz with a powerful dancefloor attraction. Make it hot.

14:22 Saoco - Siempre sere guajiro (Mericana 1976)
I've always the slow melody of the guajira, a typical cuban rhythm. NYC had Saoco back then to remember how good this stuff sounds.

19:48 Los Virtuosos - Montuno viene (Discolor 1977)
Another great salsa track from Cuco Valoy's Virtuosos. Couldn't find a clean copy of this...

23:49 Carmen Rivero - Cumbia, cumbiamba (Caytronics)
Colombia's national dance, the cumbia, is always nice on dancefloors. No info is to be found about composer Carmen Rivero, except he got Linda Vera doing the vocals. Favorite cumbia record for sure.

26:28 Linda Vera - La yerba santa (Discos Columbia)
Same singer, incredible voice. I said the previous track was my favorite. Here's a challenger, even if the rest of the album doesn't well.  Superheavy cumbia though...

29:01 Indio Bravo - Celos (Zuni)
Back to Dominican Republic with this perico ripao, ancester of the merengue. It's uptempo rhythm with accordion and scraping percussion makes it another favorite on the dancefloor.

31:30 O.V. Wright - Born all over (Back Beat 1971)
Lost soul from the States. Who would think such a rarity would end up on the streets of Sto Dgo. Superb album from start to finish.

34:36 Barrabas - Chico (RCA 1972)
I had this record, but didn't notice this incredible track until finding it back. Soul meets rock, slow and powerful.

38:17 Leon Thomas - Shape your mind to die (Flying Dutchman 1972)
My favorite jazz record from the bunch. Again superb album from start to finish. Leon Thomas' voice, also to be found on Pharaoh Sanders' records, is just perfect.

43:24 Curtis Mayfield - We the people (Curtom 1971)
Classic soul from The Man. Another start-to-finish gem. The funky theme in the middle comes just right.

49:21 Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino - Cuba linda (Mericana/Salsoul 1975)
We end the trip with a great latin-jazz burner. The name of the band says it all.

Check all the covers on the top of this post.

Essential recordings (or not) I'm trippin to for the moment :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOVEMBER 2007

It's been a while since I've posted a new chart in here. I've been working and travelling so much. So much good stuff to talk about... Check out the SONOTON mixes, as I always try to include the latest stuff I'm digging. Here's a first selection from the top of my head :

> SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS - 100 days 100 nights (Daptone Records 2007) LP
My favorite live act came back to Belgium with a new album and a fantastic show. The Dap-kings backed up for Amy Winehouse, if I understood right, which gave them mainstream exposure. They definitely deserve it. But Sharon Jones is still my favorite.

> CHARLES BRADLEY & THE MENAHAN STREET BAND - This world (Dunham 2007) 7"
Another superb soul tune from the Daptone crew. The Menahan Street Band is led by Sharon Jones & Budos Band guitarist Tommy TNT. Do not miss this if you like soulful horns and some raw singing.

More soon...

JULY 2007

Here's a little list of records I've bought lately and just keep playing over and over and over and over and over again.

> NOSTALGIA 77 - Everything under the sun (Tru Thoughts 2007) limited LP
Incredible new album from the UK. Jazz at it's best. Records you can listen to from start to finish often are future classics. And this one's perfect all the way !

> TUOMO - My thing (Jupiter 2007) LP
Soul from Finland. Close your eyes, and you wouldn't believe it wasn't recorded by Motown some 30 years ago... Perfect for the summer. Thanx to Lost In Music Pit for the tip !

> HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE - War b/w Mercury (HBE 2007) 10"
You might have checked out the video on my frontpage. Great full sound on 10" vinyl.

> SOUL SIDES (Zealous 2006) 2LP compilation
Compiled by Oliver Wang (autor of the excellent Soul Sides blog). Great great tracks. A perfect compilation to introduce you (or your friends) to the power of soul...

> COLOMBIA - The Golden Age Of Discos Fuentes (Soundway 2007) 2LP Compilation
I've talked about the 7", released as a teaser for this comp. So here's the big stuff : Colombia's finest and hardest cumbias, descargas, psych afro-funk and more crazyness from the Discos Fuentes label. Copies just fly out, so be fast and get yours before it's too late ! Soundway also released the Panama! compilation last year.

> ORGONE - The duck gravy (Ubiquity 2007) 7"
Another nice 7" cut for their european tour, even if I haven't seen them around (??). Heavy funk from those Cali guys.

> MICHAEL GARRICK TRIO - Moon (Trunk Records 2007) LP
Limited reissue of this fantastic british jazz. Originally released as a private pressing mini-album in 1964, let's thank Mr Jonny Trunk for doing such a nice job.

> COOKIN ON 3 BURNERS - Cook It / Settle the Score (Freestyle 2007) 7"
"Settle the Score" is my cut right here, featuring Kylie Auldist on vocals. Damn !

Don't forget to check out my radioshow, including lots of these goodies of course. Download them here.
That's it for now !

Off the record(s), buddy Pierre from Paris just started Babelio. It's a new site for booklovers, to share and discuss their reads and tastes. Let a funny video tell you what it's all about.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAY 2007

> THE SWEET VANDALS (Funkorama/Unique 2007) LP
The funk scene is growing in Europe, and Spain is definitely in the game with the Sweet Vandals. Great singing, superb oldschool sound. If you like Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, this is something for you ! Check their myspace for a quick listen.

> LACK OF AFRO – Roderigo (Freestyle 2007)
As featured on the first Sonoton show, Lack of Afro hits hard with this first 45 on Freestyle. The B-side contains a remix by Natural Self. The other work by Lack of Afro is heavy too, so don't sleep !

> MR JIM & THE RHYTHM MACHINE – Do the hot pants b/w Midnight in Madrid (Wizdom 1984)
Flea markets are drying up, but once in a while good surprises are to be found. Despite the title, the A-side is not funky at all. On the B-side, Mr Jim (on keysboards, I assume) plays a cool and straight instrumental jazz track with this typical 60s sound. I just love it.

> THE BOOGOOS – Bubbles pt.1-2 (Tramp 2007)
Here's a piece of vinyl brought to you by Tobias Kirmayer (liens myspace/trampsrecords) himself. Tramp Records releases quality funk records, and the latest release confirms the statement. On this 45 the Boogoos play some uptempo happy funk with brass band horns. Hot !

> PHIRPO Y SUS CARIBES – Comencemos b/w LITO BARRIENTOS Y SU ORQUESTA – Cumbia en do menor (Soundway 2007)
Another top 45 from Soundway, taken from a compilation about Colombian treasures. Those are a must-have for any exotic funk lover. On the A-side, hirpo covers Fela Kuti's "Let's start", bustin' loose on fuzzy guitars and mad horns. The B-side features an excellent and heavy cumbia (colombia's folklore music/dance). Perfect pressing. Not to be missed !

> THIEVES OF TIMES - The time machine / The beat suite (phase 1-2-3) (Other Worlds 2005)
Coming from our UK fellas, the A-side of this 12" is a very nice and laidback track. The B-side is more dancefloor-oriented. Good stuff !

> AFTER HOURS – Collected, inspected & injected part 4 (2006) mix-cd
The Antwerp-based kings of digging bless us with another volume of their infamous serie. As usual, the beats are slow and heavy. Library breaks, soundtracks, heavy soul, African sounds… it all sounds great. The artwork by Sozyone makes it just beautiful. Get this.

> JAKE ONE – Inner Soul (2005) mix-cd
Jake One, producer for De La Soul and G-Unit, put together a mix of superb soul tracks taken from rare library records, rare groove, 45s etc. The mix is a little rough, but the quality is definitely in there… Check him out here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MARCH 2007

Things are going way too fast. We're almost in april ! Things will be updated soon, promise...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JANUARY 2007

No recordings for january, but two bands :

> LA RUE DES PECHERIES
Jazz-funk-beatbox band with percussion, rhodes piano, keyboard scratching and a three-piece horn section. They've got this nice laidback vibe, with nice bridges to dub rhythms, Fat Freddy's Drop style. Recommended !

> LA CHIVA
South-american latin-afro-funk combo. Los Jaivas (Chile) meets Nico Gomez (Belgium)... Cool guys and good vibes, so don't miss!

I checked them out live this w-e in Brussels and was really impressed by the overall sound. Heavy rhythms, funky horns... that's what it's all about. A Funky Bompa recommendation !

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECEMBER 2006

> WILLIE ROSARIO - Calypso blues (Honest Jons 2006) 7"
Compiled on the excellent compilation "Boogaloo Pow Wow - Dancefloor Rendez-Vous In Young Nuyorica", this track makes it worth on its own. Willie Rosario sings on a stripped down bongo track, slowly building up to a superb boogaloo final.

> CASBAH 73 - JAZZ TRAVELS (Hitop 2006) compilation LP
Another superb compilation by collector-DJ Casbah 73 (Madrid). Some very sought-after tracks are selected for our greatest pleasure.

> ERNIE HAWKS & THE SOUL INVESTIGATORS - Soulful trip pt. 1&2 (Nite Club 2005) 7"
Heavy funk from Finland with this track released on Timmion's sub-label and produced by the enygmatic Didier (Didier's Sound Spectrum).

> SALAH RAGEB - EGYPT STRUT (Jazzman 2006) 7"
The title itself says it all. Funky jazz with an oriental touch, on an quality reissue label.

> PAVLOV & MISHKIN - Re-De-Troit (GAMM 2006) 12"
Cool rework of an ultra-classic sample. Everybody loves it !

> NOSTALGIA 77 w/ ALICE RUSSEL - 7 NATION ARMY (Ubiquity 2005) Compilation LP
Compiled some time ago on the Rewind! Vol. 4, this slowed down White Stripes cover really really does it...

> BAJKA - I CAN NO POET BE (Jazzman 2005) EP
This one isn't very new either, but who cares... Jazzman Gerald knows what he's doing by producing Bajka on his label. I discovered 6 months ago, singing live and backed by the Poets Of Rhythm (now doing jazz under the pseudo "Das Goldenes Zeitalter"). What a blast...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOVEMBER 2006

> 1984 - THERE'S A WRINKLE IN OUR TOWN (Tramp 2006) 7"
This slice of high energy heavy funk just get me pumped up. Perfect for the wake-up.

> EL MICHELS AFFAIR - C.R.E.A.M. (Truth & Soul 2006) 7"
Dopest instrumental cover from the Wu-tang classic. Thank you L. Michel.

> THE BROKEN KEYS - Slingshot pt. 1&2 (Tru Thoughts 2006) 7"
Tru Thoughts labelmates Nostalgia77 and Natural Self team up for a new project. This teaser here is just so heavy.

> PANAMA! compilation (Soundway 2006) LP
Essential stuff from Panama's 1965-1975 period, from equally essential label.

> NOSTALGIA 77 OCTET - The Impossible Equation (Tru Thoughts 2006) Limited LP
Makes me think of the UK jazz-rock scene back in the 70s, Ian Carr & Nucleus style... Get this while you can.
Nostalgia 77 will have a DJ-set in Brussels on december 9th at the Atelier 210, alongside Brussels finest funk DJs (Kwak, Brekbit and... myself ;). Don't miss...

> YATHA SIDHRA - A Meditation Mass (Gorilla Musik - 197?) Limited reissue LP
Another rare recording beautifully reissued. A german production combining progressive arrangements, phazing drums, electronics and indian influences. The album title says it all...

> EUGENE MC DANIELS - Outlaw (Atlantic 1970) LP
If you still don't know the man, here's a nice piece to start with...

> AME's "Donuts Sample Montage"
Afterhours homie mixes the originals from Dilla's latest opus. Absolutely necessary.

> CHARLIE MARIANO & THE CHRIS HINZE COMBINATION (Black Lion 1973) LP
Slow and heavy jazz to trip to after a looong day of work. That's something I like to do.

> SOIL & PIMPS SESSIONS (Brownswood 2006) 12"
Superb jazz from those japanese cats on Gilles Peterson's label. Some tracks to dance to, other to trip to. Recommended...

> FUJIYA & MIYAGI - Ankle Injuries (Tirk) 10"
UK krautrock-influenced leftfield disco (ahem...). Not the kind of music I usually listen to, but worth checking it out for sure.

That's it for the moment. Keep checking, as records come and go at a fast pace...

Feedback and suggestions are welcome !
