Hey Peoples,
It's been awhile...But I'm not gonna lie : Facebook is the new myspace ! Plus there is too many crazy peoples over here...Anyway, last month I was in NYC to make a special issue about Queens rappers.
Even tho a lot of people discouraged me I thought that this could be interesting. A borough with so much variety (For instance Fifty and Pharaohe Monch are both from Southside Jamaica Queens) and classic acts (from Run DMC, to LL, Tribe, Nas...) deserve an in-depth coverage.
Besides that, NY is supposed to be my "home" in the US. I've been there many times for holidays, I've got aunties and cousins, I know (= "we exchange mails" ) some efficient PR's and some excellent journalists... BUT I never been in NY for work purpose and as I 'll found out later there is a huge difference.
Even if ATL is the new Mecca of hip-hop, the industry of rap music is still a New york thing. All the majors and the "hip-hop medias" are concentrated there. Tha's why my speech ("Hi I'm writer for a french hip-hop magazine...") in NY was only agreed by a long stare that meant "And ?" LOL Even the brokest, unknown MC in NY is media and business savy and 'll harass you with questions before an interview ! The "others" after asking crazy things (like getting 500$ for an intw or to get the cover of the magazine...) just made me lost my time and sometimes my temper.
After 2 days of pure insanity I decided to just take everything. I finally managed to get Maino, Whoo Kid, Peter Rosenberg from Hot 97, DJ Envy, Kidz In The Hall, Marco Polo & Torae... I also had the chance to hang out with Big Noyd the whole evening and listened to his crazy Mobb deep and Queensbridge memories...So the magzine still looks good.
I'm not bitter at all, that's part of the game, but now I know that next time to get a piece of that damn Big Apple, I'll have to sharpen my teeth!
Peace,
S.

Hey Peoples, First I must admit that this Jeezy song's with the catchy and ignorant chorus won me. I can't help it. Btw Nas sounds awful ("She ain't a politician, honey's a pole-litician" please…) on this…But I disgress. The 5th November I was proudly walking around in the office with my Obama t-shirt (2XL with the face of Obama all over it) and one of my co-worker came to me with a devilish grin .- Why do u wear that t-shirt ?
- (Me, very surprised) Hum because that's the first black president…..
..- He's not your president ! Barack is an American. Your president is in France and by the way there are a lot of black presidents in Africa..
Mind you that she is writing for a hh magazine so she is supposed to be "open minded"…That day I didn't answer her. That level of "diplomatic-hate" just blown me away.
She knows that this is a revolution, but she acts like she didn't understand. This last month, I also had heated conversations with brothers who argue with me that « Obama ain't gonna do shit for Africa because he's an American ».
Woaw guys. Why are you so mad ? So to make things clear:
- I'm not a dreamer. I know that Obama ain't gonna change the whole world. Because A) that's not his mission and B) He's just an human.
- It's ok for me to wear a Michael Jordan's t-shirt but as soon as I wear Barack's face people start to get sensitive ? F…You!
- I truly believe that all black peoples (from Africa, to the west indies all way to the US) are related. So pardon me to be happy for my "cousins". Notice that you'll never hear white people dissing Australians or white South Africans. We black peoples are so quick to call ourselves "brothers" but we're the first to discriminate each others.
- Europeans need to stop hating on the States. Let's be honest : to put on charge an African American named Barack HUSSEIN Obama was a bold move.
- Africans need to stop the hate. Obama ain't supposed to do ish for us. He's an example, a symbol, a hope for a better world for our children and grand children.
Peace,
S.

Hey Peoples,
I never wanted to talk about this little boy "music". I just think that's a waste of energy. I prefer to use this space to talk about the music that I like. By the way, we need to keep in mind that Soulja boy's fans don't spend their time writing on forum how they dislike The Roots or Nas music !
But this is different. I've read here that this little boy in a way salute the slavery...
Here is an excerpt of the article :
"Last week in Atlanta, I got to interview Soulja Boy Tell Em. I found out just how young he really is. He was one of about ten rappers I interviewed in one day for my BET show, The Black Carpet. I decided it'd be fun to give all the rappers part of the Proust questionnaire. I thought it'd be a way to get beyond image and into who they really are. Most of the guys gave good, thoughtful, intelligent, sensitive answers. I asked Juelz Santana, "How would you like to die?" He said, "Loved." Then came Soulja Boy Tell Em. I asked him, "What historical figure do you most hate?" He was stumped. I said, "Others have said Hitler, bin Laden, the slave masters..." He said, "Oh wait! Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we'd still be in Africa." My jaw, at this point, was on the ground."We wouldn't be here," he continued, having no idea how far in it he'd stepped, "to get this ice and tattoos."
This can't be serious!!!!! I don't want to hear the "he is just a kid !" excuse : he's 18 years old ! he can probably use a laptop and Google!
THAT'S JUST A SHAME !
Peace,
S.

Hey Peoples, This morning I was "watching" Youtube (the best thing that ever happen to the net) and I remember about this particular song : Raw beat (produce by Marley Marl I guess) with a crazy James Brown sample + raw lyrics (now Intelligent Hoodlum is known as Tragedy Kadhafi) + a simple but efficient video. = Good Peace, S.

Hey Peoples, I was in LA for a week and it was hard. I already have been there twice. It was for basic planned interview (first for Black Eyed Peas and then for Big Snoop Dogg) but now it was different. I had to bring material for at least 75% of the magazine. In April I was in ATL for the same thing (big up to Calvin from the Big Oomp Camp) and it went well so I had no pressure at all. Like usual I had some serious contacts from Myspace (don't laugh most of your favourite producers or MC check their account or has someone dedicated to) and of course record companies. It can easily turn into a nightmare : if u only have 7 days in a city and most of ur contacts are delaying their interviews or don't answer their phone u don't feel good…Plus during that period Snoop was in Europe, Game was in NY, Cube was shooting a movie and a lot of artists were in Vegas for a fashion convention… Finally, I've met some big dogs like the really down to earth DJ Muggs, Mopreme Shakur (yes the older brother of our hero) and also the super humble, intelligent and friendly QDIII. Check this guy resume he is the Truth! I also had the chance to conversate (is that an English word?) with DJ Khalil, Focus and Bishop Lamont of the Aftermath "concentration camp"…been in 40 Glocc crib…went to a supa dupa backpacker show to talk with Evidence…Talked with the charming Yesi Ortiz a radio personality of Power 106 …ate some good burritos with DJ Felli Fell (he's a friendly dude : thanks to him I've made like 7 interviews the last day and he gave me the ctct of Too $hort ! ) …discovered Psycho Realm (Sic Jacken is the new B-Real …big up Tone Lopez!) …ate some Rosco Chicken & Waffles with Styliztik Jones…chilled late night in front of the Watts Tower with Young Bruh (an intelligent brother and by the way little brother of Kam) …started a business relationship with Damani of Dubb Union (more on that later I hope) … listened to Problem's snippets songs in his front yard in Compton…met Roscoe Umali (this Filipino brother is good), Hot Dollar and Krondon (check out the new Strong Arm Steady video) in a club…and recorded my last intw with DJ Warrior 2hours before leaving to LAX ! Anyway I really needed a big interview with an OG like DJ Quik, MC Eiht or WC but it's ok.
West west y'all! S.
