Hello again!
Not much of my early (20-something) college experience survived in memory form. I’m not sure why, but strangly one little strand of higher learning appeared today..."Where the wood fumes up and the watery, flickering rushes. I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration..." I think that the sunshine triggered a synapse. Yep, I dont know about you, but I am ready for spring!
Not much music in March, I am working on Harlequin Productions Intimate Apparel. Beautiful play about people...people who need people...people in corsets. Really there are corsets in this play and yours truly gets one of her very own. Intimate Apparel is playing til March 22. Pay what you can is this Saturday’s 3pm matinee!
One audience response: "To me, live theater becomes personal. If done well it creates an experience inside me and leaves a taste in my mouth. Harlequin’s Intimate Apparel production left me with the taste of rich, warm chocolate melting in my mouth." Yow!
The new CD Everyday Gifts is here(!), and it’s available at my website, and soon on CDbaby. David Rhys-Johnson played piano on this CD. The man can seriously tickle the ivory -- an accomplished talented musician he is. He was recently written up in The Weekly Volcano. Visit him at his website. And check out this article on him.
You can hear the two of us playing some music from EG this Saturday at the World Sacred Music Festival. We’ll be on the festival’s Stage 2 at 11:45 a.m. -- check out festival details and the full schedule at www.olysacredmusic.org
Mark you calendar for April 1, when Eddie Palmieri will be heating up SPSCC’s Minnaert Center, 8pm. This is not music for the tired backside, this is music for movin’. This world-renowned pianist’s musical career spans 50 years, and his discography contains more than 32 titles. His music combines jazz piano and instrumental solos with Latin rhythms. Palmieri, who also served as a bandleader for salsa and Latin jazz orchestras, has won nine Grammy Awards, including the first such award for best Latin album. In 2007, he won his 9th Grammy for Simpatico.
I mention this, because yours truly will be opening for Mr. Palmieri! I’ll be playing with with Steve Luceno on bass and Dr. David Joyner on piano. I am thrilled to share the stage with such a legendary luminary.
Oh yeah, there is also Jake’s Bar and Bistro coming up that same week, but more on that later. If you are really dying to know, see my calendar.
So that little poetic snippet released by my synapses? "The Enkindled Spring" by D.H. Lawrence (1916) Enjoy!
This spring as it comes bursts up in bonfires green, Wild puffing of emerald trees, and flame-filled bushes, Thorn-blossom lifting in wreaths of smoke between Where the wood fumes up and the watery, flickering rushes.
I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration Of green fires lit on the soil of the earth, this blaze Of growing, and sparks that puff in wild gyration, Faces of people streaming across my gaze.
And I, what fountain of fire am I among This leaping combustion of spring? My spirit is tossed About like a shadow buffeted in the throng Of flames, a shadow that’s gone astray, and is lost.
Springthinkingly yours, LaVon

. Thanks to everyone who came out for the recent show at Ben Moore's. Good crowd, and I heard rumor of good food as well. I always appreciate seeing familiar faces and seeing new ones as well.
My show there was part of the new jazz series at Ben Moore's -- great local musicians are heating it up. Support live music
I'm not doing many public shows for the month of December, most of them are private functions. But I invite you to Harlequin's new holiday show, Operation Stardust for a fabu evening of "boy meets girl, let's sing!" extravaganza. There you can see yours truly shuffle off to Buffalo, so to speak. Tickets are on sale at the Harlequin Theater box office in downtown Olympia. Or you can get tickets (and see me in a fabulous wig!) online at harlequinproductions.org
Have a grateful Thanksgiving! LaVon
P.S.: Even amid Operation Stardust, I am still accepting voice students. Call me to inquire: 360-259-1683.
P.P.S.: Remember that music makes a great holiday gift. Why not give your family, friends, and vague acquaintences the gift of swing in the form of the brand new Red & Ruby CD -- available on my website! Need convincing? Have a listen:
Red & Ruby: It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing

M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I ...never been there but I can spell it, which still gives lots of pleasure when it rolls off the lips. Red and Ruby are crossing the great Columbia (taking the bridge) to go to Mississippi. Misssissippi Pizza in Portland, that is.
The Mississippi Pizza Pub is located 3552 North Mississippi Ave., Portland, Oregon (503) 288-3231. Good food. Imaginative pizzas. Hearty salads. And for the brew-lovin' folk a healthy selection of microbrews. These folks love music, they got it 7 days a week. Gotta love that. Tell all of your Portland friend and family. Red and Ruby are on 6-8pm Mark your calendar, the R&R CD release party is September 22, at Traditions Cafe, downtown Olympia! Should be a rip-rorin', snort-causing night of fun. Tickets on sale now at Traditions and going fast.
Thanks to our friends, hosts, and venues in Hood River for a pleasant journey to that wonderful town nestled along the mighty Columbia. We also had fun playing recently at McMenamin's Olympic Club in Centralia.
My next vocal workshop is Thurs Sept 21 7:30-9. For those of you who attended previous workshop--we will do things a little differently. We will review vocal points in the first part of the workshop and we will have a group sing. Learn as you sing. Sing as you learn. These workshops are great fun and will fill up fast--limited to 12. $15. RSVP by email or call 360-259-1683.
Here's the full skinny: • Saturday Aug. 25, 6-8pm, Red & Ruby at Mississippi Pizza in Portland. • Friday Aug. 31 at 5:30, Red & Ruby provide tunes for "Happy Hour" at the Lacey Senior Center, with the theme "Hot August Night" -- this is open to the general public. • Thursday Sept. 6 from 11am to 2pm, Red & Ruby return to the Olympia Farmers Market for the last time this summer. • Saturday Sept. 15, Red & Ruby play as part of Ms. Kitty's Parlour at the Mission Theater in Portland OR. The show starts at 7pm and ends when it ends. • Thursday Sept. 21 at 7:30pm - Vocal workshop with LaVon (see details above). • And mark your calendar for the Red & Ruby CD Release Party at Traditions Cafe at 8pm on Saturday Sept. 22. • Friday Sept. 28 at 9:30, Red & Ruby head up the Peninsula to a show at the Water Street Brewery in Port Townsend.
For details of these and other shows, see my calendar.

This week --some new venues that I hope that you will come and enjoy. Tonight Red and Ruby will be at the Dockside Bistro on Olympia wharf. This wine bistro has a tantalizing menu to accompany your favorite vino. Nice atmosphere, nice menu and live music from R2. If I weren't working I would be there. A note to my single lady friends--it is great spot to come on your own-very friendly and comfortable.
Wednesday night in Seattle Red and Ruby will be opening for the one and only Miss Mamie Lavona the Exotic Mulatto & Her White Boy Band. If you like your ennui with some bite and bounce Miss Mamie will probably be able to accommodate you quite rightly. We will be on at 9pm, a pre-simmer to Miss Mamie's broil. Hope to see you there.
Making more ventures into the Seattle landscape as my alter ego LaVon (or is that Ruby or is it Col. Mustard...?) next week with Artu D'tou at the Triple Door Musiquarium. If you have not been to the Triple Door-- change your ways and make a go of it. On their mainstage they feature artists from all over the world--I have seen Hugh Masakela, Vusi Mahlasela, Gangbe Brass Band, and others and I have never been in a bad seat. The dinner, the music and the atmosphere is quite pleasurable. It feels like the hip club that everyone is invited to. Not to mention the aquarium that the Musiquarium lounge is named for, did i mention the giant aquarium? We will be there August 1, and there's no cover charge. Hope to see you there.
Here's what else is coming up: • Tuesday July 24 at 6pm, Red & Ruby are at Olympia's delightful new Dockside Bistro • Wednesday July 25 at 9pm, Red & Ruby do Seattle's Sunset Tavern, opening for Opening for Miss Mamie Lavona the Exotic Mulatto & Her White Boy Band (Actual band name! I kid you not!) [this show is not at the Tractor, though a certain PR lackey made that error in an earlier email] • Sunday July 29 at 5pm, Red & Ruby play at Cielo Blu Restaurant in Olympia • Wednesday August 1 at 9pm, LaVon's jazz combo plays the Musiquarium Lounge at The Triple Door in Seattle! • Thursday August 2 Red & Ruby play the Olympia Farmers Market 11am-2pm • Red & Ruby return to Hood River, Oregon August 2-5 for several shows and workshops • Tuesday August 14 Red & Ruby make their Centralia debut at McMenamin's Olympic Club, 7pm • And mark your calendar for the Red & Ruby CD Release Party at Traditions Cafe at 8pm on Saturday Sept. 22. • For details of these and other shows, see my calendar. • And be sure to tell your friends in Seattle about the upcoming shows up north!
I have cancelled this Thursday's vocal workshop. A lot of folks who wanted to attend are out of town and quite frankly the fact of summer has taken precedent--we will meet next month, I will email you soon with a dates for August and September. I hope that you will consider joining me for the vocal workshop, a fun and freeing atmosphere to just learn about your voice.
As usual thank you for your support, it is so nice to see you at shows. It is nice when you introduce yourself.
Take care LaVon

Man is it hot! How hot is it? It's so hot the trees are whistling for the dogs. Pad dumm dum.
Busy, busy, busy...last weekend. Red and Ruby (myself and guitarist Vince Brown for those of you out of the loop) went to Eugene and Cottage Grove. Opened for the fabulous Flat Mountain Girls at Sam Bond's Garage s in Eugene. Attitudinal, grit-spittin',old timey 30's Appalachan goodness from some powerful wimmin folk. Hope that we get a chance to cross paths again some time soon. We then sauntered over to Cottage Grove and shook it up a little at the Axe and Fiddle. To hear more Red and Ruby go to myspace. Mark your calendar now for the Red and Ruby CD Release party at Traditions Sept 22!
I must admit that I have never spent a lot of time in Oregon (yep-Iâ??m not a northwest nativeâ??I have been known to say Ory-gon) anyway particularly in Eugene there were a lot of bikes. Yep-bicycles. The place was rolling with cyclistsâ??and not your spandex clad types but just plain folks commuting throughout town. There are plenty of big friendly bike lanes- an inspiring example of what it could be like to live car free.
