Hey All!

I am sitting in the beautiful sunshine of Nashville, TN sipping on some echinacea tea and getting ready to go into the studio in a couple hours. I'm doing some work as a demo singer, which means that I won't be recording my own material, but some else's who is trying to pitch their stuff to another artist or label. This isn't quite as fun as doing my own songs, but I do get paid for a change haha.

Last night my gig with Southbound went amazingly! Everyone was spot on and we may have a few follow up shows because of it! There are 8 singers, four guys and four girls and 8 band members. I love making music with that group, every single person is incredibly talented and fun to be with.

I made a successful batch of chili this morning without severing any of my appendages (hence the successful part). After I'm finished in the studio I'll head over to Trader Joe's for some highly budgeted grocery shopping (beans and rice my friends) and then start tackling the ole homework load (boo).

Speaking of which! I had a really fun Halloween! My roommate Julie and our friend Douglas and I went out as the Pink Ladies from the movie Grease and Douglas was our Greaser. Talk about crazy.

Hope you all had safe and Happy Halloweens!

I'm playing Dan McGuiness Monday night around 9, come out if you can!

Lovingly,

First of all, I found $11 in my dirty laundry. Oh Yeah. It's gonna be a good day!

Second, I'm really excited to be part of the country music group Southbound from Belmont University.

We are performing tonight at the Franklin Marriot Coolsprings, in Franklin, TN. 7pm.

I'll be singing 4 songs with the group.

Guilty in Here (Miranda Lambert)

I Run to You (Lady Antbellum) a duet with Jess

Then I'm excited I will also be singing one of my original songs acoustic called "Gone"

And one of my all time favorites "Landslide" (stevie nicks)

Yay!  come out tonight if you can.

Have a great weekend.

Current mood:  crazy
It was a beautiful crisp, cool morning in lovely Nashville, Tennessee. I awoke with a smile at 9:45 am. I decided it was a very good day to make beef stew. I have never made such a dish before. Actually I have not made very many successful dishes before other than the classic Ramon Noodle. However, I was feeling exceptionally courageous this morning.
I pulled out all the ingredients, beef, broth, celery, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, etc. I dumped the beef into the pan whilst making every effort not to let any part of it touch my skin. I have a mild raw meat phobia. Yick.
Next came chopping the vegetables. This recipe called for 2 onions. I thought that was rather a lot but chopping things makes me feel like an 19th century housewife, which I occasionally enjoy feeling like a couple times a year, so I set to work with vigor. Part way through the first onion, my eyes began to burn worse than when I accidentally rubbed my eyes after playing with my bottle of mace. There must be some way to avoid this pain! I thought to myself.
Got it! Safety goggles would definitely do the trick...hmm I don't seem to have any on hand. Oversized sunglasses would have to suffice. I popped them on my head and continued to happily chop, chop, chop away.

Quite suddenly, there was an immense pressure on my left thumb. I whipped the sunglasses off of my head (apparently they obstructed my vision... who'd a thunk?) expecting my thumb to be gone. Upon closer examination, it was still there, but rather mangled and spewing blood all across the kitchen. I have a low tolerance for wounds, so seeing my thumb practically sliced off nearly made me pass out.
After jumping up and down for a while and letting fly a stream of sassy curse words it occurred to me that I should probably try to stop the bleeding. I grabbed a wad of kleenex and wrapped it tightly around my thumb. I wandered aimlessly around my apartment a few times and wondered vaguely if I would need stitches. So I called my mom.
When I didn't burst into tears at the sound of her voice I figured that stitches were unnecessary.
"I knew I shouldn't have bought you sharp knives!" was her reply, "Throw them away right now!" But I didn't. I cleaned up the mess and continued to make a beef stew large enough to feed a small army. I'm not very good with portions.
So that's my story of the week! The good news is that I am not left handed, the bad news is that I generally use both of my hands through out the day. I am creature highly dependent on my opposable thumbs. Oh well.

On other news! Chasin' Steel, the AMAZING bluegrass band from Marguette, MI, was in Nashville this week. I had the great privilege of watching them perform at the Bluegrass Inn on Broadway and doing a couple songs in between their sets. I can't say enough good things about this amazing group of musicians from my homeland! Check them out! CHASIN' STEEL!

Peace, love and happiness

Current mood:  jedi

What a summer! I don’t know where to begin. What I anticipated being a peaceful, forest retreat full of writing and dreaming turned into a fully-fledged tour and practice schedule. I started my summer with a bang in May, traveling to Orlando, Florida after being invited to showcase at the Florida Music Festival. After a few days of crazed city nightlife and endless amounts of great music from countless indie artists, I flew back to Nashville in a blur to collect my belongings and head home to Michigan.

Straight away I started working with some of the GREATEST musicians in town to put together my band. I had Paul Smith on lead guitar. Paul had been my guitar teacher and friend for about 5 years before I moved to Nashville and continues to teach me something new every time we work together. Paul recently recorded a country record in Nashville with the legendary Jack Clement, who has worked with the likes of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Check him out! PAUL SMITH.

I had the privilege of working with Mark Lucier for the second summer in a row. He is an amazing drummer and a good friend of mine. I was also able to work with Scott Veenstra (bass) for the first time and it was truly a pleasure. My younger sisters, Myiah and Wynter sang some crazy BGVs.  For all of our 13 some years living together it’s wonder that this was the first time we sang together professionally. Together, we sounded invincible. We were very close to achieving the sound I hear for myself in my head. I had so much fun working and playing with these PEOPLE!

I played more shows than I can remember around my area, some solo and some with the band. I did one show where I sang back up for Paul while he was promoting his album.

I visited the Windy City for American Idol Auditions; you can look back a couple blogs for a complete account of that experience. In late July I took a week out of my busy schedule to visit California for the first time with my family, San Diego and Los Angeles. Being a forest child, San Diego was a pleasure and LA, especially Hollywood, was a mildly frightening shock. The fast pace, hardcore city lifestyle is definitely not for me. But all in all it was a fun family retreat. We got to swim in the OCEAN! The last time I was at the ocean I was too young to remember, so this was the highlight of the trip. The beaches we packed with shiny people in swimming suits and the water was surprisingly, and rather unpleasantly EXTREMELY salty. I had no idea it would be so darn salty. Yick. Which made me think maybe it was the large congregation of people swimming than made it so salty….food for the thought. Haha sorry.

Anyways! I also had the great pleasure and honor of doing some co-writing and recording with my friend PJ Olsson. PJ is from my hometown but has spent some major time over in California for his music career. He is another artist to check out guys! PJ OLSSON. He has some great solo albums and is also the singer for Alan Parsons Project.

Ok back on track. This was my first co-writing experience. I never realized until I was right in the middle of it, how daunting a task it is. My songwriting is the most personal thing I have. It holds and releases all of my deepest, darkest or brightest emotions. Imagine having to share those thoughts with someone in their most raw, pure form in a professional situation. For me, it is very difficult. But with some coaxing and inspiration from PJ, we were able to create something totally AWESOME! A song called “Broken”. Which is not up on myspace yet just to tease you all haha. However, the other song we recorded is. This is one I wrote alone last spring, it’s called “Spellbound Man” and it was my first successful piano piece. This one is available for your listening pleasure on my home page. Please check it out and give me some feedback! I’d love to hear what you think.

Jeeze Louise this is getting lengthy. Okay, long story short. I packed all of my belongings into two cars and my family drove me down to Nashville and helped me get settled into my new apartment. Now I’m here. Alone. Slightly lonely. But once I get settled into the music things will get better. They always do.

Thanks so much for hanging in there with me through this ridiculously long blog and all the years of music! I’ll keep you up dated on anything and everything exciting.

            Have a beautiful day J

Whew, what a crazy week!

I have to start off with talking about Seafood Fest. AWESOME! I can't brag enough about my wonderful band and their amazing performance! The energy was incredible. We all had a blast. There was a huge turn out. So many friends and fans showed up to support us and buy CDs and t-shirts. Thank you guys! With out you the performance would only be a practice :) So thanks to those of you who made it!

For those of you who couldn't make it, here is the announcement you missed....

I tried out for American Idol in Chicago last Monday! We left at about 10 pm after Seafood Fest and drove through the night. We arrived at the United Center around 5:30 am on Sunday to register and spent the rest of the day being lazy at my roommate, Samantha's, house. We had to be in line Monday morning at 5 and Samantha lives almost an hour away from the United Center, so we all had to wake up at 3 am :S

7:30 am they started to let us into the stadium. 12,000 people came to audition, the second largest turn out ever. As soon as everyone was loaded in the stands, a man began directing us all to sing the group song of this season, Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold". Weeeee.

Due to the vast number of people, my audition wasn't until about 4:30 pm. It was a long day of sitting in the nosebleed section of a stadium downing hotdogs. They held auditions on the stadium floor while the remaining hopefuls chattered incessantly in the stands. There were 12 tables lined up, each with it's own pair of Idol producers. Contestants auditioned in groups of 4, each person getting about 15 seconds before the producers gave them the yes or no. I waited patiently in line as my section of the stadium slowly grew closer and closer to the producer's tables.

It was over so very quickly. I was the last in my group of four. I stepped forward and began to sing. My voice felt immediately dim in the huge stadium cluttered with nervous laughter and a cacophony of singing voices. A line and half into my song one of the producers cut me off with a quick wave of his hand. They passed over me and the other 3 people in my group. Our American Idol wristbands were promptly snipped off and we were ushered out the "Non Winners" door.

The hot Chicago wind was a shock to my skin after the dry cold of the air conditioned arena. I looked around for my mom, who was supposed to come out of some other door. I felt the familiar twinge of disappointment in the back of my mind but I pushed it down. I knew coming into this it would be a long shot. With the vast number of auditioners, they can afford to turn down countless talented people, there will always be someone else. I began walking towards another exit door when 2 large men, one baring a video camera starting making a b line towards me. "Oh, great" I thought. I kept my eyes downcast and veered to the left, but I was too late. They had me cornered.

"Hello, beautiful. Are you a model?" said the man without the camera. I squinted my eyes against the sun, disoriented by the wind. I was simultaneously annoyed, flattered and mildly frightened. "Um, no". They continued to ask me if I had auditioned and why I hadn't made it through. I tried to handle the impromptu interview with all the pose I could muster. The man, who I later learned is called Chicago Larry, asked me to sing a couple songs and allowed me to give a plug for my website. He then proceeded to tell me I sounded like Celine Dion and asked me what my favorite cereal was (CORN POPS!)

That pretty much ends my American Idol experience. After a lovely meal of sushi with Samantha and our mommies and a good night's sleep, we hit the road for home. I had two acoustic shows last week, both went very good. I'm always looking for the next step, carefully planning my next move or blind leap. I have to keep moving away from the things that don't work and some of the things that do as well, constant growth is so important, from a professional and personal stand point.

Thanks for reading this through guys! Have beautiful dreams tonight :)

Current mood:  breezy
It has been awhile since I've been able to have a good heart to heart with you. So I am excited to share what has been going on!

The end of my semester at Belmont went smoothly; my finals week begining with a 12:30 am Writer's Night followed by a 6 am wake up call chased by my first Red Bull ever (blah!) in order to get some studying in for an 8 am final, shortly followed by an 11 am final. Then I had to take two trips to the storage unit with my roommate, Samantha, helping her pack the last of her belongings away before she flew home the next day... Nearing complete exhaustion... The next day began with another 8 am exam and then my Classical Voice Jury. I somehow misinterpreted the time and was still in the practice rooms trying to warm up my very sleepy voice when my accompanist called to ask why I wasn't in the performance room! Ahh! Luckily the judges were kind and sympathetic and didn't mark me down. That night I went to bed around 9:30 and woke up after noon the next day. It was beautiful.

After finals, I packed my bags and headed down to Orlando for the Florida Music Festival 2009, which I was asked to showcase at. My mom flew down from Michigan to meet me and we spent then evening attempting to pass out flyers for my show the next day. Unfortunately, in a city full of hard core club life, my soulful folksy country was not an immediate turn on to most passers by. Not to mention most people thought I was some sort of loose woman handing out my cards. I probably shouldn't have been standing on the corner of the street... oh being raised in the backwoods of the North! It did not prepare me. My show the next day went well, besides the sound person leaving for my set after making sure I could handle the sound adjustments on my own, ("Uh, sure I can figure out all these knobs and buttons...(crap!)") Not as many people showed up as I was hoping, but I did get to spend time with my Aunt Connie, her boyfriend Charlie and my cousin Michelle, who made it just in time to watch me sing. I also made some really cool new friends, such as Patrick and Robert from Orlando Movement, and Don and Michael, who flew to Orlando just to see my show!

When the showcase was over, I flew back to Nashville to get my car and the rest of my things. My friend Tim met me in Nashville and together we scaled the vertical length of the United States to finally make it home again. We only got lost a few times. We stayed one night at my Grandma’s in Jackson, and I got to see my cousin Josh and his babies. (So cute!)

And finally after about three weeks of being on the road, I made it home. Yay J I immediately began working on putting my band together for Seafood Fest (See next blog). I also have had the great privilege of working with PJ Olsson’s Rock Camp. PJ is also an artist from my area, so he too can relate to the frustrations of trying to make music and art in a place so rural. PJ gathered together 16 talented kids from our community and made an excellent band to perform his songs at the Art and Music Festival. I was able to do one of my songs with them, called “Children of a New Time”. It was so cool to be a part of something this big. All of the kids were so excited to be involved and making music. It was awesome to watch how at each day of rehearsal, they got better and grew more confident. And everyone looked up to PJ so much.  He is such a cool guy and I am so happy to know him. The performance was amazing! The festival took place in the middle of the street and there was a huge turn out for Rock Camp’s Show.
