The Sun City Girls
are not for everybody and that’s on purpose. Because of the slippery
and obscure nature of the group, comparisons to other musical concerns
are shaky at best and the only reliable way to describe them would be
to state the known facts. The Girls coalesced in Phoenix, Arizona in
1982. Alan and Richard Bishop adopted percussionist Charles Gocher as a
percussionist and third brother after a particularly raucous Open Mic
Night at a local pizzeria. Gigs were then booked with fellow
Phoenicians JFA under the pretense of being
an all-girl hardcore band. This ruse lead to great amusement and
consternation among audiences and established the trio’s reputation as
highly suspect, and consistently disinterested in being liked. READ THE REST AT VBS.TV

As you may have heard, Lux Interior died this morning. Personally, I was never that into the Cramps, but I am deeply indebted to Lux for putting together The Purple Knif Show, a one-off radio special that aired out of Hollywood in 1984 and landed on vinyl shortly thereafter. Lux's DJ set is a groovy grab-bag of the songs that influenced his band: primitive 60s garage rock, early punk, some soul 45s, one-off novelty tunes, surf jams, and familiar staples from old gods like the Trashmen and Link Wray. He made fantastically crappy movies for lunch money and they became
cult favorites and Mystery Science Theater 3000 mainstays and as of
today he’s dead. But please don’t remember Ray Dennis Steckler as just
another Ed Wood. “If somebody comes up to me and says ‘You remind me of
something,’ they’re on my shitlist.” Steckler never gave two shits
about UFOs or vampires, and, he would never be caught dead dressed in
angora and a woman’s brasierre. Steckler was a man’s man, and he died
wearing pants. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

I have a weekly radio show called Bim Bam Boom. Here's the deal about it.
Bim Bam Boom is a sonic safari across space and time, where international collides with local and everything goes bananas. DJ Yr Friend Matthew is the host of the monthly Pogo In Togo music party at Cake Shop, so expect performers from this event to drop into the studio for live performances and guest DJ spots.

Nerds, punks, goths, gorehounds, freaks, fangorians, fantasists, and also futurists are all this week mourning the passing of Forrest J. Ackerman, the original sci-fi nerd and monster-movie journalist. Forry held an especially unique place in the Los Angeles landscape by dint of turning his house into a museum which he opened to the public once a week. Several years back me and a buddy of mine stopped by the Ackermansion to tour the grounds and pay our respects to the soon to be late Uncle Forry...

I interviewed R. Stevie Moore for Vice. Deep in the belly of a castle in suburban New Jersey, R. Stevie Moore has been recording and publishing more records than just about anybody you can think of, all by his lonesome. Since 1976 “The Godfather of Home Recording” has produced and self-distributed over 400 albums, starting with the brilliant Phonography, and tackling pretty much every genre of music to ever exist.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
