GruvAvénue are set to astound yet again, as they take on the challenge of being the first Malaysian Jazz group to record a live album. A binding force, these musicians embrace not only free improvisations but also appreciate tonal composition and extended musical forms and changes. Any brief moments of conventionality are trumped by eclecticism, an excellent composing transcends the established musical borders and stares down current definitions of what jazz should be. You're assured delicate melodies, a strong rhythmic sense, vibrant harmonic nuances and pulsating grooves!

9 & 10 Nov 2007

Formerly known as "Black Machine", GruvAvénue exploded into the KL music scene with its inaugural performance in The Actors Studio in 2001. Since then, GruvAvénue has continued performing actively, securing regular stints in jazz clubs and festivals around the country. The self-titled debut album "GruvAvénue" consisting of entirely original materials previewed at Alexis in July 2005. They return this time round to showcase their latest album, The Awakening.

GruvAvénue keeps a simple and yet organic instrumentation – bass, saxophone, drum and keys. GruvAvenue's musicians come from a wide range of jazz backgrounds and together they embrace not only free improvisations but also appreciate tonal composition and extended musical forms and changes. They have come together with a love for the new jazz as well as the old- each bringing their own unique quality that reaches out to a varied audience.

Most of the time, i wish there's 30 hours in a day. During the last 2 weeks, i was at the Mastering Studio night and day, and re-doing the mix so many times until the engineer lost count. Before that, that's another 2 weeks with 16 hours everyday with hornman Shazee for the mix. Before that, was the concert of Oct 3, which took my three months of hands-on.

While these seemed like a never ending process and everyone keeps on asking, "Why it took so long?". The best way to figure it out is to be involved and able to experience it thoroughly. For example, every micro details need to be rectified and perfected. These take a lot of time to play, hear, edit, play, hear, edit, play, hear, edit.....and repeat! One good example here is that Billy had to do the mastering from scratch for the 3rd time cos there're plenty of room to make it sound so much better. The album has a total of 14 tracks. Since our gig at Groove Junction was cancelled last minute cher siang and martin managed to drop by for a listen. Before we finished settling one track, they're bored and started to exercise within the studio; while mastering geek, Billy thought it's done way too fast compared to other albums. By all means, we managed to do a good job, get it done and sent for printing. Big thanks to Shazee, Billy and Khoon.

Now, i'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll receive the stock before the alexis gig. Anyone that's interested to buy the CD, just pop-in there on next weekend 9 & 10 Nov 07, 10:30 onwards (or later!). It's a nice place for some chillin'.

Foreword: Living in a multi racial society guarantees a lot of festive seasons and holidays! This year we had the New Year on the Jan 1, followed by Awal Muharam on Jan 20, then Thaipusam on Feb 1, and on this coming Feb 18 & 19 would be the Chinese New Year. Then the holiday replacement will be on the 20th because 18th is a Sunday, this will be a long week of holidays and very little choices for eat-out or takeaway since most stalls and some restaurants will not be operating at all. The common practice for chinese requires the employees to start working on the 5th day from the CNY, and most chinese still follows this old sayings/ customs. Hence if you're working within a chinese corporate, the officials off-days are 17 - 23 Feb!

In conjuction with this long festive holidays and the return of our saxman, Shazzy after his stay in the Big Apple, we'll be playing in Alexis on this Feb 23 & 24. (*Shazzy was staying in New York and somewhere around Canada in January doing his album recordings and MTV shootings!). Our new lineup also includes Cher Siang and Martin. Cher Siang is my old pal from college. He just returned to KL after years of studying (missing from KL scene!) in States. He brought back a music degree and a fiance. Though i'm not so sure of how these two issues are related, but statistics have proven that a lot of tertiary music students meet their partner in life while in college or uni. On behalf of the band, we would like to congratulate Cher Siang on his engagement which falls on the week after our show. Martin is the heart throb within the group. This guy is ultra friendly and a master of sweet-talk (to females only!). He has a gentle personality and plays a tight drum. So i really look forward to the show and hopefully able to catch up with some friends if they're in town.

Also we'll be playing a couples of new tunes. Hence i better get back to the 'writing' and get more manuscripts!

 See you there!
