So, thug monkeys continue to plague my life. For those of you not in the "know," one of my professors had his office broken into and his laptop stolen. The laptop contained his gradebook and my SSN. First, I wish he didn't have my SSN on there - but that is for another blog. Second, the university offers free encryption services.  Why didn't he use it? Why didn't he know about it? Ugh! Third, I feel pretty okay about the experience since the letter written by Brian Nichols - the university's IT Security Officer - suggested that I sign up for the university's credit monitoring service. I already have! I am excited to be one step ahead of the game in this respect at least.

So, if you have been keeping up with the saga in The Reveille, you know that my PC got a virus and I lost all of my files. I also lost the papers I had written for my English class. Luckily I had print outs of most of them or had posted them on Semesterbook. Still, I lost everything that was "in progress" and my music files. I should have backed up my files. I also should have updated my computer software and downloaded the latest anti-virus software. Did you know you (if you are member of the LSU community) can download it for free from tigerware.lsu.edu? Lessons learned.

So, I think I have lost my job. I left my computer open and someone got on to my e-mail as a joke and sent my boss at ITS a nasty e-mail message.  It looks like I sent it since it came from my e-mail. Even if I explain to my supervisor that I stupidly left my e-mail open - I should know better. It is really embarrassing.

I discovered what I think are pretty freaky facts. Did you know that 1 in 30 college students loses his or her identity? 69% of identity theft offenses are committed by a friend or aquaintance. Scary. I am all freaked out now about someone I know and trust being a thief. I think I am being pretty smart (now) about monitoring my credit but I have also started being more careful in general. I shred all of my mail now - especially credit applications and items that have personal data on them. My driver's license does not have my Social Security number on it. I have also started keeping my personal  files - like my passport, birth certificate, and whatnot locked up. My roommate is cool but who knows about the folks that sort of wander in and out of our room.

Current mood:  anxious
Today is Friday the 13th. Normally, it wouldn't phase me. But to be frank, this week has sucked so I'm a bit anxious about today. If you follow my trials in The Reveille, you know that I fell for a phishing scam that resulted in an identity theft. Someone took out a credit card in my name and started charging to it. Straightening this out was a real pain. Luckily I had signed up for the free credit monitoring from LSU so I caught the charges in time. But I still had to spend yesterday on the phone with the police and the credit agencies and get all of my sh#t straight. Not fun. Truthfully, it could have been worse. But what will today bring?

I am now on the way to "famous" so I'm pretty stoked. Nfreke Ette name-checked me in Tuesday's issue of The Reveille. Then my first storyboard was on the back page. I'm not happy about being portrayed as such a loser, but if you can learn from my mistakes - and they amuse you- then I guess my job is done. Sign up for free credit monitoring, LSU faculty, staff, and students.
