i've been a lonesome drifter nearly all my life / standing on a corner i caught an east bound ride / as i boarded the bus i saw her sitting there / i bet she's got a boyfriend and i don't even care / she tapt me on the shoulder and handed me a note / along with her name and number this is what she wrote:
"when i get to where i'm going i'll think back on this day and thank the lord i took the chance and didn't let you walk away" / well later on that night we sat and talked a while / about the places we have been and time spent as a child
we spent the next few nights wrapt in each others arms / talking of the future and good times sure to come / well the world was self destructing all around us though it seemed / the beauty of an orchid and the smell of gasoline
twenty years ago son my father said to me / take to the road a drifter that's all you'll ever be / well ive been traveling down this roadside since about the break of day / i need my woman in my arms like the flowers need the rain
so i thank the lord for that morning when i chose to catch a ride / i climbed aboard that east bound bus and forever changed my life...
