While Dubai might be overloaded with house nights, there are precious few alternative DJs out there. Step forward, then, one highly experimental man and his new club night, Sweet and Sour.

T: Your flyer just landed on my desk – that's pretty impressive advertising.
P: Oh really. Well it's good to know my team's doing their job. I'm trying to get one guy to distribute all the flyers but it's kind of tricky – lots of places don't allow you to put down the flyers.

T: Why are you putting on Sweet and Sour?
P: Simply because there's nothing like it. This is the music I like and it's in the kind of club that I'd go to. I like all kinds of dance music but when you go to a night it's mostly all house or all breakbeat or drum and bass. Personally I get a bit tired of it all and I like to be constantly surprised and pay attention to the music.

T: Who are your musical heroes?
P: It changes all the time to be honest, I find new heroes on a day to day basis. My old heroes are Afrika Bambaataa, the Beastie Boys and Michael Jackson. I don't mind dropping the occasional old song if it's still good.

T: You're up against Shakira and Twisted Melons – which one do you fear?
P: Twisted Melons. The Shakira event finishes at 11.30pm so they can still come down after.

T: You could bill yourself as the official after-party and get Shakira bumping and grinding to some Brazilian baile funk.
P: Ha ha ha, that would be great. I'll send her an invite. Twisted Melons might have an impact. If you're more into the indie pop vibe you'll head to Melons, but we're after the indie/dance/electronica scene so we should be OK.

T: Is there a market for that?
P: Yeah, I hope so. Ask me again in a week.

T: What happens when you get asked for Kylie for the 10th time?
P: Well, if I have the tune then I'll play it. But if they ask for Iron Maiden then that's a different story. Hopefully the people going will expect the music I'm playing so I won't get too many weird requests.

T: I reckon you'll get a couple of Rubbish & Boring requests.
P: I don't mind dropping some R&B, there's some great stuff out there.

T: Apart from the fact you've got your own night, what's the best thing about Dubai's club scene?
P: There's always something worth going to on the weekends. If we got a third of the artists we get here coming to Sweden [where PreRoll, real name Henrik, is from] it would be a completely different place. I think we're spoilt for choice but there's room for more choice here. It's all the big names over and over again.

T: You're mixing on a laptop – is that not cheating?
P: Some people say that. But where do you draw the line? They are the same comments DJs got when they played on CDs a couple of years ago and now it's completely accepted. It's just a tool. I'm not a turntablist or a scratcher or anything – I'm more of a selector, I guess.

T: The ultimate jukebox?
P: Yeah, I guess so. You want the DJ to mix the songs nicely but it's more about the songs played rather than the equipment used for me. In another three years it'll be accepted.

T: What's your dancefloor killer?
P: Well, I have to represent Sweden here so it would be by a group called Krazyfiesta and it's called 'Never Zkared'.

T: On your night, you'll be playing (deep breath) French hipster electro, mash-ups, techno, Baltimore club, nu rave, hip hop, acid, ghetto bass, punk funk, Brazilian baile funk, breakbeat, poptronica, electro, old skool jungle, house and crunk. Why?
P: Good music is good music and I've always had very varied tastes so anything goes.

T: And if they don't like the tunes, the flyer says that there's free champagne?
P: Yeah, for girls who get there before midnight there is.

T: Darn it.
P: You can always dress up…

Sweet and Sour is at Chaos on Friday March 23. Tickets are Dhs30 and ladies get free champagne and entrance before midnight.

DJ BOOTH WITH PREROLL
Growing up in Sweden, PreRoll was raised on a diet of everything from p-funk and Italo disco to Chicago house, hip hop and electronic body music. Fast forward 20 years and he's still exploring new sounds, recently a lot of booty bass, B'more club and French hipster electro. PreRoll is no full time DJ (he moved out to Dubai 3 years ago to further his career in Visual Effects Design), but he is a resident at local radio station LushDXB.com and is doing mixes that are downloaded in the thousand's and celebrated in places as diverse as Holland, Sweden, Mexico, France, Thailand and Canada. -Where do you like to go and dance/party/chill out?
I'll go anywhere there's a good party or somebody interesting playing, it's not so much about where you go, it's about the music and who you are going with. I've had great times at lots of different venues in town, everywhere from dingy Deira-side dive bars to swanky and champagne soaked Jumeirah places, but if I have to pick one spot that's almost always good it would have to be iBO.

-Vinyl, CD or laptop and why?
Laptop. Come on, years ago high brow puritans complained when DJs started spinning CDs in stead of vinyls, which today is accepted and common practice. And today those same people now frown upon laptop DJs. Electronic dance music is about being open minded and progressive, it's not about being nostalgic or elitist. Also, does it really matter what set up you use to make people go ballistic on the dance floor..?

-Tune to woo someone you like?
In that case I would pick Franzl Lang's "Klarinettenmuckl joddler", if that goes down well I know I'm home safe hehe.

-The place you would like to DJ the most?
Any small, intimate, steaming place with a crowd that knows how to get down, and get down well.

-The dance scene in Dubai is….
Sorely lagging behind in certain aspects. Yes, we do breakbeat, house and progressive quite good. But whatever happened to styles and genres such as bmore, baile funk, ghetto tech? Or that whole French flavoured electro-hipster thing that has been huuuge for quite some time now in Europe and the US. Or the cut up hip hop induced house à la Switch, Sinden etc? It's nowhere to be found here (with a few, irregular exeptions). And I am sure it would go down well with the crowd here. I think people here ready for something new!

-Acts you'd like to see come to Dubai?
Too many to mention, but here's a few: Jokers of the Scene, Justice, Para One, Curtis Vodka, Digitalism, MSTRKRFT, Thermostatic, CSS, SebastiAn, the Floukids crew, the DiscoBelle crew, Modeselektor, Sinden, Erol Alkan, Les Petit Pilous, Guns'n'Bombs, Simian Mobile Disco, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Spank Rock…

-Any gigs planned in the near future?
I realise my eclectic style seems hard to market here in Dubai, so there are a few dedicated people who are making plans, just wait and see.
