Update from Suburban Home Records (make sure you also check out the recent pre-orders for the Takers, Jon Snodgrass/Cory Branan split LP, and the Wayword Sons (William Elliott Whitmore)/Sam Lowry split 7":

AUSTIN LUCAS/ THE TAKERS split 7" frosty blue vinyl

I absolutely love where we are at with the label these days. We have what I consider to be some of the greatest new voices in Americana and our artists not only tour together, but in the case of the Austin Lucas with the Takers 7", they also record together. Soon after Austin finished recording his modern day masterpiece, "Somebody Loves You", he flew down to Florida to see family, play a few shows, and hang out with friends. During these days, he hooked up with Suburban Home's newest band, the Takers, to record 4 songs at Crescendo Studios (the same session Austin recorded his Under the Influence track, "To Daddy"). The Takers, for those of you who don't know, are Suburban Home's Outlaw Country band. The Takers call Gainesville, Florida home, have members of Whiskey and Co, and after having put out an incredible debut 7", have recently finished recording their debut album for us. The 4 song 7" finds Austin performing on the Takers' tracks and the Takers performing on Austin's tracks and the session might fool you into thinking that the guys have been playing together for years. There are 2 covers and 2 originals.

Update from Suburban Home Records

I love it when our artists tour together in the states, but it is even more exciting to see them touring together in Europe. This week, Austin Lucas and Mike Hale will begin an almost 6 week tour of Europe together. Josh Small will join the tour on June 9th (in Denmark) and will finish the tour out with Mike and Austin. If anyone wants to send me a plane ticket to spend a few weeks on the tour, I would not complain. If you find yourself near any of the tour stops, please go and support our aritsts, I promise you will see an amazing show as well as meet some nice folks.

Somebody Loves You Full Album Stream [Punknews.org]

Video for "Go West" [Youtube]

Austin's good friend, Anders Lund, flew out to film Austin Lucas while recording "Somebody Loves You"; he also shot a really great video for "Go West" which is on our Youtube channel. You can watch the video in HD.

Austin Lucas / Frank Turner "Under the Influence" Podcast [Vinyl Collective]

Vinyl Collective's own Andy Thomas and Ralph Eberhard worked together to put together this podcast for Under the Influence #8 between Austin Lucas and Frank Turner. Andy asks both guys why they recorded the songs they recorded, what other songs they were thinking about recording, what they are currently up to and on the podcast, you can listen to the original version of the song each guy covers as well as an original song by each artist. Expect future episodes with all of the Under the Influence artists.

"Somebody Loves You" [mp3 download]

The first song off the album and the title track available for download for FREE. This is a brilliant song and a great example of what you can expect with this new album. The song's subject matter is not exactly what you think it woulud be from looking at just the title.

You can buy the album directly from us at this link. The CD is available at Hot Topic and at great mom and pop indie stores. And the vinyl will soon be available at most retailers as well as Hot Topic. The album will be available at Emusic, Itunes, Amazon and more on March 17th.

so some folks have brought it up to me about how life I've got was on the "at war with freak folk" 10" and I just wanted to shed some light on that fact. firstly, "at war" was meant to be a european only release of only 500 copies and a teaser of sorts for what was to come with the next full length.. truthfully I wanted to get out the batch of songs onto a release where I was playing on my own doing live takes with just guitar and voice.. I hadn't done a release like that before as I always have my family playing all over everything with me... anyway, I always knew that some of the songs on "at war" would make it onto the next record as I wouldn't dream of denying those songs the touches my family would eventually put onto them.. that being said, there are 4 songs of the 6 from "at war" featured on the new "somebody loves you record".. there are also another 7 songs contained which is one less than my last full length "putting the hammer down".

anyway, I hope that clarifies things a bit and helps everyone with any confusion that may have been floating around.. cheers everyone and I hope you are all well during the holidays.. love, austin

To be completely honest, I know more about Austin Lucas than I do about his current residence in The Czech Republic, which doesn't attest too much besides my ignorance of The Czech Republic. I know Lucas was born in the United States and moved, has played in crust and grind bands, and has worked with Chuck Ragan. Not necessarily the likeliest resume, but things look promising. When label head Brent Eyestone isn't (understandably) promoting the hell out of This Will Destroy You, Magic Bullet Records seems to be giving most of their attention to Lucas. And given their current lineup of bands, it shows the confidence they have in him.

I've always been in appreciation of crossover musicians that can made the tradeoff so well, and splitting time between grind and bluegrass folk music is a feat many musicians dare not attempt, although it would be interesting to hear Magrundergrind or Insect Warfare covering a Bright Eyes song. But before I get too off topic, Lucas was born in Indiana and it's plain to see him paying homage to the Midwest with Putting the Hammer Down. Traditional bluegrass instruments are used, such as the banjo and fiddle, as well as bass and guitars. The music is patient and takes patience, but it can be worthwhile.

The first song on the album, "Man Alive," is my favorite song to come out in 2008. The banjo and fiddle intertwine with the banjo being finger picked to set the pace and the fiddle lifting the song upwards. Lucas' voice has a powerful tremble to it, as he sings, possibly autobiographically, about a sickly man struggling to survive. The song's chorus brings to life the ailment with Lucas crooning, "My breath is a hammer / My insides are taxed like an anvil / My heartbeat's a tremor / And I have not love but for nicotine." The song has a swift pace to it, although the pace quickly dies down.

Chloe Manor makes an appearance on five songs, with "How Are You My Lover" being the first. Putting the Hammer Down is as much of a collective effort as it is Lucas' work, as apparent in the sweet tenderness her voice brings to all of the songs she collaborates in. Most of these songs are drawn out and move slowly, but they are always a constant.

Lucas is without a doubt a musical craftsman, with lyrical content and a voice to envy. However, these are not songs to listen to absentmindedly, driving through a city, or getting dressed for work. It takes the right state of mind to fully appreciate Putting the Hammer Down, with this writer's suggestion to do so at dusk on the porch with your favorite alcoholic beverage. I don't know much about The Czech Republic, but it can apparently be the breeding ground for crust folk crossovers, which says enough in it's own right.
- Cory - scenepointblank.com

Given his penchant for body art and his association with locally based punk-heavy label Magic Bullet Records, one might expect a certain amount of crossover indie and hard-core influence from folk singer Austin Lucas on "Putting the Hammer Down," his North American debut.

The Indiana native, currently living in the Czech Republic, has previously released material in Europe and found it well-received. However, while "Hammer" is certain to be enjoyed by those fond of folk and country--as well as some fans of indie rock--it doesn't really come through with the expected genre-busting impact.

The first track, "Man Alive," arguably one of the best on the album, begins with guitar, banjo and fiddle in a style slightly reminiscent of that which is played in Busch Gardens Williamsburg. It feels like the perfect soundtrack to a Paul Bunyan tale.

On this track, Lucas sets a definite tone and precedent for what will follow. His voice is pleasant, but twangy in a way that makes enjoyment very subjective--a statement that can be made often for others in the genre.

Lyrics fraught with figurative language and description facilitate the easy creation of mental images, such as in the lines "My breath is a hammer/ My insides are taxed like an anvil." Though the melodic nature of each song draws the ear far more to the instrumentation than to such lyrics, it's definitely worth taking a small bit of forced concentration to focus on them instead.

Lucas's words are more poetic--and much less repetitive--than what one might expect from punk or hard-core music. He doesn't need to worry about "pumping up" the listener, and meanders around phrases fit for novels written in a clear voice, such as in "Bruiser": "I watched you poison yourself until blood soaked your lips my dear/ And over the years felt the gloom and decay" and "glamorous liver failure and collapsed veins."

The entirety of the LP follows in similar manner, appealing to much the same sensibilities. It only consists of eight tracks, but as each is over three minutes, with the average probably being slightly over four, it still comes out a solid 35 minutes in length.

Despite his lack of varied appeal, Lucas' proficiency at what he does warrants a listen from even the reluctant. Some might find themselves unexpectedly fond of folk when it is "done right" and comes from the guitar and voice of someone who, on the surface, appears to have punk influences.

Brinkley Sharpe

Austin Lucas looks like your typical crusty punk type but if you spin his record you would never guess he does. This record is full of original country music with a touch of American singer/songwriter folk tradition.

With touching songs about life the simple way it is and the big feelings it comes along with this record has really found its way into my heart.
There are so many punk rockers who try to play country music nowadays and most of them are average or worse but this has got quality. Every single note makes clear that Mr. Lucas really knows and loves what he is doing. It is not enough to write pop songs and play them on country instruments. It takes more and this "more" is what makes the difference between this jewel and the heaps of lukewarm attempts out there. one of the best records this year.

- JAN - YELLOW IS THE NEW PINK

Introducing Austin Lucas is, I think, wholly useless. Many of you have heard about him or in the better case have seen his live performance. the newly emited CD version of "The Common Cold" by german label Sabotage Records gives me the chance to write a few words about him. I am keen on it of course, because above all I can say the album is great.. full of emotions and the author's personality. Austin clearly has given a large piece of himself…

This is the point which has captivated me most when it comes to austin, because within the songs lies his heartiness and personality captured forever in the music and lyrics. They are personal expressions of his world and of the things which he lived through and was touched by. They are tiny bits of life, played without dissimulation for all to see. This is their strength, they are real stories.

The album "The Common Cold" is his solo debut. Nevertheless it is mature and finalized to absolute perfection. It is possible to write that it is a folk & country album but it wouldn't express enough its depth. Austin is weaned by punk and he has the heart, and these two parts are evident on this record. His freshness is hidden in his sincerity, Austin doesn't make any false image, he is himself! As a songster he joins the elements of classic American country like johnny cash along with a touch added(maybe) from Plant-x Records bands like Against Me...

Austin's singing is a chapter for itself. Austin has sang from his childhood and his dominant and captivating voice is simply wonderful. Personally I consider him as the best singer who I have ever seen live.

I often ask myself how it is possible that with his style he finds an audience among so many listeners of hardcore, metal, crust as well as in the indie scene. For this I have no answer, although it is more than likely because he is an amazing performer and his talent becomes so readily apparent upon the moment you begin to open your ears.
I wish I could write objectively about this album but I have listened to it so many times I think it's impossible. it is my opinion, that no other record of it's equal has ever been emited in either germany or the czech republic...

Hört Euch mal Stück Nr.8 an... - ATAKEKS

If you belt it, they'll shut up: This seemed to be the theme Friday night at North Portland's Pink House. After not-half-bad basement performances by locals Upshit Creek and the Vonneguts, 27-year-old songwriter Austin Lucas gathered a captive crowd in the living room with a booming a cappella rendition of "Cruel Brothers," an eerie traditional Irish ballad. But when the Prague-based, Indiana-born singer continued with softer country originals, he had to battle against the noise of some women clamoring for entry into the suspiciously long-locked bathroom and general party chitchat. Eventually, he stopped mid-song and declared, "This is pointless." Two men immediately rushed forward and begged, "No it's not, keep playing," with the sort of panicked urgency normally used to talk someone out of suicide. Lucas finished his set to about 10 new admirers and a couple of old friends in the intimacy of the basement.

Austin Lucas looks like your typical crusty punk type but if you spin his record you would never guess he does. This record is full of original country music with a touch of American singer/songwriter folk tradition.

With touching songs about life the simple way it is and the big feelings it comes along with this record really found its way into my heart. But the funniest thing is the way I got this piece of vinyl. I bought it from Renke?s Zeitstrafe distro, to whom I had lend the tape of the very album that I had been given by the merch guy of Against Me! at their show in Bremen when I asked him what it was and he replied, he didn?t know but I should just take it. At home I found out that I missed his Hamburg appearance that had been just a few days before I had been give the tape and that some people I know were even friends of his from the times he used to tour with punk bands instead of simply his acoustic guitar. I was stunned.

Even more stunning is the quality of this record. There is so many punk rockers who try to play country music nowadays and most of them are average or worse but this got quality. Every single note makes clear that Mr. Lucas really knows and loves what he is doing. It is not enough to write pop songs and play them on country instruments. It takes more and this ?more? is what makes the difference between this jewel and the heaps of lukewarm attempts out there. And the glued in photo in the cover is so great! One of the best records this year.

Introducing Austin Lucas is, I think, wholly useless. Many of you have heart about him or in the better case have seen his performance. Emited CD version of „The Common Cold" by german label Sabotage Records gives me the chance to write a few words about him. I am keen on it, of course, because I can say about the album that it is great, full of emotions and author's personality. Austin gave in it a large piece of himself…

At first time I met this American guy, which lives in Prague, a few years ago at the concert (I think it was Remains Of The Day ). I was griped by his unreserve, friendly, heartful behaviour. In that time I set up the singl of his band K10 Prospect. Two acustique songs played on electric guitar were a bonus on this singl. There you can feel his great potential and talent. Time was passing and some time later he came with record for his debut solo album. Electric guitar was replaced by spain guitar which gave his production more personal dimension. Meanwhile I saw several of his live concerts and I have to say, that he very often played for different audience. I felt the fact, that his music was listened by people, that I would never guess. At last, the first sight on tatooed guy in jeans jacket with the patch Terorrizer only few of us would anticipate what we can expect from him. Probably on similar wave of surprise, tones and frankness I could tell to myself- as most of the others- "What the hell, It was really good.". This point of captivation by Austin is important, because there is his heartiness and his person is experessed in his music and lyrics. They are personal expressions of his life or of the things which he lived or he was touched by. They are pieces from the life, played without dissimulation and in the way he felt them. This is their strength, they are real stories.

The album "The Common Cold" is his solo debut. Nevertheless it is mature and finalezed to absolut perfection. In its own way it brings the limits. It is possible to write that it is a folk & country album. It is possible, but it wouldn't express enough its depth. Austin is weaned by punk and he has the heart, and these two parts are evident on his record. His freshness is hidden in his sincerity, Austin doesn't make any image, he is himself! As a songster he joins the elements of classic American country with whiff from Plant-x Records or Against Me. His production doesn't lack a detached point of view and facility, which he sings about uneasy things. Something similar I love on genius Johny Cash.

Austin's singing is a chapter for itself. Austin sings from his childhood and his dominant and captivating voice is simply wonderful. Personally I consider him as the best singer who I have ever seen.

I often ask myself , how it is possible, that with his style he finds audience among so many listeners of hardcore, metal, crust, indie scene. I have no answer! Maybe it is because he is an amazing person and he has the talent. Simultaneously he is a person of several music faces. He passed through a lot of groups and except of K 10 Prospect we can know him from Prague-American formation Guided Cradle, where he plays the guitar. I am curious what a visitor of folk festivals would say on his show or album .

Lyrics and music are two things which go hand in hand, but we can judge them separately too. Lyrics are very strong and intimate statements. I don't know how much pertains to him, but it is served in the way that you can't escape.. I recommend you to give attention to his lyrics. On "The Common Cold" we have a chance to listen nine pieces- nine stories. Child's fear, family problems, loves, vagrancy, searching and hopes… There's no bad piece! I must enthrone "The Common Cold" after that the album is named. It is amaizing and I can only assume that I am finding there K 10 Prospect on tours and with Austin I feel the same tiredness, that he could feel after fifty played concerts as he sings there. Don't be afraid, I won't write about particular lyrics and deprive you of thi searching….

I would like to be unprepossessed and write about this album objectively. But I listened to it so many times that I can't write about it in other way. I had the luck to know Austin personally and it confirms me in feelings which I have from this album. I think, it is an amaizing album strong and frangible together. According to my knowledg a similar record in the Czech Republic or in Germany has never been emited.
