It has been a while since I posted a blog on the HJB myspace opting for slightly more frequent postings on my John Rutherford space but after a great year for the Highwater Jug Band I thought I should say Happy New Year. The band wrapped up a busy 2007 with a hot set in cold temps at the City of Calgary's New Years Eve celebration staged on the steps of City Hall. It is just one year ago the band released its self titled debut recording. In that time the band has performed at clubs and festivals across western Canada, enjoyed significant airplay on Alberta's provincial radio super-power CKUA as with the CBC both provincially and nationally. The CD charted on the CKUA top 30 for several months topping out at 4 or 5. It also appeared throughout the year on Megatunes top 30 sales charts in both Calgary and Edmonton stores. We end the year and begin 2008 celebrating the news that the HJB disc shows up at 18 in the CKUA Top 100 of 2007. We are honoured to say the least. Thanks to everybody who has taken an interest in this project and for championing the cause. A further note of celebration and pride, HJB member Tim Williams solo project titled Songster, Musicianer and Music Physicianer shows up at 20 in the same list. Highwater Jug Band will be playing again next at our Calgary home base The Ironwood Stage and Grill on Thursday February 7, one night only! We will be announcing upcoming spring dates and summer festival appearances in the weeks to come. Again Happy New Year.

Thanks to everybody who came out to the big HJB party(s) in Calgary this weekend at the mighty Ironwood Stage and Grill including the many that traveled from very far to be with us. Both shows were completely sold out by Friday afternoon and both evenings were a blast. Thanks to CKUA Radio Network for coming in on Friday evening to record the show...listen up for the broadcast sometime in the near future on the CKUA program "Live From Alberta Stages". Thanks to Tom Coxworth for the lovely introduction on Friday night. Thanks to Kevin and Jimmy for the work on our live sound, both nights sounded fab. And...of course thanks to Pat and all the folks at the Ironwood for making us feel at home, it really is one of our favourite places to play (and to eat) in the whole world (and just around the corner from my house). Thanks to all the media and marketing support from CKUA, CJSW, CBC, City TV, Fast Forward, Swerve Magazine, thanks to Steve Speer for the great poster, thanks to Sandy Lam (Slam) for helping with this myspace technology. More thanks...to Steve Pineo for filling in on guitar for Dan Tapanila (Steve will be playing with us again this weekend at the Calgary Folk Club and the following weekend in Medicine Hat at theFolk Club there. It has been a great run so far since January 6th when we started touring Alberta with our new CD. The band now has its sights set on another busy period starting mid June when we will begin to play a number of dates around western Canada. Some of the dates are posted already and many more will be added in the weeks to come. And HEY!!! thanks to you for checking out our blog.

Hope you're coming to the CD party of the year! And, I hope you bought your tickets early as the first show Friday the 16th (tomorrow) is sold out and the Saturday show is getting there. They will squeeze a few more in as people walk up so please still try to get in...but I thought we should warn you that tickets are going fast. You can check with the Ironwood Stage and Grill by phone to try and reserve for Saturday night. The Ironwood's number is 269 5581. Other notes it appears that we will begin the evening at 9:30 PM but you better come early to get a good seat. Also please note that CKUA Radio Network will be on site Friday evening recording the performance for a future concert broadcast on the "Live From Alberta Stages" program. Another important note: unfortunately Dan Tapanila is not able to be with us for the next few shows in Alberta, instead the sensational Steve Pineo will be filling in playing guitar. See you at the party.

We are thrilled to say that the new recording is showing up on a couple of significant charts. The Highwater Jug Band debut CD entered the Megatunes Top 30 sales chart at #20 just days after it hit store shelves. It then climed to #16 last week where it has remained again this week. The CD is available at Megatunes in Calgary on 17th Avenue and at the Edmonton location on Whyte Avenue. I just noticed that the HJB CD has entered the CKUA Radio Network Top 30 chart at #5. Allison Brock from CKUA's smash hit program "Wide Cut Country" listed the recording in her FAR chart monthly favourites which has spauned a flood of interest in the CD and the band from US radio stations...thanks Allison! The band will be appearing on "Wide Cut" sometime very soon to play some tunes, chat and to thank Allison and CKUA again for the support.

The Highwater Jug band has just spent another three days in the studio this week and we think we have finished our CD. It is ready to send to mastering with a planned released in January. The process has been nothing short of a joyess occasion hanging with good friends and making music that we all seem to love. We had many laughs a few challenges to overcome but all in all a pretty easy time getting what we had set out to do. Just last night Tim, John and Rob Smith from the studio whiled away the hours late into the evening completing final mixes. We will now sit with it for the weekend and listen to it in a more casual setting to see how everything sits and think about the order of the songs for the disc. We have the cover and liner note artwork done and all we have left to do is put the song titles in order and mark the song running times and send it off to get printed and manufactured out Ontario way. We have posted two more songs slated for the CD here on our myspace. Please have a listen and if you feel like leaving us a message with your thoughts we sure would love to know what you think of it all. Thanks for tuning in and check our schedule for a CD release party near you.

how's this for an update?!...the members of the Highwater Jug Band just spent three days tucked away in a Calgary recording studio and have completed all the bed tracks and much of the work on the soon to be released HJB debut CD. There are ten full songs and a couple of instrumental refrains that showcase the sextet's songwriting talents and instrumental prowess with more than twenty instruments making an appearance on the recording. The remaining work on the project consists of only a few overdubs of solos and back ground vocals and cleaning up a few edges. The band will go back to the studio next month for two or three more days with the intent of finishing the recording and mixing process and be ready to send it out for mastering mid November. The best ETA on the finished product is early 2007...hopefully by January 6 for the beginning of the HJB Alberta winter tour but not likely in time for the holidays. We will be posting some tracks from the sessions on this myspace in just a few days. These tracks will be incomplete to some degree but will give a good indication of what is to follow.

Well this seems like a pretty cool deal...we...the band...Highwater Jug Band are pleased to be here at myspace. We just finished a rehearsal tonight as we zone in on some new material in preperation for our debut full length CD. The band will occupy Rocky Mountain studio in Calgary for three days later this month to capture what this wonderful, fun project sounds like. We recorded two songs in the same studio back in June of this year and released the songs as a promo single to a few friends in radio to introduce ourselves and promote a series of summer festival dates in Alberta. Those two songs should be loaded up and ready to listen to here on our-space in a matter of moments. We will be sure to add new songs as they come and keep you posted on upcoming shows (new dates to be announced soon). Thanks for checking in. HJB
