Dear Friends, I'm writing to ask for your participation in getting some attention for Louisiana's wetlands tomorrow at Tulane's Business Forum. Mark Quartermain, Shell's Energy North America President, will be presenting the morning keynote, "Providing Corporate Value in a Sustainable and Responsible Manner". The Gulf Restoration Network along with many concerned groups and individuals launched a campaign almost one year ago asking Shell to step up to the plate of their supposed corporate responsibility policies by paying to restore the wetlands they have destroyed with canals they have dredged. Their response: silence, inaction, and more of the same. The wetlands are vital to our safety, environment, and economy. Unfortunately, they are rapidly turning to open water, threatening our fisheries and water quality, and degrading one of our first lines of defense against storm surge. Shell has dredged 8.8 million cubic yards of pipelines just since 1983, which has caused a wetland loss of over 22,000 acres in that time. Federal programs for wetlands remediation, using a conservative pricing scheme, would require Shell to pay $361,984,000 for restoration for the company’s actions since 1983 alone. Shell should be a part of the financial solution.
Let's tell Shell and the business community in New Orleans and at large to put their money where their mouth is: restore the wetlands!
We'll meet at 338 Baronne Street at Gulf Restoration Network offices on the 2nd floor at 10:45 am and march to the Hilton Riverside where the forum is being held. During Quartermain's presentation, we'll chant, carry signs, and possibly hand out flyers to forum-goers, and passersby. The presentation is only 25 minutes long. We'll stay a few minutes after in order to catch people coming out of it.
Please wear/bring rain gear. Cameras are encouraged (please keep them dry!)

Mark your calendars: April 1 is APRIL FUELS DAY
WHAT and WHY: Time to tell Entergy that only a FOOL continues investing in and burning fossil fuels.
Join us for a march from the Gulf Restoration Network Headquarters to Entergy Headquarters for a protest of epic proportions!
Coal-fired power plants are one of the largest sources of air pollution in the United States. The consequences for human health are staggering, especially regarding particle pollution or soot, one of the most deadly types of air pollution in our country. Soot can trigger heart attacks and strokes, worsen asthma, cause an irregular heartbeat, and lead to premature death. Not only are coal-fired power plants a major source of soot pollution, they are also one of the largest contributors to smog in the nation. Smog is a mixture of fog and smoke, which contains sulfur dioxides. The damages from coal pollution continue after it settles to the ground, where it causes acidification of waters, soil nutrient depletion, and destruction of forests and crops.
Since first posting this event online, the Louisiana Public Service Commission asked Entergy Corporation to immediately suspend the conversion of the Little Gypsy Plant to burn coal and petroleum coke, and to review the economics of the project.
http:../../..www...all4energy...org/..news/..louisiana-..public-..service-..commission-..suspends-..little-..gypsy-..conversion
This is indeed a victory for the environment and all its advocates. However, we must send a message to Entergy and other power companies that we do not want any new coal, that there's no such thing as clean coal, that we need wind, solar, and geothermal energy, and that we need green jobs!
PLEASE JOIN US ON APRIL FUEL'S DAY!
WHEN: Wednesday April 1st 4 pm *RAIN TIME specified below
WHERE: Meet at 338 Baronne Street Then march all together to 639 Loyola Avenue *RAIN LOCATION specified below

Burning coal is a leading source of global warming pollution. US EPA, 2008
THE REALITY: The coal industry is spending millions advertising "clean coal", but not one clean coal power plant exists in the US today. IEA and MIT Databases, October 2008
Event details are developing rapidly, so check back before showing up for this awesome event.
RAIN TIME and LOCATION: We will meet at 4 pm at Cancer Survivor's Plaza, under the "pagoda". It's in the nuetral ground across the street from 639 Loyola Avenue, which is Entergy's New Orleans Headquarters.

Farmed Salmon
The David Suzuki Foundation ( www.davidsuzuki.org ) offers the following reasons why you shouldn’t eat farmed salmon: Environmental Reasons: Farmed salmon are grown in floating netcages and impact wild salmon and other marine species by spreading disease and parasites. Farmed salmon are given antibiotics, other drugs, and pesticides. The drug-laden wastes from surplus food and feces pollute the marine environment. Farmed salmon escape from their netcages - often by the thousands - and can displace fragile wild stocks from their habitat. Health Reasons: Farmed salmon are given antibiotics that are also used to treat human illness. This contributes to the dangerous increase of antibiotic-resistant disease worldwide. Farmed salmon receive more antibiotics by weight than any other livestock. Farmed salmon contain lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Mythic Reasons: Farmed salmon DON’T help feed the world; they represent a 'net loss' of protein worldwide. Three to five kilograms of other fish are used to make the feed to produce every kilogram of farmed salmon. Farmed salmon DON’T help conserve threatened or endangered wild salmon stocks. They pose a threat to wild stocks because of their parasites and disease contaminating wild salmon, because of their reducing the price of wild salmon, forcing fisherman to increase their catch in order to make a living. Farmed salmon DON’T taste just like wild salmon. In blind taste tests, farmed salmon loses every time. Food critics, chefs, and fisherman judge the taste and texture of wild salmon to be far superior to farmed varieties, which are often found to be bland and mushy. Farmed salmon are also administered chemical dyes to color their flesh an appealing pink; otherwise the flesh would be gray.

Indigenous Peoples' Caucus Statement
12th United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development
21 April 2004, United Nations, New York, New York Human settlements, water and sanitation cover a complex of social and ecological inter-relationships, between peoples and Mother Earth. Human settlements are cultural homes that nurture the traditional knowledge and wisdom within our larger ecological home, Mother Earth. Water is a sacred element of this planet and it sustains all life. Sanitation standard determines the well-being, health and life of biodiversity and peoples.
Human settlements among Indigenous Peoples are characteristically self-sustaining communities, where peoples are not separate from their lands, territories and natural resources, including water. These provide for peoples' social, economic, religious, political needs and environments. This is a far cry from the urban concept of settlements as simply infrastructures and facilities.
For Indigenous hunters, gatherers, nomads, farmers, herders, fishers and pastoralists, a continuing relationship and access to their natural homelands provide for their livelihood and food security. They follow patterns of human settlement, which are appropriate for their natural environments.
Related to human settlement, water is a critical source of life. In many Indigenous societies, their relationship to the life-giving qualities of water permeates their culture and spiritual values. Indigenous Peoples' systems of water management and use are based upon principles and practices that balance immediate needs with the needs of the environment and other living things, plants and animals, as well as other people, and the sustainability for future generations. Indigenous Peoples have an important role in sustainable water resource management and their knowledge is an integral part of humanity's heritage and cultural diversity.
Sufficient attention must be paid at this meeting to reviewing the overall concepts of governance, practice of sustainable livelihood, integrated land-use planning and resource management to ensure that the long-term diversity and health of ecosystems continue to nurture human settlements, including the well-being of Indigenous Peoples.
The demands of free trade agreements that promote the privatization of Indigenous lands and territories have forced many Indigenous Peoples to migrate to urban areas for economic reasons. Within these pockets of urban cities, Indigenous Peoples are forced to join human settlements of poverty and to survive in isolation, away from family support, a community sense of belonging and their cultural values. The poverty of Indigenous Peoples is directly linked to the dispossession of their lands, territories and natural resources, which are essential for their security, livelihoods and well-being. The loss of land through government expropriation, forced resettlement and modernization have severely impacted them.
In this context, due respect must be given to the Indigenous Peoples' right to self-determination and sovereignty over essential life-sustaining elements. Government policies are restricting access to their lands and territories, violating their right to sustainable livelihoods, water sources and appropriate housing. These policies directly undermine the goal of human security, poverty alleviation and housing for all, leading to the deep impoverishment of Indigenous communities.

this was sent to me by don of rebuild green, please read and feel free to circulate:
January 26, 2009 Hello, friends,
Attached is a letter to President Obama that was written by the 10-year-old daughter, Chloe, of a friend of mine in Oakland, California.
Chloe's Montessori School required students to watch last Tuesday's Inaugural Address. She turned her back in protest. Subsequently her class was given for their weekly writing-assignment the composition of a letter to the President. Chloe wrote the following, which Andrew shared with a list we're on.
The letter moved me so much that I asked if Chloe and Andrew would agree to an effort to bring it to a broader audience. An e-mail from them agreed to this effort.
Here is Chloe's letter: views and questions through the clear and caring eyes of someone born only ten years ago. I think her letter can have great, healthy effect. Please post or circulate it as you see fit.
'Dear President Obama,
On January 20th my class watched your inauguration ceremony. I didn't listen to your speech attentively while at school, but I watched it again today with more awareness. One of the messages I heard you state was that "America is a friend of every nation." If this is true then why are we at war in the Middle East, and why do we have more than 800 military bases around the world? Most of all, why is our military defense budget larger than all the other nations' combined if we are supposedly friends to all countries of the world?
If we want to build friendships with the other nations, such as Iraq, one of my suggestions would be to remove our troops from their countries before the end of 2009. I would close down military bases and direct the money spent on weapons and other military items toward other uses like education.
You also declared that, "We (Americans) will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waiver in its defense . . . " We should apologize to the world for our way of life. We have 5 % of the world's population and yet we consume 30 % of the world's resources. Our habits are unsustainable and we are slowly and painfully slaughtering our planet, Mother Earth. For this we must apologize and work toward a sustainable solution. I see this as our duty and responsibility if we want to begin building friendships with every nation. This is what our money and resources should be going to, not the military.
If we want to have good friends we need to be a good friend: to ourselves, and to the world. We have the opportunity to be a great nation and a true friend by making necessary sacrifices and working towards changing our need to consume the world's resources. As our leader how will you help us confront this looming challenge, which has been denied for decades and now must be addressed or Mother Earth will perish and so will we?
Sincerely,
Chloe Age 10 Oakland, California'
