Mixing of the new Jac Dalton album Icarus at Ardent Studios in Memphis is progressing well, with over half the tracks done amid good vibes and high expectations. Extra time has been booked to ensure that absolutely no corners are cut in the production of what is promising to be an excellent album.

A lot of inspired work has gone into this project, and the people who have appeared to join the cause - triple Grammy winner John Hampton is a prime example - have only served to strengthen the feeling that this is meant to be. The songs are developing into a cohesive body of work that we are already proud of, and thanks must go to our amazing producer Darren Mullan for his talent and mastery of his craft. Engineers just don't come any better than the legendary John 'Hamp' Hampton, and studio assistant Jason Gillespie has been invaluable with his incredible grasp of ProTools and all the high-tech gear.

Video Updates from Ardent Studios can be seen in
Jac's blog, and other updates will appear here as things develop. The storm is building...

The mixing sessions at Ardent Studios have begun - Jac Dalton and Darren Mullan are in Memphis with Gregg Brown and an exciting new member of the mixdown team.
John Hampton is a three-time Grammy Award winning engineer and producer who was taken with Jac's songs when they started to arrive at Ardent, and has come on board to help with the mixing and mastering on the album, which is titled Icarus.

The studio (Ardent Studio B) has been booked until the 21st, and we are expecting progress reports via email and video, including (it is hoped) a progress mix or two. Either way, we will have the glass master by the end of the month, and will be swinging into preparing for pre-release promo as well as completing the CD content and artwork.
A time of focus and application, but also a time of elation as we watch and hear Icarus take on its final form.

The time to fly is at hand.

Due to Gregg Brown's preference for a particular studio - "I've done my best work there", in his words - the mixing of the Jac Dalton album has been moved from Nashville to Memphis, Tennessee... The birthplace of Rock'n'Roll. Gregg, Darren and Jac will be taking up residence at Ardent Studios in Memphis to put the last touches on what is promising to be an album that will make us all proud.

Onward and Upward...

Donna and I have just returned from Adelaide, where we recorded our parts for Jac's album. The sessions went like clockwork, some amazing music was made, and we exceeded our own expectations with the level of performance that producer Darren Mullan got out of us. The songs are coming alive, and the vibe surrounding the project simply glows with the love that has gone into it. The four of us - Jac, Darren, Donna and I - resembled the space station crew, sequestered away, isolated, going where none of us had gone before. We all lifted our individual levels to meet the potential of the songs, giving all we had to see the vision realised. We did ourselves and the songs proud.

Jac Dalton - Jac is a star. He has a talent that inspires, and is one of the gentlest souls you could hope to meet. You learn to recognise kindred spirits, and Jac was one of those people for me and Donna the second we set eyes on him. An already impressive talent when we met, Jac has reached beyond his boundaries to a whole new area of his musicality with this album. He has a voice and presence that commands respect, if not admiration, as well as that undefinable something that says, "this is the real thing".

Darren Mullan - Darren is a consummate professional, an awesome talent, and a screaming nutcase. We knew we were going to like him, but we didn't know we were going to love him. His command of studio technology is awe-inspiring, his musical gifts are more than apparent in his formidable keyboard and vocal skills, and as a producer... well, we placed our performances in his hands, and you will hear the results when the album is released. You will be hearing more about Darren Mullan the producer. Much more.

Donna G. - This was the first time Donna had worked with a producer as a backing singer. You would never have guessed it. The textures and sounds that Donna brought to the songs were everything I expected, and more. She sang her heart out, took direction like a pro, and had valuable input in the arrangements of both the harmony and lead vocals. Watching her and Darren work with Jac was awesome - when you're in a studio with three singers like that, you just shut up and enjoy the ride. :o)
Proud of you, babe. x

On a personal note - I had a blast, and in the process have produced in places what I believe is some of my best work. There were a few firsts, too - I recorded my first baritone vocal, took direction on the fly, and experienced a new depth of feeling whilst giving it up for a song. Quite an experience, and one that I wouldn't have achieved without the presence of the others. I am blessed to have spent that time with those people. I'm looking forward to sharing them with you. :o)

Darren will be spending some time with the tracks before he and Jac head off to Nashville to have the mixing and mastering done by Gregg Brown. In my humble opinion, Gregg's got an easy job, and an enjoyable one. I'm looking forward to the finished product, and all that will go along with the release. We're going to enjoy getting this out to the people!

Peace,
G.

This week, the rhythm section of Mark Mayer (Drums) and Damien Steele Scott (Bass) went into the studio and laid down the beds upon which we will build the songs. Hearing a couple of rough mixes, I'm sure we're on to a good thing here. Donna and I fly off to Adelaide in a few days to record our parts, and then Darren and Jac will finish things off.
A conference call with Nashville answered a few questions and suggested some possibilities, and it was good to speak with Gregg about the project in real time.

I'm hoping to post an update during recording, so keep an eye out for a blow-by-blow description of events as they happen in the City of Churches. Once we have some new music samples to share, they will appear on Jac's MySpace page. The link below will take you straight there.

We are now at the business end of pre production - the tracks are now arranged more or less as they will be recorded, and studios are being booked for the rhythm tracks. A couple of very cool names have come up for the drum and bass parts, and I know we're going to have some great ear candy to play over when our time comes to make a contribution to the musical whole. A weekend spent with Jac and Sharon has strengthened not only our friendship, but our resolve to make this project a winner. The tracks are now sounding like and album - a very, very good album. I'm looking forward to getting our tracks down and getting this thing off to Nashville, because then... gig time!
