It was one of my goals to get reviewed in Razorcake when we started this band, and now that's happened!

BLACK PANDA:

Shake Me: 7”
Right away I liked this record, although, for the life of me, I can’t really figure out why. It’s not super original, but I think I’m enamored of the singer’s voice, which, to me, is just a perfect blend of punk rock disinterest and snottiness. Quite lovely. The songs are not fast, but still pretty punk in a, hmm, I don’t know… I was going to say “in a rock’n’roll-y” way, but let’s just say “punk” and leave it at that. I like the second side the best and “Bluebird GHQ” is my fave. Also, the artwork is great—from the pictures on the actual record label itself (the middle part, where the hole is punched), to the cover and picture of the band (which is more like a weird outline of them), it’s good stuff. Would love to see them live. Very enjoyable. Go get it! –Jennifer Federico (Super Secret)

Wow! This guy really hates us!

Black Panda - Shake Me 7” EP (Super Secret Records)

Black Panda 7
“Well, maybe the next time around, they’ll push themselves to make a better album.” Only the most idealistic (a.k.a. inexperienced or terrified of an ass-kicking) music writer would offer this sort of pipe-dream when justifying an overtly negative review. Oddly enough, Black Panda’s Shake Me 7” EP (4-songs) does this fairytale duty by existing and providing other bands with a model to avoid when crafting their respective recordings. That is, of course, if they can remember anything about Black Panda after this aggressively-forgettable EP makes its one and only visit to the turntable. Hailing from the land of too many damned bands (Austin, TX), Black Panda is but a few minutes extracted from the Goner Records blooper reel. Each track features vocals barked/sung in a boring place equidistant from both Brit-snotty and Japanese-unintelligible, along with the particular neutering of riffs, beats, and tempo that’s mired garage-punk ever since Estrus, Norton, Crypt, and Sympathy launched an early-to-mid-‘90s campaign to choke the genre with filler. Savvy listeners will be scared off by the combined primary color AND zoological/naturalist qualities of the band name, but the chosen audience is known for pathological acceptance of like-minded tedium or whatever is recommended by the demographic’s upper 10% (the founders + some great bands). When folks form bands after learning how to mimic their heroes instead of learning what was special about them in the first place, the world gets clutter like Black Panda. Not coming to an eBay auction any time soon. 300 copies. (www.supersecretrecords.com)

Our worst review yet, but still not too bad-

Black Panda - "Shake Me"

Figuring out the intricacies of these last three bands is a little like trying to have a conversation while getting punched in the kidneys, but we'll give it a go. Black Panda is a newer project of Yoshi Okai (formerly of Kodiaks) and his latest musical incarnation is also angry, but hulking and slurry as well. It starts off with a chuggy, Stooges-like jam in "Lonesome Jim," which features Okai's hoarse vocals and repetitive, crunching riffs. The band is new, and even standout track "Shake Me" is a little sloppy while still shredding. This is a group still finding their sound, so match your expectations accordingly.

From MRR-

Four tracks of solid punk rock n' roll. A touch of 70's rock, a helping of vintage garage, a hint of hardcore, and a heap of punk rock attitude and energy, It ain't gonna break any ground, but it's got enough punch and kick to have me headbanging over the keyboard. Tight and rocking, with a slight dark, off-kilter feel. (SD)

Yeah, so they're selling it, but here's what Rocket Reducer Records has to say about our record-

Black Panda - "Shake Me"

Austin's
Black Panda on Austin's Super Secret Records! Singer is Yoshi of the
Kodiaks, and he's got a pretty great Darby Crash voice. It's midtempo
punk all the way here. The Tokyo Electron influence is stated on their
Myspace, and it's definitely evident. Nice. The title track has 'em
sounding like a never-recorded Stooges song.

The first one comes from The Austin Chronicle-

Black Panda

Shake Me (Super Secret)

Super Secret also minted up 7 inches of clear vinyl for this local
quintet's debut. Former Kodiaks frontman Yoshi Okai, standout of the
"These Are the Days" exhibition at the Arthouse on Congress, crosses
John Lydon with Damo Suzuki, barking all the way to the bank on four
jagged edges of garage floor DIY. The titular highlight is a Stooge. ***.5

And this one comes from a website called Smashin' Transistors-

BLACK PANDA "Shake Me" 7inch EP

The
book on mentally mangled sounding punk rock and it's even more mentally
mangled sounding singers is has been pretty damned dogeared. There's a
world of clowns out there thinking their grunt & groan, howl &
yowl, slur & slobber is gonna resurrect Darby Crash's ghost and
it'll tell then what to do next.
Then there's Yoshi in down in
Austin, Texas. It sounds as if he has some of Darby's polyps in a jar
and gargles with them. Or maybe's it that Turbo Button that Japanese
rock-n-rollers have. They push it and everything gets put way over the
top. Then he takes shots of hot sauce to temper it. Growling, gurgling,
slurring, scowling. The band spewing out a '78 punk thing dragged
through the motor oil sludge of later Black Flag. Everything slathered
in sickness and reeking of sour humidity.

Horray! We don't suck.
