Bio
Martin Royle has been called the "paradigmatic indie rocker" (Washington Post)…but fans of his "manic live show" (The Onion) might disagree with that assessment.

Some people come for his aggressively inventive lyrics, a combination of accessible subject matter (sex, drinking, time travel) and Martin’s personal brand of whimsy. Others come to see arguably today’s best young showman in American rock ’n roll.

Martin’s music has been featured widely on television including recent episodes of Gossip Girl, Entourage and Eli Stone. In January Martin parted ways with his longtime band, critical and fan favorites Washington Social Club, to begin work on his first solo album Good Morning, Cruel World.

Current mood:  hopeful
Category: Romance and Relationships

I'm turning in my sticks.
A big thanks to everyone who ever danced along with me as I played. I had fun.

We played a show in Blacksburg awhile back. We were still a 3 piece.
It's my favorite WSC show. Traffic sucked all the way from DC,
and it took us FOREVER to get to this house...(I think it was on State or Main...808?) we finally arrive and have to play immediately because we were so late. So we load right in and set up in 10 minutes. We start playing Let The Night Begin and a few beats into it, this kid just leaps in front of us and starts dancing his ass off. The crowd followed and we played our souls out. Blood and sweat. Our set ended but people kept going, playing on the steel beams in the basement, the heating ducts...not wanting to end the party. We drank 40's and threw down the rest of the night, had a blast together, and felt very alive.
I'll never forget it. That's what the WSC was about to me. Not always, but most of the time.

I'm not giving up music, as if you wondered.
I will be playing drums with Donny Hue and the Colors and also in Olivia's solo band. So check them out.

There's also my depressing yet beautiful project "The Sleeping Secrets" which will be released in 2009 on DC's own The Kora Records.
I encourage you to visit my site at www.myspace.com/randyscope if you enjoy stupidity in audio form.

Thanks again to all you dancing and even non-dancing fans, providers of floor space, and my mates Evan, Marty, Jared and Olivia and all the friends i made along the way.

Randy

18. "Bigger Than Your Boyfriend" (Self-released/Dischord Direct)
Washington Social Club
Released: June 26

This sophomore album from these D.C.-natives is the opposite to many of the band's left-leaning peers. While Ted Leo and Al Gore paint doomsday scenarios, this five piece spends its time reminding us that its still OK to smile. Martin Royle's lyrics are politically charged and socially aware, but feathered throughout tales of sex and the everyday accomplishments that keep us all chugging along. Over rocking guitar anthems, Royle spends these dozen songs balanced on a razor's edge between a social responsibility to inform and a personal desire to look on the bright side.
Hear: "Monuments" and "Kids In The Back"

Washington Social Club was formed in the fall of 2001. At a time when DC music was in a noticeable lull, after most of the Dischord bands had stopped playing and before the Pop scene came to the forefront, Washington Social Club invigorated the city with mod/punk songs played at breakneck speed.  WSC put out its first demo in 2002 and recorded its first full length a year later.  The album, "Catching Looks" contained indie-punk classics such as "Charlie the Russian" and "Backed to the Future".  The band toured the country on various big tours.  In 2005 WSC began work on its second record "Bigger Than Your Boyfriend".    This album contains some of the band's best moments, including "Diamond Hipster Boy" (which was played on Gossip Girl and Entourage among others), "The Breakup", and "Silence to Song".  Washington Social Club is currently on extended hiatus as the various members pursue solo projects.
