In assocation with Newcastle NE1 Ltd, The Cluny & The Head of Steam are curating a series of free gigs at Newcastle's Monument.

A handful of bands will be given the opportunity to play a twenty minute set at peak times, giving them a chance to perform in front a potentially huge new audience.

These gigs are unpaid.

If you would like to be considered for a slot, please email a short band bio, along with a myspace (or other online music site) link to cluny@theheadofsteam.co.uk.

The dates we have available are:

August 20th @ 5pm
August 27th @ 5pm
September 17th @ 5pm
September 18th @ Midday

If any of these dates are particularly suitable, please include this in your email.

Many Thanks

WHERE IS THE CLUNY & HOW DO I GET THERE?

The Cluny is, admittedly, not the easiest place to find. We're located on Lime Street, in the Ouseburn Valley, directly under Byker Bridge, about a mile from Newcastle's Monument.

To see a map of our location, click here

BUSES SERVING THE CLUNY: 12, 22, 39, 40, 62 & 63 all stop on New Bridge Street – get off at the stop closest to The Tanners pub, and walk down Stepney Bank.

The Q2 Quaylink bus also now serves Ouseburn Valley, stopping on Byker Bank.

COMING BY METRO: We are pretty much directly between Manors and Byker Metro stations. It's easier to find us from Manors, but both are short walks. See map above for details.

For more information on local transport, call Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 – lines open weekdays from 7am to 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm.

I'M TRAVELLING FROM OUTSIDE NEWCASTLE TO SEE A GIG - IS THERE A CHEAP PLACE TO STAY NEARBY?

There is – the closest two hotels to us are:

NEWCASTLE CENTRAL TRAVELODGE -
http://www.travelodge.co.uk/search_and_book/hotel_overview.php?hotel_id=214

NEWCASTLE CITY CENTRE PREMIER INN - http://www.premierinn.com/pti/pTiibsRedirect.do?INNID=NEWMTI&iscsell=true

There are lots of other hotels in Newcastle city centre and the surrounding area – have a look on http://www.visitnewcastlegateshead.com/ for more options.

WHEN DO GIGS START, FINISH, AND WHAT TIME ARE BANDS USUALLY ON STAGE?

All our gigs open at 8pm (unless it's one of those rare occasions when they don't, and in these cases it will be clearly stated). Stage times are generally not finalised until the afternoon of the gig, so feel free to phone the venue to check on the stage times for individual shows on 0191 230 4474. Our curfew for gigs is usually 11pm.

WHERE CAN I BUY TICKETS FROM?

We sell tickets direct from The Cluny (either over the bar or on 0191 230 4474), via ticketweb.co.uk, from Newcastle shops RPM, Beatdown and Alt Vinyl, and from Sunderland shop Hot Rats. Outside promoters sometimes choose other online agents to got through, so if in doubt, give us a call on 0191 230 4474.

CAN I HIRE THE CLUNY FOR MY OWN EVENT?

Yes, but beware that we are very popular and most dates are booked at least two or three months in advance (Fridays and Saturdays even further in advance). Give us a call on 0191 230 4474 to discuss what we can do.

I REALLY WANT MY BAND TO PLAY AT THE CLUNY – HOW CAN I MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

The Cluny itself only promotes about 4 or 5 gigs a month on average – the rest of the time independent promoters hire the venue – so the number of gigs where we have control over the bill is limited. If you're after a support slot on one of our bills, please either drop in a demo and a biog, or email a biog and a link to your Myspace/Facebook/whatever page to
cluny@theheadofsteam.co.uk

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT US ON MYSPACE!!

You may also want to contact our regular promoters direct:

Jumpin' Hot Club specialise in blues, country, roots and Americana - http://www.jumpinhot.com/index.html

Too Far North are the best to go through for local/unsigned showcase gigs - http://www.toofarnorth.co.uk/

Canny Gigs specialise in blues and classic rock - http://www.cannygigs.com

There are many other promoters that use The Cluny too and we try to acknowledge their gigs wherever possible on our website.

CAN MY BAND BRING OUR OWN SOUND ENGINEER?

Yes, but our in-house engineer is always on hand to assist if needed.

WHAT'S PARKING LIKE AT THE CLUNY?

Not bad. There is a reasonably-sized free car park, accessed via Foundry Lane which is about 50 yards from our door, and there are two small paying car parks under the arches of Byker Bridge, also about 50 yards from us.

Click on the location map link above to get your bearings.

HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE TO GET INTO THE CLUNY & WILL I NEED ID?

The Cluny is a venue for over 18s & yes, you will need ID if we think you look under 18. We will accept passports & University photo IDs. If in doubt, always bring ID, and don't be offended if you forget to bring it and we refuse you entry.

WHAT TIME DOES THE CLUNY STAY OPEN TILL?

Monday to Thursday, we stay open till 11pm, Friday and Saturday we go that extra mile and stay open till midnight, and on a Sunday we close at 10.30pm.

I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS – HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU?

Ring us on 0191 230 4474, email us at cluny@theheadofsteam.co.uk, or speak to one of our lovely staff.

Don't contact us on Myspace, because we can't guarantee we'll reply.
