Leaping Lounge Lizards ...  An Artist Update  FINALLY!

October 2009

Hello friends in music ...

Well … its 4.00am and I am sleepless in South Perth so I thought I’d put my waking time to good use and write you all an update that is well overdue.

I could use clichés and go on about time flying or I could just say that these past seven or so weeks have been jam packed with activities and opportunities and this is the first chance I have had my head clear and time to write.

Starting where I left off ... I believe in my last update, I was getting ready for the;

Gympie National Country Music Muster …

I am sure you can all appreciate that it’s not easy living in and promoting one’s music from Perth the most isolated city in the world and so words cannot describe how thrilled and honoured I was to be included on the bill of this iconic event.

The Muster experience is one that I will always cherish ... forget the stinking hot winter weather and the need to rush out and buy a new wardrobe from the festival markets! The atmosphere and audience cheer made me so very, very proud to be Australian and I think the crowd pictures posted on the
Muster Website say it all.

My hat goes off to Marylou Goodall who co-ordinated the exemplary entertainment, and the APEX Club of Gympie with its associated sister clubs who were responsible for the organisation of the festival in general. I have never been to, or seen an event so huge and so well run with so few obvious problems … and with so many happy Aussie campers – numbered in the tens of thousands!

As for my own performances … in the local vernacular; being a ‘Muster Virgin’ was a learning curve. Audiences were very appreciative and even though travelling solo was tough, it was not insurmountable. If I am included in 2010, it will be with a backing band!

USA Tour …

I left my bags packed after Gympie because just one week later, I was on a plane to Nashville.

Given that earlier this year the title track from my album, Once Again made it into the New Music Weekly Charts and according to tracking reports had been played over 9000 times on US radio, it was timely for me to visit the US again to keep my profile up.

My schedule included 19 appearances, ranging from songwriter rounds, to artist spotlights, festivals and special guest spots at venues in Nashville and it’s surrounding regions. I also attended the Americana Music Conference as well as participated in separate co-writing sessions with Nashville pros, the gorgeous, gifted
Deborah Allen, and the talented David Walker from Walker Music Enterprises.

Every day had something happening that was a highlight to remember … each one special in its own right – suffice it to say, my thanks and links are listed below or you can check out past performances and where I have actually appeared
HERE.

While I rarely get many photos of my gigs (travelling solo unfortunately leaves you at the mercy of others), I did get some filmed footage thanks to the help of young cameraman, Ian Ratliff of
Laughing Penguin Publicity. We hope to put the adventures of this Pop Tart for Old Farts eventually into a documentary!

In the meantime, you can view footage of my performances on the
Billy Block Show at 12th and Porter in Nashville ... HERE.

Back in Australia …

Back on home turf just 24 hours and it was off to rehearsal for the WA Showcase of Country Girls and Guys. The event was held last Sunday Oct 18!

A wonderful afternoon was had by all … we played a big selection of traditional country songs to an overflowing appreciative house. It was a hugely successful afternoon and so fantastic to be included in a country music experience in my own backyard … thanks to
WA Country Music Promotions for staging the event!

To the future …

Apart from regular gigs here with my guitarist extraordinaire Brad Johnson, or as a solo acoustic performer, I have another Girls Gone Gospel Show in the pipeline, scheduled for November 22, at the Italian Club in Fremantle, then guest spots at the Rocky Country Music Christmas Club, The Born in Boots Christmas Party and a Country Dance Spectacular on New Years’ Eve and then … yes … TAMWORTH!

This time, we will be driving across Australia and I will be picking up gigs along the way… I am waiting for confirmation of some spots, but you can check my already confirmed gig guide
HERE.

Lounge Lizard …

Recent stats and reports from
NfS Publicity indicate strong airplay and rotation of my radio single; Lounge Lizard and so I would sincerely like to thank all the radio presenters and stations that 'Once Again', have been so supportive of my music. THANK YOU so very much!

Radio presenters, if you are receiving this newsletter, you can expect an invitation to a private meet and greet in Tamworth 2010 … my way of saying thanks in person!

If you are a CMAA member, please also consider voting for the track when it opens!

Speaking of Once Again, I was recently informed that a line dance has been choreographed to the song. That makes three dances that I know of that have been developed to various tunes of mine! Thanks then, must go to dance enthusiasts as well!

So ... there's my news in a not so small nutshell!

If you have read this far, I appreciate your interest ... stay well and make, play or request great music!

Warmest wishes from

Hello friends in music ...

I hope the last month or so has been good to you! This is just a quick update on my recent happenings.

The past ...
My June trip to Nelson Bay for the
Blue Water Festival and then later on to Sydney was fantastic ... the feedback from capacity crowds at the shows we did for the Salamander Bay Shopping Centre and the Seabreeze Hotel was wonderful, with punters wanting MORE from all the WJO artists! Fingers crossed that in 2010, the stars will align and I will be able to return for next year's festivities.

It was great to catch up with my East Coast music friends at the festival - fans and artists alike. One memorable highlight being the WJO Songwriters' in the Round show at the Seabreeze Hotel. A special thank you to
WJO Distribution for going to the trouble to organise and promote all the events so well. Thanks to Stephen Cheney too ... for his generous contribution in supplying the PA for us nomadic artists.

And the thank yous still continue ... to all the radio presenters and stations (mentioned in my last update) who took time out to schedule interviews with me - it was so good to catch up. Sincere appreciation also, goes to Ann Lund-Schulz and the Crombies for their very kind hospitality.

The ....Sydney.... part of my NSW tour was icing on the cake. I had a ball performing on the
Canterbury Country Show at the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL, at the Antill Park Gold Club, Smithfield RSL and Blacktown Country Music Club. Plans are in progress to return to some of those venues on my way to ..Tamworth.. in January 2010.

Now, the present ...
Those of you have gotten to know me a little, would be aware that in the face of adversity or disappointment, I tend to roll with the punches, dust myself off and move on. So when my application for a songwriting fellowship fell through, I decided to enroll in the
Berklee College of Music and now I am currently studying a course in songwriting with them. It's a three month commitment with daily assignments due, so it has been very demanding, but just the right injection my spirit needed to get back to one of my first joys - songwriting, with the bar somewhat raised!

As for the near future ...
There are a few exciting ventures happening ... first and foremost is the release of my next single,
Lounge Lizard ... out to Australian radio sometime this week. So please keep an ear and eye out for it!

The
Gympie National Country Music Muster is fast approaching too and I am sooo looking forward to performing there and making new friends!

Gig times are confirmed and I will be at the following venues...

Wednesday 26th at 10.20 am at the Muster Club

Thursday 27th at 1.10pm at the Tavern
Friday 28th at 4.45pm at the Outback Bar

And a little further in the distant future ...
After Gympie, I head off to the ....US.... to attend the Americana Music Conference and perform some shows while there.

Already confirmed are showcases at;
The Belvidere Market Cafe, The BBQ Caboose, The Billy Block Show, the Old Time Radio Show, Richards Cajun Cafe (promotional poster below) Rudi's Country Music Cafe, Second Ave Cafe, Nashville Cowboy Church and The Smoky Mountains Cowboy Church.

There are other ....US.... and local performances in the pipeline, details of which need confirmation, but more of that in my next update!

So until then, stay safe and play, make or request great music!

Warmest wishes from

Connie Kis xx

Hello Friends in Music...

So, May has already come and gone! According to Einstein, time is a relative thing, but another theory suggests that the perception of time is related to our heartbeat rate ... hmm

Well, however we perceive it, it seems like it was only last week that I sent out an update and just a couple of weeks ago that I was in Nashville.

During that visit, I was afforded the distinct privilege of having a private tour of the historic RCA Studios where many of America's country music Icons recorded their classic hits.

With his wealth of knowledge and vast experience, our distinguished host, Fred Vail of Treasure Isle Recorders, painted a vivid picture of how the industry used to be then - so very different to how it is now. Yet some similarities have persisted when it comes to the effort, hard work and struggles that artists experience.

That is why I am so pleased that ‘Once Again’ the single I had released to US radio earlier this year, was played over 8,053 times (according to the 'Spins Tracking System') on at least 102 US radio stations and made the Top 30 New Music Weekly Independent Charts and the Top 50 New Music Weekly Main Country Charts.

No mean feat, for a solo Independent artist, operating as chief cook, bottle washer, singer and songwriter!
Other absolutely fantastic news is that I will be performing at Australia's National Country Music Muster in Gympie this August. I am so excited and looking forward to the festival – I can hardly wait to make music, meet up with old friends and forge new ones – fans, musicians and artists alike.

Now to the present … I am very much looking forward to my tour of Sydney and the NSW Central Coast this week, where I will be performing at the Blue Water Festival, thanks to WJO Distribution, who not only distribute all my albums and merchandise but also organised the showcases.
Then it’s on to Sydney for another week of performances and radio interviews. Those who are in the area can check out my schedule below.

So … until next time, thank you for your support of my passion. Stay safe and make, or play great music!

Artist Update: April 2009 ...

Hello Friends in music …....

In a recent interview with Today’s Country Magazine I was asked what piece of advice could I offer someone who is looking to break into the music industry.

I thought long and hard and came up with the following...

Be true to yourself … allow no-one to steal your dreams … honour your talent … stay focused … work hard … work harder … work even harder still … be polite … be persistent … be passionate … be professional … listen to constructive criticism … act on that criticism  … grow your skills … expect no favours … help yourself (and others will eventually want to help you) …  no-one is more interested in your career than you (so don’t whine about your circumstances)  … doing business is a two-way street, (so always make your deals a ‘win/win’) … respect others … respect yourself … believe in your purpose … watch out for the sharks … and most importantly, give sincere thanks for the many blessings you have been given and for the ones you will receive in the future.....

A bit long-winded I know, but it sums up my philosophy and experiences completely. And so with a focus on my closing comment above, I have to say that I am eternally grateful for the experiences I have been able to enjoy since Tamworth earlier this year.

Just over a week ago, I had the pleasure of performing at the Horsham Country Music Festival in Victoria … not only on the main stage during the weekend but down town on Saturday and at the Town Hall on Sunday afternoon.  The whole weekend was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.  The added bonus being, that it was great to catch up with old friends in music and make new ones … both fans and artists.

Only 48 hours prior to Horsham, I was on a plane heading home to Perth from Nashville via Tokyo …  apart from the swollen ankles and excess baggage under my eyes from the gruelling 37 hour journey, I still feel blessed that today’s world is a much smaller place thanks to technology.

My USA visit was yet again a fantastic experience in terms of learning and opportunity.

Attending CRS (Country Radio Seminars) in Nashville, gave me an insight into the mechanisms of the market that I am so passionate about.   Lots to think about, and much to still learn!

‘Once Again’ the title track to my album is out to US radio now, and has just entered the New Music Weekly (NMW) country charts as an ‘Up and Comer’.  Spins Tracking Systems report that of the NMW reporting stations, the track has been played 3,083 times since its release in the US.   I have to stop sometimes and take a deep breath to appreciate that this is really happening.

Performances at all my showcases all went well (even with a blonde moment or two) … I thoroughly enjoyed performing on the Billy Block Show, (you can check out YouTube and Billy Block’s Channel, if you want to see it), the Cowboy Churches, James Breedwell’s writer’s nights and on the CRS Showcase at the Old Ernest Tubbs Record Store in downtown Nashville.  Not to forget the live to Air WLIJ Old Time Radio Show at the Bar-B-Que Caboose in Lynchburg and of course regular solo acoustic gigs at the historic Browns Diner in Nashville and the San Miguel Coffee Co in Winchester.  Thank you so much to all involved for your support in helping me get the gigs!

Press coverage was first-rate too … with a feature in the Listen Up section of Country Weekly in March and reviews in the Nashville Music Guide as well as in Today’s Country.   Another round of thanks goes to those who helped with the exposure.

As for the future … well on the immediate front, my clip  "Kiss My Cheek" will be aired on Country Crossroads show 3, tomorrow Thursday April 2nd at 8pm (est) followed by repeats on Fri, Mon and Wed on Foxtel Optus & Austars Aurora Community Channel 183.  Local times in WA need to be checked for confirmation.   My other clip; ‘Wicked Game’ will be aired will be soon announced.  Thanks to Country Crossroads for the opportunity!

This weekend sees a gathering of WA Country Girls and Guys, a special showcase performance at the Italian Club in Fremantle on Sunday at 1.00pm, playing a host of classic country songs.

So, until next time … stay well, and make (or listen to) great music!

Warmest wishes from

Connie Kis

From Connie Kis:   February 09

 ....

As the memories of Tamworth 2009 begin to fade from the pages of my mind, some highlights and downlights still linger …....

The first, being the demise of the Tamworth Country Music Express.  A whole year of eager anticipation - given that I had been booked to travel and perform on it as a host throughout the Festival – all dissipated in the space of minutes when I received the news on Christmas Eve.

Then it hit me … all the re-thinking, re-organising and re-arrangements (accommodation and travel) that needed urgent attention in the very short time after New Year – all to honour my 22 (or so) appearance commitments in Tamworth.

Needless to say, I got there … and survived the sizzling heat and musical frenzy of the Australian Country Music Capital.

With blood blisters under my calluses from playing so many hours, I returned home exhausted!

Highlights (in no special order) were of course the honour of being MC at the Peoples’ Choice Awards, hosting my own media meet and greet which was generously sponsored by Drayton’s Wines, the many radio interviews that took place, and jamming with some very talented artists, namely Terry Lee Barker and Rick Bartlett (we sure cooked in that session!) and the band, Bushfire who made me an honorary member as a result of my mean cabassa playing – we had so much fun!

Last but not least, performing to enthusiastic, sweaty audiences – the main reason why us West Aliens make the sojourn to the Country Capital in the East at Festival time.

I have so many people to thank for their support in helping me get there and making my trip a success  … they are (again in no special order);

  • Jim Guider of the Musicians Headquarters … for helping me find a new venue for my media meet and greet at very short notice, and giving me with the opportunity to play on the Atrium Stage.....

  • All the wonderful radio and media folk who took time out from their busy schedule to come say ‘hello’ at my meet and greet and other gigs.....

  • Drayton’s Wines for their continued support and sponsorship, as well as providing me with a safe place in town to leave my music gear when not performing.....

  • Jackson McKay and sideman Terry Lee Barker (an Ayers Guitars sponsored artist in his own right) who put on a sterling performance as my guest artists at the meet and greet.....

  • Robyn Fitzgerald who spent hours preparing the delicious finger food for guests at the same meet and greet. ....

  • Ros Solberg from WA Country Music Promotions for helping me find accommodation at such very short notice....

  • Axiom Entertainment for their belief in me as an artist and subsequent bookings … ....

  • Andrew Clermont for the privilege of being part of the Supper Club experience and the honour of playing on the same stage that is graced by some of the world’s finest, most unique, most talented musicians and artists. ....

  • Sam Smyth and TSA for their showcase opportunities and Daryl Kirkup for inviting me to be part of the Tamworth Roundup at the LBS Auditorium and to co-host the Festival FM Breakfast show.....

  • June Underwood for the candid photos....

  • Bob Kirchner for the invitation and privilege of being involved in the Peoples’ Choice Awards

Thank you very much to all!

So … now to the future … this weekend sees yet another performance of the Girls Gone Gospel troupe that I am involved in.  We will be singing on the main stage at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival on Sunday.

Then it’s home and off to the USA on Tuesday, where I will be an artist delegate at the Country Radio Seminars (CRS 40) held in Nashville and performing on some showcases while there.  (Schedule below)

Late March, I look forward to being a guest at the Horsham Country Music Festival and catching up with friends and audiences on the east coast again..

So until next time …....

Stay well, make (or listen to) great music and spare a thought and a prayer for the many bushfire victims …....

Warmest wishes from
