Terry Holder continues to explore her passions through her heartfelt and gutsy
songs. The CD delivers her emotionally driven songs around lyrics that take you
on a journey with flashes of abandon, heartbreak, love, social and
self-awareness. The CD was recorded with a stellar cast of studio musicians
including folk scene favorite Freebo in Seattle Washington and Anchorage Alaska.
Recognized for her talent as a songwriter Terry performed in 2008 at the
Kerrville Folk Festival as a “New Folk Finalist.” Today she tours
performing at House Concerts, festivals and other venues continuing to build a
loyal following. "It's very humbling and gratifying when people like your music.
If I can touch one person with a song, then I feel that I've accomplished
something great in my life." “If you haven’t paid attention to the music of
Terry Holder, slap yourself, hard. That’s pretty much how I felt when I first
listened to her. I first came across her at Folk Alliance a couple of years ago.
I didn’t know who she was at the moment, but I knew something special was
happening. ‘Ticket To The Moment’ is Terry’s third album. ‘Cross Your Mind’
rocks out with a hint of sassiness that’s provocative. Your toes end up tapping
to the strong backbeat before you know it. ‘In God’s Eyes’ continues to show off
Terry’s amazing ability to craft lyrics that evoke a response, whether positive
or negative. ‘Wrecking Ball’ is a classic country & western ballad. You’ll
love her wonderful cover of the Everly Brothers tune ‘When Will I be Loved?’”

Release: BARBARA GARRIEL - Ample Patience - - - - Distributed to Folk Radio by Hudson Harding. Mailing Date: Oct. 1 Haven’t received your copy? Request offline. - - - - - “I’m silver, not gold; feminine, not frilly; a combination of Ginger and MaryAnn, and full of a deep sense of gratitude,” Barbara declares in an interview about her debut album, “Ample Patience.” With this CD, Barbara offers a simmering blend of original blues, country, jazz, and folk-rock. Her music radiates the confidence of a strong woman and the passion of a born storyteller. “A bluesy, rootsy orientation is enhanced by the beautiful and sensitive production by Tom Prasada-Rao and Steve Young. They have captured Barbara's unpretentious, warm voice perfectly. A good listen.” - Kenny Edwards (founding/original member of The Stone Poneys). Garriel’s songwriting explores an intelligent and refreshing musical blend of modern blues, ballads, country, and folk-rock, and her original music and heartfelt lyrics speak to anyone with a zest for life. “Ample Patience” features songs about yearning and desire, freedom and friendship, betrayal and found love and is a collection that’s been called “gutsy, gritty, sexy, vibrant mixture of piercingly honest music” (Alan Haynes, singer-songwriter) and “sweet, with a bit of an edge that is strangely reminiscent of something from long ago” (Laundry Room Music). Track 4, “Too Late For That Now” was selected as one of three finalists (and grand prize winner) in the R&B category of the international John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Jeffrey Barnes, member of the Grammy Award-winning band, “Brave Combo”, shared his talents on clarinet, sax, harmonica, and flute. Singer-songwriter, Cary Cooper, can be heard on harmony vocals on “Lock, Stock, and Barrel.” While Barbara’s musical influences are many (from Carole King to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Gershwin to Joplin, Mary Travers and Kim Carnes) her gutsy, sensual style remains her own. Her vocals have been compared to Laura Nyro, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, and Tracy Chapman. “Barbara Garriel possesses a voice that is as rich and sensuous as red velvet. She is the girl-next-door dressed in the finest black leather. Her well-crafted songs reflect a warm and spirited soul who is feisty, flirty, and fun-loving, all at the same time.” (Kathy Moran, singer-songwriter) http://www.barbaragarriel...com/ - - - -

Release: ZOE MULFORD - Bonfires - - - - Distributed to Folk Radio by Hudson Harding. Mailing Date: Sept. 30 - Oct. 2 Not sure if you are on Hudson Harding distribution list? Request your copy offline - - - - - A set by songwriter Zoe Mulford is like a small volume of short stories - evocative, beautifully crafted, and endlessly varied. With a clear voice, an ear for poetry, and a slightly skewed sense of humor, she may take on any subject from polar exploration to domestic sabotage. Zoe was raised near Philadelphia, learned to play the guitar in the picking circles of North Carolina, and came into her own as a performer in Washington, DC. She had released two albums on Azalea City Recordings, an award-winning folk and roots label based in Takoma Park, MD, and was gaining notice as a touring artist when her spouse’s job brought another move - this time to England. Since then, she has been making the rounds of British folk clubs and festivals, often by public transport, equipped with a guitar, a banjo, a small rolling suitcase, and a large umbrella. She has also returned to tour in the US, including appearances as an emerging artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and a New Folk finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival. October 2009 sees the release of her third album, “Bonfires” on Azalea City Recordings. Celebrating folk traditions from Appalachia to Liverpool, the mix of original and traditional songs presents a cast of wayward ghosts, takers of chances, and practitioners of love against the odds. Recorded in the hills of Yorkshire by Brian Bedford (Artisan), “Bonfires” features musicians from both sides of the Atlantic, including English ceilidh fiddler Tom Fairbairn, Canadian bassist Al Parrish (Tanglefoot), Canadian-American percussionist Cheryl Prashker (RUNA) and members of the popular Manchester-based Dr. Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band. The title is taken from “Welcome In Another Year”. Originally written for the Hudson Harding Holiday Sampler #1, the song draws on traditions from all over the world and all around the calendar that mark the beginning of the new year with fire. “This original song sounds like it could have been around for hundreds of years, performed at pagan-inspired bonfires at the Winter Solstice, or at a News Year’s Eve. In my opinion, "Welcome in Another Year" is a song that deserves a long, long life and many performances by trad-leaning folkies all over the world.” Larry Hoyt [Common Threads ,WAER-FM, Syracuse NY] Some sparser arrangements honor the spirit of the English folk club, where microphones - and sometimes even instruments - are regarded as an unnecessary intrusion between the singer and the listeners. “The Wise Maid” (inspired by one too many English folk songs about a morning in May) is sung a cappella in the traditional style. “Red Rocking Chair” and a cover of Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” are powerfully delivered with solo voice and clawhammer banjo. Dana and Susan Robinson: Big Mystery | Dana and Susan Robinson’s latest CD release, Big Mystery, sings of the enduring beauty and prolific life force that exists all around us. With their trademark guitar and mountain banjo pairing, Dana and Susan effortlessly blend contemporary material with an oldtime mountain attitude. From the whimsical and pop-inflected, springtime-in-the-north setting of the title track, to the Afro-Celtic strains of “Waiting For Gordon” these songs are postcards from the magical and forgotten places they travel.
Dana says about Big Mystery, “We sing about place and our innate connection with the landscape. These places have stories embedded in them that can teach us about who we are and why we are here. With these songs my hope is that people will feel more connected to and take better care of where we live.”
Dana was a finalist in Kerrville new folk in 2000 and a finalist in the Mountain Stage new folk in 2003. His albums “The Trade,” “Avenue Of The Saints,” and “Round My Door” have all charted in the top 5 on the Folk DJ charts. “Big Mystery” is Dana’s ninth full-length recording since his debut in 1994, and Dana and Susan’s third together as a duo. Dana’s instrumental tune, “Crossing the Platte,” from “The Trade” (2000) can be heard in the new Ken Burns documentary, The National Parks, America’s Best Idea.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * Release: MARK STEPAKOFF Some Assembly Required * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Stepakoff is the New England writer with a keen perspective laced with Zevonesque deadpan humor and John Prine-like wordplay. With a sensibility reminiscent of contemporary songwriters like Robbie Fulks and Todd Snider, Stepakoff's rich lyrics and ingenious rhymes seasoned with acoustic guitar, fiddle and mandolin provide plenty of laughs. And, Stepakoff displays his versatility on several more poignant numbers as well on his latest release, “Some Assembly Required.” Stepakoff’s typically wacky perspectives, clever wordplay, and deadpan presentation are all present in this great writer’s latest collection. Starting with the title track’s rhymes for “quagmire” and “congeal”, through the firmly tongue-in-cheek “Vicarious” and the rollicking ode to the hangover breakfast “Huevos Rancheros”, we get just what we expect from Stepakoff, the accomplished and humorous wordsmith. Elsewhere, such as “Worst Kept Secret,” a classic jazz-style cheating ballad, the spooky “Dead Man’s Hand” and the poignant “Chevy Biscayne”, Stepakoff cements his reputation as one of the finest overall writers around. Straight through to the final track – a slow, beautiful Southern culture song “When Vernon Moved From Tupelo” – this is truly a classic collection, produced by the accomplished Tom Eaton and featuring some of the finest studio musicians you’ll find including Duke Levine (guitar), Joyce Anderson (fiddle) and Sean Staples (mandolin). Even prior to its release, four of the tracks from “Assembly” have earned Stepakoff songwriting awards from three separate sources: the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, American Songwriter magazine, and the Dallas Songwriters Association. Stepakoff, a Boston-based songwriter, has received First Prize in both the Great American Song Contest and American Songwriter magazine's lyric contest. He is also a two-time finalist in the USA Songwriting Competition and received honorable mention in the folk music category in this year's John Lennon Songwriting Contest. In a city with no shortage of songwriting talent, long-time Boston indie-music journal The Noise dubbed him " Boston 's biggest songwriting secret." His previous release, “There Goes The Neighborhood,” reached number 21 on the national Folk-DJ chart in 2005 and was called “unbeatably original” by Performing Songwriter magazine. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hudson Harding currently representing: - ANGELO M.: Steelwork - BARBARA GARRIEL: Ample Patience - CARLA ULBRICH: Live From Outer Space - DANA & SUSAN ROBINSON: - DALA: Everyone Is Someone - MASON DARING: self-titled - LIZ LONGLEY: Somewhere In The Middle - MARK STEPAKOFF: Some Assembly Required - SWEATER SET: Surprise Visit - TERRY HOLDER: Ticket To The Moment - ZOE MULFORD: Bonfires * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hudson Harding Music - Folk Radio Promotion "committed to the living tradition of folk music... connecting independent artists with independently programmed folk radio."' * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Release: ANGELO M. Steelwork * * * *
* * * * * * * * * * Emerging on the music scene after a steel mill
bankruptcy, Angel M. made the unlikely transition from Pennsylvania steelworker
to touring Americana artist. With guitar influences from likes of Ry
Cooder, Chet Atkins, Duane Allman and Leo Kottke, reviews hail him as a
brilliant guitarist with an excellent voice and call his performance powerful.
His most recent collection, "Steelwork," showcases Angelo and all his assets.
He's a humble blue collar man from a Pennsylvania steel mill. But there's
nothing understated about the talent of this bluesy virtuoso finger style player
and flawless writer. Authenticity is at the core of Angelo's writing. His songs,
autobiographical at times, are soulfully sung and seasoned with experience and
retrospection. Armed with his six tring, Dobro, mandolin and harp, he's
down-and-dirty, no-holds-barred -- an authentic link in the roots-Americana
chain as a singer, player and songwriter. Angelo is a link in the chain
with timeless music, whether its the subterranean Dylan-esque opening track,
"Every Kind Of Blues," or the mix of country blues with Prine-like finesse of
the following track, "Never Be The Same." Perhaps it's the Smither-stomping
blues of "That Train" or the Knopfler-haunted "Ain't Our Love Song." Whatever
you hear in there, when you follow it all up with a raucous cover of Gregg
Allman's "Come And Go Blues," Angelo M. puts his stamp on timeless Americana
music with this collection he calls "Steelwork." A favorite at festivals,
Angelo received a standing ovation at the Johnstown (PA) Folk Fest. At the
Kalamazoo (MI) Blues Festival he was deemed one of the highlights. This year
Angelo was selected from over five hundred artists to perform at the Falcon
Ridge Folk Festival (NY) Emerging Artist Showcase. Last year he cast a strong
impression at the Folk Alliance regional conferences as a Main Showcase Artist
at FAR West and a Tricentric Showcase Artist at NERFA. Angelo garnered honors
int he prestigious Mountain Stage NewSong and Billboard song contests. The PBS
TV Series RoadTrip Nation is featuring "That Train" in one of its episodes this
Fall. Originally from Philadelphia, Lancaster County, PA now serves as
home base for Angelo as he tours throughout the US. And whether it's his
intricate finger style on the acoustic guitar, some searing slide work on his
Dobro, or the high and lonesome strains of his mandolin, you'll be sure to enjoy
this gifted artist who is just beginning to hit his
stride. Angelo's website * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

DAVID FERRARD
Across The Troubled Wave
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
At the International Folk Alliance 2008, Scottish-American folk songwriter
David Ferrard made an impression creating significant buzz as a highly
recommended artist amongst the folk radio community. David received a
Scottish Arts Council grant to collect ballads with Scottish origins in North
Carolina. He also spent time at the Woody Guthrie Foundation in New York
City researching Guthrie's peace songs.
In the year of Scotland's Homecoming, David releases his new album,
"Across The Troubled Wave." This collection of Scottish and
American folk songs explores his transatlantic roots, highlighting a wealth of
shared traditions connecting the two countries. Born and raised in
Edinburgh to a Scottish father and an American mother, the singer-songwriter
lays down his pen to interpret thirteen songs, some contemporary, most
traditional, including compositions by Robert Burns and Stephen Foster.
David recorded "Across The Troubled Wave" in a small studio in the
Blue Ridge Mountains with multi-instrumentalist bluegrass and old-time player
Josh Goforth. In Josh's mountain community in Western North Carolina, an
area first settled by Scottish emigrants, David learned from traditional ballad
singers and he gathered some of the material he interprets on the album.
Josh's guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and bass accompaniment lends an old-time
yet contemporary feel to David's interpretations.
David says: "My mother is from the Appalachians so these songs struck a
real chord. It was fascinating to hear so many folk songs, which must
have traveled over from Scotland hundreds of years ago, being kept alive."
David, an accomplished and honored writer in his own right, released his debut
album in 2008. "Broken Sky" was named Album Of The Week by
Scotland's national paper, "The Sunday Herald," BBC Radio Scotland,
and Celtic Music Radio.
An activist in the true folk tradition, David runs a songwriting project and
label called "Songs For Change" (www.songsforchange.com). He
produced and released "Not In Our Name," a compilation CD about teh
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, featuring Eliza Gilkyson, Dick Gaughan, Jez Lowe,
Rory McLeod and Mark Erelli among others.
David will be attending NERFA this year.

Award-winning Songwriter Carla Ulbrich brings her wry wit and wacky songs to every performance. Here the folk scene’s favorite smart aleck is captured live in front of a studio audience. Recorded in the XM Radio studios: Carla Ulbrich, “Live From Outer Space” A comical singer-songwriter and guitarist from South Carolina currently living in New Jersey, Carla has a love of wordplay and a keen observational eye. She is primarily known for her humorous songs about such topics as wedgies, Waffle House, Klingons, and how rich she would be if she had the copyright on the 'F' Word. Compared to Weird Al and Seinfeld, Carla is also an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist influenced by the likes of Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins. On her fifth release, “Live From Outer Space,” Carla captures what she does best in front of a live studio audience. Starting with an irreverent alternative to a classic (“Let It Go”) re-written for the hard-to-please gift recipient, Carla moves on to a pair of love songs (“My Love” and “I Hope You’re Happy Now”) to show what happens when a cynical, self-deprecating self-proclaimed smart aleck attempts to write a wedding song for her friends and a mushy love song for her husband. Comedy bits, audience reaction, and songs fill the CD with highlights including re-visit to her “hit” (“What If Your Girlfriend Was Gone”) with a parody of itself in “Big Hit Medley.” Irreverent and smart, clever and uninhibited, observant and outrageous, Carla is captured in fine form here on her latest recording. The Morristown Green acknowledges the magic that happens when Carla performs in a review of a show: “She's one of Dr. Demento's favorites, and now we know why. How many women can sing in Klingon, after all? Carla Ulbrich, the Queen of Parody, can make surgical procedures a laughing matter… she crooned about losing one's derriere, stealing boyfriends and experiencing hospital life in all its invasive glory.” Carla earned credits on the scene early on as a songwriter (1999 South Florida Folk Fest Songwriting Competition best upbeat song, and best overall song) and as a guitarist (1998 2nd place in the Gamble Rogers Fest fingerpicking contest). She tours in both the US and England, receives international airplay, and has been featured on USA Network, Dr. Demento, Sirius Satellite and the BBC. Among a list of honors, she won Novelty Song of the Year from Just Plain Folks in 2006. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hudson Harding currently representing: - Angelo M.: Steelwork - Cary Cooper: Dirty Little Secret - Carla Ulbrich: Live From Outer Space - David Ferrard: Across The Troubled Wave - Dala: Everyone is Someone - Hope Machine: Big Green - Jakob’s Hollow: The Legend of Bobby The Kid - Liz Longley: Somewhere In The Middle - Mark Stepakoff: Some Assembly Required

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Release DALA: Everyone is Someone * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala have come a long way in a short time. The two best friends, who met in their high school music class and wrote their first song together in 2002, have since performed at Toronto’s legendary Massey Hall a total of six times. Darlings of the Canadian music scene, Dala are now poised to bring their fresh brand of acoustic pop music to the world.
Drawing upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Dala write songs that are both catchy and insightful. Amanda’s ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila’s velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become their trademark.
Dala’s new album “Everyone Is Someone” is a wonderful journey for the listener, bringing together all the elements that set this talented duo apart. The first single, “Levi Blues” is a delightful throwback to the songs of the 50's and early 60's. From the very first line, "I've been waiting for a guy like you; you've been waiting to be my guy too", fans will be hooked.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Release: CARY COOPER - Dirty Little Secret * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Cary Cooper is a woman to watch. She is turning heads and opening hearts everywhere she goes. Cary has spent the last ten years rediscovering her passion, perfecting her craft and learning to tell the truth. The fruit of her labor is shamelessly clear on her new 2009 release, DIRTY LITTLE SECRET.
On DLS, Cary eloquently says the things we ALL think, but rarely have the courage to say; and she does so within the framework of hauntingly beautiful melodies and hip grooves.
Mary Gauthier met Cary in 2007 at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival where Cary was a finalist in the Songwriters Showcase. Mary sings background vocals on one of the songs on DLS and has this to say about Cary's latest project: "Cary Cooper's new CD has captured me. It is so very well written, well sung and well recorded that I've found myself listening over and over again for the sheer pleasure of it. Her song stories are tales of a woman's hard earned wisdom as she embarks on that lonely spiritual journey that leads her to her self. Cary's voice is disarming and seductive, beautiful and inviting, but beware, these tales are not all easy to swallow. The road is rocky and the lessons come hard. But what an honest ride she takes us on! This is a wonderful record, and I hope that people will discover it and fall in love with it like I have." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hudson Harding currently representing: - Amy Speace: The Killer In Me - Cary Cooper: Dirty Little Secret - Fred Smith: Texas - Hope Machine: Big Green - James O'Malley: Tales To Tell - Kate Graves: Crooked Trees - Liz Mitchell: Not The Whether of Summer - Loretta Hagen: Sundown Till Dawn - Mara Levine: Mara's Gems - Meg Braun: Tomboy Princess - Terry Kitchen: Summer To Snowflakes Hudson Harding Music - Folk Radio Promotion "committed to the living tradition of folk music... connecting independent artists with independently programmed folk radio."'
