Upon opening The Black's recently released EP, Dead Love Songs, one is greeted by the liner notes: "I always win. I get my way. I pray the Lord my soul to take," framed by female silhouettes that would be more at home on a trucker's mud-flaps. Despite its ill-advised packaging and artwork, Dead Love Songs is a catchy, solidly-produced rock album that won't disappoint.
The infectious keyboard and guitar combo in the first ten seconds of "Green Eyed Girl (Why Would You Lie to Me?)" immediately initiates the listener into The Black's brand of blues-infused rock. A song of anger and betrayal, it's an apt starting place for the passionate EP. "Sad and Lonely You," the final song on the EP, exhibits more focused emotion; its vocals are less frenetic than the rest of the album, and its drumming is more precise. Whereas the beginning of the album is turbulent, its conclusion has a mellowed, melancholy tone, like the wisdom gained after a bittersweet break-up. Sandwiched in between are "Caroline," which shows the breadth of The Black's repertoire, and "Young Girls," a simple, hummable song with echoes of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine."
Confident lead singer Tim Hansen has picked up a lot of experience in his 15 years as a New England performer. Hansen, reminiscent of a throaty Steven Tyler, sounds closely tied to his Worcester roots and shows few traces of an acoustic/synth-pop chrysalis. Although The Black sounds at times like a secular Creed with stronger drive and fewer soaring vocals, the band certainly has wings. You can picture them playing somewhere between a frat house basement and a bar in Bridgewater.
Dead Love Songs is the sort of unpretentious, music-driven rock that eschews glossy liner notes and is magnetic enough to keep the listener coming back for more. (M-80 Records)

THE BLACK M-80 Studios Dead Love Songs 4-song CD Thank You T Max! I get to review a band that gets it. The Black puts the roll back into rock 'n' roll. This CD is fantastic! The Black is a five piece band hailing from Wormtown, and they crank out old school roll 'n' roll reminiscent of Steppenwolf and Captain Beyond, but with a fresh, modern sound. The arrangements of two Gibson guitars and bass, along with Hammond and Wurlitzer organs, over a crankin' downbeat are awesome. I love the dynamics, especially in the vocals. The harmonies are superb. "Young Girls" has great punchy guitar hooks and an addictive quality that makes you want to sing along. "Sad And Lonely" is just as catchy. Its slightly remorseful lyrics suck you in and you still find yourself rockin' out. The standout track, "Caroline," delivers the goods with a great use of vocal and guitar phrasing. My only complaint about this disc is that there are only four songs. TEASERS! Damn you! I want more songs! I hope I get to see them sometime soon. If you get the chance, do so. This disc rules! THE BLACK - "DEAD LOVE SONGS" (Produced, Engineered, and Mixed by Pete DeGraff and The Black at M-80 Studios Worcester, MA; Mastered by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance East Studios Allston, MA)
If The Black sound recognizable, it may be because all five members have been making music in the local scene for five to fifteen years. Though the sound of most of their previous bands was punk influenced, this EP is more straight up rock and goes further back into time. The opener "Green Eyed Girl (Why Would you Lie to Me)" is one of the most frantic, spastic songs on the record or for that matter on any record that I've heard all year (it's only September so there's still time for someone to top it).
"Green Eyed Girl" barrels out the door with chaotic drumbeats, meaty guitar riffs, and a caffeinated keyboard part that brings old B52s records to mind. There's more than that going on as the song's buildup leads to a J.Geils band like house party rockin' sing along to the bridge of, "Misery loves company, loves jealousy, loves I'm guilty." Lead singer Tim Hansen sings his heart out with a throaty, bluesy voice that stays in tune through all the highs and lows.
The freedom rock riffing part of the record arrives with "Caroline." The guitars rock like an old Allman Brothers song as Hansen's voice bears resemblance to Cream's Jack Bruce, but also brings to mind classic rock titans like Deep Purple and Steppenwolf. Eddie Finger's quirky keyboard gives it a feel of a harder rocking version of The Band. Hansen and guitarist Danny Carbona do some cool bluesy shredding on this without overdoing it. The sing along hit of the record, "Young Girls" will make you raise a beer and join in on this anthem of skipping school, fake IDs, and getting in trouble. The keyboards in the song make it sound like an amped-up Cars tune. Sure it's a little retro and a little silly, but you'll fall for the refrain of, "…on a midnight joyride, snuck out on a school night."
The finale, "Sad and Lonely You" is equally as memorable. The storytelling song of heartbreak is catchy like a classic Foo Fighters song, without the happy ending. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this record is flawless. "…But Phil," you might ask, "Isn't it easier to make a flawless record when you only have four songs? I mean you could just record a dozen songs and cut out the eight most average ones." That's true, but a flawless record is a flawless record. It's a rare occasion that one crosses my desk. Do I expect the Black's next four songs to be similarly flawless? Well, yeah, I was kind of hoping that they would be.

Even if you've seen singer Tim Hansen display his particular brand of lunatic charm in Old Man Hansen or Uncle before that; and seen Pete DeGraaf jamming heavy rhythms in Cast Iron Hike, Villain, or 9Volt Superhero; or caught Ed Paquette at the keys playing heady, New Wave-y pop with Cary the Zero; or enjoyed the down-and-dirty antics of Brainless Wonders and The Pathetics, which respectively held guitarist Danny Carbona and drummer Rich Scales, none of it prepared you for what these guys do in their new band, The Black. The Black is, in DeGraaf's words, "Just rock 'n' roll from the hip." And what that exactly means is that The Black's music sounds both passionate and nonchalant. How else to explain a song like "The Best of Luck"? The tune is a rollicking bit of vintage FM fare reminiscent of Joe Walsh at his booziest. You just don't hear much stuff like that around these parts, and The Black is doing it with an earnest, albeit loose, conviction.
| ..>..> --> --> --> if ((!document.images && navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Mozilla/2.") >= 0) || navigator.userAgent.indexOf("WebTV")>= 0) { document.write(''); document.write('..'); }//-->..> | "The Best of Luck" is one of the songs The Black posted on its MySpace page ( www.myspace.com/realblack), and other missives from the year-old band are gathered on the four-song CD "Dead Love Songs," which the band releases Friday at The Lucky Dog Music Hall, 89 Green St., Worcester. Cool vintage bands flit like shadows across The Black's music. "Caroline," for example, sounds like lost Aerosmith funk; "Sad and Lonely You" conjures Axl Rose fronting the Faces. The songs are catchy, but dirtier than underground pop and explosive without being punishing. DeGraaf said that big, boisterous rock is simply what came out of the band-room jams that gave birth to The Black. "Rock 'n' roll is supposed to be fun. It doesn't have to be mind-blowing all the time," DeGraaf said. "Green Eyed Girl," which opens "Dead Love Songs," attests to that statement, with The Black running a reckless route of bad attitude. "Young Girls," a song Hansen co-wrote with Average White Boys' Al Bombs, is another bit of buoyant sneer. DeGraaf gave a lot of credit to Hansen's songwriting for The Black's basic sturdiness. Hansen and Carbona worked out a lot of tunes as an acoustic duo that would make impromptu appearances at The Lucky Dog when Carbona ran a Tuesday night showcase there. DeGraaf, who engineers sound at The Lucky Dog several nights each week, liked what he saw on stage between Carbona and Hansen, digging the contrast to all the uber-heavy sounds he usually witnesses. He soon wandered onto the stage from the sound board. The band built on the songs, adding DeGraaf's bass, Scales' Stones-y drumming and Paquette's distinctive and rhythmic keyboard playing. DeGraaf said The Black is simply a fun hang. "There are some guys you just enjoy jamming with and you want to jam with, just like there are guys you want to have a beer with and guys you don't want to have a beer with," DeGraaf said. DeGraaf also runs M-80 Recording Studio in Worcester and handled production duty on "Dead Love Songs." DeGraaf's studio work led to another band job as the bassist stepped in to join Clear the Way as he was recording the group. Clear the Way is among the opening acts joining The Black on Friday. Paquette's other band, Carry the Zero, is also playing that night, as is Cocked N' Loaded from Brighton. In The Black, the music is attacked from many different directions at once, DeGraaf said. "It's just the right people in the right alignment," he said. Scott McLennan can be reached at tgmusic1@yahoo.com

(from wormtown.org) Tuesday, January 24 2006 @ 11:25 AM EST Views: 22 Without Doc Siddall's "Worcester Rocks" on WORC and much of any other dependable local music programming on the local airwaves for reference, I've spent most of the past month on MySpace searching to find out if we're missing out on any exciting new music. Unfortunately, while there might be well over 600 bands calling Central Mass home there, there's surprisingly little that hits you right in the heart. Unless you happen to fall upon THE BLACK, whose recordings sound unlike almost any that have ever been unleashed by a local act - comparable to how even today Guns 'N' Roses stands miles above the pack almost two decades later. It's real rock star music - the kind of stuff bands put out prior the onset of the punk rock class of '77 when fighting for diminishing space on the radio airwaves, you had to throw your favorite music into a specific box in trying to bring it to the attention of a wider audience. The Black are led by Tim "Old Man" Hansen, whose initial recordings of hard dark slamming rock that invited you down into his most intense feelings two years ago got him labeled as someone to watch and hear. That is, if you could find out when he would be performing backed by a collection of Worcester all-stars or caught him at one of the Lucky Dog's theme nights. Perhaps the fact that someone whose music resembled that which you'd expect from an axe murderer was turning up to sing the classics should have been a clue of where his true musical vision laid. Well, hop onto http://www.myspace.com/realblack and you'll find out the sky's the limit for Hansen and The Black - if that's where these guys are aiming to land their arena sized music. Hansen's joined by guitarist Danny Carbona (AKA Dan the Boy), best known for his role with the heavenly punk band the Brainless Wonders and as the current host of the Tuesday night slot at the Lucky Dog Music Hall (when Tim and Dan have been known to work on some of the Black's music), ex-Cast Iron Hike and Villain bassist Pete Black (Cast Iron Hike and Villain), Ed Paquette on keyboards (Carry the Zero), and the omnipresent Richie Scales on drums. The roads of Worcester's rock 'n' roll history are riddled with acts that should have found a wider audience outside the I-290 area and one hopes these recordings don't reach that same fate. On "The Best of Luck" features vocals like Alice Cooper and sounds like the Faces at times while "Green Eyed Girl" wouldn't have been out of place on Cheap Trick's "Heaven Tonight." Southern-style guitars kick off "Caroline" and I swear I hear a flute in there complementing Dan's keyboards. There's a lot of layers to the Black's music and you could have a great time simply trying to spot the group's musical influences in each song. Having said that, however, to their credit, everything sounds truly genuine and direct from the heart. This is a group giving it everything they've got. The song that really blows me away is "Sad and Lonely You" which recalls the magic period of music between the Summer of Love and the onset of the laid-back California sound when bands were at their creative peak and the years of partying had yet to steal their best abilities away. You've got keyboards adding to its classic sound (not quite Blind Faith but that should give you an idea of what I'm talking about here) underneath Hansen singing how "I was a fool for giving my whole world up for you and I was a fool for thinking your love was something true..." Time will tell whether this group of musicians who've all been in bands which at one time or another have found themselves amongst the area's most popular will stay together to pursue a common united goal of widespread success. For now, you owe it to yourself to check out the music on their web page and if you fall in love with it like I have, make it a point to catch them live ASAP. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
