We finally received the long-awaited advance bound copy of Book 1 and we are thrilled with how it looks.

We made a virtual video tour so you can get a sense of how the book will look! Click the link above to preview it. Just a reminder, there are only two weeks left until the July 1st deadline to reserve your copy. We've had an overwhelming response (especially since each book features a unique piece of artwork from featured artist Kyle Thomas) and supplies are very limited. So, to ensure you receive this special inaugural copy, please subscribe as soon as possible.

Book 1: Supernaturalism Theme

Beautiful/Decay explores a group of artists who conjure notions of the uncanny with their hauntingly off-putting works. Whether introducing distortion, violence, the grotesque or the ghostly, each artist alters traditional (super)naturalism to create visions that teeter on the boundaries of the comedic and the downright diabolical. Hinting to an level of existence beyond the scientifically visible universe, the artists in “Book 1: Supernaturalism” examine the potential for alternate, darker realities.

Book 1: Special Features
Hand-Drawn Cover In celebration of Book 1, featured artist Kyle Thomas will be personally hand-drawing each cover with a one-of-a-kind artwork. No two books will be the same! Within the purple skeleton-crystal magic mirror, Kyle Thomas' playful black ink drawings will take new form.
French flaps & Gatefold Book 1's front and back lining gatefold of the book opens out to a stunning three part diagram, loosely based on alchemical & Masonic symbology.
Special Inserts Custom limited edition inserts throughout the book, including a collaborative sticker with Mat Brown and artist postcard inserts.
Hand Numbered Editions Each copy of Book 1's exclusive 1,500 print run will be lovingly hand numbered. The back cover features a cosmic skull and the book's unique number written below.
164 Pages of Pure Content- No Ads! All traditional advertising has been eliminated, meaning 164 pages of pure, unadulterated content. Book 1 features some of the most in-depth interviews and image-rich spreads on emerging and establishing artists available today.

Artist Profiles
Laura Brothers’ digital works use the relatively unexplored terrain of the internet to create her works. She ironically chooses the dated format of LiveJournal to display her potfolio. GIFs, once the cheap stuff of early 90’s websites, have been reinterpreted into ever-doomed souls lost in the endless throes of their sad-sack actions, and pixel-art becomes almost Bernini like in their bombastic grandeur. Elisabeth Higgins O’Connor create Frankenstein-like stitched and slumping sculptures that look like stuffed animals re-animated from the death. Half playful, half demonic, her voo-doo doll like “No Names” are innocently seductive. Maja Vukoje reinterprets figurative representational painting by fusing it with multiple, unexpected painting techniques and ghostly figures that are on the verge of becoming, or disappearing. Vukoje’s works are haunting in their uncanny states of limbo. Mat Brown presents a hellish vision of the world that strips bare the higher aspirations of enlightened civilization, instead presenting humankind as vulgar, grotesque, lost in the throws of self-indulgence, violence and gluttony. Brown indulges a Lucian Freud-esque aggressive attention to the body. One thing is clear—Brown’s depiction of the humanity within these works is far from idealized. David Jien is an emerging artist who creates obtuse pencil drawings depicting pseudo-typographical architecture that is half crop circle, half Joan Miro. Yvonne Todd creates unsettling photography that straddles the realm of reality and uncanny, hyperreal and replica. Rooted in the identity explorations of Cindy Sherman and overlayed with an idiosyncratic and off-beat sensibility all her own, Todd’s photographs are both seductive and frightening. Frank Magnotta’s hallucinatory graphite drawings hearken back to the classical draftsmanship, mimetic qualities and loaded symbolism of Northern Renaissance masters such as van Eyck and Brueghel. However, Magnotta firmly situates his works the context of our contemporary image-saturated society, coding architectural form and figuration alike with shaded media-message. Magnotta uses advertising imagery as the fundamental “DNA” of his works, manipulating their core structures in myriad ways to cast the mutated visages of his creations.

Help us improve your experience with Beautiful/Decay!

Beautiful/Decay wants to know what you think about us! We have put together a quick, under 30 question reader survey to find out who you are, what you like about B/D, and how we can improve your experience with our magazine, website and e-mail blast! Three entrants will be picked at random to win a mystery prize pack of B/D apparel, books, magazines, stickers and more worth over $50. So please take the time to let us know your thoughts!

To all who have already taken the survey, thanks so much for your input! We’ve already received a ton of response. However, the survey host recently notified us that there may be some technical difficulties- you may receive an “error” message upon completing it. To any of you who have seen this message, rest assured, your answers & email addresses have been submitted.

For those of you who haven’t taken the survey yet, there are still a few days left- your feedback is important to us! Please just ignore the little technological hiccup at the end.

Thanks again and we look forward to hearing your thoughts!

picture-11 Beautiful/Decay presents a month-long series of art-based films to screen at the brand new Space 1520. This selection of films showcases a stunning array of creative concepts and ideas. We kick off with Loic Prigent’s behind-the-scenes documentary, “Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton” delving into Marc Jacobs’ busy creative life, and featuring appearances by Victoria Beckham, Uma Thurman and other fashion-forward Hollywood starlets. The concept of art-stardom, hot commodity and celebrity continues with “Basquiat,” examining the 19 year old street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) that quickly took New York’s high art world by storm in an unprecedented meteoric rise. “Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?” takes a more tongue-in-cheek look at the inner workings of the stuffy art elite through the eyes of a beer-drinking, sailor-mouthed woman who may have accidentally purchased a Pollock from a thrift store. Finally, we present “Rivers and Tides,” an otherworldly documentary that follows renowned sculptor Andy Goldsworthy as he transforms and harnesses the elemental forces of ice, driftwood, rivers, and forests into works of ethereal and transient beauty. This is a one of a kind opportunity to watch these movies outdoors and on the big screen! Popcorn and drinks will also be served.

Sneak peak of a part of the front cover for issue:1

Everyone has been asking us what we’ll do after Issue Z. In our tradition of innovation, Beautiful/Decay will reinvent itself in a brand new, expanded format with Issue 1 in July.

Beginning as a hand-photocopied, black and white ‘zine over ten years ago, Beautiful/Decay has always proudly put artists—and quality content—first. We are re-launching Beautiful/Decay to have all the benefits of traditional magazine subscribership, while taking the form of an expanded, limited edition, more voluminous publication.

In keeping with the spirit of our independent DIY philosophy, we have decided to break the mold of traditional magazines and change the way we do business. In this economy, most publications are either going out of business or watering down their content to appease advertisers. Rather than conform to the publishing industry’s new rules, we’ve decided to create our own business model that allows us to flourish and increase the quality of our content.

One thing we’ve always disliked about the mainstream print industry is that it can be wasteful. Newsstands throw away all unsold magazines, averaging a 40-60% waste rate. In keeping with our commitment to staying green, Beautiful/Decay will instead send issues straight into the hands of subscribers, rather than dumpsters.

Here’s what the new B/D will look like:
• Eliminated ALL traditional advertising

• Made an 50% increase in page count, meaning 164 pages of pure, unfiltered content

• Features now have double the page space, with more full-color images & articles

• Articles now run 16-20 pages, providing some of the most in-depth coverage of emerging artists available today

• Released in limited edition format of only 1,500-2000 copies, each one hand numbered

• Each issue comes with a limited edition collaborative artist projectranging from inserts, stickers, posters, to original artwork

• Presented in new format & size, including French flaps and multiple printing processes within

• Released 3 times a year (once every 4 months)
To celebrate our new expanded format, Issue 1 will feature a hand-drawn, original artwork by previously B/D featured artist Kyle Thomas. These will sell out, as we already have 1000 subscribers on our list so be sure to subscribe in order to reserve your copy.
I hope that you’re all as excited about this as we are at Beautiful/Decay. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new direction.

Thanks for the support,

Amir H. Fallah
