We are now on iTunes. Which puts us one step ahead of Radiohead. Finally.

Also, if you already have the EP you can to the iTunes music store and write a review! The more awesome reviews we have the more we'll feel better about ourselves!

This is the Arizona Republic article that we mentioned in our last blog:

AZ Republic 10-02-06

Saturday, September 23, 2006

The other day we had our first official photo shoot.  Very exciting.  We were doing it for the Arizona Republic for a story this guy wrote about how we're famous now because of YouTube (look for it on October 2nd, or 3rd or something).  It turned out to be a two or three hour ordeal fraught with strange, embarrassing and sometimes painful positions and one unexpected visitor.

For the first part of the shoot the photographer decided to take us to the "greenbelt" which is this strip of park that runs along Scottsdale Road that has little lakes and paths and junk for a couple miles.  These were the directions that he gave us for our first pose:

"OK.  So Mat, you stand here and look off in the horizon at the sun.  Then Daniel and Jessie, if you guys could stand on either side of him . . . there you go.  Now tilt back your heads on his shoulders . . . That's it.  Look over here . . . Now you two say 'Ya ha!' . . . Perfect."

Now, before I go any further I should say that our photographer for the evening was named Scott and he seemed like a real nice guy.  Good intentions and everything.  And he may be a really good photographer.  In fact the next few things that we tried actually seemed pretty normal.  And then he gave us some more directions:

"OK, let's see.  How about Mat, you walk down this path here.  And then Jessie, you walk in front of him and Daniel, you walk behind him.  Mat, you should have your hands in your pockets and look cool . . . and you two . . . how about we have you jump up in the air at the same time and then give me a big 'Ya ha!'"

Daniel was real excited about this one.  I was not.  I thought Jess was going to die (it should be noted that she was a real good sport through the whole thing.)  After some pep talks ("Come on guys, we can do this . . .") and a lot of head shaking we went for it.  We would walk in a line about six or seven (ha) steps and then Scott would say "GO!" and Jess and Daniel would jump up in the air and say "Ya ha!" and I would try to look cool.  Needless to say, we required a few attempts to get the timing right.  About the third try after we started walking I hear a voice behind us:

"Hey Daniel!"

"Dad?"

"GO!"

So at the exact time that he should have, Scott took the picture, while Daniel jumped in the air and Daniel's dad Dave happened to be taking a bike ride through the greenbelt on the path that we were using to take a photo for the biggest newspaper in the state.  He didn't even stop.  Not to say hi, not to keep out of the shot, not to ask what in the world we were doing there.  He just rode right by and yelled, "Dad's gonna be in the shot! Take it riiiiiiiight NOW!!"  And he did.  Scott took the shot right as Dave passed by on his bike.  Unbelievable.

But you know, it really didn't surprise us all that much.  I guess you have to know Dave.  He's pretty serious about his exercise.

Our "Hey Ya" cover has been appearing on several radio shows accross the country.  We've gotten emails from Irvine, Reno, Seattle and Boston.  We were also featured on Relevant Magazine's podcast this weekend. This is especially cool, because we've known about Relevant for a long time and they had some really nice things to say.  You can download the podcast here:

For those of you who dont know, our friend Brian posted a video of me playing a cover of Outkasts Hey Ya on YouTube.com.  You can see it here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=1ioKEDgnfs8.  Well that video has been up for over a month and last week about 2,400 people had visited that page.  Right now there have been 54,760 views and its going up every day.  The video has been on Fark.com as well as I-am-bored.com as well as some site in Sweden that apparently is pretty popular.  Weve sold about 40 or so CDs online (which is about 40 something more than we sold ever) and lots of people have been emailing us and saying nice things.

First of all, thanks to everyone that has looked us up enough to read this or left some kind of nice comment (actually, not-so-nice comments are fun to read too, but I'm assuming that those people aren't reading this).  Special thanks to those of you who bought our CD or a T-Shirt, I hope you all have someone that to give you high fives when you need them, because you deserve it.

So, apparently some guys that run a radio show down on KFMA 92.1 & 101.3 in Tucson got a hold of the video and started playing it on the show.  They called me today and asked me to do an interview tomorrow.  I said yes.  Pretty crazy.  They do have a live stream from the internet that you can go to here: http://www.kfma.com/index_after.php.  Tune in tomorrow at about 7:20am (Arizona time) to hear the interview and well let you know if we can get a recording of it somehow.

Crazy things are happening.  Don't know what it will lead to, but it is a lot of fun to read people on the internet saying things about you like this:

"Does anyone else want to start ripping their ears off at the mere mention of this song? Maybe that's just me." - Timicus

"Cool cover.  The even mo' coooler thing is now I know what the bastard lovechild of Will Ferrell and a grizzly bear looks like"

"nice beard" - MagicPaul

"Stupid." - Enohead

OK.  I have to blog a little bit about the other day and the most bizarre and awkward gig I've played to date.  It all started with good intentions from good peoples . . .

Namely my friend from work named Genine (who just shaved her head into a mohawk, so she's actually cooler than she was last week when this all went down).  Genine and her boyfriend Colin have a home studio that they're just getting restablishized and her brother is a DJ that's just starting to "spin out" a little more (I've picked up a little lingo).  So, somehow they get hooked up with the VP of LA Fitness.  He invites them to come down to some kinda event their having at one of the gyms, spin a little, pass out some flyerage and get some free publicity.  Genine, being awesome, invites us to come along and share some of the pub (this is definitely not lingo, and in fact it's totally lame that I used that abb., but what are you going to do about it?) and me, being pretty naive and always excited to play anywhere, says "Alright, sounds so good."

Now, I don't know exactly what I was expecting.  But this is what it pretty much was like: imagine walking into an LA Fitness on a normal Monday night.  The gym is about a third full of people getting off work and getting a good solid hour of weight lifting in before they walk outside into the boiling August Arizona air.  But this is no ordinary night for Chick-Fil-A is passing out free samples of fried chicken at the door and in the corner is a pretty heavy guy with a real big beard singing the crap out of a Bjork cover.

Seriously, I was playing right next to girl on a treadmill.  All things considered, I was received pretty well by everyone that wasn't wearing headphones or trying not to make eye contact with me.  Damien and Genine got a gig from a guy that hired them to do a wedding and this one guy really liked me a lot.  Good times.

The truth is that despite it being a really awkward and ridiculous situation . . . I had a fun time playing.  I'm glad that I can have fun playing pretty much anywhere.  However, I don't think that it makes me the right person to be in charge of getting us gigs.  At this point, we need to start getting good shows rather than as many shows as we can.  I really honestly think that we could be playing way better shows than we are right now.  I just have no idea how to get them.  Even worse, I have no idea how to turn down the shows that are a waste of time.  No . . . not a waste of time, but a waste of the large amount of energy it takes to haul equipment to a show, get "emotionally engaged" in playing for however long, and then packing everything up, driving home and unloading it all again.  I really love playing, but there's got to be places out there that will move us along toward finding a larger audience.

That being said, I'm playing another LA Fitness on August 18th.  So, if any of you want to come experience one of the most awesomely awkward performances around, let me know.  Maybe you could run the merch table.

Last night I played at Micah Beverly's studio open mic at Xtreme Bean and we had a real fun time "jamming out" (that's what we musicians call it when we stop caring about playing the "right notes").  Our friend The Brian got ahold of the video to one song and posted it on google video.

Check it out chicos!

Since there's nothing to really talk about, I thought that I would list a bunch of sites that I've been to lately that everyone should check out.

- This is an article about the secret life of Tom Hanks.

Tom Hanks Article

- This has to be the funniest video I've seen in a long time.
Gay Mountain Climber?

- "The tables have turned!" Here's a Mario spin off game that is pretty cool.
Bullet Bill

- I don't know what this is.  But I think I really like it.
Bendito Machine

- For some reason, I really like this game and I played it for hours the other day.  It's on the Gorillaz website, and they actually have some cool games there.  Kinda weird.
Attache

- Andy Costello showed me this site a couple weeks ago.  It's like Strong Bad Emails (sbemail) only with a ninja.
Ask a Ninja

- This is an absolutely amazing clip from a documentary called Mystic Ball.  The movie is about a sport called Chinlone that's played in Southeast Asia.
