A Woman's Touch is celebrating the return of Spring with two workshops that celebrate you.

(Image from www.margaritagarcia.com)
Our Middle Eastern Bellydance class for women promises some of that invigorating Spring self-renewal with some hot moves to boot! Bellydance, known as Raks Sharki in Arabic, is one of the world’s oldest dance forms celebrating the female body. Get in touch with your feminine inner strength while learning basic muscle isolation techniques. Develop greater self-confidence, increased body awareness and better posture. Through Bellydance you will discover a beautiful and graceful way to move with music while increasing your sense of rhythm. This class demands some physical exertion, so be prepared to get a good workout! No belly exposure or special costumes are required -- just wear comfortable clothing. Cost is $25 per person.

The Erotic Toybox (formerly Sex Toys 101):
Sunday, March 22nd from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Looking for something a little more low key? The Erotic Toybox is a free workshop that will give you the opportunity to learn more about your anatomy, arousal, and the ways you can use sex toys to enhance your sexual health and pleasure. You’ll be introduced to a wide variety of items that have been designed to enhance your sexual experiences, and learn the answers to all the how and why questions about them. Did you know that the Valentine's Day tradition of exchanging love notes with your beloved began in the Middle Ages?  The tradition which began as a ritual of courtly love has turned into a full-blown holiday for us, and can be a great excuse to show someone that you care.  If you are un-partnered, however, you may feel that you have little to celebrate; that doesn't have to be the case!  Partnered or not, Valentine's Day is a perfect opportunity to express affection for someone who's always there...yourself!  When was the last time you told yourself "I love you" or did something special for yourself?  Has it been a while?  Why not do so this Valentine's Day, and put as much care and thought into it as you would for a partner.  Even if you will celebrate with a partner, you can still use it as a day to love yourself, too!

Here are some ideas for saying "I love you" to yourself:
--Make a Valentine.  Write down some things that you genuinely love about yourself.  Many of us think so much about the things we could do better, so take the time to express appreciation for yourself.  Can't find the words?  Put some Romantic Poetry Magnets on your fridge and see how the words inspire you.
--Pamper yourself.  Take a hot bath; make it bubbly with Sex Bubbles, or fizzy with Bubbling Bath Salts; light scented soy candles and play soothing music.  Give your skin a treat with some lovingly applied lotion.
--Get a massage.  You could schedule a professional massage.  But you could also exchange shoulder rubs with a friend, or massage your own hands and feet with some deliciously scented massage oil (it's amazing how good a simple hand massage can feel!).
--Devote some time to self-pleasuring.  Set aside as much time as you..'d like, and allow yourself to enjoy giving yourself pleasure.  If you would like advice, encouragement, or toys for a self-pleasuring session, consider reading Sex for One by Betty Dodson, or talk to an AWT staff member about selecting the right toy for you.
--Do something that you really want to do, but don't usually make the time for.  This could include some of the ideas listed above, or something like eating a special meal (possibly delivered to your home?), putting a fragrant bouquet of flowers on your table, curling up with a hot beverage and a book you've been meaning to read, or going for a nice long walk.  Put some thought into what would make you feel really good, and make it happen!

Here at A Woman's Touch, we are very concerned about health and safety, and so we do not carry items that may be hazardous to our customers. Here's a list of items you won't find at our store, and why:

Ball Gags

Ball gags can cause damage to the jaw if they are too large or are worn for too long. Most are made of low quality materials and aren't built for looks or comfort. We do, however, offer a safer alternative, the Bit Gag. It does the same thing as a ball gag but without stressing the jaw or making the wearer drool.

Desensitizing creams or lubricants

These products are designed to numb the user, usually either as a means of delaying ejaculation or to ease the pain of anal sex. If you're using a numbing cream on a penis, guess what else gets numb? Anything else the penis touches. And how are you supposed to experience pleasure when your skin, mouth, genitals, etc are numb? Instead why don't you read up a little bit about Eager Ejaculation and work for a solution that still allows for sensations. Desensitizing lubricants, such as Anal-Eaze, promise to "enhance comfort during penetration." The problem here is that anal penetration should not hurt at all! Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong, and if you block those sensations with benzocaine or other anesthetics, you could find yourself seriously injured. We recommend a nice cushiony lubricant (such as Maximus), along with plenty of communication and relaxation to make anal play a positive experience. A little information goes a long way as well, so you may want to check out our article on getting started with anal play.

Edible Undies

The idea of wearing something with the consistency of a Fruit Roll-Up doesn't really appeal to us. Think sticky and gooey, and then imagine that stuck in your pubic hair (if you have it)! Not to mention that putting anything edible near or inside your vagina increases your chances of getting a yeast infection, because those little yeasties love to have a feast. No thank you!

Finger cots

The problem with finger cots is that they only cover your fingers. So what if you have a cut or sore on the palm of your hand? You could either avoid touching your partner until it heals, or cover your entire hand with a glove! Latex and nitrile gloves protect the wearer and the person they are touching from catching an infection via cuts or wounds. And, the combination of lube and latex (or nitrile, for those who are latex-sensitive) is delightfully slippery, leading to some interesting sensations. Plus finger cots tend to roll right off your finger at the most inopportune time. "Sorry honey, but my finger cot came off in your butt.."

Handcuffs

Metal handcuffs can cause damage to tendons or nerves in the wrist if the person wearing them struggles. Safer options such as Soft Satin Wrist Restraints and a wide variety of leather and synthetic restraints can be found in our Sensation Play section.

Herbal Supplements

These products are not subject to FDA approval. Most do not work the way they are advertised, and some may actually be dangerous. In fact, the FDA recently released a warning advising men not to buy supplements for erectile dysfunction, because they can interact with other medications and cause death.

Jelly toys

Jelly rubber toys contain harmful chemicals called phthalates, which leak out of the toys and can easily enter your body through mucous membranes like the genitals or mouth. Phthalates have been linked to lots of serious health problems. This article contains more information about jelly toys and why we do not carry them.

Lambskin condoms

Lambskin condoms are porous. The holes in the condoms are large enough to allow bacteria, viruses, and other microbes through, but small enough to block sperm. This makes them an effective condom when contraception is your only goal. Latex and polyurethane condoms, on the other hand, are effective at preventing both the spread of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy.

Libido- or Orgasm-enhancing creams or gels

These products contain skin irritants such as menthol or botanical oils. They often include L-Arginine, an amino acid that has been shown to increase blood flow to the genitals when ingested at levels of 1000-2000 mg. per day, but not when put on the skin. They do make the user more aware of her genitals because of the irritation that they cause, but do not cause instant or easy orgasms. In fact, if you read the small print, the instructions state that you should rub the gel or lotion into the clitoris for 5 to 10 minutes. Well, in that case, the same results can be achieved by using any sexual lubricant and massaging the vulva for 5-10 minutes prior to sexual activity. Then you get all the arousal and stimulation that the "arousal" gel or lotion provides without the irritation.

Metal Cock Rings

A metal cock ring can be dangerous. If the penis swells too much once the ring is on, it will be nearly impossible to remove. And by leaving the ring on, blood flow is restricted in the penis, which could lead to permanent damage. We prefer to offer rings made of leather, rubber, or silicone which either have snaps or Velcro for quick release or can be cut with a scissors if necessary. A metal cock ring stuck on an erect penis would need to be removed in an emergency room. The words "Dr., please use the saw" should never be used in the same sentence as "penis" as far as we are concerned.

Spermicides or condoms with spermicide

Almost all spermicides contain nonoxynol-9, which is a detergent that has proven very irritating to sensitive genital tissue. Spermicides have not been shown to have much, if any, contraceptive effect, and can actually increase the user's chances of contracting an STI (if the user is exposed to one). For more information on this, you can read this article.

Tongue vibrators

They might sound like a good idea, but those little vibrating capsules you can strap to your tongue don't really live up to their reputation. They can numb the tongue and chip teeth. And if it was accidentally swallowed, you'd have a medical emergency on your hands. We think that oral sex should be the soft and sensual experience that a tongue provides. If you want something with more zing, there are many lovely vibrators to tickle your nerve endings without chipping your tooth.

Toy cleaner

First of all, most toy cleaners contain nonoxynol-9, a detergent that has proven irritating to sensitive genital tissue (see previous entry on spermicides for more information on nonoxynol-9), and we don't want to carry that chemical in our store. Secondly, you don't need a special toy cleaner! Soapy warm water will do a great job of cleaning hard plastic, glass, acrylic, vinyl, elastomer, and non-shared silicone toys. Silicone toys that are shared or used both anally and vaginally can be sterilized by boiling or bleaching. All of our products come with a care & cleaning guide, so you won't be left wondering how to clean your new purchase.

Warming lubricants

These lubricants contain very high levels of glycerin (a sugar-related substance which may cause yeast infections) or sugars like acacia honey or irritants like capsacin (the chemical that makes hot peppers hot). Any of these can cause irritation and possibly infections, even in women who aren't usually prone to yeast infections. For more information on warming lubricants and alternatives, please see this article.

Have fun and play safely!

Here are a few new items that we are excited about, and think that you might be, too:

The Smart Girl's Guide to Porn

by Violet Blue

The secret is out: Women watch porn! Violet Blue guides you through the world of pornography and tells you how to find porn that appeals to you. Along the way, she addresses some of the common concerns many women have about viewing pornography (e.g. does porn degrade women? where are the condoms?). You'll learn how to avoid movies that feature things you don't like, and what to do if you do encounter unpleasant scenes in an otherwise great film (hint: you'll need your remote control). And of course, Violet suggests ways to introduce porn into your relationship. This book ends with a thorough resource guide, including reputable websites that sell or rent adult films, forums to get other viewers' opinions on certain films, stars, and directors, and a list of suggestions for the online porn connoisseur.

Hearts Cracked Open:
Tantra for Women Who Love Women

Women who love women may feel uncomfortable with books, films, and workshops that focus on male and female roles in Tantric sexuality. This is the first film to look at Tantric sexual experiences between women. The film is part documentary, featuring interviews with the leaders and participants of women-only workshops about Tantra, and part erotic movie, as techniques are demonstrated by the participants. Learn how to increase intimacy in your day-to-day relationship, extended your orgasms, and experience sexual healing through Tantric techniques. Featuring Annie Sprinkle, Pamela Madison, Marcia Singer, and Evalena Rose.

Pure Joy Playthings

These stainless steel baubles make excellent heavy plugs for anal or vaginal use. The handle means you can keep a good hold on the end, and the weight means you'll enjoy strong sensations. These also work well for exercising your pelvic floor by inserting one into the vagina or anus and trying to hold it in while gently pulling out against your muscles.
