The last stop of a US tour last year found me in Chicago during a particularly wet winter's day. I took a train and then a bus to a little town just across the bridge from Davenport, Iowa, called Rock Island. There's a studio there that records musicians and posts their sessions on-line. a new musician everyday. It's called Daytrotter. check my session out: http://www.daytrotter.com/dt/culture-reject-all-it-feels-true-over-there-concert/20030462-3737759.html thanks. Michael

CULTURE REJECT SELECTED PRESS EYE MAGAZINE (4 stars) 'Culture Reject's strength comes from it's ability to subvert any obvious conventions.' HEROHILL 'The quirks and transitions he adds to songs are a sneak peak into an overactive mind...O'Connell truly samples from the best elements of World Music but still adds the crunch that indie rock fans need.' CHARTATTACK 'Were CDs able to make babies, Culture Reject would undoubtedly be the lovechild sprung from the joining of Miracle Fortress' FIVE ROSES and Chad VanGaalen's SKELLICONNECTION...Every song is lush and meticulously arranged.' EXCLAIM 'Built for summer nights at the cottage, Culture Reject's debut is a majestic achievement.' ECHO WEEKLY 'greatness in the veins of Sebadoh in their earliest days and Plastic Ono Band-era John Lennon. There's a certain sweetness and romance in this startling pretty, tiny music.' EDMONTON JOURNAL 'an extremely listenable collection of bedroom pop that contains looping fugues of adept fingerpicking and snakey guitar leads.' I HEART MUSIC 'an album that could soundtrack every aspect of your summer. One of the most surprisingly great albums of the year-to-date that doesn't sound like anyone else.' LAST.FM (BLOGGER'S TOP TEN OF 2008 so far) “a cinematic familiarity that makes it seem like a lost Wes Anderson soundtrack. This Canadian made me want to listen, and I want more.” PRESS INQUIRIES: info@whitewhale.ca / 604.719.8481

HERE ARE SOME, NOT ALL, SONG LYRICS FROM THE CURRENT RECORD.

OVERFLOW

Our tongues are broken
But this does not mean that we cannot breathe together
Our tongues are broken
My love, these giants refuse surrender.

Lust and consumption
Just like you wanna eat me until I'm gone.
But your fingers pierce my flesh where you hold on.
Woman, I know you know this is overflow.
Woman,
I Iong for eternity with you in it x 3

I DJ4U through America,
I fingertip you while you drive.
I hope your car does not break down
While I'm driving it.
That would crush your little crush
Maybe dry your lush forest.

Woman, I know you know this is overflow.
Woman,

The summer's coming on
No, fruits won't betray you
The winter's closing out
And the moon is in a loop.

INSIDE THE CINEMA

Here I've got the perfect perch
Beside you I search inside your purse
I fund my ideas
You watch and I'll put on some airs
I'll watch to make sure that you stare
Down low inside the cinema

Come culture reject expect respect
You protect what is good
Yeah, we know what is good.
Yeah, we know what is good.

I won't judge but what's the effect
When we move away from it?
I'll purge what's inside my chest
Hold me if I can't handle it.
I'll watch while you put on some airs
I love that Bill Murray man
Down low inside the cinema.

Come culture reject expect respect
To protect what is good
Yeah, we know what is good.

Who fucking loves New York?
Who is the biggest fan?
Who is a fiery cheerleader caught
in some un-New York foreign land?

I wanna get home I wanna get stoned
Make myself food make myself good
Make myself good make myself good

I wanna get home I wanna get stoned
Make myself food make myself good
Make myself good make myself good
Make myself

Come culture reject expect respect
You protect what is good
Yeah, we know what is good
Come, come
Come culture reject, cool respect
Do not pretend to love
You will just get depressed.

FIREFLIES ARE FADING

Hold it close
It's unbelievable
All these fireflies are already fading now
We marry or bury it
Everything falls in time
That's why we go all the way
All the way
All the way

Winter comes
No more leaves that fall.
Leaving us something to prepare.
Without a car all that we are we are full
just like the innocence that remains

We do it all again
We fight and not listen
I tie you up, you tie me up
I tie you up again.
This light is unbelievable
You know it's summertime.

MUSEUMS

I had stayed up all night
I watched the fire until it was light.
You policed, you killed all fun,
You tried to control all outcome.

I lay there like a baby sleeps
Not wanting more because it's cheap.
When you wrecked it with your speech.

I'm stepping out
I'm stepping from
This old museum.

Busy is as busy does.
Busy avoiding what was.
Obsess right, obsess wrong.
Maybe, baby, you obsess too long.
The people in the streets tonight
The bugs that swarm the midnight light.
The scene that keeps me out of sight.

I'm stepping out
I'm stepping from
This old museum

BEACH

If there's ever been a time
Where everything is right
Like a perfect wine,
It doesn't matter who is standing in the way
What you say, you do,
Because you love the way,
Don't ask me to explain.
Cause I may not want to say
Who knows if I'd get it right?
I like the way it is tonight.

A sentiment that oft prevails
I admire but I'm flawed and I'm struck I am high
And I may not come down

Take off our clothes
We'll search the beach, right now baby.

We better make our move while they're still asleep
While they're still on hold
So much to believe we gotta think it through
We gotta love the eve like we said we'd do.
I'm trying to explain.
I know I never want to say,
Who cares if I get it right?
I like the way it is tonight.

A sentiment that never fails I avoid when I'm high
When I'm high
When I'm high
We are lost in what we found

Take off our clothes
we'll search the beach, right now baby.

OH REMAIN

Morning time we rest it best
After nights that fall upon
The hunt for clarity, my appetite
The search for the revealing song.

I’ll dub the noise all around
I’ll make a revolt out of it.
But I could never sell it.
I’m not a dead poet,
Not dead enough yet…

She came clear out of her dark,
Wearing wigs and railman’s clothes.
Wearing out some welcomes.
Watching words and how they grow.

And in the middle of her time,
If she misses what’s to be seen,
She’s got her eyes on something other.
Maybe something she can believe
Somethings she can’t believe.

Au revoir au revoir au revoir
Oh remain oh remain oh remain

We’ll dub the noise all around
We’ll outthink the thinking heads
We’ll find a place we can inhabit
We’ll put ourselves right back to bed,
Ourselves right back to bed…

Au revoir au revoir au revoir
Oh remain oh remain oh remain

BLUEPRINT

Such a force in retelling it, involving me some
Looked at my hood from on my roof.
All in my mind, all in my mind
The glory fizzed out.
Courage to alter stories.

We come from the instant neighborhood
we saw the blueprint
We come from the instant neighborhood
we saw the blueprint

Family boys, they gather all around the coals.
Even though I knew my mouth was always open
I remedied all their burns.
It's alright

We come from the instant neighborhood
we saw the blueprint
We come from the instant neighborhood
we saw the blueprint

I ran scared I ran my portrait outside
to face the the wall and all and all and all
Glorify it, go remake it.
Is Steven Truscott home?

Is he alright?

We've made it so close
We've made it so far
We're making prose the element of the time
The morning will prevail
The morning will prevail

We come from the instant neighborhood
we saw the blueprint
We come from the instant neighborhood
we saw the blueprint
I want you to give me a tattoo
so I won't be invisible.

I play some new songs at this show. I have been messing with my loop pedal + love the possibilities of presentation. my aim is true.
shelton deverell will open.  He plays soulful RnB ballads, all original, but it's like he found all this music from the 60's that no one recorded. he will make your little cup brim with tittles.
hope you can slip by.
