Time for some nice and grimey rock 'n roll. It's nice to take a break from the bass beats and dirty synths to detox myself with Fifty on Their Heels. These three guys from San Diego have recently released a six-song EP on their label, Cat Dirt Recordings. I wish every album came with your own personal live show b/c these guys get C-RAZY! Junior Metro's 'Johnny Rotten-esque' vocals layered over his 'Sid Vicious' stage antics practically grab you by your stonewashed denim jacket and force you to dance with him. If you close your eyes, you can feel that same energy while listening to their album. You can catch whiffs of Gang of Four and hints of The Slits or The Buzzcocks peppered throughout. Its a breath of pungent punk when everyone is breathing electro like its oxygen.
If you live in SoCal, try to catch one of their shows. They'll bring the CBGB to you…

There's only one thing left to do/ and that is dance, the night away, croons lead singer Junior Metro in a classic punk rock snarl on Fifty on Their Heels' debut EP, as a crisp disco beat keeps time. And that's probably exactly what you'll do. Metro, along with bassist Nicky Shingles and drummer Justin, evoke the primal urge to jump around and get sweaty on the dance floor.
With only six songs in its entire recorded catalogue, Fifty on Their Heels has already won a San Diego Music Award for Best Punk Album in 2006 along with starting its own record label, Cat Dirt. Brimming with punk attitude and edgy grooves, these San Diegans have many more dance floors to conquer.

Fifty on Their Heels @ Beauty Bar
Junior Metro is the sh**. Seriously. Singing, playing guitar, dancing, wearing cool shoes, romping through the crowd so far as his amp chord would let him, slipping on said chord, bleeding on the mic, and then rocking s'more. All for a Thursday! Way to give'er, as the Canadians say.
The crowd at the Beauty Bar was decent, and unfortunately loosened up more AFTER the Fifty on Their Heels set as the DJ Paparazzi substitute (I couldn't hear his name over the Joy Division. Sorry, dude, way to step up) worked remixes of new Bloc Party to a drunk-and-getting-drunker crowd of east of Menlo Ave. partiers looking to start the weekend off early. Fifty is a tight band, playing spasmodic and frenetic punk racket that an elderly neighbor would probably bang on the walls to "shut that crap off" but an elderly neighbor's granddaughter would be jumping on her bed and dancing to "Occupation." I'd like to see what Fifty can do in a more crowded venue, because I get the feeling that Junior can really light it up, but last night at the Beauty Bar was nevertheless solid and fun. Lucky for you S.D., the band is playing the Che Cafe (fundraiser, be there) in March, and if ever a venue pandered to band/audience interaction, it's the Che. See: any ¡Society! gig.

FIFTY ON THEIR HEELS "fifty on their heels", ep cd
i saw this band play live at the smell during the special "new wave fuck fest" night where they played with bubonic plague and new collapse. i was very impressed and introduced myself to their contact person while they were still playing. got the album and here we are.
it's always a worry if the recorded versions of those songs you like hearing live will live up to the stage sound. in the case of this album, they did a great job in capturing the live sound. a lot of credit goes to the way the vocals were handled. junior metro's voice doesn't lose much of its power in the studio. it's sharp and you feel the meaning behind every word. a bit of screamers, a bit of minor threat, a bit of fugazi, a bit of the clash, you can hear the influences there, but they really do make their sound their own and it feels good to listen to it. this is an excellent introduction to fifty on their heels and i hope to hear a full length follow-up soon. heck, i want to hear it tomorrow! can you make that happen guys? get this for your next airplane flight. record it to tape so you can hear it during takeoff. cat dirt records; 110 w. c st. ste 2108, san diego, ca. 92101

Fifty On Their Heels - S/T
Record Label: Cat Dirt Records
Review by: Ivan Fernandez
Dance! - The night away! proclaims Fifty On Their Heels vocalist/guitarist Junior Metro. His desperate, Johnny Rotten-esque vocals backed by Nicky Shingles bass lines and Justins drumming will have you doing just that for as long as their self-titled EP lasts.
The EP, released by their own Cat Dirt Records label, is a package of six energetic tunes that sway over to the punk territory of the dance-punk genre. Theres a thicker layer of cynicism rather than irony in their lyrics (Cant imagine living my life / with no time to spend on me) unlike most (all?) indie bands out now.
The record alone sounds like it would come off even better live, like something you could either dance or mosh to. Extra points to these guys for the amazing album packaging. The entire thing is designed like those cheesy classified ads from the 1950s filled with ads for x-ray glasses and privately printed gal magazines. Keep an eye out for these San Diego kids.

MP3: Fifty On Their Heels debut release
The other day in the post I recieved a copy of the debut EP from Fifty On Their Heels, a rather good new punk/indie/rock/newwave band on San Diego's Cat Dirt Records. Theirs is actually the first release on that label, and the band do also hail from that most sunny of places, which has recently achieved instant coolness through being the setting from Veronica Mars. ahem. Anyway the CD has 6 tracks, all of which are pretty cool and I think show a bunch of potential. There's a nice mixture of British punk influence with some more American new wavey touches and a few other disparate elements from other genres showing up every now and then. Well worth a listen. The CD artwork is also really really great, lots of nice 50s pulp adverts for guns and porn with the song titles mixed in. You can check out the bands myspace page here, or check out Cat Dirt's myspace or blog. I think you can also buy the CD directly from CDBaby. Meanwhile you can sample a few of the songs below. Enjoy. By the way if any other labels/bands fancy sending me any CDs/Vinyl/Money, feel free to email me, and if I like stuff enough I expect i'll talk about it here. Fifty on Their Heels Posted by Kim Schwenk Cd:Self-Titled
Bands:
Dance is the new drug
Its too bad Ian Curtis, Johnny Thunders and Darby Crash arent around today to see the latest post-abuse reincarnates, spawning from their joyous days of exploit. Despite a barrel full of mocking criticism, many contemporary post-punk bands arent just rehashing the sound; theyve added a suffix onto the void of the blank generations inability to focus. So while the clang of experimentation was fresh in the 80s, now mediocre efforts just arent cutting it.
Although San Diego may not be a thriving metropolitan of culture-canned consciousness, bands like UV Tigers, the Powerchords, and Fifty on Their Heels certainly have taken heed from their heroes, got inspired, and ran with it. Fifty on Their Heels with some serious and creative skill, struts around a bit of cynical savoir-faire and a tad of fashionista with their latest self-titled EP. Even in their infant stage, the trio achieves a strong level of the brilliance of the Fall, even the intensity of the Screamers and the Voidoids.
Ironically times have changed, and unlike our new wave antecedents, Fifty on Their Heels created their own label and now release their music independently on Cat Dirt Records. Definitely a common thread throughout the albums language, DIY is religion and tracks like Occupation and Money, Glamour, Suicide emulate that nihilistic jab at society, punk proudly worships. When it really comes down to it, the album just body rocks with the speed of invention and movement and for the most part, what we are seeing here is a dance revolution celebrating integrity and devotion. Its the need for jive and kinetic culture! Youll fall for Fifty on Their Heels, you addict.

You know the feeling you get as you sit in an airport waiting for you flight to take off when you have a connecting flight you have to make? You're there an hour early, sitting in the terminal waiting. You notice the airplane hasn't arrived yet. No matter, you've still got plenty of time. As long as you take off no less than an hour late, you'll still be fine for your connection. But it gradually become a battle between optimism and reality, and as the clock starts ticking down, you come to the grim realization ten minutes before your deadline that the plane's not coming, you're going to miss your connection, and your vacation is ruined.
Well that's what this past week has been like watching the Street Scene rumors trickle in. The latest, collected nicely for us at the UT's Liner Notes, indicate that She Wants Revenge, My Chemical Romance, Yellowcard and possibly Tool are added to the lineup. The possibility of pulling off an event to rival Lollapalooza that same August weekend appears to have evaporated almost laughably quickly, and as the clock ticks down towards the Monday lineup annoucement, one can only hope that whoever is piloting the Street Scene plane pulls off some Chuck Yeager style heroics to bring the bird in safely. What is most unsettling about the whole thing is not the lack fo indie buzz bands, or major headliners, but rather that the Street Scene seems completely focused in the absolute nadir of shitty genres: the emo/punk bands.
The problem with these bands, none of which I have ever listened to and could not name a song or album by, is that they forgot something about the very basics of punk. Though the Sex Pistols were angry, and the Ramones could only play three chords, both of these bands were essentially pop music gone horribly awry. If you take away the sneering vocals, some of the distortion and slow it all down a wee bit, you've got a sixties pop song. Maybe take out the abortion and glue sniffing subject matter, but anyways. Bands like The Clash would further expound upon the inherent poppiness in early punk music, creating songs that build, segue, flow, you know, songs that behave like Beatles songs. I remember in 8th grade when Green Day came out with Dookie, and all the magazines talked about was the "return of punk." I was confused then, and only now realize that what they meant was the return of punk that you can actually listen to. Nobody's saying you have to puss out to make a pop-esque punk album. But at some point in time, I imagine that artists get a bit tired of playing unpleasant music, and decide that more ambitious goals (the long rumored fourth chord!) are worth a shot.
So as an antidote for the shitty punk/emo that the Street Scene is offering up, I present to you San Diego's own Fifty On Their Heels. Listening to these guys the past couple days has really made me aware of the fact that a record does't have to go by at 120 mph and be shoved down your throat to be punk. The singer has a voice that you'll feel like you've heard many times before, sort of snotty, faux British. But where the band really shines is the music, which manages to never sound the same, and even accomplishes the ultimate punk coup of incorporating different musical passages and even different instruments into the same song. You know how on American Idiot, Green Day had a couple nine minute song "suites" that sounded like 6 different songs put together? Well my favorite song on the album, Occupation, pulls off a similar trick in just three and a half minutes. I hear traces of Rancid in the beginning, and Sex Pistols in the vocals, with a Strokes kind of guitar lick for the chorus and a Clash style breakdown all before it builds to an utterly triumphant, cut off too brief finale.
The guys sound like they're having fun. Which is important. But more important, they sound like the kind of band that you could have fun going to see. Fortunately for you, they're playing two shows in San Diego in June, and will be playing lots more all summer long. Check out the myspace page for dates, a few more streaming songs as well as info on where to get their new CD. San Diego has been on a roll with local bands lately. It's too bad that the major summer festival looks headed in the opposite direction.
