Hey!!

check out this interview we did with "Bring Back The Boom Box!"

here: http://bringbacktheboombox.com/main/?p=1266

or, here:

Baby boy here with my second interview, I had the opportunity to interview Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols. A Rock n Roll band out of Toronto making a name for themselves with their blend of past and present. With their big sound and bigger licks, I’m sure this band is going places. I had a chance to talk with Frankie herself and 2 of the Dead Idols, Danny C who plays guitar and Zach O’Rourke the man on the bass.

BBtBB: “So what’s poppin’ in the life of Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols?”

Frankie: “Well we just got off a mini Kiss tour which was great! A few nights ago we opened up for Faster Pussycat, and at the moment we are doing this little mini tour around southern Ontario with our buddies 3 Star Seed.”

BBtBB: “How was that Kiss tour?”

Frankie: “It was fucking awesome. At first it felt a little intimidating playing in front of the Kiss Army but each show they received us very well. We played four shows with Kiss and they were in Sarnia, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax. Just simply amazing.”

BBtBB: “We all know how much of a ladies man Gene is, did he make a pass at you?'

Frankie: “Hahaha no no. Gene and all the guys were total professionals the entire time. They were very supportive each night.”

BBtBB: “Did they give you any helpful hints for down the road?”

Danny C: “Hmm… not really any hints but I remember one night Gene comes up to me right before we go on and his exact words were “Alright, go out and steal the show.” That was pretty amazing coming from him.”

Zach: “They are fucking Kiss! Literally untouchable. Just an honor to play with them.”

BBtBB: “Well Kiss isn’t the only rock n roll sensations you’ve had the chance to play with. What’s it like to play along side some of the L.A. strips finest like Faster Pussycat and L.A. Guns?”

Frankie: “It’s Great. We’ve played with both of those bands twice now and each time there has been a good crowd. Both of those bands are full of talented people and that’s why they are still around today. It’s really an honor to have the chance to be put on the same level as all these bands and rock the fuck out.”

BBtBB: “Now growing up watching these bands and now being able to play along side with them, what do you look for more within them? Are you the type that demands to see perfection or do you wanna see some sloppy balls out rock moves? And does the same go for you guys when you are up on stage?”

Danny C: “Of course you want to go up with the intention of hitting every note but people wanna see a show. Balls out passion is what they are looking for and that’s what we look for when we watch the bands we love. Passion”

Zach: “Once you hit the stage, you can’t control everything that happens. What you can do is control what you give and that’s the intensity that comes out from you. That’s what it’s all about.”

BBtBB: “Tell me what a crowd is like at one of your shows?”

Danny C: “Generally it’s a healthy mix of the younger and the older coming out to enjoy some rock n roll. Playing our own shows we see some of the fans our age bringing out the parents and then it’s vise-versa when we play along sides with the older bands.”

BBtBB: “If for some reason at this very second, Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols was no more, just *BAM* finished. What would you do?”

Frankie: “Well if it wasn’t “this” I wouldn’t stop, keep going with music. I can’t picture myself doing anything else then this. Right here, right now.”

Danny C: “Well, I know if this band ended today, tomorrow I’d be rebuilding it exactly how it is.” (laughs)

BBtBB: “So tell me about your record label “Forty by Sixty” and how they’ve been helping you out.”

Frankie: “These guys are honestly the best. they are there for us 24/7 with anything and everything. Not only coaches but great friends we have acquired.”

BBtBB: “What’s does the future have in store for FW & DI??”

Frankie: “We plan on recording soon, and at the moment just working on our shit and trying to tour. We have our E.P out right now called Hollywood Ending which we are promoting. You can check out the tunes at www.myspace.com/frankiewhyteandthedeadidols

BBtBB: “Any craziness from the road you care to talk about?”

Danny C: “The routine itself is crazy, crazy becomes the routine pretty much.”

What up, rockers!

I did an interview with Spun Music - you guys should check out their space:http://spun-music.blogspot...com/

but also, read the interview:

A couple years back I was looking for some new music to listen to. I was tired of what I was listening to and the radio didn't/doesn't have much to offer. I went to myspace and went linking though band pages until I found one that really caught my eye. Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols was the band. I think it was a cross between the design of their myspace, the look of the band, or the fact that this little Toronto band had tunes that packed a big punch. That day I won a 5 song EP and have been a fan of the band ever since. Frankie Whyte is a female vocalist/guitar player of a 4 piece rock band ripping up the area. It is with my pleasure and without further ado to give to you the first Spun interview.

Spun: For someone who may not know, what genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?

FW: Rock N' Roll. Straight up. What else is there? I'm joking! As for influences, they vary - we listen to a lot of music! To state the obvious though, anything from ... Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith .. to .. Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles. It all rocks.

Spun: When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?

FW: This band formed 2 and a half years ago. and the previously listed influences/bands, are what inspired us to get it together.

Spun: What was the first record you ever bought and do you still own it?

FW: Tragically Hip - Phantom Power. Still own it. Still buy any album the Hip delivers. It's all great.

Spun: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

FW: The biggest challenge would have to be, just simply being heard and getting people to care. Of course, we need to follow that up by giving the people a REASON to care, and I think we do that really well - through our show, we like to entertain. But also, through caring about those who come to see us, in the same way that they care about us.

You play and you play and you play, and you earn your stripes, and no one gives a shit. And then one day, for one reason or another, people slowly start to care, your club gets fuller, your cds sell faster - and that is a really good feeling. So I suppose we've overcome that to an extent or to a level, but each level is followed by the next and the next. I'm sure it's never ending. Even Kiss just broke their attendance record, at 90,000 people in Quebec - and they've been playing for nearly 40 years. See? Never ending!

Spun: If you could share a bill with any artist not having yet played
a bill with who would it be?

FW: I'd love to play with Bruce Springsteen, but I doubt that's even remotely realistic due to our genre vs. his genre alone. Bon Jovi, 100%, as well. And, probably a better fit. If you know me, then you know that Richie Sambora is one of my favorite guitar players - dare I say it - of all time. Truth.

Spun: Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list?

FW: Well, we perform our entire EP! We're still searching for our perfect set, and the set varies depending on the show and the amount of time we have on stage. As for covers, they are always fun once and a while! We used to tear up Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crue and Toys In The Attic by Aerosmith, those were always crowd pleasers, but I don't think we've played them in over a year. Covers are good and all, but you want your own songs to be the crowd pleasers, in the same way that Kickstart My Heart is to Motley. We don't put any major emphasis on playing cover songs.

Spun: The band is starting a tour tomorrow, what cds must come on the van or bus?

FW: Depends on which member you ask.. for Danny, anything by The Beatles. For Zach, anything by Rob Zombie or Alice Cooper. For me, any of those bands, but also - The Police, Def Leppard etc etc.

Spun: If you were not making music, what is it you suspect you'd be occupying your time with?

FW: I can't picture not playing music, so ask me this question again when I'm 90 years old. .. fuck it, I'll probably still answer in the same regard.

Spun: Is there anything that has to be on the band rider at shows? Or is there anything that can't be on it?

FW: Nothing HAS to be on our rider! haaaa! If people want to give us stuff for free, we'll take whatever they want to give us! That being said, I do drink way too much gatorade - to the point where it's probably unheatlhy. When we played the Bell Centre they gave us two coolers full. Like I said, way too much gatorade!

Spun: Do you have any other hobbies besides, obviously, making music?

FW: Making music isn't a hobby, it's what I do with my life. But my hobbies include longboarding, surfing, anything with a board under my feet.

Spun: Do you have a worst show story? Any major train wrecks?

FW: There are always things that happen that are out of control at shows, we've been pretty lucky. The worst show we've ever played was only in front of 5 people at a tiny place in Kensington Market. If I tried to explain to you why it was our worst show, it probably wouldn't seem like that big of a deal, but ask any one of us - worst - and we all knew it. Luckily though, one of the 5 people there dug us enough to give us a spot at a relatively new bar at the time, called Rok Boutique. It became our home - and so goes the telling of the story about going from people not caring... to a club full of people caring. Everyone in Rok, we were all there for the same reasons, it was a real community of like minded people. I'll never forget those experiences.

Spun: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

FW: We'll be opening for Our Lady Peace on August 28th in Sudbury Ont - should be a great show, and you should be there because, well, why would you want to be the ONE person who doesn't come out for one of the last big rock shows of the summer with one of Canada's greatest bands (I mean Our Lady Peace, not FWDI - haaaaa!)? Come out and get rocked!

Spun: What would you consider the highlight of your career so far and
why?

FW: If you asked any one of us, the highlight of our career as of yet, would probably be opening for KISS. That is huge for us. But also, another personal highlight for us would be creating and maintaining our relationship with our producer, Duncan Coutts (OLP) and our label (fortybysixty). They're our team, and they've been with us since day one. Their belief in us, and their guidance is extremely inspiring.

Spun: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?

FW: We have a myspace, we have a website, we have a facebook, we have a twitter... pretty much everything and anything anyone is on! you can find all of those links here: www.myspace.com/frankiewhy..teandthedeadidols

Spun: Lastly just give me two words to end this interview.

FW: I'm goin' with 6 words, sorry Kent! :) "See U @ The Rock Show".

FRANKIE WHYTE AND THE DEAD IDOLS  "HOLLYWOOD ENDING "
Frankie Whyte and The Dead Idols is a young, emerging band tearing it up in the Toronto scene. Just last month they were fortunate enough to open up four shows for legendary rockers, Kiss, and have also graced the stage with Econoline Crush, L.A. Guns and Faster Pussycat, amongst others. They have just re-issued their "Hollywood Ending" EP, dropping one song and adding two new tracks. Duncan Coutts of Our Lady Peace fame has produced this offering.

This 6-Song EP has a very raw live feel to it and stays clear of the typical radio overproduced crap being released nowadays. Frankie, the ringleader who plays guitar, sings and drums on this work and is a force to be reckoned with. Her vocals are often compared to the likes of Joan Jett thrown in with some Motley Crue, and a dash of old school rock.

I couldn't help but to bob my head from the opening track all the way to the final note. The songs feature killer guitar riffs and in the tune "Hollywood Ending" you can hear the 70's Kiss influence in the guitar playing. "Casualty" is my favorite song on the disc and features some great talk box effects throughout. "The Fall" is her most diverse song yet and features some highly vulnerable moments and the piano fittingly compliments Frankie's vocals.

This is the group's best collection of songs to date. It's straight up, good old fashion rock and roll. It's meant to be cranked! Go check out the band live, throw them some horns and support one of the hardest working bands on the scene right now.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

It's a funny thing, validation. We receive it in different ways, and work/strive for it in different ways. I've been lucky enough to have sat with some of my musical heroes on a personal level. This to me, WAS validation. You know what, I can't lie. It still IS validation: when one of your heroes gives you the "yeah, you're alright kid" nod, it feels pretty fucking great inside. However that's not to say that all validation NEEDS to or DOES come from that "higher" musical place, because it's doesn't. Let me explain...

Frankie Whyte & The Dead Idols have been awarded with some amazing opportunities over the span of our, so far, short career. We have also hit some of the biggest bumps in the road that you probably couldn't even imagine. And while these bumps take us down a peg each time, we've always had faith in our abilities as musicians and as people, to enable us to power through and get our shit done, but also in the RIGHT way. We pride ourselves on being on of the hardest working bands in Toronto, and while I thoroughly believe in the "only YOU can make things happen for YOURSELF" work ethic, we do realize what a huge part all of YOU play in the making of our path, and we want YOU to realize this of yourselves.

This is for anyone who's ever booked us a show in ANY city.
This is for anyone who's ever worn our shirt.
This is for anyone who's ever spun our cd.
This is for anyone who's ever stood at the back of the bar for our set.
This is for anyone who's ever stood in front of us and thrown horns.
This is for anyone who's ever passed on the word about us to someone else.
This is for anyone who brings an extra friend down to the venue.
This is for anyone who's ever had the balls to come up and say hi
This is for anyone who's ever sent us a message (we read them all and will reply)
This is for anyone who's ever left a comment on our myspace or facebook pages
This is for anyone who's ever returned a phone call or taken a meeting with us.
This is for Gaz in England for giving us our first International review.
This is for Jason Baker for holding down our hometown with our Toronto reviews.
This is for Frankie PDK, Dawn Simmons and Tracy for giving us a home at Rok B.
This is for Kelv Hellrazer.
This is for Kill The 8, Tony Holiday, Vicky and their team for their friendship and support!
This is for Rich, Stirling and Bobby for their help online, no questions asked.
This is for Terry Sawchuk.
This is for fortybysixty
This is for DJ and Natalie Williams
This is for DUNCAN FUCKING COUTTS.
This is for the Cavalcante family.
This is for Cindy at The Big Bop for cutting us in on LA Guns.
This is for Brad, Ken, Kenny and Vince at the Red Rooster for being our home away from home.
This is for Kent in Regina - WE WILL MAKE IT TO YOU, I PROMISE!
This is for the guys in Alice Cooper for making us feel like we're apart of something bigger
This is for Corktown, The Meloche Family and all of our HAMMERTOWN FRIENDS!
This is for Donna in Vancouver for including us in her projects
This is for Sheena and TJ at TMS
This is for Gail in NYC and Christine in Kingston for keeping in touch!
This is for Monday Rose, Buff Justice and Basia Lyjak, Emy Stancheva and Ron Bechard, Steven Rose and Colin Williams and Kevxn Dietz

Hey Everyone!!

Our friend Devon and Decon at Bandwagon.com have posted a review from a show that we did a while back! Be sure to check it and the website out, here:

http://www.bandwagonmagazine.com/Frankie%20Whyte.html

OR, read it here

Old school 1980s metal in the vein of Motley Crue and Def Leppard rang out of the Rok Boutique on December 13th as Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols gave a free show. If hair bands went out with the 1980s no one told this quartet, but my sense is that they wouldn't care.

Lead singer/lead guitarist Frankie, rhythm guitarist Danny C (You wanna talk hair check out the jet black tendrils on this dude), bass player Gianmike and drummer Andy live the dream every night they play in paying tribute to Crue, Kiss and other acts whom they idolize. That which is celebrated by FWDI is not universally loved. But their own take upon the genre manifested within Frankie's original compositions are winning concertgoers to their fanbase of which I have now joined.

Frankie sums that up this way "we play the music we love. We can't help but play it loud and aggressive and in your face, it's our energy. At the end of the day, all you can hope for is that your enthusiasm and sweat for songs infects and inspires an audience to want to be as in your face as much as you do theirs".

I am but a late convert in discovering the wonders of this energetic and inventive act. FWDI are actually particularly popular with other local musicians. Hard rock singer/songstess Basia Lyjak, and Sin Dealer guitarist Ron Bechard were seen in attendance at the show as were members of the band Monday Rose. Their musical peers can view FWDI and hear them more critically yet they come out fully as enthused as the rest of us do if not more so. I think that speaks quite highly of the musicianship of FWDI but also of their flair in performing live. That is why I say if you have a chance to see them live don't miss it.

FWDI were shooting footage for their video of their hot new track "Blackout" from their recent EP "Hollywood Ending". But they played the rest of their repertoire too and that included tracks from their first EP like Home, Rise and Fall and Wake Up #37 as well as other Hollywood Ending tunes like the title track and Who Your Friends Are. Added to that was a cover of "Kickstart My Heart" by Crue, one of their biggest influences. They also granted the audience demand for an encore with Grafitti Testament, another track from their debut EP.

Bassist GM reflects on what it is like to perform at shows like this "All I can say is that the only time I feel alive is when I'm on stage. It's the only time all the bullshit around me seizes to exist. Even though there is the world's loudest roar and a connection between us and the audience - there is still a moment that's silent and beautiful and honest where the weight of the world just seems to fall at your feet".

Danny C on Rhythm guitar sort of agrees "Nothing else matters for those 30 minutes or for that hour, when you're on stage".

I said that FWDI have an eighties quality to them but their sound is a blending so fundamentally evocative of the traditions of classic rock it is of a timeless quality. It rests comfortably amidst the respective sounds of late 1960s bands like Cream, 1970s acts like Alice Copper and the aforementioned Kiss and Motley Crue.

Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols Hollywood Ending EP can be purchased at CD Baby and on iTunes.
