Last night I helped out at a Singles Event put on by SweetOnGeeks.com. Where was this website 5 years ago? The event was held at a local comic shop ( Heroes Aren't Hard To Find)and despite the worries that it would be all males there were an equal number of females there. Yes! Girls can be geeks. Thankfully the stigma of geek is falling away as geeks become a bit more mainstream. Geeks are banding together thanks to the internet. Sites like theforce.net, theonering.com and mugglenet.com (to mention a few) have gained popularity through their fandoms. Comic books are no longer seen as silly but are now becoming more and more popular as the movie industry turns what people have been reading into larger than life images. People are finding out that those D&D players aren't just sitting in their mother's basement munching on cheetos, drinking Mt. Dew and casting Magic Missile. These are incredibly smart folks who make a good living and have a rich imagination that often lets them become published authors. As a person who is a product of geek love found on the internet I highly recommend to singles that you get out there and take some chances. Sign up at sweetongeeks.com and see who might match up with you. If you make a connection online find a safe place to meet up like at a Singles Night at a comic shop or a convention. Just be sure to wash the cheetos stains of your hands before you go out.

Many thanks to theforce.net for posting this! Recently we had this discussion about what would happen if Superman faced a Jedi. Apparently gizmodo.com overheard us and came up with this: Gadgets Can a Lightsaber Cut Through Superman? Can a gadget defeat a superhero? Here's a question our sister site io9 posed: can a lightsaber cut through Superman? We put both our nerdy gadget knowledge and our nerdy superhero knowledge to the test and came up with reasons why it could and reasons why it couldn't. Yes • If the lightsaber crystal was green, like green kryptonite, or if they actually used kryptonite as the crystal, then Superman would melt like a hot knife through even hotter dog droppings. • Superman's been injured by lasers before (see most aliens he's fought), so an extremely focused laser like a lightsaber could possibly hurt him if applied directly to the skin for a long enough time. • If he were under the effects of kryptonite, when even bullets can hurt him, then a lightsaber could definitely chop off parts of his body. No • What type of radiation does the lightsaber emit? It's light, and Superman gets power from the sun, so the lightsaber could be a refreshing lamp. • It would just burn off his clothes, like in Superman 2, but it wouldn't hurt him. • He uses lasers (his own heat vision) to shave himself, so the best the lightsaber could do would to singe his chest hair, or give him a nice shave down there. • Jedis can't actually cut through "everything" with the sword. Example: the big huge door in Episode I. They had to jam in their lightsabers and "melt" a doorway inside the door. The sword was fast to go into the door because they applied all the force to the tip, but was slow cutting because the Jedis are only so strong. Picture you cutting through a watermelon. In the same principle, a lightsaber technically might be able to cut through Superman, but there's nobody strong enough to force it through. Unless you somehow get the Hulk to use a lightsaber. But the Hulk doesn't exist. Verdict: Superman wins! [Thanks to Achal for his Superman knowledge.] article Superman vs. a Jedi By the Power of Sol, I Have the Power Superman's powers come largely from his exposure to Earth's yellow sun, and the sun has been charging his solar batteries for nearly all of his life. While it's unlikely at this point that Superman's batteries could run down, we'll assume that all of these battles mentioned in this article take place on Earth or in the presence of a similar star. We'll begin with the question that started it all -- would Superman win in a fight against a Jedi Knight? Booth's e-mail raised several specific questions. Would a Jedi be fast enough to sense Superman's approach? Could the Jedi manipulate Superman in mid-air? Could a lightsaber be made from kryptonite? Jedi are fast, and part of their training involves fighting without using their sight or other senses. But they don't quite reach Superman's speeding-bullet status. Physically, Superman has the upper hand. Because of Superman's strength and speed, using the Force to manipulate him mid-flight would be a lot like manipulating a starship. If the Force could manipulate starships in flight, Darth Vader could have crashed all the X-wings during the Battle of Yavin. Or, Luke Skywalker could have destroyed all of the Star Destroyers during the Battle of Hoth. The logical conclusion is that Jedi are not capable of stopping something as strong and fast as a speeding starship. Some portrayals, like the "Clone Wars" series, do show Jedi performing extreme feats with the Force, but those feats come with a price. To even attempt to stop Superman in mid-flight could seriously injure or kill a Jedi. Finally, there are two reasons why a Jedi wouldn't have a lightsaber made from kryptonite: * A lightsaber uses crystals to focus the blade, and gathering these crystals from the planet Ilum is a rite of passage for a Jedi. Under certain conditions, the crystals emit light and energy. Kryptonite is not typically crystalline; it's usually a metal or a rock. The crystalline versions of Kryptonite that have existed have emitted radiation, just like Green Kryptonite, rather than light or energy. * Kryptonite affects Superman because of its radioactive properties. Adding kryptonite would only make a lightsaber more deadly to him if the resulting weapon emitted the same radiation. However, a lightsaber may be useful against Superman even without the presence of kryptonite, since magical weapons can harm him. If the Ilum crystals are by nature magical, then the blade might slice through Superman just like it can slice through Vader's arm. You can read more about lightsabers in How Lightsabers Work. With these points in mind, it seems unlikely that a Jedi could defeat Superman, regardless of who has the high ground unless lightsabers are magical. A Sith Lord, on the other hand, could be a formidable opponent for Superman. Unlike Jedi, Sith Lords don't hold themselves to a code of balance or fair play. They give in to powerful emotions like passion and rage, and they use the Force with a vengeance. Sith Lords also use synthetic crystals and make other adjustments to their lightsabers. They may be more likely to entertain the idea of making a kryptonite or magical lightsaber. Failing that, a Sith Lord may tune his lightsaber in such a way that it bypasses Superman's protective field. A Sith Lord's no-holds-barred approach to wielding the Force also provides a potential advantage. So while he might not be able to stop Superman in midair, a Sith Lord could act first, unleashing the Force while Superman was on the ground. The ensuing fight between a Sith Lord and Superman has the potential to be long and brutal, especially as the Force weakens Superman. A Sith Lord could win, depending on: * How effectively and repeatedly he can strike Superman with a lightsaber or Force lightning * Whether these weapons have an effect on Superman If the Force and lightsabers can affect Superman, they could allow a Sith Lord to overcome the natural advantage Superman seems to gain when fighting evil. article And finally: Superman vs. the Death Star Superman has x-ray and heat vision, freezing breath and an impenetrable field that surrounds his body and his clothing. He can move at tremendous speeds, and he can fly. The Death Star has 10,000 turbolaser batteries, 2,500 laser cannons, 2,500 ion cannons and 768 tractor beam projectors. It also has a Superlaser, which focuses the energy from the station's hypermatter reactor into a beam capable of destroying planets. When fighting Superman, the Death Star's Superlaser might be a liability instead of an asset. The reactor's power output is comparable to that of a small star. Depending on how similar this energy is to that of a yellow sun, the laser might actually make Superman stronger. But even without a power boost from the Superlaser, Superman would still be invulnerable to the Death Star's other weaponry. Even if the Death Star managed to trap Superman in its tractor beams, it might not be able to penetrate his skin with its weapons. In addition, Superman wouldn't need to find a two-meter-wide thermal exhaust port in order to destroy the Death Star. His strength and dexterity would allow him to punch his way through the hull to access to the space station's reactor. He could then use his heat vision to start a chain-reaction and fly out again to escape from the resulting explosion. To defend itself against Superman, the Death Star could leave the vicinity of any yellow sun and stay so far away that Superman couldn't reach it before losing his powers. But this might only delay the inevitable -- Superman's body has stored so much energy from the Earth's sun that his batteries may never run out. Then, the Empire could retrofit its weaponry to use kryptonite ordnance. Otherwise, the Death Star would fall quickly. article

Hopefully this will help everyone know what books to acquire for the 2008 reading schedule. If you have any questions please ask. All meetings are on Saturday (unless we run into a conflict).
2008 Books/Dates/Special Notes
January 19th - Darth Bane: Rule of Two by Drew Karpyshyn
February 16th - Star Wars: Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn
March 15th - Allegiance by Timothy Zahn - to be held at StellarCon featuring Timothy Zahn
April 19th - Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn
May 17th - Dark Force Rising by Timothy Zahn
June 21st - The Last Command by Timothy Zahn
July 19th - Specter of the Past by Timothy Zahn
August 16th - Vision of the Future by Timothy Zahn
September 20th - Survivor's Quest
October 18th - TBA*
November 15th - TBA*
December 13th - Annual Holiday Party
For our *TBAs here are my suggestions:
Tales from the Empire - despite the customer reviews I read several of the stories in here. There is a Boba Fett one that rocks and a really good "bridge" story about Mara Jade.
Death Star - A book about the badest weapon (outside of the Sun Crusher ) . . . what's not to love?
Mara Jade: By the Emperor's Hand - this would be something that everyone would have to buy and it is a graphic novel/comic. I've heard good things about it.
We could start the Legacy of the Force series which was our alternative to this year's series.
Or we could start a 2 year adventure with The New Jedi Order series.
OK, sound off.

We had a great time today (sorry no pictures as we all forgot cameras). We've decided Xizor is full of himself and annoying (Thrawn is at least a worthy adversary) and that the book was pivotal to Luke's development.
I read a passage from RotJ outloud (when Luke removes Vader's mask). It is one of my favorite passages from SW literature.
We discussed what we are going to read next year and everyone has agreed on . . .
Thrawn! . . . with a side of Darth Bane
So, this will be our schedule:
Jan-Darth Bane v2.0 Feb-Outbound Flight Mar-Allegiance (meet Zahn at StellarCon!) Apr-Heir to the Empire May-Dark Force Rising Jun-The Last Command Jul-Specter of the Past Aug-Vision of the Future Sep-Survivor's Quest Oct-Off for Hickory Con (tentative) Nov-TBD
We also discussed whether or not to keep the meetings at Beatties Ford Road Library. We feel that this is a central location easily accessible to anyone coming from Concord, Mint Hill, Rock Hill, Gastonia, Hickory , etc. Yes, the neighborhood is a little dicey but we've never had a problem (except for the boy who attempted . . . and failed to walk off with my Death Star! ).
We are going to stay with this location and we strongly encourage (cough*purplepenguin*cough) those who live on the other side of the county to join us.
We also discussed the new mailing list and how that is keeping us in touch with each other better than the forums at theforce.net. We will continue to make announcements on the forums and keep our presence but our main communication will be through our mailing list. We will also be requiring people to attend a meeting or an event to meet them in person before we give them access to the mailing list.
After that we played minis! I got punked by my kid She and FettAspirant soundly trounced me. It was great to have FettAspirant there because he really challenged my knowledge (lack of . . . ) minis.
andyf played TK-2970 and beat him. I think that was a retaliation for TK-2970 handing Andy one of the custom modules and then calling out "Look! I gave Andy the shaft!" harharhar
It was great to see roydh there. Wish you could have stayed to play minis!
So, this is the final book club thread for 2007! It's been a great year! Thanks to everyone who has made it to our meetings.

The Charlotte Fan Force is going to start play Minis! What is that you ask? It's kind of like Risk meets Chess meets RPG with a big attitude!
The game is made by Wizards of the Coast. Here is a handy dandy demo.
We are going to run our first game on Saturday, September 15th at 12:30pm at the Beatties Ford Road Library. You can come early for our book club. We are reading The Empire Strikes Back.
Questions? Ask here, on the boards or email us at charlottefanforce at yahoo dot com.

Saturday, December 9th was the 1st annual Charlotte Fan Force Christmas Party. We had a great time.
We started out at TK-2970 and Jada's house and then went to McAdenville to see the lights.
We had a great time seeing the lights and then stopping in at McAdenville Baptist Church's Free Coffee House for Hot Chocolate.
Then we went back to TK-2970 and Jada's place for a potluck dinner. Jada served the adults "Pointsettas" [Champagne and Cranberry Juice]. It was a hit!
After dinner we had the White Elephant Exchange. A copy of Timothy Zahn's Outbound Flight was the big hit and was traded the most. Then Jada had everyone played the "salad bowl" game. You have to be there to understand.
We had folks from the CFF, 501st and TK-2970 and Jada's bible study group attend.
Here are pictures from the party.
So here is hoping everyone has a safe and happy Christmas and can join us next year!

On Saturday, October 28th the few, the proud, the CFF headed out to do an event with the Carolina 501st at Discovery Place.
We helped out at the display table and got to meet the fine folks of the 501st. It was a great time for Jada, TK-2970 and darkladypurplepencil.
Here are some pics:

We look forward to doing another event with the 501st soon!
